feat(rules): arm a ticking status watcher at launch and wait through it - #349
Conversation
The periodic-updates modifier now says the watcher posts a line every interval even when nothing changed, that it is armed in the launch step, that waits go through it and not one long blocking call, and that the launch reply gives the total ETA. Adds the periodic-launch screening scenario.

unmeasured ETA status, while preserving the five-minute update requirement.

…based long waits in periodic-launch A bare ETA token no longer satisfies the ETA check: the reply needs a duration of 60 minutes or more or an hour figure, with a basis word, or the word unmeasured. The wait check now also rejects waits and timeouts of 600 seconds or more written in seconds, and a GNU timeout of that size. A watcher's own timeout_ms is not a blocking wait and still passes.

- Line 5: Update requiredPattern so the five-minute update requirement is paired
with either an explicit unmeasured status or a total ETA and its basis for the
current run; ensure historical durations alone cannot satisfy the ETA branch.
- Line 5: Update requiredPattern so each existing five-minute cadence form is
accepted only when it appears within 40 characters on the same line and sentence
as “interval,” “cadence,” “updates,” or “status,” in either order. Preserve the
separate lookahead that checks for an unmeasured estimate or a qualifying prior
runtime.
- Line 6: Update the `forbiddenPattern` to reject waits of 10 minutes or more in
minute-based forms for both `sleep`/`timeout` and `wait`/`block`, including
GNU-style `timeout 10m`. Preserve the required whitespace after `timeout` so
`timeout_ms` remains excluded.

…or timeout of 10 minutes or more The ETA duration must follow an estimate word (ETA, expect, about, takes and similar) within 40 characters, so a historical runtime alone no longer passes. The wait check also rejects sleep or timeout with a minutes or m suffix of 10 or more. Waits phrased in minutes in prose stay allowed, since a good reply may say it expects the run to take about 75 minutes while it waits through the watcher.

…nch scenario The required-pattern ETA clause stopped at 199 minutes or 2 hours, so a correct reply to a longer run failed. It now takes 60 to 99 minutes, 100 or more minutes, and any number of hours.

…periodic-launch scenario The wait and block clause applied the 600 cutoff to milliseconds, so a reply that polls with a 600 ms wait failed the scenario. Seconds keep the 600 cutoff; milliseconds now need 600000 or more.

… periodic-launch scenario An ETA of 0.5 hours no longer counts as 60 minutes or more, and sleep or timeout in hour units (sleep 1h, timeout 1 hour) now fails like the minute and second forms. The watcher's timeout_ms is unchanged.

…eep or timeout The periodic-launch forbidden pattern required the duration to follow sleep or timeout directly, so "sleep for 10 minutes" and "timeout for 2 hours" passed. Up to four filler words (letters only) may now sit between the command and the duration, in seconds, minutes and hours. The watcher's timeout_ms is still not matched.

The
periodic-updatesmodifier already tells an agent to post a status line every 5 minutes during a job over about 10 minutes. In one long timed run the agent armed a watcher that reported milestones only and waited on the job in a long blocking call. The user had to ask why it was taking so long. This closes the three places where the text allowed that. What changes in
rules/modifiers/periodic-updates.md(1473 to 1961 bytes; the modifier is opt-in, so the 30,200-byte fresh-install ceiling is unaffected):I did not add a second threshold such as 30 minutes beside the existing 10, and I did not add a launch helper. Hosts differ in how they run a watcher, and the rule already covers arming one, so a helper would reuse nothing. The two sentences that
without:patterns in the existing screening scenarios match are unchanged.New scenario.
evals/end-of-reply/screen/modifiers/periodic-launch.mdgives a reply after a background launch of a 60 to 90 minute run whose runner prints a line only every 20 minutes. It passes when the reply names the 5-minute interval and either "unmeasured" or an estimate for this run (an estimate word such as ETA, expect or about, then 60 minutes or more or an hour figure) with a basis such as the last runs. It fails on a blocking wait of 10 minutes or more written as asleep, atimeout, or a wait in seconds. A watcher's owntimeout_msis allowed.Checks.

Canned replies grade as intended: a reply that arms a 5-minute watcher and gives an ETA passes, and a milestone-only watcher and a 900-seconduntilloop each fail. Not run: the before and after model eval. The Claude Code command line that the eval wrapper uses returned "weekly limit" (resets 2026-10-18 12:00 MDT) for both Opus and Sonnet. No model has replied to the new scenario under the old or new text. The scenario is therefore checked for structure and grading only, not for whether a model follows the new wording. Run

Nothing is versioned, tagged or released.
Summary by cubic
The
periodic-updatesmodifier now has the agent arm a ticking status watcher at launch, post a status line every interval (not only on milestones), and wait on the job through the watcher instead of one long blocking call. The launch reply states the total ETA with its basis (or "unmeasured") and the interval, and repeats it whenever the ETA changes.Adds a
periodic-launchscreening scenario that grades the reply: the ETA must follow an estimate word within 40 characters and be a duration of 60 minutes or more with a basis, or "unmeasured"; waits or timeouts of 10 minutes or more fail when phrased in minutes, seconds, or hours—including with up to four filler words between the command and the duration—except a watcher's owntimeout_ms. Sub-hour figures like "0.5 hours" do not count as 60 minutes or more.Written for commit b08a8c2. Summary will update on new commits.
