Summary

  • Feed-episode matching (subscription sync, library restore, Info, push hydration) now reads up to 1,000 of a show's newest episodes from a lean endpoint, GET episodes/match, instead of the oldest 100 from the paged episode list.
  • Local catalog writes never replace another show's episode: a row whose ID another (show, catalog key) already holds gets a reserved local ID.
  • A feed address corrected on the device is marked for the next sync push.

Motivation

  • The paged list is capped at 100 items for memory, and the baseline asked for the oldest 100. On a show with more than 100 episodes, newer feed episodes found no match: they got local negative IDs, so progress, history and downloads kept under the Podcast Index IDs no longer attached, and Info could list an episode twice.
  • upsertEpisodes replaces by episode ID, but an incoming row was only checked against its own show. Two shows that read the same feed (a feed listed twice in Podcast Index) mint the same IDs from the same feed namespace, so refreshing one show took the other's rows: wrong show, title and audio, and a cached download playing the other episode. This breaks the ID contract in docs/EPISODE_IDS.md §4.
  • PodcastDao.setFeedUrl never set isDirty, so an address found by recovery, auto-download or library restore stayed on one device.

What changed

  • :core:network: BoxLoreApi.getEpisodeMatchList and EpisodeMatchResponse (id, guid, title, enclosureUrl, datePublished only).
  • :core:catalog: PodcastRepository.loadPiEpisodesForBaseline reads the match list (up to MAX_MATCH_BASELINE = 1,000) and falls back to the old page when the route fails or useEpisodeMatchBaseline is off. It stays strict: when both fail it throws, so nothing is matched against an empty list. Full pages keep the 100 cap.
  • :core:rss: a matched newest tip keeps its ID and takes empty fields (description, artwork, length, Podcast 2.0 links) from the feed episode (Episode.withBlanksFrom); a full baseline row is unchanged.
  • :core:rss: LocalEpisodeCollisionGuard runs inside the refresh transaction. It looks up owners across all shows (LocalEpisodeCatalogDao.findOwners) and gives a clashing row a reserved negative ID (StickyEpisodeIdentity.reservedEpisodeId), stable across refreshes. The same (show, key) keeps updating its row. The legacy RSS upgrade keeps its IDs for listener state, so it stays on RSS instead when another show holds one.
  • :core:database: setFeedUrl sets isDirty = 1 and writes nothing when the address is unchanged.
  • :feature:info: the repository-backed supplement support uses the strict baseline.
  • :app: FeedFixSwitches, PostHog kill switches passed into core modules as lambdas. feed-fix-match-baseline-off sends baselines back to the page; with no answer from PostHog the fix stays on.
  • Module READMEs updated.

Behavior & compatibility

  • No screens change, so phone, tablet, foldable and resizable-window states are unaffected; nothing in adaptive layout or state retention is touched.
  • If episodes/match is missing or failing (an older API deployment, an error), baselines use the same page as before.
  • The match list is about 200 KB for 1,000 items, far below the full-text page that motivated the 100 cap.
  • Existing rows keep their IDs. Only a new clash gets a reserved ID; rows replaced by a past clash are not repaired here.
  • No Room schema change.

What changes in the user’s life:

  • On shows with more than 100 episodes, newer episodes keep their progress, history and downloads, and stop showing twice.
  • An episode of one show no longer replaces an episode of another show that shares its feed.
  • A feed address boxlore corrects on one device reaches your other devices through sync.

Backend — optional, pairable with any user-impact level

CHANGELOG.md (required developer copy)

Fixed

  • Feed-episode baselines read up to 1,000 newest episodes from GET episodes/match (match fields only) instead of the oldest 100, with the old page as fallback and a PostHog kill switch (feed-fix-match-baseline-off); a matched newest tip fills empty fields from the feed.
  • LocalEpisodeCollisionGuard keeps a local catalog row from replacing another show's episode: a clashing row gets a reserved negative ID, and the legacy RSS upgrade stays on RSS instead.
  • PodcastDao.setFeedUrl marks the row dirty, so a corrected feed address syncs.

README What's New / Upcoming (required for user-impact changes)

Fixes

  • Shows with more than 100 episodes keep progress, history and downloads on their newer episodes, and stop listing some twice.
  • An episode of one show no longer replaces an episode of another show that uses the same feed.
  • A feed address boxlore fixes on one device now reaches your other devices through sync.

Test plan

  • :core:network, :core:database, :core:rss, :core:catalog, :core:downloads, :feature:info and :app unit tests pass locally; detekt clean; :app:lintDebug with no findings in changed files
  • Regression tests fail on the old code: PodcastDaoExtendedTest.setFeedUrlMarksACorrectedAddressForTheNextPush (no dirty row) and LocalEpisodeCatalogRepositoryTest.twoShowsReadingTheSameFeedKeepTheirOwnEpisodes (one row left)
  • New coverage: LocalEpisodeCollisionGuardTest (cross-show, same show with another key, within one batch, stable reserved IDs, exhaustion, legacy upgrade check), PodcastRepositoryCatalogTest (1,000-item request, skipped rows, fallback, off switch), EpisodeSupplementTipLogicTest (match-only and full rows), FeedFixSwitchesTest
  • Built and installed on a phone (./gradlew installDebug)
  • Required checks are green before merge

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Episode matching can use a baseline of up to 1,000 recent episodes, falling back to the existing 100-episode page when needed or when the feature is switched off.
    • Matching episodes retain baseline identifiers and fill missing details from feed data.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Episode ID conflicts between shows no longer overwrite another show’s catalog entries; unresolved conflicts are skipped, and affected legacy RSS upgrades remain on RSS.
    • Corrected feed addresses are marked for synchronization, while unchanged addresses leave sync status untouched.

The changes add a match-endpoint episode baseline with a paginated fallback, fill empty baseline fields from feed episodes, prevent local episode ID collisions, and mark changed feed URLs dirty for sync.

Changes: Episode Baseline Matching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Match endpoint baseline and fallback
core/network/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/network/BoxLoreApi.kt, core/network/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/network/model/PodcastIndexModels.kt, core/catalog/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/catalog/*, core/catalog/src/test/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/catalog/*, app/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/*, app/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/sync/*, app/src/test/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/sync/*, feature/info/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/feature/info/PodcastInfoSupplementSupport.kt, core/network/README.md, core/catalog/README.md, app/README.md, feature/info/README.md
The API adds GET episodes/match. PodcastRepository maps valid match items and falls back to the oldest-sorted page when the switch is off or the match request cannot provide a response. App wiring supplies the PostHog switch, and Info uses the baseline loader.
Fill empty fields from feed episodes
core/rss/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/rss/EpisodeSupplementTipLogic.kt, core/rss/src/test/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/rss/EpisodeSupplementTipLogicTest.kt, core/rss/README.md
Matched baselines retain populated values and receive empty fields from feed episodes. Tests cover match-only and full baseline rows.

Local Episode ID Collision Protection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve episode ID ownership before writes
core/database/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/database/LocalEpisodeCatalogDao.kt, core/database/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/database/LocalEpisodeEntity.kt, core/rss/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/rss/*, core/rss/src/test/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/rss/*, core/rss/README.md
The DAO exposes episode owners. The collision guard assigns reserved IDs to conflicting rows when available and omits rows after eight unsuccessful attempts. Catalog refreshes write resolved rows, and legacy upgrades reject IDs owned by another show.

Feed URL Sync State

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mark changed feed URLs dirty
core/database/src/main/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/database/PodcastDao.kt, core/database/src/test/java/cx/aswin/boxlore/core/database/PodcastDaoExtendedTest.kt, core/database/README.md
setFeedUrl marks changed URLs dirty and does not update rows when the URL is unchanged. Tests verify dirty-query results and unchanged sync state.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

No unresolved review threads remain. The current review reports zero actionable findings, and all three returned CodeRabbit threads have discussion state resolved. Prior failure addressed: The current review now reports zero actionable findings, and each of the three previously returned CodeRabbit threads is marked discussion=resolved.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes production Kotlin in six modules: app, core/catalog, core/database, core/network, core/rss, and feature/info. The same PR modifies each matching module README.md: app/README.md, core/catalog/README.md, core/database/README.md, core/network/README.md, core/rss/README.md, and feature/info/README.md. No test-only exception is needed.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The PR adds JVM tests under src/test for the changed production logic. Coverage includes match-baseline success, invalid-row skipping, fallback, off-switch, and dual-failure behavior; feed-field supplementation; collision reservation, stability, batch clashes, and refresh failure; owner lookup; corrected feed URL dirty-state behavior; Info baseline success/failure; and PostHog switch behavior. Tests are present in the catalog, database, RSS, Info, and app modules.

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

The PR introduces an episode identity/storage contract violation. docs/EPISODE_IDS.md §4 requires a reserved local ID to be recorded as an alias, and §5 requires episode_aliases storage. The changed LocalEpisodeCollisionGuard.resolve assigns reserved IDs, while LocalEpisodeCatalogRefresh writes those rows with upsertEpisodes and records no alias. BoxLoreDatabase still has only the existing entities at version 38, and the PR adds no alias table, DAO, migration, or alias resolution. The new source comment explicitly defers alias tables to a later build.

Resolution

Implement the §4–5 alias contract before using reserved IDs. Add episode_aliases Room storage, DAO operations, and the required schema migration. Record the (podcastId, catalogKey) to reserved-ID mapping in the same transaction as the catalog write. Resolve episode references, listener state, queue, history, and downloads through the alias mapping. Add migration and persistence tests that verify aliases survive refreshes and preserve identity across collisions.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 20.83% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 72 functions across 25 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
