Summary

  • Stage 3 now works out a per-show check schedule beside today's news/core/relaxed tiers and reports what it would have checked. Checks still follow the tiers; nothing is skipped or added.
  • CADENCE_MODE (shadow by default, off) and APPLE_LATEST_DB control it.

Motivation

  • Every chart show is checked on one of three fixed tiers (8, 24 or 48 hours), whatever it publishes. A daily show waits up to a day; a show that stopped years ago is still checked every day or two.
  • A schedule that follows each show's pace has to be measured before it replaces the tiers: how many checks a day, which new episodes it would have found later, and by how much.

What changed

  • lib/cadence.js:
    • Pace: the average gap between a show's newest 11 dated episodes.
    • Interval: news shows hourly; otherwise a quarter of the gap, within 3 to 48 hours. Dormant shows (newest episode and a fresh Apple answer both over 180 days old) weekly. A show with no known pace keeps its tier. The tiers' per-show jitter applies.
    • Apple's latest-episode date (the applefeeds snapshot, read-only) makes a show due when Apple lists a newer episode than the newest we know, until it has been checked 6 hours past that date.
    • The shadow plan covers every candidate before the per-run cap; the comparison counts shows the schedule would skip or check earlier and the new tips it would have found later, and estimates checks a day against the tiers.
  • 03-sync-episodes.js: about daily, pace and newest dates are seeded from the episode book (one aggregate read). Each check records the tip's date; a changed tip records the list's pace. R5's feed tips record their date too (tipDates in lib/stale-tips.js). The plan is computed from the state as it was before the run's checks; one line goes into the run report.
  • Show records gain g (pace in hours), p (newest date, seconds) and i (iTunes ID, recorded at the candidate refresh). A one-time refresh records iTunes IDs when most candidates lack one.
  • Tests: lib/cadence.test.js (pace, intervals, dormancy, the Apple rule, the plan, the comparison, the book seed, the snapshot reader, the report line), R5's tip dates and the chart merge's iTunes ID. scripts/README.md describes the module.

Behavior & compatibility

  • No check is added or skipped; the only new reads are one aggregate over the episode book about daily and point lookups in Apple's local snapshot. Neither can fail the stage: a failure drops that part of the report.
  • Rehearsed read-only on the runner's live state: book seed 1.3 s for 25,626 shows, plan 0.4 s; pace known for 96% of the 26,008 candidates.

Added

  • Catalog sync: stage 3 reports what a per-show check schedule (by each show's pace, with Apple's latest-episode date as a safety net) would have checked, beside the current tiers (CADENCE_MODE=shadow).

Test plan

  • npm run test:sync --prefix scripts: 190 tests pass
  • Read-only rehearsal against the runner's state, episode book and Apple snapshot
  • Required checks are green before merge

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added shadow-mode reporting that compares cadence-based show checks with the existing schedule. Checks continue to follow the existing schedule.
    • Cadence reporting accounts for show activity, episode release patterns, and Apple’s latest-episode data when available.
    • Sync results now include iTunes IDs and dates for successfully updated episodes.
  • Documentation

    • Documented cadence modes, scheduling rules, report details, and behavior when episode or Apple data is unavailable.

The change adds shadow cadence planning and connects it to the episode sync stage. Checks continue to use existing tiers. The stage records show metadata and tip dates, then logs cadence comparisons.

Changes: Episode Sync Cadence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cadence planning and reporting
scripts/sync/lib/cadence.js, scripts/sync/lib/cadence.test.js, scripts/sync/lib/config.js, scripts/sync/lib/state.js, scripts/README.md, scripts/package.json
Adds per-show interval planning, pace seeding, Apple snapshot lookups, comparisons with tier checks, and cadence reports. Adds configuration and show-record documentation, and includes cadence tests in the sync test script.
Episode sync integration
scripts/sync/03-sync-episodes.js, scripts/sync/lib/chart-countries.js, scripts/sync/lib/chart-countries.test.js, scripts/sync/lib/stale-tips.js, scripts/sync/lib/stale-tips.test.js
Passes iTunes IDs and tip dates into cadence tracking. The stage seeds pace, builds a shadow plan, records updated dates, and logs the comparison while retaining existing tier checks.

Cadence runs in shadow mode only and does not change which shows are checked. A very large episode book could cause the pace seed to be skipped, which affects reporting only. The test and documentation runtime guidance should be aligned with the SQLite requirement, but this is bounded and can be handled as a follow-up.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title follows the Conventional Commits format, uses an allowed type and scope, stays under 72 characters, and accurately describes the per-show cadence change. The description is concise but not strictly imperative.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 86.67% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 15 functions across 9 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

PASS. ARCHITECTURE.md governs the Android Gradle graph and lists the checked constraints at lines 7–9 and 164–182. The PR changes only scripts/**; it changes no app, core, feature, or Gradle module files. The added script imports are limited to existing sync modules (config, staleness, and sync helpers), with no feature-module, PostHog, Hilt/Koin/Dagger/MockK, playback, designsystem, or AppContainer dependency. The new cadence fields are additive pipeline bookkeeping, and state.js states that the file is not read by the app, so no Android identity or storage contract is broken.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The PR changes only scripts files. It does not modify any production Kotlin file under app/src/main/, core/<module>/src/main/, or feature/<module>/src/main/. Therefore, no matching module README.md is required.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The check is not applicable. The pull request changes Node.js sync logic under scripts/sync, not JVM production logic such as Android engines, repositories, ViewModels, or helpers under logic/. It adds hermetic Node tests in scripts/sync/lib/cadence.test.js and registers them in scripts/package.json.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

Two newly generated CodeRabbit findings remain outstanding: one Major finding on the SQLite runtime/test command and one Minor finding on paging the episode-book pace read. No resolved or dismissed state with rationale is provided for either finding. No posted CodeRabbit threads were returned.

Resolution

Fix both findings, then mark each review finding resolved. Alternatively, explicitly dismiss each finding with a short rationale before merge.
