Summary

Go and Rust developers can now store dates, timestamps and decimal numbers in EQL columns, and search them by equality. The new producible types are Date, Timestamp and Numeric (stored and read only) and DateEq, TimestampEq and NumericEq (=).

Some background for readers new to this:

  • EQL is the SQL library we install into a customer's PostgreSQL database to store and search encrypted values. EQL v4 is the set of column types written by Stack Encrypt, our Rust encryption engine.
  • The Go SDK runs Stack Encrypt as a WebAssembly guest.
  • eql-bindings is the Rust crate that defines each EQL type and connects it to the engine.

The engine and the Go SDK already had these three kinds of value. What was missing was a Rust type to hold the plaintext. The by-name path a Go program goes through copies the plaintext out of the engine's protected buffer, and that copy must be wiped from memory when it's dropped. chrono's NaiveDate and DateTime<Utc> and rust_decimal's Decimal keep their fields private, so they can't be wiped. This PR adds three small types of our own that can.

Stacked on #1266.

Changes

eql-bindings: new plaintext types (eql_bindings::v4::plaintext)

  • Date: an i32 count of days since 1970-01-01.
  • Timestamp: i64 Unix seconds and u32 nanoseconds, UTC, with no leap seconds.
  • Decimal: an i128 mantissa and a u8 scale. The value is mantissa × 10^-scale.
  • Each one:
    • is range checked when built, using vitaminc's own rules (Logical::admits, timestamp_nanos), so a value you hold always encrypts;
    • refuses a bad value with a RangeError that names the range, never the value;
    • implements Zeroize and ZeroizeOnDrop;
    • is Clone but not Copy. Stack Encrypt gives each term its own copy, and each copy is wiped too;
    • has a redacted Debug and no PartialEq, Ord or Hash.
  • Each type hands vitaminc the same scalar that chrono's or rust_decimal's type would. So the sealed value (the "leaf") is byte-identical to what any other producer seals for the same value.
  • New optional features: chrono (to and from NaiveDate and DateTime<Utc>) and rust_decimal. The ranges match, so only a leap second is refused. The docs say what wiping doesn't cover: a chrono or rust_decimal value you convert to or from is yours to look after.
  • Plaintext (the by-name dispatch's trait) is implemented for all three.

eql-codegen and generated code

  • ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS gains date, timestamp and numeric storage and eq. plaintext_of maps the three families to the new types.
  • The ordered domains (Ord, OrdOpe, OrdOre) of these families stay refused, with one reason: "the engine derives no order term for a date, timestamp or decimal yet". That check comes before the block ORE one, because the order term is the first thing they wait for.
  • The ordered number and date domains are unchanged: they still store only the order term (no hm) and answer = through it.
  • Regenerated v4/{date,timestamp,numeric,targets}.rs and Go's encrypt/eql/eql_gen.go.

Tests (Rust, packages/eql/tests/encryption)

  • Unit tests in plaintext.rs:
    • round trip through vitaminc's sink, and the range edges with refusals;
    • zeroize() clears every field, and dropping wipes the value in place;
    • neither Debug nor any error shows the value;
    • chrono and rust_decimal conversions, both ways.
  • tests/v4_date_time_numeric.rs:
    • typed and by-name round trips;
    • each leaf equals the one a chrono or rust_decimal value seals, and opens as ours;
    • equality: 1.5 = 1.50, one microsecond is one term, and the three kinds never share a term;
    • a value of the wrong kind is refused;
    • the ordered types are refused with their reason;
    • a new query fixture, v4_ledger_queries.json.
  • PostgreSQL:
    • Rust-sealed rows pass each eql_v4_* domain check, and = finds exactly the right rows;
    • the storage-only columns refuse =;
    • a stored value reads back with its scale and nanoseconds;
    • Go-sealed rows (below) are stored and queried with the fixture's queries.
  • test:encryption:postgres now runs this suite too.

Go

  • A Ledger test model maps encrypt.Date to Date/DateEq, time.Time to Timestamp/TimestampEq, and encrypt.Decimal to Numeric/NumericEq.
  • The Go test checks that:
    • each value seals and opens back (a decimal with its scale, an instant in UTC with its nanoseconds);
    • Eq normalises scale and compares an instant to the microsecond, regardless of time zone;
    • a zero or out-of-range date, an out-of-range instant and a scale above 28 are refused with ErrEncoding;
    • Eq matches the Rust query fixture byte for byte.
  • TestV4LedgerRowsMatchTheCommittedFixture writes v4_ledger_rows.json, which Rust opens and PostgreSQL queries.
  • The guest's and SDK's catalog tests list the six types; the three Eq types answer eq.
  • Updated the Go README, doc.go, the stashgen README and the CHANGELOG.

Docs and release

  • eql-bindings README and CHANGELOG, and the fixtures README.
  • A new changeset, .changeset/eql-v4-date-timestamp-numeric.md (@cipherstash/eql minor). It's kept separate from the shared changesets so it doesn't conflict with sibling PRs.

Verification

  • packages/eql: mise run types:check (on the committed tree), test:codegen, test:crates, codegen:parity and test:encryption all passed.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql-bindings --all-features passed (124 lib tests, plus doctests).
  • Clippy -D warnings on eql-bindings was clean for every feature set: none, stack-encrypt, targets, chrono, rust_decimal, and all. It was also clean on eql-codegen and eql-encryption-tests. Rustdoc with -D warnings was clean.
  • mise run test:encryption:postgres passed against a disposable PostgreSQL 17.5 cluster (initdb, TCP on localhost). Docker wasn't running. All 8 database tests passed, including the 2 new ones.
  • Rebuilt all five WASI guests. mise run wasm:guest:test passed. mise run go:test passed, mise run go:lint reported 0 issues, and go generate ./... leaves no diff.
  • Root workspace:
    • clippy -D warnings, cargo fmt --check and mise run doc passed.
    • mise x --env test -- cargo nextest run --workspace --all-features --no-fail-fast: 1220 passed and 1 failed. The failure is stack-encrypt::stored_rows every_frozen_row_opens_and_seals_as_it_did: the ORE/OPE term bytes differ from the frozen stored_rows_v1.json. This PR doesn't touch packages/stack-encrypt or the root Cargo.lock (git diff origin/feat/eql-v4-ordered-ope-types -- packages/stack-encrypt Cargo.lock is empty), so it fails the same way on the base branch. I didn't regenerate the frozen fixture. See Review notes.
  • Stack Encrypt is unchanged, so there are no mutants to run on it.
  • cargo publish -p eql-bindings --dry-run --all-features stops at "failed to select a version for stack-encrypt ^0.3.0". CI treats that as a warning, and it's the same on the base branch.

Review notes

  • Where to look first: packages/eql/crates/eql-bindings/src/v4/plaintext.rs, then the reason ordering in eql-codegen/src/bindings.rs (encryption_gap). Most of the rest is generated code or tests.
  • Questions for Dan:
    1. Date epoch. ADR-0002's leaf table says the Date payload counts days with 0001-01-01 as day 1. vitaminc 0.6's value model (Logical::Date, which the frame and every producer use) counts days since 1970-01-01. Date follows vitaminc 0.6, and its constructor is named from_days_since_epoch to make that explicit. Should the ADR's table be amended?
    2. time.Time for a date column. ADR-0002 says a Go field whose target is a date family also accepts a time.Time, taking its calendar day in its own location. This PR maps only encrypt.Date to Date/DateEq. A time.Time field there is refused as the wrong kind. Adding it needs a write conversion and a decision on what it opens back as (midnight in which zone?). I left it out rather than guess. Do you want it as a follow-up?
    3. Go decimal type. ADR-0002 mentions shopspring/decimal. The SDK already has encrypt.Decimal (vitaminc's vcvalue.Decimal, with ParseDecimal), and I used that, which adds no dependency. OK to keep, or should stashgen also accept shopspring/decimal.Decimal?
  • Decided: timestamp equality truncates. TimestampEq truncates an instant to the microsecond (the nanoseconds below it are dropped, never rounded) for both the equality term and the order term, as vitaminc does. It doesn't round half to even the way PostgreSQL does when it parses input. Matching PostgreSQL isn't a goal: timestamps are stored in many places besides PostgreSQL, and a term should mean the same thing in every store and agree with the order term. ADR-0002 is amended (2026-10-19) to say so, and the eql-bindings and Go docs say "truncated" plainly. Unit tests now pin it, including floor behaviour before 1970.
  • Pre-existing failure: the frozen stack-encrypt stored_rows test fails locally on the base branch too, and it's outside this diff. It looks like the order-term change in feat(stack-encrypt)!: derive every order term over its ADR-0002 order key, and order floats #1242 / feat(eql-bindings): produce the OPE-ordered EQL v4 types #1266 against the frozen fixture. Flagging it rather than touching a frozen file.
  • Reason strings carry (#1236) like the existing reasons (#1132, #1131). They also appear in the generated Go doc comments, as the others already do. The hand-written code comments have no issue numbers.
  • Expected rebase with feat(eql-bindings): produce Smallint and SmallintEq from i16 #1267 (smallint): both add rows to ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS, the generated tables and the same catalog test lists, and both reword the "no Rust plaintext type" reason the same way. Whichever lands second regenerates and merges those lists.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for encrypting and decrypting EQL v4 date, timestamp, and numeric values in Rust and Go.
    • Added equality queries for these types. Decimal equality ignores scale differences; timestamp equality uses microsecond precision, truncating sub-microsecond values.
    • Added optional conversions to standard date/time and decimal types.
  • Limitations

    • Ordered date, timestamp, and numeric queries remain unavailable.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds EQL v4 date, timestamp, and numeric storage and equality types in Rust and Go. It adds checked Rust plaintext representations, producer and target dispatch, Go ledger support, and cross-language tests. Ordered variants remain unavailable because the engine does not derive their order terms.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 15419

This change lets Rust and Go store dates, timestamps and decimals in EQL columns and search them by equality. Ordered variants remain refused. No functional defect was identified. Two stale sentences in the eql-bindings changelog and README still say these types are not yet producible, which contradicts the new documentation. Fixing them is a quick, low-risk edit before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 15419

The new types retain existing key and column scoping, and no introduced security weakness was demonstrated. Residual risk centers on cross-language compatibility and plaintext handling, which were not validated end to end during this review.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The material exposure expansion is processing values through six additional named encrypted targets and their equality-query paths. Those operations remain scoped by the supplied cipher or keyset and column context; the inspected changes do not establish broader tenant or service authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new dispatch cases reuse existing typed helpers rather than introducing an alternate opening boundary. Kind checks reject incompatible plaintext frames, and opening delegates to decrypt_as with the expected column context. Integration test source includes cross-kind and wrong-target rejection cases; those tests were inspected, not executed.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — In the inspected plaintext lifecycle, cleanup follows ownership rather than success-only callbacks: extracted plaintext is guarded by Zeroizing, owned scalar encoding drops its input, and decrypted plaintext is consumed into the returned frame. This supports cleanup on ordinary errors and unwinding, but does not establish erasure after process abort or of every transient machine-level copy.

Reviewed at 2443429 against feat/eql-v4-ordered-ope-types (82ab168). No prior review comments on this PR.

Nothing blocking. The leaf parity, range checks and wiping all hold up under the code and the vitaminc 0.6.0 source; the findings are documentation precision. Ranked, most important first:

  1. Low: "That covers every copy this crate and Stack Encrypt make" overstates what is wiped (plaintext.rs:28). The scalar handed to the sink is a Copy Int inside a Copy Physical, and Timestamp::count() materialises an i128 on the stack; none of those are wiped. That is exactly what vitaminc's own NaiveDate, DateTime<Utc> and i64 sources do, so it is not a regression, but a reader auditing wiping will take the sentence literally. Inline comment has a suggested wording.
  2. Low: vitaminc-aead 0.6.0 already ships a wipeable Timestamp (vitaminc_aead::Timestamp: Zeroize + ZeroizeOnDrop, redacted Debug, refuses the leap second at build, FromScalar, same nanosecond leaf). The module doc says the ecosystem offers nothing that can be wiped. The reason not to reuse it is real, I checked: EncryptFrom<S> for StackCipherText and EqualityTerm needs S: Encrypt + Clone (packages/stack-encrypt/src/target/operations.rs:881,896) and vitaminc's type is deliberately not Clone, and its only constructor takes a DateTime<Utc>. Worth one sentence in the module doc so the next reader does not file "why are there two".
  3. Low: docs.rs will not render the chrono / rust_decimal conversions. [package.metadata.docs.rs] features = ["targets"] does not turn those features on, so From<NaiveDate> for Date and friends are invisible on docs.rs. Add them to the list (or all-features = true).
  4. Nit: RangeError::LeapSecond from the raw constructor. Timestamp::new(secs, 1_234_567_890) from a caller who mixed up units is just an invalid nanosecond field, but the error says "a leap second has no encoding". Fine for the chrono path; slightly misleading for the plain API.
  5. Informational: the six new types have no frozen row fixture yet. v4_ledger_rows.json is regenerable (EQL_UPDATE_FIXTURES=1), and the fixtures README says a frozen copy will be cut later. That matches how #1266 handled the ordered types, so not a blocker, but until it is cut a leaf-encoding change to these three kinds would be regenerated away rather than caught. If there is no issue tracking the cut, it may be worth one.

On the review-notes questions, with what the code says:

  • Q1 (date epoch). vitaminc 0.6.0 counts from 1970-01-01: kinds::chrono::date_days is num_days_from_ce() - 719_163, MIN_DATE_DAYS/MAX_DATE_DAYS are pinned to NaiveDate::MIN/MAX on that basis, and Logical::Date admits that count. The PR follows the engine; the ADR-0002 leaf table is what is stale.
  • Q4 (microsecond truncation). Confirmed engine-side behaviour, not this PR's. One consequence worth recording wherever it ends up: a client holding nanoseconds (chrono, Go time.Time) derives a term for .1234567 that matches a stored .123456, while PostgreSQL parsing the same text as a plaintext timestamp would round it to .123457. The storage-only and ciphertext paths are unaffected.

What I verified as sound:

  • Leaf parity. Date visits (Logical::Date, Int::I32(days)), Timestamp visits (Logical::Timestamp(Nanos), Int::I128(secs*10^9+nanos)), Decimal visits (Logical::Decimal{scale}, Int::I128(mantissa)). Those are byte-for-byte the scalars vitaminc's NaiveDate, DateTime<Utc> (via conv::timestamp_nanos) and rust_decimal::Decimal (via decimal::parts) sources emit. The unit tests assert scalar(&ours) == scalar(theirs) at NaiveDate::MIN/MAX, NaiveDateTime::MIN/MAX, pre-1970 instants, 2^96-1, and rust_decimal's negative zero; the encryption suite asserts the stored c opens to the same frame as a chrono/rust_decimal-sealed value, and the Go-sealed ledger rows open in Rust with the hm query bytes equal in both languages. Scale is kept in the leaf (1.5 and 1.50 differ in c, agree in hm), which is what rust_decimal produces and what the docs say.
  • Range checks. admits / timestamp_nanos are inclusive at both ends; tests cover each edge and one past it, plus the i32/i64/i128 extremes and u8::MAX scale. i64::MIN * 10^9 fits an i128. The two From impls that skip the check (From<NaiveDate>, From<rust_decimal::Decimal>) cannot produce an out-of-range value: vitaminc's own test pins MIN/MAX_DATE_DAYS to chrono's constants, and rust_decimal's representation is a 96-bit mantissa with scale at most 28, which are the same bounds decimal_in_range applies. "Only a leap second is refused" holds because DateTime<Utc>'s range is NaiveDateTime's, which MIN/MAX_TIMESTAMP_NANOS are pinned to.
  • Error messages. RangeError is a fieldless enum, so neither Debug nor Display can carry the value.
  • Zeroization. Fields are private, both constructors return an owned value, Clone yields an owned value with the same Drop, the owned Encrypt visits through &Self and is then dropped, from_frame builds through FromScalar into the owning type and run_target holds it in Zeroizing, into_frame consumes it. No serde on the plaintexts. The wiped! macro calls zeroize() on each field explicitly (the zeroize crate implements it for i128 and u8 with a volatile write and fence), so there is no derive-field gap. The ManuallyDrop test is a real in-place check.
  • Codegen and Go. ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS, plaintext_of and encryption_gap agree with TARGETS, eql_gen.go and the Go eql_test.go/query_test.go lists; reason strings are identical across the three. gofmt and go vet are clean on the touched Go files. The ledger fixtures are wired into tests that fail on drift in both directions (Go compares everything but c and must open the committed c; Rust opens every row and asserts the query file byte-for-byte).
  • Feature hygiene. v4 is gated at lib.rs, so the ungated pub mod plaintext is fine. All three Cargo.lock files that record eql-bindings by path (packages/eql, languages/golang/encrypt/guest, languages/typescript/packages/protect-ffi) pass cargo metadata --locked; protect-ffi uses the crate without stack-encrypt, so it needs no new entries. chrono 0.4.44 and rust_decimal 1.x are on crates.io, and vitaminc-aead 0.6.0 has the chrono and rust_decimal features the manifest enables. Changeset (@cipherstash/eql minor), eql-bindings CHANGELOG and Go CHANGELOG are present and accurate; no skills/ change is needed (they cover the TypeScript packages, and the SQL domain surface is unchanged).

Checks run locally (packages/eql):

  • cargo check --locked -p eql-bindings with no features, --features stack-encrypt, --features chrono: all compile.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql-bindings --all-features: 124 lib tests pass, doctests pass.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql-codegen: 153 pass.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql-encryption-tests: all non-ignored tests pass, including v4_date_time_numeric (8 passed, 2 ignored PostgreSQL tests).
  • mise run types:check: no drift, tree clean afterwards.
  • cargo metadata --locked in the three lockfile roots above.
  • gofmt -l and go vet on the touched Go packages.

Skipped: the Go test suite (the WASI guests are gitignored and not built here; CI's "WASI check, guests and Go (Linux)" and the macOS/Windows binding jobs are green), the #[ignore] PostgreSQL tests (CI runs test:encryption:postgres), and anything needing CipherStash credentials. CI at this head: all jobs green except four "Shard PG17" jobs and "Go binding (windows-latest)" still pending at the time of review.

🔵 Needs a closer look

The acknowledged date-epoch and timestamp-equality differences from ADR-0002 need maintainer sign-off before becoming persistent data contracts.

What changed in this PR

Extends EQL v4 support for Rust and Go with date, timestamp and decimal storage and equality queries, advancing #1130.

Changes:

  • Adds range-checked Rust plaintext types that wipe their fields on drop, plus optional ecosystem conversions.
  • Enables six EQL types in generated bindings and catalogs; ordered variants remain unavailable.
  • Adds cross-language fixtures and coverage, updates documentation, and records a minor release changeset.

Re-review of the update to ad62f57.

The range-diff against 2443429 changes only the first commit, and it addresses the earlier review:

  1. Wiping scope (plaintext.rs): fixed. The doc now says owned copies, and names the Copy stack temporary handed to vitaminc's sink as not wiped, the same as the engine's primitive, chrono and rust_decimal sources.
  2. vitaminc-aead's own Timestamp: fixed. The module doc says why it isn't reused: the term targets need a Clone plaintext, and it would make chrono a dependency of every build.
  3. docs.rs features: fixed. features = ["targets", "chrono", "rust_decimal"].
  4. RangeError::LeapSecond wording: fixed. The message now says nanoseconds must be below one second first, with the leap-second case as the explanation.
  5. No frozen row fixture for the six new types: unchanged. This was informational only.

One nit: plaintext.rs lines 19–20 are two consecutive empty //! lines before the table. It renders fine, so drop one only if you're touching the file anyway.

CI is green at this head.

Review attestation — automated /code-review medium + /cross-check-review-findings on head ad62f57.

Critical / blocking: none.

Reviewed: v4/plaintext.rs (range checks, zeroize/Drop, redacted Debug, Encrypt/FromScalar impls, chrono and rust_decimal conversions) and the eql-codegen changes (ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS, plaintext_of, ORDER_PENDING_FAMILIES, encryption_gap ordering, updated tests).

  • Ordered date/timestamp/numeric domains stay refused, and the new reason is checked before the block-ORE one.
  • The earlier review threads (wipe-scope docs, vitaminc Timestamp rationale, docs.rs features, leap-second message) are fixed in the current code.

Not reviewed in depth: the Go test model and the generated files (eql_gen.go, v4/*.rs), which rely on the regeneration drift checks. I did not run the test suites.

Findings: one non-blocking nit, inline: the unreachable unwrap_or_default() fallbacks would return a wrong value rather than fail if the ranges drifted.

Notes for the author (already in the PR description):

  • The frozen stored_rows_v1.json nextest failure also occurs on the base branch. Please make sure it is tracked before the stack merges.
  • The open ADR-0002 questions (date epoch, time.Time for date, decimal type, microsecond truncation vs round-half-even) need a maintainer decision.

Re-review at 5f78cf2e, against the rewritten feat/eql-v4-ordered-ope-types (f3ddc0fe).

The range-diff from ad62f57 is a rebase plus two real changes. The rebase: #1266's two commits (d6c71483e, 31563a5d5) left the PR because they are now in the base, and the two PR commits re-applied over it with no conflict-shaped edits. The author's changes, both in response to the reviews at ad62f57:

  1. Timestamp equality truncates, and ADR-0002 now says so. The amendment (dated 2026-10-19) strikes the round-half-to-even bullet and replaces it with floor on the signed count since the epoch, giving the reason (one rule for = and the order term, and no dependence on any one store's parsing). The eql-bindings module doc, README, CHANGELOG, changeset, Go README, doc.go and Go CHANGELOG all say "truncated, never rounded". I checked the claim against vitaminc 0.6.0 rather than the prose: vitaminc_normalize::timestamp (scalar.rs:192) does div_euclid / rem_euclid on the nanosecond count and then sub / 1_000 * 1_000, which is floor on the signed count; the equality path reaches it through normalize (scalar.rs:142) and vitaminc-ore's order path through order.rs:250, and the ORE domain is vitaminc/ore/value/timestamp-micros/v1 (order.rs:54). So the ADR's "both terms normalise through the same function" is literally true. The two new assertions in equality_terms_follow_the_baseline pin it (.1234567 to .123456, and -500 ns to 23:59:59.999999, which is the floor case), and they pass locally. This closes Codex's P1: it was a design question, the maintainer decided, and the decision is recorded where the next reader will look.
  2. The three From<&T> conversions expect instead of unwrap_or_default. Each message names the range and no value. New tests drive the conversion at both ends of each range (MIN_DATE_DAYS/MAX_DATE_DAYS against NaiveDate::MIN/MAX, MIN_TIMESTAMP_NANOS/MAX_TIMESTAMP_NANOS against NaiveDateTime::MIN/MAX, rust_decimal MIN/MAX and ±(2^96-1) at scale 28), so if vitaminc's and chrono's or rust_decimal's ranges ever drift apart, the expect fires in the unit test rather than in a caller. This closes the automated review's nit.

Status of the earlier items

Item Status at 5f78cf2e
Wiping-scope wording (plaintext.rs) fixed (since ad62f57)
Why vitaminc-aead's Timestamp is not reused fixed (since ad62f57)
docs.rs features fixed (since ad62f57)
RangeError::LeapSecond wording fixed (since ad62f57)
No frozen row fixture for the six new types unchanged; informational, and the author has flagged it to the maintainer rather than filing an issue, which is fine
Doubled empty //! at plaintext.rs:19-20 still there; nit, inline
unwrap_or_default in the conversions (automated review) fixed this round
Round-half-even vs truncation (Codex) decided and recorded this round, see 1 above

Findings

Nothing new. The one standing item is the nit above.

Verified as sound at this head

  • Leaf parity, range checks and zeroization are unchanged from ad62f57 and I re-read plaintext.rs in full at this head: the sources still visit (Logical::Date, I32), (Logical::Timestamp(Nanos), I128) and (Logical::Decimal{scale}, I128); admits / timestamp_nanos are the only range gates and are inclusive; wiped! still zeroizes each field explicitly and the ManuallyDrop test is still the in-place check; no Copy, no PartialEq, redacted Debug, no serde on the plaintexts. The expect calls are the only new code in the non-test part of the crate and are unreachable by construction, which the new tests now demonstrate rather than assert.
  • The targets, codegen (ENCRYPTION_DOMAINS, plaintext_of, encryption_gap), generated v4/*.rs and eql_gen.go are byte-identical to ad62f57 apart from the rebase; types:check reports no drift.
  • The three Cargo.lock files that record eql-bindings by path (packages/eql, languages/golang/encrypt/guest, languages/typescript/packages/protect-ffi) all pass cargo metadata --locked after the rebase.

Checks run locally (packages/eql, Rust 1.94.1)

  • cargo test --locked -p eql-bindings --all-features: 124 lib tests, 74 integration tests and 7 doctests pass.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql-codegen: 154 lib tests plus 14 integration tests pass.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql-encryption-tests: all non-ignored tests pass, including v4_date_time_numeric (8 passed, 2 ignored PostgreSQL tests).
  • mise run types:check: no drift, tree clean afterwards.
  • cargo metadata --locked in the three lockfile roots.

CI at this head: every check green, including the four PG17 shards, both Go binding jobs and the Windows binding that were pending last time.

Skipped: the Go suite (the WASI guests are gitignored here; CI's Linux, macOS and Windows jobs are green), the #[ignore] PostgreSQL tests (CI runs test:encryption:postgres), and anything needing credentials.

//! built only from a `DateTime<Utc>`, which would make chrono a dependency
//! of every build. The types here are `Clone`, and a clone is wiped too.

Nit, still standing from the last review: lines 19 and 20 are two consecutive empty //! lines. Rustdoc renders them as one paragraph break, so this is cosmetic. The file was touched this round, so it could go now.

Re-review of the update to 902bfd3.

Against 07b8b8e, the only change is removing the doubled empty //! line in plaintext.rs. That closes the last nit from review 5566356617. The second commit is unchanged apart from the rebase. No new findings.

The informational item still stands: the six new types have no frozen row fixture yet. CI was still running at the time of this note.

Restacked onto the new #1266 and force-pushed. The conflicts were the smallint additions from #1267 and #1266: smallint is producible, so the tests no longer expect a no-plaintext reason for it. Generated files were regenerated, and the EQL crate tests and the Go module's tests pass at this head.

Incremental re-review of the restack to 8d7ee1d (onto #1266's 548c546). Range-diff against 902bfd3: both commits were rewritten, and every changed line is a rebase adaptation to the smallint work now on next (#1267) and in #1266. No substantive edit.

What the rebase changed. This PR no longer touches the smallint rows of eql_gen.go or v4/targets.rs, nor the "no Rust plaintext type" rewording, since next carries those now; the diff is down to the date, timestamp and numeric rows. The codegen targets.rs test loops over ["date", "timestamp", "numeric"] with "", eq producible and ord/ord_ope/ord_ore refused with the order-term reason, and its smallint assertions are gone from this PR. tests/targets.rs no longer expects a smallint reason; v4_types.rs imports smallint beside plaintext; eql_test.go, query_test.go and native_ops.rs keep the base's smallint entries and add the three Eq types; doc.go, both READMEs and the fixtures README merge the two lists. The fixtures README paragraph now reads "Types made producible since are sealed into their own regenerable row fixtures (see the table above), the date, timestamp and numeric types by their own Go model (Ledger)…", which is right with v4_smallint_rows.json in the table. ORDER_PENDING_FAMILIES is still date/timestamp/numeric, so smallint's ordered domains are untouched by this PR's reason ordering. plaintext.rs is identical to 902bfd3, and no fixture changed (v4_ledger_queries.json, v4_ledger_rows.json and the frozen files are byte-identical).

Earlier findings. Everything from reviews 5565822644, 5566356617 and 5566619337 remains fixed. The one informational item, that the six new types have no frozen row fixture yet (v4_ledger_rows.json is regenerable), is unchanged and still informational; the author's reply (thread) left the cut to the maintainer.

Nit: the PR body's "Expected rebase with #1267" paragraph is now done and can go.

Checks (no credentials, at this head, since this branch is not inside #1280's stack): mise run types:check no drift; cargo test --locked -p eql-codegen -p eql-bindings --all-features (eql-codegen 154 unit, eql-bindings 124 unit, every integration suite and the doctests pass); cargo test --locked -p eql-encryption-tests (v4_date_time_numeric 8 passed, 2 ignored without a database; v4_order 12 passed, 2 ignored; v4_types 14 passed, 5 ignored; targets 16, heap_hygiene 2, text_eq 8 passed). CI green at this head.

Rebased onto the new #1266 (the chain is now on next after #1262, #1263 and #1264). No conflicts. The guest and EQL Cargo.lock files in the first commit now name vitaminc-aead 0.6.1 for eql-bindings, to match next; every lockfile passes --locked at both commits.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the stale list of waiting types after this change.

Lines 166-169 still say that Date, Timestamp and Numeric wait "for a choice of their Rust plaintext types (#1130)". This PR resolves #1130. The new table at lines 122-124 and the paragraph at lines 126-137 document these types as producible. Only their ordered variants remain refused, and #1236 is the reason. A reader now gets two conflicting statements in the same section.

The `date`, `timestamp` and `numeric` families say why they are still
unproducible: the engine has their kinds, and their Rust plaintext types
are not chosen yet.

Remove the stale date/timestamp/numeric sentence from the Smallint entry.

Lines 30-32 say these families are still unproducible because "their Rust plaintext types are not chosen yet". The new entry at lines 33-48 says the base and Eq types are now producible from v4::plaintext. The new entry also says the ordered types are refused only because no order term exists (#1236). The two entries in the same [Unreleased] section now contradict each other. Delete the old sentence or reword it.

I think this is still referring to the now removed wipe method. Probably needs to be rewritten.

Date, DateEq, Timestamp, TimestampEq, Numeric and NumericEq become
producible. The engine and the Go SDK already carried the three kinds;
what was missing was a Rust plaintext type the by-name dispatch can hold.
That dispatch copies the plaintext out of the frame's Protected buffer and
needs the copy to be wiped, and chrono's NaiveDate and DateTime<Utc> and
rust_decimal's Decimal keep their fields private, so they cannot be.

So eql-bindings gets its own plaintexts in v4::plaintext:

- Date: an i32 of days since 1970-01-01, the count vitaminc's value model
  stores a date as;
- Timestamp: i64 Unix seconds and u32 nanoseconds, UTC, no leap seconds;
- Decimal: an i128 mantissa and a u8 scale.

Each is built range checked through vitaminc's own rules (Logical::admits,
timestamp_nanos), so a value of one always encrypts, and a refusal is a
RangeError that names the range, never the value. Each implements Zeroize
and ZeroizeOnDrop, has a redacted Debug and no PartialEq, and is Clone but
not Copy: Stack Encrypt hands each term its own copy, and a clone is wiped
too. Each describes itself to vitaminc as the same scalar chrono's or
rust_decimal's type does, so the leaf is the one any other producer seals.
The new chrono and rust_decimal features convert to and from those types;
only a leap second is refused, because the ranges are the same.

The ordered domains of these families (Ord, OrdOpe, OrdOre) stay refused,
with one reason placed before the block ORE one: the engine derives no
order term for a date, timestamp or decimal yet. Those domains answer = on
the order term and carry no hm, and that is unchanged.

The Go SDK's encrypt/eql table, regenerated, marks the six producible,
from encrypt.Date, time.Time and encrypt.Decimal, which stashgen already
maps to these kinds. The Rust tests cover both entry points, the leaf
against chrono's and rust_decimal's, the equality baseline (1.5 = 1.50,
one term per microsecond), refusals, and PostgreSQL.
…rom Go, and store Go's rows in PostgreSQL

The Go side of the previous commit: an encrypt.Date, a time.Time and an
encrypt.Decimal field reach Date/DateEq, Timestamp/TimestampEq and
Numeric/NumericEq through encrypt_into, as ADR-0002's host-language rules
map them. Nothing in the SDK changed for it; this proves it end to end.

A Ledger test model holds one field of each type. It is a model of its
own, under Profile's table with columns of its own, because Profile's rows
are frozen in stored_v4_rows_v1.json. The Go test checks that every field
seals with the right keys and opens back (a decimal with its scale, an
instant in UTC with its nanoseconds), that Eq normalises a decimal's scale
and compares an instant to the microsecond and by instant rather than wall
clock, that out-of-range values are refused with ErrEncoding, and that its
Eq queries match the Rust fixture byte for byte.

TestV4LedgerRowsMatchTheCommittedFixture writes v4_ledger_rows.json. Rust
opens those Go-sealed rows into eql-bindings' plaintexts, and a PostgreSQL
test stores them in eql_v4_* columns and runs = with the fixture's queries.

The Go README, doc.go, the stashgen README and the CHANGELOG list the six
types and the Go type each takes.

Rebased onto next at 0800375 (after #1283 merged main back in). Only lockfiles changed, by exactly the crate moves that merge brought; the commits' content is otherwise identical to the previous head. Every Cargo.lock passes --locked at every commit, and the full Rust, guest, EQL and Go suites pass at the chain's tips against the merged lock.
