refactor: remove the duplicate plain pr comment path - #25
Removes the duplicate plain-comment path instead of aliasing it:
gcb pr --comment without --file/--line refuses with an anchor-requirement error; no migration hint
only anchored comments (--file and --line) still use the review-comment request
gcb gh pr comment remains the normal conversation-comment path
the pr shorthand keeps the legacy exit code 3 for an unreachable broker; direct gcb gh keeps 1
gh option scanning handles help, missing values, short flags such as -R, single-dash operands, literal --body --help and the -- terminator in one pass; unknown options still fail as unknown
corepack yarn check: 309 pass.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
gcb pr --comment now requires both --file and --line for anchored review comments; use gcb gh pr comment for plain comments.
gcb gh now handles help flags consistently and validates missing option values, unknown options, and extra arguments.
Broker request errors now return the configured exit code, including the distinct code used by catalogued pull request commands.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
gcb gh now handles help and flag values based on argument position, stops option checks at --, and returns a configurable code for broker errors. gcb pr --comment requires file and line anchors when both are absent. TypeScript configurations no longer enable JSON module resolution.
Changes: GitHub command help parsing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse help and flag values packages/client/src/commands/gh.ts, test/unit/gh-command.test.ts
runGh handles help based on argument position, validates values for recognized flags, and stops unknown-option checks at --. Tests cover help, missing values, and arguments after the separator.
Return configured code for broker errors packages/client/src/commands/gh.ts, packages/client/src/index.ts, test/unit/gh-command.test.ts
When a broker request throws, runGh writes an unreachable: message and returns the configured code, which defaults to 1. The catalogued pr dispatch passes code 3. A test checks the pr result.
PR comment anchor requirement
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Document and validate comment anchors packages/client/src/commands/pr.ts, test/unit/commands.test.ts
The --comment help text describes the file and line anchor requirement and directs plain comments to gcb gh pr comment. runPr rejects comments when both anchor fields are absent. Tests cover unanchored comments.
The delegated PR command may return the wrong exit code when the broker is unreachable. Confirm that path before merging.

Explanation
The title "refactor: remove the duplicate plain pr comment path" matches the main change. The PR removes the plain-comment path from gcb pr --comment, so plain comments now fail with an anchor-requirement error. The changeset also includes gh option parsing changes, the exit-code change for pr shorthand, and tsconfig cleanup. The title does not mention these, but it does not conflict with them and it names the primary change.

gcb gh ... --help was only help when the token landed where parseArgs sees a flag (last, or followed by another --flag). With a positional after it (gcb gh pr comment --help 7) it was taken as a value and the command went on to demand a broker. help is now declared boolean; a known value flag still merges its next token, so --body --help stays data.
bare gcb pr --comment answered --repo is required (or the body/number requirement) instead of the migration message, while --close is deliberately emitted before those checks. The --comment refusal now sits beside it, and the anchored --comment --file --line path still works. Both are covered by tests.
No further issues found. The removal is consistent: the unanchored request remains supported on the broker for older clients, while the CLI points at gcb gh pr comment.

Re-reviewed 6f3afda (drop the migration hint) and pushed abd2f89: the ordering comment and the test name still described the hint that was removed, so both now describe the anchor requirement. Behaviour is unchanged.
Dropping the hint is fine: the usage text still names gcb gh pr comment for a plain comment, and the refusal now says what --comment does here rather than naming a command. corepack yarn check is 302 pass and CI is green on abd2f89.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Reject another known flag as a missing value.
If a user runs gcb gh pr create --head feat --title --draft --body description, this branch turns --draft into the title. The broker accepts that non-empty title, but the draft flag is absent. The command can create a non-draft PR instead of refusing the missing title. Reject a following known flag as a missing value; retain the intended --body --help handling and allow an explicit equals-form value when the literal flag text is intended. Fixed in cd11bf1: a following known flag is no longer consumed as a value, so --title --draft fails as a missing title; --body --help stays literal data.

Re-reviewed cd11bf1. Verified: --title --draft now fails as needs --title instead of using --draft as the title; --body --help and --body -x still pass through as data; --title=--draft remains the explicit equals form. The new test covers the reported case. corepack yarn check is 303 pass and CI is green on cd11bf1.
One non-blocking note: the single-dash spelling of a long flag (--title -draft) is still consumed as the value. That is parseArgs's existing normalization for every command — the non-gh gcb pr path behaves the same — not something this PR introduced, and the equals form is the explicit escape, so I am leaving it out of this PR.
Fixed in cd11bf1: a following known flag is no longer consumed as a value, so --title --draft fails as a missing title; --body --help stays literal data. I also checked gh: -draft is accepted as the draft flag and --title -draft behaves as a value, so the single-dash normalization matches gh here; no parser change.
Confirmed against gh 2.103.3, not from memory: gh pr create -draft ... reaches the required title/body check, so -draft is the draft flag; gh pr create --title -draft ... gets past parsing to the GraphQL head error, so -draft is the title. The single-dash behaviour matches gh exactly — no parser change needed. Approval stands on cd11bf1.

Re-reviewed 36db37d and pushed a834f56 (refactor: derive the known flags from the allowed set). The missing-value check kept a second copy of the flag list, which could drift from the one the unknown-option check uses; it now derives from that one set, with help the only addition. Behaviour is unchanged:
--reviewer --draft, --title --draft and --label --repo fail as --x needs a value
--body --help and --body -x remain data
--title=--draft keeps the explicit equals form
single-dash operands still match gh (verified earlier against gh 2.103.3)
corepack yarn check: 304 pass, 0 fail (the packaged-host e2e test needs the proxy env unset here; unrelated to this PR). CI is green on a834f56. Approving.

Re-reviewed 7036620 (ignoring CodeRabbit). --title --help / --title -h now print usage instead of failing as a missing title, while --body --help / --body -h remain literal body text; --title=--help is the escape when the literal text is actually wanted. That is the right cut: body is the free-text flag where a literal --help is plausible, and the equals form covers every other flag.
Verified unchanged: --title --draft and --body --draft still fail as --x needs a value, --reviewer --help prints help, and --help before a positional still prints the catalog. corepack yarn check: 305 pass locally; CI green on 7036620 (Linux/WSL/macOS/Windows-refused). Approving.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The exit-code change is right: gcb pr view (a catalogued shorthand) now returns 3 when the broker is unreachable, matching runPr's contract; direct gcb gh and gcb run keep 1. Verified all three by running them.
The help reordering (help before missing-value validation) regressed -h: --title --help printed help, but --title -h became the title and went on to the broker. parseArgs normalises only the token it reads at flag position, so a value flag's next -h was consumed as its value. 61372d8 normalises -h in the merge pass as well; a body's -h is merged first and remains data. The help and literal-body tests now cover both spellings.
Verified: --title -h, --title --help, --reviewer -h → usage; --body -h and --body --help → literal data; --title --draft still --title needs a value; unreachable exit codes 3 / 1 / 1 for pr / gh / run. corepack yarn check: 306 pass. CI green on 61372d8. Approving.
Declare help a boolean in the gh parser, so a --help that follows a positional still prints the catalog; a value flag's next token is merged before parsing and stays data. Refuse a plain --comment before --repo, as --close already does, so the migration message is what the caller sees.
A value flag followed by a known flag now fails, including optional flags such as --reviewer before --draft; single-dash operands and literal --help/-h remain values.
The missing-value check kept a second copy of the flag list, which could drift from the one the unknown-option check uses. Build one set and add help to it.
Resolving help after parseArgs lost the -h spelling: parseArgs normalises only the token it reads at flag position, so a value flag's next -h was consumed as that value while --help still won. Normalise -h in the merge pass too; a body's -h is merged before that line. Extend the help and literal-body tests.
Fold value merging, help discovery and missing-value checks into one loop, keep unknown flags unknown, and treat common repo/host/socket flags as value-taking.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reviewed 150a8c9 (the one-pass option scan); corepack yarn check is 307 pass locally.
The refactor is sound: help still wins after a value flag except a body's literal --help/-h, unknown flags stay unknown instead of becoming values, and the common repo/host/socket flags now report a missing value.
One non-blocking inconsistency: the scan normalises only -h, so the documented short spelling -R is not treated as a value flag. gcb gh pr view 7 -R silently falls back to the origin remote instead of -R needs a value, while --repo and --R both error. Suggested fix: reuse parseArgs's normalisation (-h → --help, then ^-(?=[A-Za-z]) → --) and report the spelling the caller typed; a test for the common flags' missing-value path would cover it.
Two edge notes, not regressions from main:
gcb gh ... -- --help still prints help; runGh's allowed-flag check does not treat -- as a terminator either;
--body -- now errors as a missing body, as it does on main.
The help entry in the parseArgs booleans is also now redundant, since help is resolved before parsing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reviewed b8388e8 on top of 150a8c9; corepack yarn check is 308 pass locally and CI is green (Linux, WSL, macOS, Windows-refused).
The short-flag normalisation now mirrors parseArgs: -R reports -R needs a value with the spelling the caller typed, -body --help behaves like --body --help, and -title --draft fails as a missing title. Dropping the redundant help boolean is correct — help is resolved before parseArgs runs.
The resolveJsonModule removal is fine with the pinned TypeScript 7 under nodenext plus import attributes: yarn build and the packaged e2e tests pass, and version.ts's JSON import still resolves from dist/.
The -- and --body -- edges from the previous review are unchanged and remain non-blocking.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reviewed 0077b23 and 54a92f8 on top of b8388e8; corepack yarn check is 309 pass locally and CI is green (Linux, WSL, macOS, Windows-refused).
The -- terminator now stops both the value/help scan and the unknown-option scan: gcb gh pr view 7 -- ... --help, --bogus and -h are positionals (reported as too many positional arguments), while help outside the terminator is unchanged. Ending the scan with rest.push(...rawRest.slice(index)) keeps the remaining tokens raw, which is what parseArgs expects; --body -- still reports a missing body, as on main.
The test passes --repo/--socket explicitly, so it no longer depends on a local checkout or a broker.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
@coderabbitai Confirmed on 54a92f8: gcb pr view and gcb pr close with an unreachable broker socket exit 3, while direct gcb gh exits 1. No configured socket still exits 1, matching the existing runPr contract. The merge-risk note is stale; no code change needed.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.
@JounQin Thanks for checking 54a92f8. Your results confirm the distinction:
With an unreachable broker socket, gcb pr view and gcb pr close exit 3.
With an unreachable broker socket, direct gcb gh exits 1.
With no configured socket, the command exits 1, consistent with the existing runPr contract.
I withdraw the stale merge-risk note. No code change is needed for this concern.
