feat: add a fixed gh api action for review reads - #40
Adds the fixed gh api action model and uses it for review-by-id:
gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --jq .body
The action declares a fixed endpoint:
GET repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{number}/reviews/{id}
Only the typed positional values are substituted; the caller cannot supply a URL, method or query. It needs only pull_requests: read and runs through the existing runGhAction boundary.
When --jq is present, the token is written to the isolated gh config instead of GH_TOKEN, so a caller expression cannot print it from env; the config host key is lowercased. --id only accepts a canonical safe decimal id, is rejected beside any other action, and --jq is rejected without --id or with an empty expression.
No --show or show-review alias; includes a changeset.

Walkthrough
The client adds gcb pr review --id to fetch a review by pull request number and review ID. The command supports an optional --jq expression. The action catalog builds a fixed GET request and declares the required pull request read permission. When jq is present, the host runner stores the token in its isolated GitHub configuration instead of the child environment.
Changes: Review lookup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Fixed review API action packages/core/src/actions.ts, test/unit/actions.test.ts, README.md, .changeset/review-by-id.md
The action catalog adds pr:review-by-id. buildGhArgv substitutes and encodes repository, pull request number, and review ID values in the endpoint. Tests check request construction and reject zero or unsafe numeric values. The README lists the required permission, and the changeset records patch releases.
The client dispatches review requests with --id, validates the ID, pull request number, and optional --jq, then forwards repository and connection options. CLI tests cover dispatch and validation.
When an action includes jq, the host runner writes the token to the isolated hosts.yml configuration and omits it from the child environment. The test checks the normalized host and token placement.

1. gcb pr review --id cannot work — the new branch passes the subcommand into runPr.
packages/client/src/index.ts:67-69 passes rest (which begins with review) to runPr, but runPr refuses every positional at packages/client/src/commands/pr.ts:128:
The only form that actually reaches the broker is the flag-only gcb pr --number 42 --id 9 (verified: it stops at "no broker socket"), which the PR does not document. The test added at test/unit/commands.test.ts:1162 calls gcb pr --id 9 without review, so it never exercises the branch it is named after.
Either pass rest.slice(1) and test the documented form, or remove the branch: gcb pr review-by-id 42 9 [--jq] already works through the catalog at index.ts:70 and would keep the catalog as the one source for the action, as AGENTS.md asks. If --id is kept, it should be a thin translation and must forward --jq (see 2).
2. The PR body's example fails twice: gcb pr review 42 --id 9 --jq .body.
--jq is not in KNOWN_FLAGS (pr.ts:31-34), so it is rejected first: error: unknown option --jq for gcb pr.
42 is a positional, and only --number is read (pr.ts:128). If the alias stays, either document --number 42 — consistent with the rest of gcb pr — or accept the positional for this action.
--jq belongs to the catalog action. If --id stays, forward it around pr.ts:258-264; otherwise gcb pr --id is less capable than gcb pr review-by-id for no reason.
Reproduced both failures locally; the head's own documented invocation never reaches the broker.
3. README names an action that does not exist.README.md:661 lists pr review --id, but the catalog entry and gcb gh --help both say pr review-by-id. The table's preamble says the catalog is the source; use the catalog name (or both, if the alias is kept and works).
4. No changeset.DEVELOPMENT.md:157 asks for one in the PR that changes a published package. This changes gcb-core and gcb-client (and, through the fixed group, the version of all three) but adds no .changeset/*.md, so the feature ships with no version bump or changelog entry.
Cleanups (non-blocking)
packages/core/src/actions.ts:43-50: /** One allowed \gh` action. */now sits aboveApiSpec, and GhActionlost its docstring. MoveApiSpec` above that comment.
buildGhArgv duplicates the flag loop (actions.ts:370-382 vs 397-430). Build the prefix first (['api','--method',method,endpoint] vs command + positionals), run the existing loop once, and append --repo only when api is undefined. That removes ~20 lines and makes repeatable, exactlyOneOf, bodyRequiredWith and the title/body limits apply to API actions too; today an API action with a repeatable flag would throw "must be a string".
The buildGhArgv JSDoc still says the repository is "inject[ed] as --repo"; for API actions it is substituted into the endpoint instead. ApiSpec.method also accepts POST/PATCH/PUT although there is no way to pass a body yet — narrowing it to 'GET' until a write action exists avoids dead generality.
The placeholder regex \{([a-zA-Z]+)\} does not match _, so an endpoint written the way the comment names it ({pull_number}, {review_id}) would be sent to gh with the braces instead of failing in buildGhArgv. Either include _ or assert no { remains after substitution.
Verified
buildGhArgv('pr:review-by-id', { number: 42, id: 9, jq: '.body' }, 'acme/widget') produces api --method GET repos/acme/widget/pulls/42/reviews/9 --jq .body; a gh shim confirms runGhAction passes exactly that (plus GH_HOST).
gcb pr review-by-id 42 9 … and gcb gh pr review-by-id 42 9 … dispatch to the broker; gcb pr --number 42 --id 9 does too.
corepack yarn check: 333 pass. CI green on Linux, WSL, macOS and Windows.
CodeRabbit's open comment on github-app.ts refers to the force-pushed-away head c97f2a7; the current head has no provider-side review parsing, so that finding is stale.
The catalog change itself — endpoint, pull_requests: read, canonical argv — is right. Make the documented --id form work (or drop it in favour of pr review-by-id), fix the docs, add the changeset, and this is ready.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-reviewed 6299f06 — the previous findings are addressed.
Verified fixed
gcb pr review now strips the subcommand before handing off (index.ts:67-69). The documented form reaches the broker: gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --jq .body --repo acme/widget (fake broker observed ghAction: "pr:review-by-id", values: { number: "42", id: "9", jq: ".body" }).
--jq is in KNOWN_FLAGS and forwarded; gcb pr --number 42 --id 9 --jq .body also works.
The test now runs gcb pr review … --id … --jq …, so it exercises the branch it names.
README shows both pr review --id and pr:review-by-id; the changeset is present.
buildGhArgv is one path now: shared flag loop, --repo appended only for command actions, ApiSpec comment restored, endpoint.includes('{') guard added, and method narrowed to GET.
buildGhArgv('pr:review-by-id', …) still produces api --method GET repos/acme/widget/pulls/42/reviews/9 --jq .body, and pr:view still ends with --repo acme/widget.
corepack yarn check: 333 pass. CI green on Linux, WSL, macOS and Windows.
Optional nit, not blocking: a bare --jq is silently ignored (gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --jq runs unfiltered), and --jq without --id is ignored too. Two lines beside the --proxy/--id checks — args.has('jq') && args.value('jq') === undefined and args.value('jq') !== undefined && action !== 'review' — would match the file's "a typo must not silently fall through" rule. Fine to do later.
The catalog entry, permission, argv and executor boundary are right. Approving.

Re-reviewed c8bb8ad — both CodeRabbit findings are addressed.
Security (jq and the token)
With --jq, runGhAction writes the token to a 0600 hosts.yml in the per-run GH_CONFIG_DIR and leaves GH_TOKEN out of the child env; env/$ENV can no longer emit it.
Verified with a shim: GH_TOKEN=[], hosts.yml is mode 600, and the temp home is removed afterwards. The non-jq path still receives GH_TOKEN.
The real gh accepts the file (GH_CONFIG_DIR=… gh auth token prints the stored token), so authentication is preserved.
The check is generic (usesJq on the action values); the new test exercises it through the pre-existing pr:view --jq action, so pr:view, pr:list, run:view and run:list are covered as well.
The proxy variables remain visible to jq, but the supported compose shape already injects them into the container (compose.ts); the installation token was the credential at stake.
--id conflicts
gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --resolve THREAD (and --edit, --reply-to, --threads, --status, --body, …) now fail with --id only goes with --number and --jq; the documented gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --jq .body still dispatches to pr:review-by-id with the expected values.
Regression test added; both findings replied to and resolved.
corepack yarn check: 337 pass. CI green on Linux, WSL, macOS and Windows.
Optional follow-ups, not blocking: the changeset still only mentions the new review read, but the jq/token change also affects the existing jq actions, so a line in the release note would be worthwhile. And writeFileSync for hosts.yml runs before the try/finally, so a failed write could leave the temp HOME (and a partial token file) behind; starting the try before file creation would close that narrow path.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-reviewed b2ce943 — both follow-ups from the last approval are in.
If writing hosts.yml fails, the per-run temp HOME is now removed before the error is rethrown, so a partial token file cannot be left behind.
The changeset now records that --jq keeps the token in the isolated gh config rather than the environment, which also documents the change for the existing jq actions.
Verified on this head: the documented gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --jq .body still reaches the broker, --id beside another action still fails with --id only goes with --number and --jq, and no review threads are open. corepack yarn check: 337 pass; CI green on Linux, WSL, macOS and Windows.

Re-reviewed 6900a74 — the gh config host key is now lowercased along with GH_HOST.
Hostnames are case-insensitive, so github.com/GitHub.com must resolve to the same hosts.yml key; the new assertion exercises the mixed-case input (host: 'GitHub.com' → github.com:), and the rest of the jq path is unchanged. The documented gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --jq .body still reaches the broker.

Reject noncanonical and unsafe review identifiers before dispatch.
Number.isInteger(Number(...)) accepts 1e3, 0x9, 9.0, whitespace-padded strings, and unsafe integers. The client forwards these values unchanged, but the broker accepts only /^[1-9][0-9]*$/. Noncanonical values therefore fail as bad-request. The broker also converts canonical digit strings with Number(), so unsafe values can lose precision.
Reject the raw strings at this boundary. Do not canonicalize with String(Number(...)), because conversion can change identifiers or emit scientific notation.

@coderabbitai Fixed in 33ff160: both --number and --id now require a canonical positive decimal string within the safe-integer range, and the raw --id is forwarded unchanged. A noncanonical value such as 9.0 is rejected at the CLI boundary instead of reaching the broker as bad-request.
@JounQin Thanks. I checked 33ff160. Both --number and --id now require canonical positive decimal strings within the safe-integer range. The review dispatch forwards --id unchanged.
The added regression test checks that 9.0 fails at the CLI boundary. This addresses the reported concern. I inspected the code but did not run tests.

## Rules that are not obvious from the code
- **A review round is not finished until every claim has been read, fixed, or answered.** Resolve the ones
that no longer hold, reply to the ones that are fixed, and say plainly which are left. A thread left open
is a claim nobody checked, and a bot whose report cannot be read — because the tool truncates it, or
because its finding is below a preamble — is a gap in the tool worth fixing before the review.

Re-reviewed 33ff160 (with d6f9087).
Canonical ids — verified on this head:
--id 9.0, --id 0009, --id 9007199254740993 fail with --id needs a positive review id.
--number 09 fails with --number must be a positive integer.
gcb pr review --number 42 --id 9 --jq .body still reaches the broker.
corepack yarn check: 338 pass; CI green on Linux, WSL, macOS and Windows. The lowercase-host change is a pure restatement (options.host?.toLowerCase() ?? 'github.com') and introduces no behavior change.
Two non-blocking notes:
isPositiveSafeInteger is inserted between actionOf's JSDoc and actionOf itself (pr.ts:89-98), so the @param args / @returns comment now documents the helper and actionOf has none. Same shape as the earlier ApiSpec comment — moving the helper above that JSDoc restores it.
The new safe-integer guard is client-only. gcb pr review-by-id 42 9007199254740993 (and gcb gh pr review-by-id …) still reaches the broker, where asNumber (actions.ts:453-456) accepts the decimal string and lets Number() round it. Adding Number.isSafeInteger to that shared validator would make "canonical" mean the same thing on both sides; theoretical for real GitHub ids, so not blocking.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-reviewed f9b6d3a — the JSDoc placement is fixed: isPositiveSafeInteger now sits above the actionOf documentation, and @returns the selected action; --id is applied by the caller as review matches the flow. The stray whitespace in the action test is gone too; behavior is unchanged.
corepack yarn check: 338 pass. CI green on Linux, WSL, macOS and Windows; APPROVED / CLEAN.
Only the non-blocking note from the previous review remains: the client rejects unsafe integer ids for the alias, while the direct gcb pr review-by-id path still reaches asNumber in core, which lacks Number.isSafeInteger (theoretical for real GitHub ids). Approving.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-reviewed 58210c0 — the shared validator now closes the remaining gap.
asNumber in packages/core/src/actions.ts requires Number.isSafeInteger for both the numeric and string paths, so the alias (pr --id), the direct catalog action (pr review-by-id) and gcb gh pr review-by-id all reject unsafe ids rather than letting Number() round them. Verified: 9007199254740993, 9007199254740992 and 0009 are rejected as strings while 42/9 still build api --method GET repos/acme/widget/pulls/42/reviews/9; the new test covers the numeric path.
corepack yarn check: 338 pass. CI green on Linux, WSL, macOS and Windows; no open review threads. Approving.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The guard only rejects a missing --jq value. An explicit --jq '' passes the check, and the empty string is forwarded to gh api. The guard's own message says --jq needs an expression, so the empty value violates that requirement.
Suggested fix
- if (args.has('jq') && args.value('jq') === undefined) {+ if (args.has('jq') && !args.value('jq')) {
fail('--jq needs an expression');

@coderabbitai Fixed in a3788f0: --jq now rejects both a missing value and an empty/whitespace-only expression, with the existing error message. Added a CLI test for --jq .

The added test covers an empty string. This addresses the validation concern. I did not run tests.

Adds the fixed
gh apiaction model and uses it for review-by-id:The action declares a fixed endpoint:
Only the typed positional values are substituted; the caller cannot supply a URL, method or query. It needs only
pull_requests: readand runs through the existingrunGhActionboundary. When
--jqis present, the token is written to the isolated gh config instead ofGH_TOKEN, so a caller expression cannot print it fromenv; the config host key is lowercased.--idonly accepts a canonical safe decimal id, is rejected beside any other action, and--jqis rejected without--idor with an empty expression. No
