You need a paid Apple Developer Program membership ($99/year)

I'm extremely frustrated with Apple's approach to distributing software outside of its ecosystem. I maintain this open-source project and publish compiled binaries for users who simply want to download and run the software. Yet macOS's Gatekeeper can block those binaries because they aren't signed and notarized through Apple. I understand the security rationale behind code signing and notarization, but the only want to "trust me" if I pay them money. If I want my users to have a reasonable experience, I'm expected to pay Apple for the privilege of signing software that I wrote and freely distribute.

I'm not asking Apple to sell, host, review, or endorse my software. I'm asking to distribute software that I wrote and am giving away. Apple is perfectly capable of warning users that software comes from an unidentified developer without making independent distribution unnecessarily difficult unless the developer joins Apple's paid ecosystem. At some point, it stops feeling like a security feature and starts feeling an awful lot like a toll booth placed between an open-source developer and their users. It's a particularly impressive way to make free software more difficult to use.
