fix(coroot): rebuild the node-agent patch on upstream v1.38.1 - #5643
The fix for lost network metrics is already merged, but its image could not be used. It was built with an old compiler, did not name the release it came from, and an audit found open dependency problems.
What
This rebuilds the same fix on the newest upstream release with a current compiler and patched dependencies. Publishing now stops if the built program actually reaches a known vulnerability. The running service does not change: moving it to the new image stays a separate reviewed step, which must watch real agent behaviour because this takes in three upstream minor releases.
The merged retry fix for interrupted network dumps could not be adopted:
the image used Go 1.24.9, named its module by a pseudo-version, and a
binary audit reported unresolved dependency findings.
Move the source pin, runtime image and compiler together to upstream
v1.38.1, bump the dependencies with published fixes inside the patch,
stamp the binary from the release tag, and refuse any advisory the built
binary reaches before publication. The running image does not change.
Part of #5522
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The audit found the binary reaches an advisory in the OTLP log modules.
The fixed release changes an API the cluster-agent library calls, so build
against a small reviewed patch of that library at its exact release commit.

What I checked. The full diff outside the rebased patch; both patches against their exact upstream commits; that both jobs bind the release tag to the source commit and prove the binary's module identity; and the cluster-agent patch line by line (only the attribute constructors move, with the same keys and values).
Exercised. The verify job built and tested the real agent on Linux. Run 41261582785 at an earlier head failed on the new audit step with one reached advisory and skipped publication, which is the negative control. Run 41261908971 at this head passed with none reached. Three earlier runs at this PR's heads failed on real incompatibilities, each fixed here.
Limits, not findings. One module-level advisory remains with no upstream fix; the binary does not reach it. The audit reads the binary, so a later database entry fails only when this workflow next runs. The publish path has not run and the new image has not run on a node: activation is a separate reviewed change, and it must watch agent behaviour across three upstream minor releases. The cluster-agent patch is temporary until upstream moves to the fixed log API.

The hotfix updates the Coroot node-agent base image from v1.35.8 to v1.38.1 and replaces the remediation patch. It adds a cluster-agent OpenTelemetry log API patch. The workflow checks pinned source revisions, tests and builds the patched binaries, audits the verify binary, and gates publication on verification. CI filters and the hotfix contract test now cover the updated patch paths, pins, and build checks.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 14cb2
This change rebuilds the node-agent hotfix on v1.38.1 but does not yet switch the running image. Before the new image is adopted, a provider override would drop discovered instance identity and IP metadata. The vulnerability gate also does not cover the replaced cluster-agent code. The journald alert noise fix may not take effect for missing directories. Resolve the metadata and audit gaps before merging or adopting the image.

…luster agent
sdjournal wraps ENOENT with %w, which os.IsNotExist does not unwrap, so a
missing Talos journal still logged as an error. Publication now also refuses
any advisory listed for the cluster agent module, whose local copy has no
version an advisory range could match.

What I checked. Every change since 14cb231: the regenerated patch (it round-tripped byte for byte before the edit and applies to a fresh v1.38.1 checkout), the advisory-index step, and the contract test. The cluster agent is the only local replacement in the patched module file, so the index check names the only module with this blind spot.
Exercised. Verify run 41266769992 at this head built the real agent, ran the Linux journal test and passed the audit, including the new index check. The journal test fails if the check goes back to os.IsNotExist, proved in a standalone copy. The index check exits non-zero for a listed module and for an index without the standard library. The contract test passes here and failed on the old pin in CI.
Limits, not findings. The new check reads the module's listing in the advisory index, so an advisory that names the cluster agent stops publication even if it would not affect this copy; that is the safe direction. The index is fetched during the run, so an outage there stops publication too. The image has still not run on a node: activation is the separate reviewed change.
