What and why

I use Devsy through Orca Remote VMs, and I want to open the container I'm already working in with VS Code or a JetBrains IDE over SSH. With many VMs and workspaces in use, I find it difficult to identify the workspace to pass to devsy workspace describe. I'd like to get the connection details directly from my current container's SSH terminal instead.

Add devsy container info as a public command intended to run inside the current container. It shows the SSH command, host alias, configured remote user, and current checkout path needed to set up the IDE connection, together with the branch and full commit ID to confirm the checkout.

The public command shares its implementation with devsy internal agent container info and supports the standard Field/Value table and --result-format json. Checkout information follows the current directory, including linked worktrees. Missing values are distinct from setup-read or Git failures, which return errors.

Issue reference: none.

Field Answer
Tool and model Codex, gpt-6.1-sol
Used for Implementation, tests, debugging, code review, and PR drafting
Share of change Mostly generated; manually exercised in a Linux container by the author
  • I read and understand every line of this change and can explain it in review.
  • I ran the code myself; generated regression tests were checked to fail before the fix.

Testing

  • Added or updated Go tests, including real-Git fixtures and both Cobra command entry points.
  • Added Ginkgo integration specs under e2e/tests/.

The integration coverage uses real Git processes and temporary repositories for linked worktrees, detached HEAD, unborn branches, Git-outside behavior, and failures. Built-CLI fixture checks exercise both command entry points, and the author ran the public command in a Linux container. No additional Ginkgo container-lifecycle spec was added because this command only reads existing setup and checkout state.

Commands and results:

  • mise exec -- go test ./cmd/internal/agentcontainer ./cmd -count=1: passed. The new regression test first failed with each of GIT_TRACE, GIT_TRACE2, GIT_TRACE2_EVENT, and GIT_TRACE2_PERF, then passed after the fix.
  • mise run cli:lint:ci: passed.
  • mise run cli:test: failed locally in unchanged packages pkg/agent/delivery, pkg/agent/tunnelserver, pkg/apple, pkg/driver/docker, pkg/driver/external, and pkg/driver/microsandbox. Failures include timeout assertions, runtime detection, snapshot filtering, and an image lookup. The snapshot-filtering failure also reproduces when its test is run alone. These packages are unchanged by this PR.
  • macOS CLI build and built-CLI fixture checks: passed. Both entry points and both output formats succeeded with all four trace variables (16 combinations); inherited object-directory errors and unreadable nested Git metadata remain errors.

Manual verification: I ran devsy container info successfully inside an actual Linux container. This confirms that the command is available through the container's PATH and can read its setup information and current checkout.

Share container info between the public and internal agent command trees,
using agent initialization without requiring host workspace configuration.
Read the selected setup result for the configured remote user, and use the
existing workspace SSH alias. Print only the six requested fields, with
nullable checkout metadata and the existing plain/JSON format selection.

Resolve Git information from cwd, including linked worktrees, detached HEAD
and unborn branches. Validate the nearest Git metadata with Git itself so
unreadable nested repositories cannot silently select a parent checkout.
Classify internal query failures so final CLI rendering retains their causes.

Validated focused tests across five packages, command lint, macOS and Linux
amd64 builds, independent code review, and built-binary fixtures through both
entry points. Live container setup/PATH, host SSH aliases, and IDE connections
remain unverified.

    > - `cmd/workspace/workspace.go`:

Render plain container info with pkg/table's Field/Value table, matching
workspace describe while preserving command output routing and write errors.
Keep the six field values and JSON output unchanged.

Updated both-entrypoint rendering assertions. Focused Go tests and command
lint passed. Built-CLI fixture checks confirmed matching public/internal
tables with the full commit ID retained. Live containers and IDE connections
were outside this presentation-only change.

  - A: Fetched origin and confirmed the existing checkout was clean. Applied develop-repository guidance and kept the change to deterministic presentation within the existing contract. Replaced custom text formatting with the shared table renderer, preserving the Cobra writer and error handling. Updated the existing tests for both entry points. Focused tests for cmd, agentcontainer and pkg/table passed; command lint reported zero issues. Built the CLI and used a temporary setup-reader fixture to verify both entry points produce matching Field/Value tables containing the complete current commit ID. No documentation or dependency changes, live container/IDE testing, or remote writes were needed.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds and registers a container info command. It reports SSH details and, when available, Git checkout root, branch, and commit in JSON or table form. Tests cover command output, setup-result errors, and Git checkout cases.

Changes: Container Info

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e019a

Container info can omit checkout details when launched from a Git-influenced environment. Fix the environment filtering before merging, or accept this bounded reporting risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e019a

The command reports narrowly selected local information without opening an SSH connection or granting new privileges. No introduced privilege escalation or credential disclosure was established. Deployment permissions and unusual configured-user values remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated reporting scope is the invoking process's environment, selected container-local setup file, and filesystem-accessible checkout. No new cross-container lookup, credential acquisition, or service privilege is present in the added path. Actual mounted-data access remains dependent on deployment permissions.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workspace environment check establishes context, not authenticated identity. Setup selection restricts reads to fixed primary or fallback result paths. The generated shell script quotes those paths, while Git receives fixed argument lists. The displayed SSH command is output text, not a subprocess invocation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The command rejects malformed, structurally incomplete, or explicitly failed setup results. These checks do not authenticate setup-file provenance or validate remote-user syntax. The existing producer writes its result before later setup operations, so readable metadata is not proof that every setup phase completed.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the copyable SSH command's destination boundary explicit and define acceptable configured-user representations. Shell quoting and SSH option parsing are separate contracts; this is defense in depth, not a verified command-execution finding.

Match the fatal no-repository diagnostic at a line boundary instead of only
at the start of stderr. Keep the existing exit-code check, metadata validation
and inherited Git trace/environment behavior.

Four real-Git trace regression cases fail before this change and pass after
it. Targeted tests, CI-parity lint, a macOS build and 16 built-CLI combinations
passed. Full race-enabled CLI tests failed in six unchanged packages; the
snapshot-filtering failure also reproduces in isolation. No unrelated source
changes were made. Independent code review passed.

  - A: Implemented line-based matching of the existing fatal no-repository diagnostic while retaining exit-code and metadata validation. Added real-Git regressions for four trace variables; each failed before the fix and passed afterward. Targeted tests, CI-parity lint, macOS build and 16 built-CLI trace/entry/output-format cases passed. Existing Git environment filtering and docstrings were left unchanged. Prepared a template-aligned PR body preserving personal motivation and the exact supplied Linux output, with AI attribution and honest testing/checklist status. The full race-enabled cli:test task failed in six unchanged packages; an isolated snapshot test reproduced its failure. Kept those failures visible and did not broaden the patch. Independent code and document reviews found no actionable issues.

  - A: Received authorization to reply and resolve review threads after implementation. Prepared the accepted trace-fix reply and the explanation for retaining normal Git failure semantics, and verified the reviewed code and PR-output snapshots before committing.
