Additional devcontainer bind mounts were checked against the client filesystem before the selected container engine ran. This rejected valid VM-only and remote sources. Pass each configured mount unchanged to the engine and propagate its rejection, including bounded, redacted stderr in startup error envelopes.

Fixes #1599.

  • Preserve the independent Docker Desktop primary-workspace mount/cache workaround.
  • Add argument-generation regressions, engine-error diagnostics coverage, and a Darwin-only Podman Machine spec for a guest-only readonly file plus a missing-source failure.
  • Clarify client-path debug diagnostics and document Podman guest paths, connection identity, guest UID, permissions, and socket access.
  • Standalone native-label qualification, including redundant parentheses, case variants, and whitespace, fails with native gate BLOCKED if prerequisites are unavailable. Unfiltered, broad, Boolean, and regex selections skip unavailable native-test prerequisites.

Evidence and validation:

  • Source-confirmed cause on current main, starting at 9e73e8a1fc02437678aca4122d60161639290e07; affected implementation matched the handoff baseline.
  • Four mount regressions failed against the original precheck and passed with the fix. Full Docker-driver package tests passed.
  • Five focused Docker Desktop E2E specs passed on Apple Silicon macOS: additional mounts, both workspace-mount cases, CLI mount, and JSON failure envelope. The invalid source reached Docker and its daemon error appeared in the envelope.
  • macOS/Linux development builds and Windows amd64 driver-test cross-compilation passed. Cross-compilation is not native Windows qualification.
  • Native Podman Machine acceptance passed on committed head a604663fc2c04d0daad931f90737a0c75119e2d8: mise run cli:test:e2e:suite "up-provider-podman-machine-bind" ran one targeted spec successfully on macOS 26.6.2 arm64 with Podman client/server 6.1.4, a Linux arm64 rootless engine (guest UID 501), and SELinux enforcing. The VM-only marker was absent on macOS, readable in the workspace, readonly, and preserved through deletion, including its SELinux label. A missing guest source failed through Podman without creation. Workspace/fixture cleanup passed and the original connection default was restored. The test labels only its newly created marker before taking the preservation snapshot; it does not change actual sockets or security policy. The rebuilt host CLI SHA-256 was bef1a4272b21d54914961245bd89685f9cf60222db756e98f07fe8b883efe5a1.
  • CLI lint passed with zero issues, and all applicable pre-commit hooks passed. The updated negative E2E passed with its check that no remaining workspace container is running.
  • Prerequisite and selector checks: focused policy tests, compilation, and vet passed. Actual no-Podman executions skipped unfiltered, broad negative, OR, and AND selections (exit 0); failed standalone native labels with parentheses, case variants, and Unicode whitespace with BLOCKED (exit 1); and excluded the spec for a negated native label. These validate test selection, not VM mounts.
  • An unsigned ARM64 Desktop app was built in an owned scratch directory with the corrected runtime; embedded-runtime SHA-256 was verified. It was not launched or installed. Desktop UI acceptance and the customer's original socket configuration remain unverified; the initial diagnostic artifact used a48296e8d and must be refreshed for final-head packaging evidence.
  • Final PR head a604663fc2c04d0daad931f90737a0c75119e2d8: local lint, applicable pre-commit and commit-message hooks passed; GitHub verified its signature. Exact-head repository CI passed. Greptile completed with confidence 5/5. The subsequent CodeRabbit full-review command returned "Full review finished" with no new findings; no new published review object appeared. All actionable threads were resolved.

Merged by skevetter on 2026-10-21 as 0c85137bf64a013ba2c2a7d479dea308939b6931. Post-merge CI is being observed separately. Desktop UI acceptance and the customer's original socket configuration remain unverified. No hosted macOS nested-virtualization job was added.

📝 Walkthrough

Devsy now forwards bind mount sources to the container engine without client-side existence checks. Docker startup errors include bounded, secret-redacted engine stderr. Tests, Podman machine coverage, and documentation cover remote bind mounts.

Changes: Bind mount handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bind mount argument forwarding
pkg/driver/docker/runargs.go, pkg/driver/docker/runargs_test.go
Mount argument construction no longer validates bind source paths. Tests cover engine-only sources, mount ordering, options, input preservation, and builder propagation.
Startup diagnostics and failure checks
pkg/driver/docker/lifecycle.go, pkg/driver/docker/lifecycle_test.go, pkg/driver/docker/diagnostics.go, e2e/tests/up/up_behaviors.go
Docker startup captures and streams stderr, then adds bounded, secret-redacted diagnostic text to errors when startup fails. Tests check streaming, redaction, exit codes, and output bounds. Failure checks inspect workspace containers and require them to be stopped. Bind-source diagnostics identify client-side Lstat results.
Podman machine validation and guidance
e2e/tests/up/provider_podman_machine_bind_darwin.go, e2e/tests/up/provider_podman_machine_bind_darwin_test.go, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/tutorials/podman-provider-setup.mdx
The Darwin end-to-end test checks rootless Podman machine bind mounts, read-only behavior, missing-source errors, cleanup, and prerequisites. Filter parsing tests cover qualification selection. The setup guide describes remote Podman bind mount troubleshooting.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a6046

Additional bind mounts are now passed to the container engine without checking the client filesystem. Engine rejections appear in startup errors with redacted, size-limited stderr. No merge-blocking issue was found. Native Podman Machine acceptance is still pending and should be completed per the author's plan.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a4829

The change deliberately supports paths that exist only on the selected engine, while preserving configured mount options and engine error propagation. No introduced security defect was established. Risk remains low rather than minimal because native Podman Machine behavior and interrupted cleanup have not been validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Previously rejected configured paths can now expose engine-side files to a workspace when the selected engine permits the mount. Scope follows the configured path, mount options, and engine service authority rather than the client filesystem. An explicitly shared engine socket can extend control to the engine's service account and its managed resources; the documentation warns of this and does not prescribe mounting it by default.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Raw engine stderr already reached the application writer at the comparison base. The head preserves that destination while adding a redacted capture for returned errors. The raw-stream condition therefore predates this PR and is not retained as an introduced or worsened concern on the inspected evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The removed existence check was not an authorization policy: it neither restricted mount roots nor established engine-side identity. The head deliberately delegates source validity to the selected engine while retaining configured mount options and the existing privilege and connection path. This does not establish a new unauthenticated public endpoint.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The native test uses unique guest and local fixture paths, restores DEVSY_HOME, and registers workspace and guest cleanup with fresh bounded contexts. It checks read-only enforcement and unchanged guest metadata after workspace deletion. Cleanup still depends on a surviving test process and reachable machine; forced termination is not covered by those mechanisms.

Explanation

The description explains the problem, fix, issue reference, testing evidence, documentation changes, and known validation gaps. Several template checkboxes and AI-assistance fields remain unselected or incomplete, but the description is substantially complete and directly related to the changes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1599 requires bind mounts to reach the selected engine without client-filesystem rejection. addMountArgs now preserves configured mounts and passes them to the engine. Tests cover engine-only sources, mount order, input preservation, and propagation through runArgsBuilder. Startup errors retain bounded, redacted engine stderr. The Darwin Podman Machine specification covers a guest-only source and a missing-source failure. Native execution remains pending, but the coding implementation and automated coverage are present.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to issue #1599. Diagnostic updates clarify client-path checks. Lifecycle tests cover engine rejection details and redaction. Podman documentation addresses guest paths, connection identity, permissions, and socket access. The preserved Docker Desktop workaround supports the affected engine behavior. Selector tests qualify the new Darwin specification.
