Summary

  • Adds framework.SetEnvForSpec, framework.UnsetEnvForSpec (e2e/framework/env.go), restoring prior state via ginkgo.DeferCleanup.
  • Replaces local env helpers in dockerbuildkit, up-docker-compose, up/sops, and framework/secrets.go.
  • Restore preserves unset vs. set-to-empty.

Why

  • Four copies of save/set/restore logic. Consolidated into one tested helper; local copies deleted.
  • secrets.go keys and values unchanged (DEVSY_SECRETS_BACKEND=file, DEVSY_SECRETS_PASSPHRASE); restore semantics unchanged.
  • Fails-closed SOPS spec now uses explicit cleanup. Outer cleanups already restored state, so behavior is equivalent.

Validation

  • Local: cli:format exit 0; cli:lint:ci 0 issues; go vet ./e2e/... clean; go test ./e2e/framework/... ok.
  • Ginkgo dry-run, baseline vs. final: 503 specs; names, hierarchy, and labels identical. Pre-existing framework/registryfixture [Compilation failure] on darwin/arm64, in both runs.
  • Linux/macOS unit tests and all local checks passed.
  • Linux CLI build failed twice: disk quota exceeded (jobs 118937435623, 118945263748; run 39511894497). Windows cancelled. Affected integration suites did not run.
  • Size: 152 non-test changed lines (85 spec, 67 non-spec); 6 files; weighted 109.5.

CodeRabbit CLI

  • GitHub CodeRabbit status: success, description "Review rate limited" (not completed coverage).
  • CLI quota-blocked after three attempts. Log: /tmp/e2e-final/coderabbit.log.
  • Greptile completed 5/5 on 2242cd716: no findings, zero threads.

Auto-merge

  • Not merging. Ready for human inspection.
  • Blockers: CI infra (disk quota) prevents affected-suite verification; CodeRabbit unavailable.

Next

  • Dedupe dockercontext.go env save/restore and up-docker-compose/config.go (~line 732 COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME) onto SetEnvForSpec.
  • CI rows: up-docker-compose, up-provider-docker (SOPS specs), ci, microsandbox (callers of framework.UseFileSecretsBackend), docker-internal-buildkit (Windows, docker-buildkit-windows.yml).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests

    • Improved end-to-end test isolation by reliably restoring environment variables after each test, including previously unset, empty, and non-empty values.
    • Updated Docker, Compose, and SOPS scenarios to use consistent per-test environment and secrets configuration.
    • Improved error handling when environment setup fails.
  • Refactor

    • Consolidated environment and file-based secrets setup to reduce duplicated test configuration logic.

Replace duplicated env save/set/restore helpers in dockerbuildkit, up-docker-compose, and up/sops specs with framework.SetEnvForSpec/UnsetEnvForSpec. Restore preserves unset vs. set-to-empty via DeferCleanup.

📝 Walkthrough

The E2E framework adds per-spec environment setters that restore the prior variable state during cleanup. Existing secret, Docker, and SOPS specs now use these helpers.

Changes: E2E environment management

Layer / File(s) Summary
Environment setup and restoration
e2e/framework/env.go, e2e/framework/env_test.go
The framework adds helpers to set or unset environment variables and restore their prior state during cleanup. Tests cover unset, empty, and non-empty prior values.
File secrets backend setup
e2e/framework/secrets.go, e2e/tests/up-docker-compose/up_docker_compose.go
UseFileSecretsBackend uses the framework helper to set backend and passphrase variables. Compose secret specs use this shared helper instead of a local setup helper.
Docker and SOPS spec environments
e2e/tests/dockerbuildkit/docker_internal_buildkit.go, e2e/tests/up/sops.go
Docker BuildKit specs use the framework helper for Docker environment variables. SOPS specs use framework helpers to set and unset credentials per spec.

Explanation

The description clearly explains the change, motivation, validation, known CI limitations, and follow-up work. It omits several template sections, including the issue reference, change-type declaration, AI assistance disclosure, checklist confirmations, and the required manual verification format.

Resolution

Update the description to include the missing template sections or explicitly remove sections that do not apply. State the issue reference or write "none", identify the change type, disclose AI assistance and required acknowledgments, confirm applicable checklist items, and provide commands with observed results for manual verification.

Needs human: Linux CLI build failed twice on head 2242cd7 with compiler disk quota exceeded (jobs 118937435623 and 118945263748). The second attempt was a failed-job infrastructure rerun. Affected integration suites consequently could not run; auto-merge is blocked. Local format/lint/vet/framework tests passed, and Linux/macOS unit tests passed. CI repair is outside this e2e-only change. CodeRabbit CLI remains quota-limited. @greptileai review

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Low impact] The code appears safe to merge once the required CI gates pass.

Summary

Shares environment overrides through SetEnvForSpec and UnsetEnvForSpec.

  • E2E specs restore environment settings through one shared helper.

Final gate disposition on 2242cd7: needs human, not merged. Greptile completed 5/5 with no findings; zero review threads; commit signature verified. CodeRabbit CLI and GitHub review are quota-limited (GitHub success status says Review rate limited, not completed review). Linux build exhausted disk quota again on the one infrastructure rerun; CI is terminal failed and affected integration suites did not run. Local format/lint/vet/framework tests and Linux/macOS unit tests passed. Worktree and branch retained for the next cycle; CI repair is outside this e2e-only scope.

Follow-up on head 2242cd716a2285f09df6a98352db020e9ad71967: reran failed GitHub Actions jobs (run 39511894497). Linux Build CLI Binary failed again after Go compilation hit disk quota exceeded; required integration jobs were skipped, so affected e2e suites still have not run on the PR head. Windows binary build completed, but does not unblock the required Linux build or suite coverage. CodeRabbit CLI remains quota-limited, and the GitHub CodeRabbit status still says Review rate limited rather than completed coverage. Greptile remains 5/5 with no findings; review thread list is empty. PR stays ready and unmerged pending CI runner capacity and CodeRabbit review coverage.

Cover cleanup registration for the exported helpers.

env_test.go tests only overrideEnv and calls restore() directly. It does not test SetEnvForSpec or UnsetEnvForSpec, so removing either helper's ginkgo.DeferCleanup(restore) would leave these tests passing. Add an ordered Ginkgo spec that calls each exported helper and checks the prior environment state in the next spec.

Final gate check on 2242cd716a2285f09df6a98352db020e9ad71967: CodeRabbit completed successfully and Greptile is 5/5; there are no unresolved threads. Disposition on CodeRabbit's trivial suggestion: the helper's DeferCleanup registration is a direct Ginkgo call, while overrideEnv unit tests cover the state restoration behavior; adding an ordered cross-spec test is not warranted for this focused deduplication. CodeRabbit CLI remains rate-limited. CI is terminal failed: Linux Go compilation hit runner disk quota exceeded, and affected e2e matrix suites were skipped. Keeping this PR ready and unmerged because affected suites did not run green on the PR head.
