fix(shell): keep spaced command paths intact and explain Windows launch errors - #1643
This PR does not fix the reporter's original fork/exec ...devsy-provider-ssh-windows-amd64.exe: The parameter is incorrect (Windows ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, 87). That could not be reproduced natively and appears specific to the reporter's machine. The issue stays open.
What changed
Space-in-path launch bug (reproduced natively on Windows). Provider commands such as ${SSH_PROVIDER} init expand an unquoted variable in the emulated shell, so a binary path containing a space (e.g. C:\Users\Jane Doe\...) was word-split and failed with exit 127. When a command name is a lone $VAR/${VAR} and, at execution time, the variable holds one existing file, that path is kept together. Any other value (e.g. DOCKER_PATH="sudo docker" or a variable reassigned in the script) keeps normal shell word splitting; arguments are untouched. Provider commands come from external provider.yaml files, so quoting cannot be corrected at generation time and the fix lives in the shared emulated shell, scoped to the command name.
Actionable launch error. The provider command error no longer prints an empty () action, and a Windows ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER start failure now states that it is a local process-launch failure (not a remote host error), that the cause is unconfirmed, and asks for the Windows version and whether the executable runs directly. The wrapped error is preserved (errors. Is works); no environment or argument values are added.
CI: a windows-provider-launch unit step runs the new tests on windows-latest (package unit tests otherwise run only on Linux/macOS).
Green: head 50518eaa8 passes Unit Tests (windows-latest) (windows-provider-launch: shell and launch-error suites) and all other CI checks; Greptile 5/5 and CodeRabbit reviewed this head.
The new Windows test creates a real ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER from CreateProcess (DETACHED_PROCESS|CREATE_NEW_CONSOLE) and checks the hint and error identity.
Not reproduced (windows-latest, throwaway branch since deleted)
Real provider add ssh -o HOST=user@dev-machine with the checksum-verified v1.1.47 Windows exe: starts and runs (only the expected DNS failure).
Truncated, empty, text and HTML .exe give other errors (193/216/1392), not 87.
SSH provider v1.1.44→v1.1.47 audited: yaml command/schema unchanged, v1.1.47 is release-workflow-only over v1.1.46, PE headers equivalent.
Still needed from the reporter
Windows version/edition and build, whether the devsy-provider-ssh-windows-amd64.exe runs when started directly from a terminal in the same directory, and the full devsy provider init ssh --debug output.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed emulated-shell command execution when executable paths contain spaces, while preserving argument handling and resolving relative paths against the shell directory.
Improved Windows process-launch errors with a hint when invalid parameters cause the launch to fail.
Improved command failure messages to include the provider action when available and preserve the underlying cause for error handling.
Tests
Added coverage for executable paths with spaces and Windows process-launch errors.

Walkthrough
The emulated shell now preserves eligible executable paths that contain spaces. Provider launch failures use a shared formatter that adds a Windows-specific hint for ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. Tests and a Windows CI step cover both changes.
Changes: Emulated-shell executable paths
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Command-variable mapping and path restoration pkg/shell/shell.go
RunEmulatedShell maps command positions that use a single $NAME or ${NAME} expansion. The call handler restores a spaced value as one executable path when it identifies an existing file and its split fields match the start of the arguments.
Tests cover spaced executable paths in command variables and shell assignments. They also check relative path resolution and that arguments and other command forms retain their existing splitting behavior.
Both launch paths use providerCommandError. The formatter includes the action when present, wraps the cause, and adds a hint when the platform-specific check matches ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER.
Diagnostic tests and Windows CI pkg/client/clientimplementation/provider_command_error_test.go, pkg/client/clientimplementation/provider_command_error_windows_test.go, hack/ci/suites.yaml
Tests check action formatting, error wrapping, and Windows invalid-parameter diagnostics. The Windows CI step requires and runs the provider-error and executable-path test suites.
The spaced-path handling and provider launch diagnostics have no identified issue requiring a fix before merge.
