Refs #1617. Diagnostics only; this does not close the issue or fix the unverified editor-lifetime hypothesis. The diagnostics-only readiness gates are complete; native Windows lifetime acceptance remains outside this PR.

Scope and review corrections

  • Preserve CLI-to-URI fallback semantics and the public vscode.Open API. A successful URI fallback still returns nil; both failures retain both original error chains through Unwrap / errors.Is / errors.As. Cancellation does not dispatch a URI.
  • Emit executable resolution, extension enumeration/installation, CLI dispatch, and URI fallback diagnostics. Records include IDE flavor, active status.OperationID(ctx) as operation, route, and applicable stage, class, or cli_kind metadata. The existing context flows from launchIDEPhase through the opener unchanged.
  • P1: omit arbitrary editor stdout/stderr, executable paths, argv/folder URIs, and rendered underlying errors from diagnostics and rendered stage errors. Unknown query tokens and private path variants cannot be reliably scrubbed with exact-secret matching. Original errors remain programmatically inspectable, but are not rendered in logs. No broad credential regex was added.
  • P2: tests run inside real status.Run(PhaseLaunchingIDE) contexts and check correlation on every emitted record. Prose-only assertions were removed.
  • Address the reported G204 finding by reusing subprocess.Run, not suppressing the check. The adapter requires an absolute known-flavor executable path and allows only the extension-list/install or remote-folder argv shapes; no shell wrapper. Complete functional stdout for extension enumeration is separate from bounded/redacted diagnostics, so long extension lists are not truncated.
  • Address the five findings from corrected-head review: split argv validators, reuse remoteFolderScheme, apply repository formatter, create the test executable as 0600 then handle-Chmod to 0700, and read it through its trusted os.OpenRoot.

cli_kind classifies filename extension only; it does not prove native Windows .cmd execution. No owner/lifetime redesign, task schema, Desktop lifecycle, or Job Object policy changes.

Final corrected-head validation

Signed SSH-pushed head: 432a00230bfe144be221a2b2797c5b43d653fc37; GitHub signature verified valid. The final evidence ledger is here.

In the granted serial validation slot, GOMAXPROCS=2 / GOFLAGS=-p=1:

  • Focused build and vet for ./pkg/ide/vscode ./pkg/subprocess: pass.
  • Full tests for those packages: pass (vscode 1.362s, subprocess 0.694s).
  • Required mise run cli:lint:ci: pass; config verify reported 0 issues, remaining quiet fetch/patch/new-from-patch stages completed.
  • prek run --files pkg/ide/vscode/open.go pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go: pass, including golangci-lint and golangci-lint-fmt.
  • The package regression TestHostCLIEnumeratesAllExtensionsAndPreservesFolderArgv exercises real non-GUI subprocess dispatch through LookPath/shared runner, full extension enumeration, and space/Unicode folder argv. A temporary real codium shim also verified fallback success/both-fail behavior, privacy, and operation correlation; harness removed.

Acceptance gaps

T0 is NOT RUN: no native Windows AMD64 host or real VSCodium/GUI execution is available. No Windows .cmd execution, Job Object membership/termination, repeated Desktop reopen, SSH transport, rebuild/direct-detached acceptance, or customer configuration proof is claimed. The Job Object hypothesis remains unverified; T2-T5 remain gated on native T0. The issue stays open. Do not mark ready, merge, or release as the lifetime fix.

Arbitrary editor output is deliberately omitted rather than claiming complete redaction. Calls outside an active status context have an empty operation value. Exact-head delta review is requested.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • VS Code launches now try the command-line route first and fall back to the URI handler if that fails and the request is still active.
    • Launch requests are limited to supported editor commands and validated remote-folder addresses.
    • Diagnostic output is bounded and redacted to help avoid exposing private information.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for understanding editor launch diagnostics, correlating logs, and gathering information when an editor fails to connect.

Open now logs the CLI failure (with stage, resolved executable kind and
bounded, home-masked output) before falling back to the URI handler, and
words success as a dispatched request instead of an opened editor.
Host side effects sit behind a hostLauncher so the stages are unit tested
without starting a GUI.

Walkthrough

The VS Code launcher now validates CLI commands, attempts CLI dispatch before URI dispatch, and records staged launch failures. Subprocess execution can stream complete stdout separately from bounded, redacted diagnostic capture. Tests and troubleshooting documentation cover the launch flow and its diagnostics.

Changes: VS Code launch flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Constrain CLI execution and capture stdout
pkg/ide/vscode/open.go, pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go, pkg/subprocess/capture.go, pkg/subprocess/capture_test.go
CLI execution requires an absolute executable path matching a configured CLI name and accepts only supported command arguments. subprocess.Run can stream complete stdout while keeping diagnostic capture bounded and redacted. Tests cover command rejection, output capture, extension enumeration, and folder arguments.
Route launches and report failures
pkg/ide/vscode/open.go, pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/troubleshooting/troubleshooting.mdx
The launcher attempts CLI dispatch, then URI dispatch if the CLI fails and the context remains active. Errors retain their causes while exposing a stage and coarse failure class. Tests cover routing, cancellation, correlation, and log privacy. Troubleshooting documentation describes the diagnostics.

Review-fix head

Signed and SSH-pushed head: f5b4d79fcc3de88e0c4125012ae0c122ec0ae9e9.

Commits since original review head:

  • 9e6a92ef269d5b7e25ce220c13e1891e31fe3cfd - conservative privacy, explicit operation correlation, emitted-log regressions, troubleshooting documentation.
  • f5b4d79fcc3de88e0c4125012ae0c122ec0ae9e9 - remove the new G204 suppression and reuse the existing host subprocess runner with executable/argv validation; keep full functional extension enumeration separate from bounded/redacted diagnostics.

P1: arbitrary stdout/stderr, executable paths, command arguments/folder URIs, and rendered underlying errors are omitted from launch logs and rendered stage errors. Unknown query tokens/private Windows path variants cannot be guaranteed safe by exact-secret matching. Tests cover all CLI failure stages and URI failure; private hosts, Unix/Windows/UNC paths, unknown credentials, and a known secret across the old byte-2048 cutoff (including its partial prefix) are absent from every captured record. Original errors remain reachable through the error chain.

P2: resolution, enumeration/installation, failure, and dispatch records carry flavor and status.OperationID(ctx) from a real status.Run(PhaseLaunchingIDE) context. Tests inspect every record. The public launcher API and its existing caller are unchanged. Exact-prose-only assertions were removed.

The known old-head CI failure was G204 on dynamic exec.CommandContext, reported in run40279991280/job121430969232. That boundary now uses the existing subprocess.Run convention; no new gosec suppression remains. The runner accepts an absolute known-flavor executable and only supported extension or remote-folder argv shapes, without a shell adapter. An optional functional stdout writer preserves all extension enumeration bytes independently of bounded/redacted diagnostic capture. Defaults and existing keyed Options callers are unchanged. Regression exercises SSH/containers extensions before 260 later entries, plus executable/folder paths with spaces/Unicode.

Commands and observed results

Final touched-package checks, serial and resource-limited:

Command Result
gofmt -w pkg/ide/vscode/open.go pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go pkg/subprocess/capture.go pkg/subprocess/capture_test.go PASS
gofmt -l pkg/ide/vscode/open.go pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go pkg/subprocess/capture.go pkg/subprocess/capture_test.go clean
GOMAXPROCS=2 go build -p=1 ./pkg/ide/vscode ./pkg/subprocess PASS
GOMAXPROCS=2 go vet -p=1 ./pkg/ide/vscode ./pkg/subprocess PASS
GOMAXPROCS=2 go test -p=1 ./pkg/ide/vscode ./pkg/subprocess -count=1 -timeout=45s PASS; vscode 0.864s, subprocess 0.722s
`GOMAXPROCS=2 go test -p=1 ./pkg/subprocess ./pkg/ide/vscode -run 'TestRunKeepsFunctionalStdoutIndependentOfDiagnosticLimits TestOpenSuite' -count=1 -timeout=45s`
GOMAXPROCS=2 go test -p=1 ./pkg/ide/vscode -run TestLaunchSmokeTemporary -count=1 -v -timeout=45s PASS on final adapter; temporary harness removed

The smoke used a temporary real codium executable shim and the real LookPath/shared-subprocess execution path with injected non-GUI URI acceptance. CLI exit7 + fallback success returned nil; both failures retained the URI cause. Every emitted record had the active operation ID; private host/path/query canaries were absent. No real editor, GUI, workspace provisioning, or user settings were exercised.

Incomplete checks (NOT passes):

  • Earlier grouped native build/vet/test invocation timed out at 600s after reaching the test phase and printing vscode PASS. Its build/vet steps completed, but no opener/status test pass is claimed from it.
  • Separate opener test invocation shell-timed-out at 120s under saturation; separate grouped vscode/status invocation shell-timed-out at 150s. These resource timeouts are not green evidence.
  • mise run cli:lint:ci first aborted on another golangci-lint process's lock. The isolated-TMPDIR retry was stopped on the coordinator's host-saturation instruction. Required whole-repo lint is DEFERRED pending a serialized validation slot, not green. No new heavy validation jobs were launched after that restriction.
  • Commit hooks were explicitly disabled for both signed review-fix commits to avoid starting host-heavy validation while restricted. Focused checks above were run explicitly; required CI lint remains pending.

Residual acceptance gaps

T0 is NOT RUN. No Windows binary/.cmd execution, real VSCodium or GUI run, Job Object membership/termination, repeated Desktop open, SSH-provider transport, or customer-configuration acceptance is claimed. cli_kind is filename-extension classification only. The Job Object hypothesis remains unverified; no owner/lifetime redesign, worker cleanup, task-schema, or Desktop lifecycle change was made.

Arbitrary editor output is deliberately omitted rather than claiming complete redaction of unknown data. Calls outside an active status context have an empty operation ID. Fresh review and required lint/CI are still pending. Keep this PR draft and #1617 open; do not mark ready, merge, or release this as a lifetime fix.

CI-finding correction and validation update

Corrected-head commit: 432a00230bfe144be221a2b2797c5b43d653fc37 (parent f5b4d79fcc3de88e0c4125012ae0c122ec0ae9e9). Pushed over SSH. GitHub commit API confirms verification.verified=true / reason valid. PR API confirms head is this SHA and PR #1716 remains draft.

The five findings from Lint job121446120014 are corrected without suppressions or weakened checks:

  • validHostCLIArgs complexity: split trusted argv into list, extension install, folder open, and URI validation helpers.
  • repeated remote URI literal: shared remoteFolderScheme now covers validation and URI construction.
  • golines: applied repository formatter to touched Go files and retained edits.
  • G306 fixture executable: create using root-relative OpenRoot.OpenFile at 0600, write, handle Chmod(0700), close.
  • G304 fixture read: use the already-open fixture root's ReadFile("argv").

Commands/results, serially in the granted slot:

  • env GOMAXPROCS=2 GOFLAGS='-p=1' go build ./pkg/ide/vscode ./pkg/subprocess: PASS.
  • env GOMAXPROCS=2 GOFLAGS='-p=1' go vet ./pkg/ide/vscode ./pkg/subprocess: PASS.
  • env GOMAXPROCS=2 GOFLAGS='-p=1' go test ./pkg/ide/vscode ./pkg/subprocess -count=1 -timeout=60s: PASS (vscode 1.362s; subprocess 0.694s).
  • mise run cli:lint:ci under GOMAXPROCS=2, GOFLAGS=-p=1: PASS; golangci-lint config verify reported 0 issues, and the quiet fetch/patch/new-from-patch lint stages completed successfully.
  • prek run --files pkg/ide/vscode/open.go pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go under the same resource limits: PASS. golangci-lint and golangci-lint-fmt passed, along with applicable whitespace, file-size, conflict, and secret hooks. Non-applicable hooks skipped.
  • Touched Go files were formatted with golangci-lint fmt before checks; format hook passed after the fix.
  • The passing TestHostCLIEnumeratesAllExtensionsAndPreservesFolderArgv is a real non-GUI subprocess smoke: temporary executable shim invoked via actual LookPath/shared subprocess runner, tests complete 260+ extension listing, no duplicate extension-install path, and preserves Unicode/space folder argv. Fixture is temporary and root-confined. Earlier explicit real CLI exit-7 fallback/both-failure smoke also passed; its temporary harness was removed.

The old-head failures are not used as pass evidence; these are corrected-head checks. No Windows compiled test, .cmd execution, VSCodium/GUI, native T0 Job Object evidence, repeated Desktop-open, or customer acceptance was run. Owner/lifetime redesign remains absent and gated on T0. Do not mark ready, merge, or release as the lifetime fix. Keep issue #1617 open. Requesting exact-head delta re-review of this correction.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] No blocking code issue was found; this remains a diagnostics-only draft, not an editor-lifetime fix.

Summary

Adds stage-specific diagnostics for VS Code-family launches while keeping CLI-to-URI fallback.

  • Editor launch records now name the route and failed stage.
  • The shared runner can return full stdout without enlarging diagnostics.

Add a Windows-only test that runs a .cmd wrapper through runHostCLI, and add a Windows unit step that selects ./pkg/ide/vscode.

No test on any platform executes a .cmd file through runHostCLI. The only test that runs a host CLI through the real subprocess path, TestHostCLIEnumeratesAllExtensionsAndPreservesFolderArgv, returns early on Windows. runHostCLI passes the resolved path to subprocess.Run with no .cmd-specific branch. A regression in that Windows launch path would not fail the current suite.

The unit tier does not run pkg/ide/vscode on windows-latest. The discovered packages step is limited to linux and darwin. The Windows steps list other packages. A new test in pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go therefore does not run on Windows CI until a Windows unit step selects it:

       args: [-race, -count=1, -timeout=10m]
+
+    - name: ide-vscode-windows
+ description: VS Code host CLI launch with a Windows .cmd wrapper
+      os: [windows]
+      packages: [./pkg/ide/vscode]
+      run: '^TestOpenSuite/TestHostCLILaunchesCmdWrapper$'
+      args: [-race, -count=1, -timeout=5m]

Add a testify suite method named TestHostCLILaunchesCmdWrapper in pkg/ide/vscode/open_test.go. The method should:

  • Write a codium.cmd batch fixture in t.TempDir() that prints the extension list.
  • Call runHostCLI with --list-extensions.
  • Assert the returned extension list.

Skip the method when runtime.GOOS != "windows". The existing guards skip on Windows. The new method needs the inverse condition.

Add a line-count check to the Run-level diagnostic test.

TestRunKeepsFunctionalStdoutIndependentOfDiagnosticLimits states that diagnostic stdout must remain bounded, but it never checks the size of result.Stdout. Its checks cover functional stdout equality, result.Truncated, secret absence, and the *** mask. A change that returned the full redacted stream as Stdout while Truncated stayed true would pass all of them.

The bound is still tested at the Buffer level by TestBoundedBufferRedactsAndCapsLines. The gap is therefore limited to a regression where Run stops returning the bounded buffer output as Stdout. The fixture writes MaxCapturedLines + 22 newlines, so the bound is exercised. Because Stdout is set from out.String(), the same newline bound that holds for the buffer holds for result.Stdout.

Suggested test assertion
 	if !strings.Contains(result.Stdout, "***") {
 		t.Fatal("trailing credential should be masked in diagnostics")
 	}
+	if got := strings.Count(result.Stdout, "\n"); got > MaxCapturedLines {

Final CodeRabbit disposition at 432a002: the completed review reports two trivial coverage suggestions and no blocking findings. Both are documented as no-action for this diagnostics-only PR. Windows .cmd execution and Windows CI registration remain part of #1617 native T0 qualification; adding an assumed-success wrapper test without native evidence would not establish that qualification or justify changing process ownership here. No Windows/.cmd/GUI/lifetime acceptance is claimed. The additional Run-level line-count assertion would duplicate the existing Buffer boundary assertion: capture.go constructs the bounded Buffer, independently tees functional output, and returns that same Buffer.String() in Result.Stdout; capture_test.go TestBoundedBufferRedactsAndCapsLines already checks MaxCapturedLines. The new Run-level test covers the changed functional-output/redaction separation. Source and published SHA remain unchanged. Independent Sol approval and Greptile 5/5 cover this exact SHA. Issue #1617 remains open; this is a launch-diagnostics fix, not the editor-lifetime solution.
