What and why

Refs #1652. Draft: do not merge or mark ready. Keep the issue open until published Desktop artifacts and the required graphical matrix are accepted.

Current source: d485425ea9a6202a0024678511c64fa80cecdc87; GitHub verifies its signature. This fixes Linux desktop identity and Flatpak icon installation, adds owned AppImage launcher management, strengthens emitted-package verification, and documents installation and recovery.

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Docs
  • CI / build / tooling

AI assistance

  • AI tools were used
Field Answer
Tool and model OMP/Paseo agents using OpenAI Sol 6.1 and Luna 6
Used for Implementation, regression tests, documentation, debugging, validation, and independent source review
Share of change AI-authored and AI-reviewed; no measured percentage or human line-by-line attestation

Implemented behavior

  • Consistent sh.devsy.app.desktop desktop identity, packaged BrowserWindow PNG, and explicit Flatpak 32px/128px hicolor icons. DEB/RPM retain Icon=devsy-desktop; Flatpak uses Icon=sh.devsy.app.
  • AppImage-only once-per-profile offer plus Settings Add/Update/Remove. Persistent launchers target the absolute runtime AppImage, not its temporary mount. Invalid paths fail with actionable errors; existing integrations/URI handlers are detected rather than overwritten.
  • Canonical whole-byte launcher ownership, revalidated immediately before mutation. User-edited or foreign launchers remain untouched. Existing modified/shared/foreign icons are preserved without adopting deletion rights; owned launchers can still follow a moved AppImage.
  • Snapshot checks narrow stale observations; they are not filesystem compare-and-swap or an atomic entry-plus-icon transaction.
  • Existing desktop database refresh remains optional; no mimeapps.list takeover. Install/troubleshooting docs explain conflicts, moved files, old pins and direct/unintegrated Wayland limitations.
  • Package verifier checks desktop filename/class/Icon, exact hicolor locations, and complete PNG decoding/dimensions. Release verification explicitly installs cpio before the existing RPM extraction command.

Testing and evidence

Source / scenario Exercised result and scope
Ownership source 69dad22e 54 focused filesystem regressions; actual temporary-filesystem ownership smoke; full Desktop suite 91 files / 1171 tests. Local filesystem and mocked/browser UI evidence is not native Linux acceptance. Ledger.
Two-file follow-up producing d485425e Focused prompt tests 3/3 and Biome passed. supported=true negative control rendered the dialog and failed the negative assertion; restored false before final tests. desktop:check: Svelte 5090 files, 0 errors/warnings; Biome 0 errors / 3 existing provider-test warnings. Full Vitest: 91 files / 1171 tests. Applicable exact-file precommit hooks passed. Ledger.
Exact d485425e CI Pull Request run 40320261400, Desktop run 40320261347, and commit checks passed. The initial third-party-license job failed on a proxy.golang.org HTTP/2 transport error; one targeted rerun passed. This was not a waived license violation. Diagnosis.
Actual four emitted packages from 69dad22e One diagnostic Ubuntu run 40326386493 verified immutable source run/artifact IDs and actual ZIP checksums before extraction. DEB, AppImage and RPM passed the existing Go verifier and desktop-file-validate; real Flatpak bundle import/OSTree checkout/export checks passed. Structural evidence and hashes. This is unchanged package-content scope, not final-d485 app launch or GUI acceptance.

Extraction precision: the diagnostic job executed the verified AppImage runtime only as --appimage-extract. It did not launch Devsy. The archived proof's original phrase "no package executed" was inaccurate; the explicit correction preserves the original artifact and run without silently rewriting evidence or dispatching again.

Earlier failed cross-build/pull/reader attempts remain in the linked ledgers. The native Ubuntu structural run supersedes the earlier macOS RPM-reader and Flatpak-import limitations; those are not current structural blockers. No release/publishing workflow was dispatched.

Independent reviews

  • Fresh independent Sol APPROVE exact d485425: full two-file delta from previously approved ownership source; no findings. Static source review, not reviewer-executed runtime proof.
  • Greptile 5/5 on exact d485425; both earlier ownership findings corrected and resolved.
  • CodeRabbit completed full exact-head review with no actionable code findings. Four earlier minor suggestions have explicit no-action dispositions; current AI disclosure is supplied here. No comments were added merely to satisfy a docstring percentage.

Remaining acceptance gates

Current-d485 Ubuntu 24.04 feasibility has reached actual GNOME Shell 46 / Mutter 46.2, nested Xwayland, nested llvmpipe, and the exact AppImage process/mount/hash, but no Devsy window or screenshot has passed acceptance. Latest run 40341219250 failed with explicit GetWindows AccessDenied; all seven owned processes were cleaned up. A corrected private-session Looking Glass authorization preflight is approved, not yet a successful run. Earlier attempts retain their actual failures: 40334324893 stopped at APT planning; 40336314581 hit stale-index package 404s; 40337225393 returned an empty eligible-window map with incorrect display routing. The earliest feasibility proof incorrectly prepopulated an application-launch scope before that stage ran; it is not launch evidence. Later stage-specific proofs preserve failure and no-window states. No native graphical pass is inferred from GNOME startup, extraction, process existence, or Xvfb.

The full required graphical matrix remains open: Flatpak native Wayland Applications/overview/dock/grouping/reopen; integrated AppImage Wayland; existing-integrator conflict/no-duplicate behavior; direct unintegrated AppImage behavior; X11/XWayland identity and running-window icon; installed DEB/RPM launcher smoke; upgrade from v1.24.0 with old pins. Actual Add/Remove/move/relaunch/deep-link/update interactions and released-artifact delivery are not proved by package extraction or mocked IPC.

Desktop Playwright/native integration acceptance is not claimed. No human line-by-line/run attestation, merge authority, ready transition, release, or issue closure is inferred from automated source approval or green CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Linux AppImage users can add Devsy to their applications from a first-launch prompt or Settings, then update or remove the launcher later.
    • Launcher management reports conflicts and errors, and preserves user-edited launchers and existing or shared icons.
    • Improved desktop identity and icon support across Linux AppImage and Flatpak packages.
  • Documentation
    • Added Linux installation guidance for AppImage launchers and troubleshooting tips for generic application icons.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for launcher management, prompt behavior, settings, and Linux package validation.

Install 32px and 128px hicolor icons in the Flatpak manifest, set
desktopName/syncDesktopName and StartupWMClass to sh.devsy.app, give the
Linux window an explicit icon, and verify desktop entry and icons in the
release workflow before upload.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds Linux AppImage launcher management and controls in the desktop app. It aligns Linux desktop identity and icons across packages, adds release-artifact validation, and documents AppImage launcher setup, updates, and removal.

Changes: Linux desktop integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Desktop identity and packaged icons
desktop/electron-builder.yml, desktop/package.json, desktop/flatpak/*, desktop/src/main/linux-desktop-identity.ts, desktop/src/main/__tests__/linux-desktop-identity.test.ts
Linux package metadata and Flatpak desktop identity and icons are updated. Linux window icon selection uses the packaged or development icon path.
AppImage launcher management
desktop/src/shared/linux-desktop-integration.ts, desktop/src/main/linux-desktop-integration.ts, desktop/src/main/__tests__/linux-desktop-integration.test.ts
The integration reports support and launcher state, installs or removes launchers, and refreshes owned launchers after AppImage moves. It checks launcher and icon ownership before changing files.
Settings and main-process wiring
desktop/src/shared/app-settings.ts, desktop/src/main/app-settings.ts, desktop/src/main/index.ts, desktop/src/main/ipc.ts, desktop/src/main/__tests__/*
Settings persist prompt dismissal. The main process configures desktop integration and the Linux window icon, skips Linux default protocol registration, and exposes integration actions through IPC.
Prompt and Settings controls
desktop/src/renderer/src/App.svelte, desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/components/layout/*, desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/ipc/*, desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/stores/*, desktop/src/renderer/src/pages/SettingsPage.svelte, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/*
The renderer adds an AppImage integration prompt and an Applications section with add, update, and remove actions. Tests cover prompt and store behavior. Documentation describes launcher behavior and icon troubleshooting.
Release artifact validation
.github/workflows/release.yml, hack/release_artifacts/*
The release workflow validates Linux package and Flatpak desktop entries and icons. The verify-linux-desktop command checks desktop identity, theme icon paths and dimensions, and required PNG files.

Explanation

The title "fix(desktop): align Linux icons and integrate AppImage launchers" follows Conventional Commits form and names the two main changes in the changeset: Linux icon/identity alignment (desktop-name, StartupWMClass, Flatpak icons, window icon) and AppImage launcher integration (prompt, LinuxDesktopIntegration, Settings controls). It covers both primary aspects, though the changeset also includes release verification, docs, and tests that the title does not mention, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description is detailed and follows most of the template. It has a 'What and why' section that leads with the context and links the issue (Refs #1652). It has a 'Type of change' section with Bug fix, New feature, Docs, and CI/build/tooling checked. It has an 'AI assistance' section with a filled table and the AI-tools box checked. It includes a testing and evidence section that describes the commands, CI runs, and manual scope. The template's 'Checklist' section is missing. That covers the lint, test, docs, secrets, and CLA items. The description also does not state which Testing checkbox applies (Desktop Playwright e2e under desktop/e2e/, or a justified 'no integration test needed'). The author states that Desktop Playwright/native integration acceptance is not claimed. The 'Fixes #' line is replaced by 'Refs #1652', which the template allows. The 'AI assistance' section says no human line-by-line attestation exists, while the template asks for a checkbox that the author has not ticked. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes, with the missing Checklist and Testing-checkbox items noted for the author to fill in.

Actual CI package-content evidence for final head

Head remains adbd53f18c58a679a48e080c5ab0fe4bf0a7cb4c; no source changes.

Packaging run 40285247165 reports head_sha equal to that exact head and completed successfully. Its actual checkout is merge 3db7c2a3aa3874bc4efaacbc6a011f8686333f8e (adbd53f merged into 6c1ce1b). Separately, the coordinator reports the single cancelled Windows Podman-start recovery completed successfully in run40285247058 on this same head and CI Success is now PASS. That status is not package-content or GNOME proof. Source review remains APPROVE per coordinator; CodeRabbit draft-skip is not a completed review.

Artifact identities

Remote ZIP central directories were inspected using HEAD and small HTTP range requests before downloads. No signed URLs or credentials were logged.

Artifact ID Actual ZIP members
desktop-ubuntu-latest 12634641907 Devsy_linux_amd64.deb; Devsy_linux_x86_64.AppImage; Devsy_linux_x86_64.rpm

Duplicate desktop-flatpak artifact 12634524440 was not downloaded. AppImage and Flatpak members remain metadata-only at this stage.

DEB: actual emitted contents inspected

Member: Devsy_linux_amd64.deb, 182626332 bytes.

SHA256: 3724eb324a6964f20049dde91ef4cb7fbdd9b6099c79b33bb81d1ee093707766.

Downloaded/extracted serially into an isolated temporary directory. Commands:

mkdir deb-root
bsdtar -xOf Devsy_linux_amd64.deb data.tar.xz | bsdtar -xf - -C deb-root

The emitted usr/share/applications/sh.devsy.app.desktop contains:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Devsy
Exec=/opt/Devsy/devsy-desktop %U
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Icon=devsy-desktop
StartupWMClass=sh.devsy.app
MimeType=x-scheme-handler/devsy;
Categories=Development;

The packaged opt/Devsy/resources/app.asar was read using the existing installed @electron/asar disk reader. Its actual package.json contains:

{"name":"devsy-desktop","version":"0.1.0","desktopName":"sh.devsy.app.desktop"}

This proves the field survived this PR package build, not the release workflow's version-rewrite path.

Actual packaged PNG SHA256 Source comparison Native decoded dimensions

Each actual PNG was converted successfully to TIFF using existing macOS sips -s format tiff ... --out ...; the resulting TIFF dimensions were read with sips -g pixelWidth -g pixelHeight. This is full raster decode/conversion evidence, not a claim based on PNG headers alone. The repository Go verifier has not yet been invoked against these emitted files.

RPM: download verified; extraction narrowly blocked

Member: Devsy_linux_x86_64.rpm, 166207530 bytes.

The next serial extraction command:

mkdir rpm-root
bsdtar -xf Devsy_linux_x86_64.rpm -C rpm-root

failed with Unrecognized archive format (exit 1) using system bsdtar/libarchive. The RPM is retained, but its contents are not verified. No tool installation or fallback runtime was started during this I/O slot.

Flatpak: real build/export log evidence, not final-bundle inspection

Job 121456986307 records the actual install commands for the desktop entry and 32/128px PNGs, then explicitly exports:

share/applications/sh.devsy.app.desktop
share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/sh.devsy.app.png
share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/sh.devsy.app.png

App OSTree commit: 0b451dd562460db301f8b5aba04aef58f09e0258fb4087495f93fe1dd53eccdf.

The log executes flatpak build-bundle repo Devsy.flatpak --runtime-repo=https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo --arch=x86_64 sh.devsy.app master and uploads it. Artifact ZIP SHA256: 03342cb7493e39aa1629c0659e077dba3bd5a0a51114e3e1aa458ac92b7470bf.

Neither this PR's Linux package job nor Flatpak job ran the new release.yml verifier/import commands. Successful build/export logs must not be presented as proof those commands ran.

Remaining checks and resource boundary

The granted low-resource I/O slot is released. No package build, image pull, compiler, new VM, system-tool installation, source change, merge, ready transition, or release was performed.

Pending a separately approved bounded CPU/runtime slot:

  • Materialize/reuse the Go verifier binary and run it on actual emitted files.
  • Extract RPM with a capable RPM/cpio tool.
  • Extract AppImage with SquashFS tooling.
  • Import/check out the real Flatpak bundle using flatpak/ostree; run desktop-file-validate.

The full native GNOME matrix, emitted window identity, installed DEB/RPM launcher smoke, and real-profile upgrade remain separate and unverified.

Local evidence root (downloaded DEB/RPM, extracted DEB, identity/content JSON, conversion outputs, RPM failure):

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] No blocking code issue was found at the reviewed head, but the PR should remain draft until its package and native desktop acceptance gates are met.

Summary

The PR aligns Linux desktop names and icons, adds AppImage launcher controls, and checks packaged launchers and PNGs.

  • AppImage users can add and manage a persistent launcher.
  • Linux packages and windows use a matching Devsy desktop identity and icon.

Exact final ownership head and bounded artifact proof

Current source head: 69dad22e2c3274c1107d0ba03c433e1ce49c3378. GitHub commit API reports verified: true, reason: valid; PR API reports that exact headRefOid and isDraft: true. The coordinator reports independent Sol APPROVE for this exact four-file ownership correction. No merge, ready transition or release occurred.

Ownership correction and accurate concurrency scope

  • Generated-launcher ownership requires complete raw-byte equality with the canonical generated payload, not retained ownership/path markers alone. User-edited Exec, Name, custom fields and comments are preserved with an actionable conflict.
  • Mutations reread ownership after status and compare the saved bytes immediately before replacement/unlink.
  • These synchronous snapshot checks narrow stale-observation windows; they are not an OS compare-and-swap guarantee against arbitrary external writers. The launcher and icon are not one filesystem transaction.
  • Launcher ownership is independent of icon ownership. Existing customized/shared/foreign icon bytes are not overwritten when repairing a moved launcher or re-adding it, and are not silently adopted for later deletion.

Accurate inline dispositions:

Corrected-source local proof

  • Touched Biome: PASS.
  • Focused real-filesystem Vitest, --maxWorkers=1: 54/54 PASS. Includes edited launchers, post-status and pre-replacement edits, customized/shared/foreign icons, path repair, re-add and subsequent removal without adopting preserved icons.
  • mise run desktop:check: PASS; Svelte 5090 files, zero errors/warnings; Biome zero errors and three existing provider-test warnings.
  • Full Vitest, one worker: 91 files / 1171 tests PASS.
  • Actual temporary-filesystem ownership smoke: PASS for normal move/removal, edited-launcher preservation, changed-icon path repair/removal, and shared-icon remove/re-add without later deletion. Limit: macOS with an injected Linux environment and executable fixture, not native AppImage/GNOME acceptance. The temporary script was removed after proof.

Actual emitted DEB and AppImage content checks now exercised

A separately granted, bounded artifact CPU/I/O pass used only existing tools. It built only the existing hack/release_artifacts verifier with GOMAXPROCS=1 GOFLAGS=-p=1, then invoked that actual CLI against retained package contents. No whole CLI/Electron/package build, image pull, VM, system-tool installation or source change occurred.

Artifact/source binding remains explicit: these packages came from run40285247165, head_sha=adbd53f18c58a679a48e080c5ab0fe4bf0a7cb4c, actual checkout merge 3db7c2a3aa3874bc4efaacbc6a011f8686333f8e, artifact desktop-ubuntu-latest ID12634641907. Packaging configuration, artwork and Go verifier source are unchanged by69dad. This is evidence for that emitted package snapshot and unchanged packaging contract, not the final69dad T4 binary or native window behavior.

Existing installed asar readers also inspected each actual app.asar/package.json: name=devsy-desktop, version=0.1.0, desktopName=sh.devsy.app.desktop. This proves metadata survived these PR package builds, not the release version-rewrite path.

AppImage was recognized as SquashFS at offset188392 and only seven required members were extracted with existing 7zz -mmt=1. Both root devsy-desktop.png and .DirIcon are links to usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/devsy-desktop.png; the actual verifier fully decoded both linked PNGs too. The embedded entry was observed as Exec=AppRun --no-sandbox %U; this read-only verification did not add/change that command and did not execute the AppImage.

All three PNG byte streams in both packages match the repository assets exactly:

  • 32px: 079a66476c77e5d4916d8c70666bad86c1884422ca0358bec114e44563a716e5
  • 128px: 3844511d48fc5eb4f4b780542631b3841bb1ee70a60a905ab7ba3a2b56bd87b1

This is full-decoder and byte-comparison evidence, not PNG-header-only inference.

RPM archive capability was tried first; narrow blocker retained

The specialized archive reader was used first on the retained RPM root and then on the expected desktop member. Both returned XZ output exceeds its size limit. That is an API expansion limit, not evidence of RPM corruption.

Existing native 7zz -mmt=1 successfully decoded its XZ payload into a517.6MiB file. The specialized reader then rejected that decoded CPIO as Archive is too large to read in memory (517.6MB > 256.0MB limit). System bsdtar cannot recognize the payload; a bounded header inspection shows indexed/stripped CPIO magic 07070X. No raw manual RPM parser was introduced, and no extractor was installed.

Consequently RPM desktop/asar/icon content checks are not claimed. The narrow remaining prerequisite is a reader capable of this indexed RPM payload without the archive API size limit (or an approved Linux RPM extraction runtime).

Remaining gates

  • Fresh69dad CI is coordinator-owned; earlier green CI is not carried forward. Greptile's prior3/5 is not a final-head pass. Coordinator owns fresh Greptile>=4/5 and then CodeRabbit; draft-skip is not review coverage.
  • Flatpak bulk download/import, desktop-file-validate, real native GNOME identity/grouping/icon/deep-link tests, installed-package smoke and real-profile upgrade remain unverified. Existing Flatpak export logs are corroboration only, not release-verifier/import execution.
  • No release workflow was dispatched. No package was executed during these archive/content checks.

Evidence retained at:
/var/folders/_x/n6bxhp5x3_z370726zqg2fnm0000gn/T/devsy1652-ci-artifacts-g7F170

This includes the existing verifier binary, DEB/AppImage/RPM identities, actual member inventories, extracted DEB/AppImage resources, asar metadata, PNG hashes, actual verifier results and the precise RPM archive blockers. The bounded artifact CPU/I/O slot is released; no owned jobs/services remain.

@greptileai review

Please review final head 69dad22. All current-head implementation CI checks are terminal and green. Both earlier P1s have been corrected: complete launcher-byte ownership plus mutation-boundary revalidation, and independent icon ownership preserving customized/shared/foreign icons without blocking owned-launcher repair or adopting future deletion rights. Current-head local focused filesystem tests 54/54, actual temporary-filesystem ownership smoke, desktop check, and full 1171-test suite passed; independent Sol source review approved this exact head. Native Linux/GNOME and remaining real-package verification are still explicitly separate, unverified acceptance gates. Final-head AppImage artifact content check

Packaging run 40297171031 is completed/success, with head 69dad22e2c3274c1107d0ba03c433e1ce49c3378. Linux ZIP artifact desktop-ubuntu-latest is ID 12639935552; AppImage member Devsy_linux_x86_64.AppImage is 221,760,136 bytes, SHA-256 18dcb8362f7b3ff03538138f0e0715c29e3b484a4f6d0dab8613253ad9b2ebaa.

Using existing 7zz -mmt=1, extracted only the desktop entry, ASAR, runtime icon, 32px/128px theme PNGs, root icon and .DirIcon. Existing hack/release_artifacts verifier CLI PASS on the actual final-head AppImage: desktop filename/class/icon, exact required theme placement, and full PNG decoding/dimensions including runtime/root assets. ASAR reports name=devsy-desktop, desktopName=sh.devsy.app.desktop; .DirIcon and root devsy-desktop.png point to the 128px theme icon. Embedded entry contains Exec=AppRun --no-sandbox %U; package was inspected but not executed. @coderabbitai full review

Review exact current head 69dad22. Implementation CI is green; fresh Greptile reviewed this SHA at 5/5 with no blocking source finding, and independent Sol approved the complete ownership correction. Both earlier actionable Greptile threads are resolved with exact-head filesystem evidence. Please review the complete final delta, including canonical launcher-byte ownership, mutation-boundary revalidation, and independent preserved-icon ownership. The PR must remain draft: native Linux/GNOME and remaining real-artifact acceptance are still explicit unverified gates. Prior adbd package evidence is not being presented as final T4/native runtime proof.

Minor · Refresh the owned launcher icon when the bundled icon… · linux-desktop-integration.ts:307-312

desktop/src/main/linux-desktop-integration.ts:307-312
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Refresh the owned launcher icon when the bundled icon changes.

A same-path AppImage upgrade does not refresh the owned icon at ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/sh.devsy.app.png. The launcher keeps showing the previous icon until the icon file is deleted.

On startup, refreshOwned() runs. It calls install() only when needsUpdate is true. scan() sets needsUpdate only when the recorded Exec path differs from the current AppImage path, or when the icon file is missing. An in-place replacement keeps the same path and the icon file still exists, so needsUpdate stays false.

A repair that does run does not copy the new icon. In installLauncher(), when the icon exists, the owned icon is kept if its bytes match the recorded X-Devsy-AppImage-Icon-SHA256. The bundled source is copied only when no icon exists. The bundled source is options.iconSource, which points to the new AppImage's resources/icons/128x128.png. The stale icon therefore persists after any upgrade in which the artwork changes.

This applies only when the bundled artwork differs between releases. The code does not establish that it does. The icon is a repository file, and the Linux package includes it. A future icon change would trigger this behavior.

Consider a fix that compares the bundled icon hash with the recorded hash in both scan() and installLauncher(). Do not implement it without tests for the upgrade case, the customized-icon case, and the shared-icon case.

desktop/src/main/linux-desktop-integration.ts:175-185
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Let Settings remove an owned launcher when the AppImage path is missing.

When the running AppImage is deleted or moved, status() returns installed: false with a problem before it calls scan(). removeLauncher() then throws on that problem. The Settings page renders Remove only when installed is true, so no Remove control appears. The owned launcher stays in the user applications directory and cannot be removed from the app while the process runs from the missing path.

Manual workaround: relaunch from a valid copy of the AppImage, then remove the launcher from Settings. If you must delete the files by hand, remove these two files. They are in different directories:

  • ~/.local/share/applications/sh.devsy.app.desktop
  • ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/sh.devsy.app.png

Use $XDG_DATA_HOME in place of ~/.local/share when that variable is set to an absolute path. The icon is not in the applications directory.

A fix needs more than a guard change. scan() calls realpathSync(appImagePath) at line 280, and that call throws for a missing file. isOwnedLauncher() checks the recorded path from the launcher, not the current AppImage path, so an owned-launcher scan does not need the current path. Keep the conflict checks and the needsUpdate result for a valid current path unchanged.

Minor · Allow = in AppImage paths by quoting the Exec argument. · linux-desktop-integration.ts:489-492

desktop/src/main/linux-desktop-integration.ts:489-492
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Allow = in AppImage paths by quoting the Exec argument.

appImagePathProblem() rejects every path that contains =. The Desktop Entry Exec grammar does not reserve =, and a quoted argument can contain it. A valid AppImage at /home/u/Apps/a=b.AppImage therefore gets a problem. status() then returns installed: false, the first-launch prompt is suppressed, and the Settings "Add to applications" action is disabled.

Quoting = when it appears keeps the generated Exec value valid under the spec and under the stricter reading in the xdg mailing-list proposal. For this path, the Exec value becomes "/home/u/Apps/a=b.AppImage" %U.

Removing only the rejection is not enough. isOwnedLauncher() also rejects a recorded path that contains =. After install succeeds, the launcher it writes would not be recognized as owned. Later updates and removal would then skip it. Once = is quoted, the byte-equality check against renderDesktopEntry() covers this case, so the extra guard can be removed.

🐛 Suggested fix
-const EXEC_RESERVED = /[\s"'\\<>~|&;$*?#()`]/
+// The Desktop Entry Exec grammar does not reserve '=', but quoting it is always valid.
+const EXEC_RESERVED = /[\s"'\\<>~|&;$*?#()`=]/
       CONTROL_CHARS.test(recordedPath) ||
-      recordedPath.includes("=") ||
       !lstatSync(entry.path).isFile()
-  if (path.includes("=")) {
- return "The AppImage path contains '=', which launchers cannot represent. Move the AppImage to a path without '=' and start it again."
-  }
   if (!isFile(path)) return `The AppImage ${path} is not a file.`

Update the tests in desktop/src/main/__tests__/linux-desktop-integration.test.ts:

  • Remove the ["a path containing '='", () => appImage("a=b.AppImage"), "'='"] row from the it.each rejection table (line 131). That row asserts the rejection that this change removes.
  • Add expect(quoteExecArgument("/a=b/c")).toBe('"/a=b/c"'). Import quoteExecArgument if the file does not already import it.
  • Add an install-and-status test for an AppImage at a path containing =. Assert that status().problem is undefined, that install succeeds, and that the written Exec= line is quoted. Assert that a second status() reports the launcher as installed and owned.

Minor · Lost first-launch offer when the renderer reloads… · AppImageIntegrationPrompt.svelte:34-37

desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/components/layout/AppImageIntegrationPrompt.svelte:34-37
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Lost first-launch offer when the renderer reloads during the dismissal write.

Lines 35-36 persist appImageIntegrationPromptDismissed: true before they set open = true. If the renderer reloads or crashes while setAppSettings is pending, the main process can still complete the write. The continuation after the await does not run, so the prompt does not open on that launch. The reloaded renderer reads true, and shouldPromptForIntegration returns false, so the offer does not appear again.

The destroyed guard does not cause this loss. A reload ends the JavaScript context, so the guard never runs.

The loss is narrow. It needs a reload during the IPC round trip. Settings provides an "Add to applications" control as a recovery path.

The current order matches the intent in the comment at lines 17-18: the prompt appears once, even if the window closes without a choice. Recording dismissal only after a user choice would avoid this loss. It would also show the prompt again after a window close without a choice. Decide which behavior is intended, and state that decision in the code.

Make the unsupported-case test wait for the mocked prompt flow before asserting.

The test checks the dialog before the prompt flow can open it, so the dialog assertion cannot fail on a regression. The ipc.dismissed assertion depends on the order of mocked async calls that the test does not wait for. Removing status.supported from shouldPromptForIntegration would still pass this component test. The helper test in linux-desktop-integration.test.ts still catches that predicate regression, so this is a test-quality gap, not a production defect.

Flush the mocked calls before asserting. With the flush, the test also fails if the component ignores supported.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The new RPM extraction pipes rpm2cpio into cpio, but the installation step explicitly adds only desktop-file-utils and rpm; cpio may not be available on the selected Ubuntu runner.

Linux package verification fails after the package-and-publish step, leaving the release workflow incomplete.

This can occur when: The release job runs on an ubuntu-latest image where cpio is neither preinstalled nor installed as a dependency.

CodeRabbit review 5650976089 at 69dad22: the four minor behavior suggestions are explicitly no-action within this change. (1) Existing icon bytes remain conservatively preserved; automatic replacement for hypothetical future artwork changes is not part of this integration. Remove/re-add refreshes an unchanged, exclusively owned icon, while customized/shared icons remain protected. (2) Management requires a valid current runtime AppImage; if the running file was deleted or moved, relaunch a valid copy before Settings Remove. Do not blindly delete a potentially customized/shared icon. (3) The proposed equals-sign relaxation contradicts the current normative Desktop Entry Exec specification: "The name or path of the executable program may not contain the equal sign". Quoting does not override that restriction: https://specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry/latest/exec-variables.html . The actionable rejection remains. (4) Prompt persistence deliberately provides an at-most-once offer, including closing/reloading without a choice; Settings Add remains the recovery path. Changing that to repeat-until-choice would change the selected product behavior. Two bounded followups are being validated separately: explicit cpio installation for the command the release verifier invokes (no claim that current runners lack it), and a deterministic settled-flow assertion for the unsupported prompt case. No ownership, runtime integration, artwork or prompt-policy change is being smuggled into those followups. The PR stays draft; package/native graphical acceptance is still separate and unverified.

Signed follow-up at d485425ea9a6202a0024678511c64fa80cecdc87

This commit contains only the explicitly leased follow-ups: .github/workflows/release.yml now installs cpio alongside desktop-file-utils and rpm, and the unsupported-AppImage prompt test advances the mocked flow with fake timers before asserting the dialog is absent and dismissal was not persisted. No production T4 component, integration module, Go verifier, or artwork changed.

Validation: prek run --files .github/workflows/release.yml desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/components/layout/AppImageIntegrationPrompt.test.ts passed applicable whitespace, EOF, YAML, large-file, merge-conflict, actionlint, Biome format/CI, and secret-scan hooks; shellcheck/shfmt and both Go lint hooks skipped as not applicable. Parent validation on this exact diff: the unsupported-case focused test plus Biome passed; mise run desktop:check passed (Svelte 5090 files, zero errors/warnings; Biome zero errors and three pre-existing provider-test warnings); npx vitest run --maxWorkers=1 passed 91 files / 1171 tests in 90.60s. The supported=true negative control failed by rendering the dialog as expected; it was restored to false before the final tests.

Review disposition: CodeRabbit review 5650976089 raised four minor behavior suggestions, explicitly assessed as no-action for this scope in the disposition: preserve customized/shared icon bytes rather than auto-overwrite, require a valid current AppImage for Settings removal, keep the specification-required = rejection, and retain the selected at-most-once prompt behavior. The two bounded review follow-ups are now complete; no other CodeRabbit suggestion was implemented.

The commit was SSH-pushed to the existing branch. GitHub reports exact head d485425ea9a6202a0024678511c64fa80cecdc87, signature verified (reason: valid), and PR remains draft. Fresh CI is expected from the push; no reviewers were manually triggered. The separate diagnostic artifact workflow remains isolated, uncommitted/unpushed, and undispatched. No merge, ready transition, release, or native GNOME/package-acceptance claim.

The verifier preflight matched run/head/conclusion and artifact IDs/digests, then downloaded the Linux ZIP (desktop-ubuntu-latest, ID 12639935552) and one canonical Flatpak ZIP (Devsy-x86_64.flatpak, ID 12640187992) once each through the authenticated artifact ZIP API. It SHA-256 checked each actual ZIP before unzipping; known DEB/AppImage member hashes also matched before extraction.

PASS: actual AppImage extraction, DEB extraction, RPM rpm2cpio | cpio, all three existing verify-linux-desktop commands with full package PNG decoding/dimensions and exact desktop identity/icon paths; desktop-file-validate on all three. PASS: actual Flatpak OSTree bundle import (app/sh.devsy.app/x86_64/master), checkout, export icon verification/full PNG decode and desktop-file-validate.

Member SHA-256: DEB dd9e5b6780a8fb2264a8a1f53792a7276edbb64906f6396d84a8e592bd743b34; AppImage 18dcb8362f7b3ff03538138f0e0715c29e3b484a4f6d0dab8613253ad9b2ebaa; RPM 504580ed2e03d74da5916966195ca03fb85f8834b50f9b3a0083ea1a97c00ebb; Flatpak ea983221d30d8cb7f1b4aba4e926fedbc4fa436518cb2551645ed04c86b01093. Bounded proof/log/hash artifact devsy-1652-artifact-verification-proof (ID 12651542064, 1,742 bytes) is attached to the run. Its proof.json explicitly binds the package bytes to source head69dad and limits the result to emitted package contents.

This is structural package acceptance only: no package was launched, no AppImage integration UI/profile/deep-link scenario was exercised, no GNOME/Wayland/X11 GUI acceptance occurred, and no release workflow or publication ran. The diagnostic run does not replace the pending final-source review gates for this PR.

Scope wording correction for run40326386493

The verifier invoked the AppImage runtime only with --appimage-extract to unpack its contents. The Devsy application itself was not launched; no GNOME/Wayland/X11 session or GUI was exercised. The earlier uploaded proof.json phrase “no package executed” was imprecise because the extraction runtime did execute. The diagnostic workflow now records the precise scope at signed diagnostic commit 55a46cd192f14f79a6be444ab1c8212a56992281: “verified AppImage runtime used only for extraction, application not launched, no native graphical acceptance implied.” No second dispatch was run; run40326386493 remains the single structural-verification run. The package extraction/import/verifier results and hashes are unchanged.

Current-head CI diagnosis for d485425: Desktop CI and commit checks succeeded. Pull Request run40320261400 failed only Third-party licenses (job121567030264) and its CI Success aggregator. Actual job logs show go run ./hack/licenses --check stopped while downloading github.com/containerd/containerd/v2@v2.3.4 from proxy.golang.org: HTTP/2 stream INTERNAL_ERROR received from peer. Dependency enumeration failed before license-policy evaluation; this is not a demonstrated license violation. No dependency or license configuration changed in the two-file follow-up. One targeted recovery of that failed job and dependent aggregator was requested; no whole-run rerun, gate weakening, or success claim. Final readiness remains pending actual recovery plus fresh exact-head reviews and the separate package/native acceptance matrix.

@greptileai review

Frozen exact head: d485425. All111 current-head check-runs across both pages are now terminal successful or expected skips, and latest external status contexts are successful. The isolated HTTP/2 proxy.golang.org dependency-download failure in Third-party licenses was recovered once via its targeted rerun; the actual license job and CI Success now pass. Desktop CI and signed commit checks pass.

This complete current-head review must not carry69dad coverage automatically. New delta is two files: explicitly declare cpio used by RPM verification, and make the unsupported-AppImage test await the async prompt flow. Parent negative control with supported=true genuinely rendered the dialog and failed; supported=false was restored before focused3/3, desktop:check and full1171test passes. Exact-file non-Go hooks passed. Production ownership behavior, package assets and Go verifier are unchanged from69dad; four minor design constraints are documented in6415240890. Keep the PR draft: real package/native GNOME acceptance is separate, not implied by CI build or source approval.

@coderabbitai full review

Frozen exact head: d485425. Current implementation CI and111 check-runs across both pages pass or are expected conditional skips after one substantiated module-proxy recovery. Fresh Greptile completed this SHA at5/5 with no blocking source issue (6411940857), explicitly retaining draft status pending package/native acceptance. Please complete exact-head full coverage, not a draft-skip or carry-forward from69dad.

The complete new delta declares cpio already invoked by RPM verification and fixes the async negative UI test; production ownership logic/artwork/Go are unchanged. Exact-file hooks, actionlint, focused3/3, desktop:check and all1171 tests passed after a meaningful supported=true negative control failed and was restored. Four minor behavior constraints remain explicitly dispositioned in6415240890; no undocumented CAS/transaction, invalid-path deletion, auto-overwrite, or GNOME acceptance claim. Separate immutable artifact verification is being exercised on an isolated diagnostic branch. Keep product PR draft; no release/readiness inferred from source reviews.
