What and why

Refs #1621. Host agent commands wrapped raw paths in single quotes or used Go %q rather than shell escaping. Apostrophes caused an unmatched-quote error; dollar signs in later commands expanded instead of remaining part of the executable path.

Use the existing shellescape convention at workspace startup, outer/inner tunnel execution, periodic configuration refresh, shared workspace-agent calls, machine SSH and log helpers. No public flags, protocol change, compatibility shim, provider workaround or path sanitization.

Current source: 519c5c978551e49b673097b163bc6afb204d4fea, including the signed race correction d0857e5ad52ada3b79a48aed0e8a83c77f1b8404 and a normal signed merge of validated main prerequisites. Final-head local, CI and independent review gates are complete. Issue #1621 stays open for actual corrected release qualification.

Initial 1c regression and local validation

  • Existing host-path parser failure supplied by the provider qualification owner; preserved without rerunning merely to confirm.
  • New real local-injection/POSIX-executable regression: space path passed before; apostrophe and combined hostile literal paths failed with EOF/unclosed quote before and passed after.
  • New real SSH -> shell -> native executable regressions: inner tunnel and periodic refresh failed before because literal $HOME expanded, then passed with exact argv after the fix.
  • Full affected Go tests passed for pkg/tunnel, pkg/client/clientimplementation, cmd/workspace, cmd/workspace/up, cmd/machine and cmd/internal; affected vet passed. Final tunnel suite passed after rooted fixture refinements.
  • Required cli:lint:ci: PASS, 0 issues. Initial four fixture diagnostics were corrected using a named flag and scoped os.Root I/O/permissions, without suppressions. A later attempt stopped at an SSH GitHub fetch transport failure; one retry passed.
  • Exact eight-file prek: PASS on all applicable hooks, including golangci-lint, formatter, whitespace and secret scan. Non-applicable hooks skipped normally.
  • Provider option documentation now describes AGENT_PATH as a literal path, not shell syntax.

Historical 1c CLI / Docker smoke

Built matching Darwin arm64 CLI and Linux arm64 agent from signed source 1c379a765070858a6912eeecfcbfec87d484c489, using an explicitly engineering-only v0.0.0-1621-hostpath-smoke version. Executed the host CLI itself from a filename containing space, apostrophe, backslash, dollar and Unicode characters, so the local agent path resolved to that hostile literal executable.

Scenario Exercised result
workspace up with bundled Docker provider PASS; actual lifecycle marker created in container
workspace ssh with actual command PASS; marker read and HOST_PATH_SSH_OK printed
Keep SSH command active for 32 seconds PASS; actual periodic refresh started and emitted successful completion, no refresh error
Reopen workspace PASS; same actual container ID retained
workspace delete --force --remove-volumes PASS; final owned-label container inventory empty

Fixture used a cached Linux arm64 image, two CPUs, 4 GiB, network none, isolated HOME/DEVSY_HOME and disabled SSH configuration/IDE/daemon. No image pull, runtime restart, user workspace or production-context modification. First fixture attempt lacked the local provider registration; after registering the bundled manifest, the pre-complete-cutover binary reproduced the startup parse failure in cmd/workspace/up. The complete signed fix then passed the scenarios above.

Binary SHA-256:

  • Host: a8c4900d698b82b789ffe613184c4803122a27308f956997476b2a3561195b91
  • Linux arm64: 3fdc892232e68cd7f47e9583de325de477ae50fbb9edc9ad695580284715e454

Local exact command/output ledger: /tmp/devsy1621-host-smoke/ledger.json and sibling logs. Owned fixture, private home and throwaway binaries were removed after evidence capture.

Integration and delivery boundaries

The broader six-shell/transport literal-path plus real-sudo Ginkgo release qualification is implemented in provider draft #164. It is deliberately not claimed passing against this engineering binary: that gate requires actual published corrected CLI and Desktop candidate artifacts with truthful tag/version/digest/source provenance. Known-broken beta.2 is not rerun or relabelled.

No Desktop GUI, native Windows literal-path shell, real sudo installation, customer-host or released-artifact acceptance is inferred from this local smoke. Final-head CI, independent source review, Greptile 4/5 and completed CodeRabbit review are recorded below. No release, issue closure or feature merge is included.

Current race correction and source integration

  • The old-head CI run 40345784030 remains a failure: Ubuntu/macOS exposed concurrent SSH stdout/stderr writes to a shared bytes.Buffer; the two Windows provider attempts crashed separately. The Windows symptoms are consistent with runtime: windows/amd64 exception recovery can write below a goroutine stack and corrupt the Go heap golang/go#81238, but runner attribution is unproven and no released fixed toolchain was established. No third old-head retry or CI-policy weakening.
  • Commit d0857e5 uses a private synchronized sink with a named buffer field, locking writes and snapshots. It deliberately does not embed bytes.Buffer, whose promoted ReadFrom could bypass Write. Actual tunnel race tests passed (14.736s), affected vet passed, required CLI lint reported zero issues, and all applicable eight-file staged hooks passed (531.02s).
  • Docs installation failed independently with a Fumadocs peer mismatch. Bug PR fix(docs): align Fumadocs peer dependencies #1727 merged as f5a21e3db1bb2b01ab2e2e396d8b4f9b91676780 after strict install, 112-page build, real-browser, CI and source/reviewer gates. Current core head includes it and the unrelated main-only BuildKit test through a normal signed merge, not a rebase or force push. Final integrated-tree required CLI lint passed with zero issues; all applicable configured eight-file hooks passed, and the final tracked tree remained unchanged (357.17s combined). Final-head CI run 40390135885 passed, including the three OS unit suites and Windows provider-update tests. No old-head failure is relabelled as passing.

Race-corrected engineering smoke (not a release pair)

The /tmp/devsy1621-refresh-smoke.7ZTNCw/ledger.json run used the same production source as d0857e5 before committing it; binary VCS metadata therefore predates that commit. The later main merge changes docs dependency files and an unrelated test, not this production path. Do not call these final-commit-built or released artifacts.

  • Host binary SHA256: 18c2705d0ecdb8b5dfafe3f14280f07d86f57a3acfa16cf986d6e25065969427.
  • Linux arm64 SHA256: e878099633f706fe4d403a98b5692d1817dc920bda6d015a67490afdf8e828a8.
  • Actual hostile-literal host filename, fresh private state and explicit matching agent override: workspace up PASS (4.552s), real SSH command across the default refresh interval PASS (33.419s), same-container reopen PASS (2.310s), owned deletion PASS (1.172s). Both running agent executable probes matched the Linux hash; final owned-container inventory was empty. Cached image only; two CPUs, 4GiB, no network.
  • Evidence logs are retained; owned temporary fixture/private home/binaries were removed. This does not satisfy provider docs: add CLAUDE.md repo skill for engineering agents #164's published CLI/Desktop qualification contract. This engineering smoke alone is not release or readiness proof; final source, CI and review gates are recorded below.

Independent current-source review

Sonnet 5.5 independently approved exact 519c5c978551e49b673097b163bc6afb204d4fea after reading the complete eight-file PR delta and relevant callers/dependencies, with the live head verified before and after. No P1/P2 finding. This is source approval only; the reviewer did not run tests or certify CI, released artifacts, or readiness. Non-blocking maintenance/coverage notes were recorded separately; no new forwarding-only tests or unrelated pre-existing buffer-race changes are included. Greptile completed at 4/5 on this exact SHA with no behavioral finding. Its suite-style preference was dispositioned against AGENTS.md:88 and existing standalone tunnel tests, then resolved. CodeRabbit completed a full eight-file review on the same SHA, with reviewed source/coverage metadata and no actionable inline finding.

Final gate outcome at 519c5c9

  • All 111 final-head check runs are terminal: 102 successful, three path-based Desktop jobs skipped, six neutral informational/queue contexts. The skipped jobs are not native Desktop passes.
  • The docs Netlify preview is ready. The independent images-site preview was canceled, not successful; none of its source/configuration is changed by this eight-file PR.
  • All three PR commits are GitHub-verified (valid), authored and committed by Samuel K skevetter@pm.me.
  • CodeRabbit's sole non-blocking nitpick suggests a direct concurrent-writer unit test. The current sink has a named buffer and mutex, and snapshots occur after both SSH copy goroutines drain. The existing real-SSH race regression guards the observed promoted-ReadFrom failure; it does not independently guard a future removal of the write mutex. That coverage suggestion is acknowledged, with no source change or new helper-only length assertion in this patch.
  • Issue [Bug]: ssh provider workspace doesn't start when zsh is the default user shell #1621 stays open. Provider draft docs: add CLAUDE.md repo skill for engineering agents #164 still requires actual corrected published CLI/Desktop artifacts and its full native qualification matrix. No release or issue-closing authorization is inferred.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Paths and arguments containing spaces, apostrophes, or other shell-sensitive characters are now handled reliably when starting agents and connecting to workspaces and containers.
    • Combined output during container configuration updates is captured more consistently.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that AGENT_PATH is treated as a literal path, including when it contains special characters.

Walkthrough

Remote agent commands now use shell escaping for paths and arguments. Tunnel output capture uses synchronized access. Unix-only regression tests cover shell-sensitive paths and arguments, and the provider options documentation describes AGENT_PATH as a literal path.

Changes: Agent command quoting

Layer / File(s) Summary
CLI remote commands
cmd/internal/logs_daemon.go, cmd/machine/ssh.go, cmd/workspace/logs.go, cmd/workspace/up/agent.go
These commands now use shellescape.Quote for agent paths and specified remote arguments.
Client agent commands
pkg/client/clientimplementation/workspace_client.go
The workspace client command builders now shell-escape agent paths and workspace information.
Tunnel commands and validation
pkg/tunnel/container.go, pkg/tunnel/container_host_test.go, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-providers/options.mdx
Tunnel commands now shell-escape agent paths and arguments. Captured output uses a mutex-protected buffer. Tests cover shell-sensitive values, and the documentation describes AGENT_PATH handling.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template well. It covers the problem and the fix in 'What and why', marks the Bug fix and Docs types, and fills in the AI assistance table with the tool, use, and share of change. It also gives a detailed testing record with commands, outcomes, and binary hashes. It omits the 'Fixes #' line in favor of 'Refs #1621', which is acceptable because the issue stays open. The description is very long and includes release-process narrative, CI history, and repeated gate details that a reviewer must sort through. The 'Testing' checklist from the template (e2e test coverage under e2e/tests/ or an explicit 'No integration test needed' reason) is not clearly ticked, and the Checklist section (lint, test, docs, secrets, CLA) is not addressed. These are gaps, but the core content is mostly complete.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 6 functions across 7 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 4/5

[Medium impact] The changes reach common workspace and machine agent workflows.

The source changes look sound, but the new tests should follow the repository's stated testing guidance before merging.

Findings

  1. P2 Tests skip preferred suite structure ▶

Summary

The PR preserves literal host-agent paths across workspace startup, tunnels, shared agent calls, machine SSH, and log commands.

  • Workspace startup and lifecycle commands keep agent paths literal.
  • Container tunnels pass host-agent arguments literally.
  • SSH and log commands preserve literal agent paths.
  • Tunnel refresh output stays synchronized while SSH writes.

No behavioral defect was identified. The new tests should follow the repository's preferred suite structure. This review inspected source; it did not run tests or qualify release artifacts.

pkg/tunnel/container_host_test.go: 1

83-87: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Add a regression test for concurrent writes to containerTunnelOutput.

containerTunnelOutput.Write locks b.mu before it writes to the buffer. updateConfig passes one containerTunnelOutput as both Stdout and Stderr, so concurrent stream writes call Write on the same buffer. No test in pkg/tunnel calls Write concurrently. The refresh fixture in TestContainerTunnelPreservesLiteralHostArguments writes only to $HOST_TUNNEL_RECORD and produces no stdout or stderr. Removing the lock from Write would not fail the current suite.

Add a test in pkg/tunnel/container_test.go that runs several writers concurrently, waits for them, and then checks the total length. Run the package with -race to detect the unsynchronized access.

Concurrent write test
func TestContainerTunnelOutputSynchronizesConcurrentWrites(t *testing.T) {
	const writers = 8
	const writesPerWriter = 200

	output := &containerTunnelOutput{}
	var wg sync.WaitGroup
	for range writers {
		wg.Add(1)
		go func() {
			defer wg.Done()
			for range writesPerWriter {
				_, _ = output.Write([]byte("x"))
			}
		}()
	}
	wg.Wait()

	require.Len(t, output.String(), writers*writesPerWriter)
}

The test reads only after all writers finish, so it covers Write and not the String lock. The current production path calls String after devssh.Run returns, so no concurrent reader exists there. Add a concurrent reader only when an overlapping read path exists.

Final review disposition at 519c5c978551e49b673097b163bc6afb204d4fea: CodeRabbit completed the full eight-file review with no actionable inline finding. Its optional concurrent-writer test suggestion is acknowledged, not treated as a current production defect. The sink uses a named buffer plus a write mutex; production snapshots occur after SSH drains both streams. The existing real-SSH -race regression covers the observed promoted-ReadFrom failure, but not a future removal of that mutex. No helper-only length assertion or source change is added for this non-blocking coverage preference. Greptile 4/5 and its resolved style disposition remain current. Release/customer qualification and issue closure remain separate.
