Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a migration guide for moving existing Espressif-IDE projects to the ESP-IDF VS Code Extension. It explains which project settings may be reused, how to select the ESP-IDF version, target, board, flash method, and port, and how to configure, build, flash, monitor, and debug.
    • The guide also covers custom build paths, troubleshooting, validation, and migration checks. Updated the README to point existing Espressif-IDE users to the guide.

official ESP-IDF VS Code Extension commands Full Clean Project SDK Configuration Editor Monitor Device

💡 Result:

In VS Code, press **F1** (or open **View → Command Palette**) and type `ESP-IDF:`. The official extension lists these commands:

- **ESP-IDF: Full Clean Project** — deletes the project’s build directory.
- **ESP-IDF: SDK Configuration Editor** — opens the project settings UI, equivalent to `idf.py menuconfig`.
- **ESP-IDF: Monitor Device** — runs `idf.py monitor` to communicate with the connected device.
- **ESP-IDF: Build, Flash and Start a Monitor on Your Device** — builds, flashes, then starts the monitor in one command. ([docs.espressif.com](https://docs.espressif.com/projects/vscode-esp-idf-extension/en/latest/commands.html))

These names and descriptions are from Espressif’s current command reference; the combined build/flash/monitor command is separate from **Monitor Device**. ([docs.espressif.com](https://docs.espressif.com/projects/vscode-esp-idf-extension/en/latest/commands.html))

README.md:34-35
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the migration-guide link to the VS Code Extension documentation.

README.md and docs/en/index.rst are Espressif-IDE documentation entry points. This change adds the guide only to the Espressif-IDE repository README. It does not add a link to the separate VS Code Extension documentation, so users entering through that documentation do not gain the requested discovery path from this change.

Add the guide link in the VS Code Extension documentation source. The exact destination is outside this repository.

## Migration workflow

### 1. Open the existing project

Open the existing ESP-IDF project root directly in VS Code.

Do not create a new project or copy the source into a new template.

### 2. Verify ESP-IDF setup

Confirm that VS Code uses the ESP-IDF version expected by the project.

Prefer using the same ESP-IDF version first. Treat any ESP-IDF version upgrade as a separate task after migration is validated.

### 3. Verify target and board

Confirm the ESP-IDF target.

For JTAG users, explicitly select the correct board/device even when `IDF_TARGET` already appears correct. The chip target and OpenOCD board configuration may be initialized separately.

### 4. Verify flash method and port

Check:

- UART or JTAG flash method
- Serial port for UART / Monitor
- Correct board/OpenOCD configuration for JTAG

### 5. Handle build cache only if required

Try the project normally first.

If configuration or Menuconfig fails because the inherited build cache references a different Python executable, ESP-IDF environment, or absolute path, run:

`ESP-IDF: Full Clean`

Then retry configuration.

### 6. Build

Run:

`ESP-IDF: Build your project`

Verify that the existing project configuration still works.

### 7. Menuconfig

Run:

`ESP-IDF: SDK Configuration Editor (Menuconfig)`

Verify that important existing values are preserved.

### 8. Flash and Monitor

Prepare and verify the Flash and Monitor configuration.

Before flashing a connected device, ask the user for confirmation.

After confirmation, run:

`ESP-IDF: Flash your project`

Then run:

`ESP-IDF: Monitor your device`

Verify expected runtime output.

### 9. Debug

If `.vscode/launch.json` is missing and the user needs Debug, run:

`ESP-IDF: Add VS Code Configuration Folder`

Do not create `launch.json` manually unless a custom configuration requires it.

Verify that default Debug works first.

Important: this creates VS Code defaults. It does not automatically convert a custom Eclipse `.launch` configuration.

### 10. Migrate custom Eclipse debug settings

When the original Eclipse workspace is available, inspect:

`<workspace>/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.debug.core/.launches/<project>.launch`

Start from the standard VS Code Debug configuration, then migrate supported custom Eclipse debug settings into the VS Code configuration automatically when the mapping is unambiguous.

Review and preserve, when applicable:

- GDB port
- TCL port
- Telnet port
- `stopAt`
- semihosting
- flash-before-debug behavior
- reset/start behavior
- custom GDB commands
- debug arguments
- custom timeouts

Do not replace explicit custom Eclipse values with VS Code defaults when an equivalent VS Code setting exists.

If a setting has no direct VS Code equivalent, or if multiple conflicting Eclipse values exist:

1. Preserve the original value.
2. Report the conflict or unsupported setting.
3. Explain what could not be migrated automatically.
4. Ask the user before choosing an alternative.

Hmm the agent instructions written like a human GUI tutorial rather than an agent operational guides. For agent, we need 1:1 key mappings for configurations from eclipse to vscode, not click through actions like (ESP-IDF: Build your project, ESP-IDF: Add VS Code Configuration Folder)

Were you able to use this file on the clean system and able to migrate all setttings in one go?

for example, we need to inspect /sdkconfig amd /.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.debug.core/.launches/.launch files like this
and generate .vscode/settings.json for vscode

{
"idf.adapterTargetName": "",
"idf.openOcdConfigs": ["board/<matched_board>.cfg"],
"idf.flashType": "",
"idf.port": "",
"idf.buildPath": "<extracted idfBuildFolderPath or '${workspaceFolder}/build'>"
}

Generate .vscode/launch.json if that doesnt exist.

{
"version": "0.2.0",
"configurations": [
{
"name": "ESP-IDF: Launch",
"type": "espidf",
"request": "launch"
}
]
}

you can keep these sort instructions in the agent file to generate vscode files, by taking a look at the equivalent eclispe configuration files(what are those equivalent files are you need to define..i think you already mentioned it and just that you need to structure it..)

Anyway, I would like you to run in the clean system..see where the gaps and improve it..

Good point. I tested the current AGENTS.md on an existing Espressif-IDE project and it migrated several settings in one pass, including the custom build path, flash method, OpenOCD/debug ports, initial breakpoint, and GDB commands..

I’ll refactor it into an agent-focused Eclipse -> VS Code mapping guide.

@kolipakakondal @d-almazov
thanks for the feedback! I've updated AGENTS.md to make it an operational guide for the AI agent.

The main improvements are:

  • Added explicit Eclipse -> VS Code configuration mappings using sdkconfig, Eclipse workspace .metadata, and .launch files.
  • Added instructions to automatically generate or merge .vscode/settings.json and .vscode/launch.json, including a complete debug configuration example.
  • Improved OpenOCD discovery using the active ESP-IDF environment, EIM configuration, and installed OpenOCD scripts. The agent verifies the board .cfg instead of guessing its name.
  • Added rules to preserve custom build paths, flash methods, OpenOCD ports, and supported GDB commands.
  • Added validation and handling for Eclipse settings without direct VS Code equivalents.
  • Optimized the workflow to avoid unnecessary searches, repeated checks, and user interaction.

Validation:
I tested the updated instructions on Windows 11 and Mac arm64 with ESP-IDF v6.1 , VS Code Extension v2.3.0 , and an ESP32-H2 using built-in USB-JTAG .

The agent completed the migration in a single run without manual configuration fixes.

  • Configuration generation and validation ✅
  • Custom build path and OpenOCD configuration ✅
  • UART / JTAG Flash ✅
  • GDB connection and breakpoint at app_main ✅

Migration time also improved to approximately 2.5 minutes.

Settings without verified equivalents are explicitly reported rather than silently dropped.
image

The updated instructions and generated configurations are now working as expected in the tested environment.
