Summary

  • Adds a temporary pull request workflow that signs .github/signing-input/SignableFile-2.bin with the same Azure Key Vault flow used for the Windows espressif-ide.exe.
  • The signed file is uploaded as the SignableFile-2-signed artifact.

Test plan

  • Confirm the Sign single file workflow runs on this pull request
  • Download the SignableFile-2-signed artifact
  • Close this pull request without merging

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Added a temporary Windows-based automation workflow for signing designated files during pull requests.
    • The workflow validates signing inputs, applies a trusted SHA-256 timestamp, verifies the resulting signature, and uploads the signed artifact.
    • Signing uses securely configured Azure credentials and skips artifact upload if the workflow is cancelled.
    • Missing signing inputs cause the validation and signing process to fail.

📝 Walkthrough

A temporary pull-request workflow signs .github/signing-input/SignableFile-2.bin through Azure Key Vault, verifies the signature with signtool, and uploads the signed artifact.

Changes: Single-file signing workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runner setup and input validation
.github/workflows/sign-single-file.yml
The workflow runs on Windows for pull requests, checks for the signing input, and installs .NET 8 and AzureSignTool.
Signing, verification, and upload
.github/workflows/sign-single-file.yml
The workflow signs the input with Azure Key Vault using SHA-256 and GlobalSign timestamping, verifies the signature, and uploads the signed artifact. Signing and verification fail if the input is missing. The upload step is skipped if the workflow is cancelled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4ba3f

The temporary workflow is unlikely to produce the requested signed artifact as written, and it could upload an unsigned file under the signed name after a failure. Fix both before running it. The workflow is not intended to be merged, which limits the risk.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Upload only after signing and verification succeed.

!cancelled() also permits this step after a failure. If AzureSignTool or signtool fails, the workflow can upload the existing input file as SignableFile-2-signed. Use the default success condition, or specify success(), so a failed signature cannot produce a purported signed artifact. (docs.github.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Include the file inside .github in the artifact upload.

actions/upload-artifact@v7 excludes files inside dot-prefixed directories by default. The specified path is inside .github, so if-no-files-found: error prevents creation of the requested artifact. Add include-hidden-files: true; keep path restricted to this one file. (github.com)
