Summary

  • Resource Content Display: Show resource content/description body on frontend resource view for all resource types (image, video, etc.) when content exists.
  • Bulk Image Upload Note: Added an optional Note / Content textarea in BulkImageModal.vue collapsible under a "More Options" toggle (hidden by default), and persist it to resources and change requests.
  • Disable Subject:
    • Added migration for is_disabled boolean on subjects table.
    • Excluded disabled subjects from public homepage and public sitemap.
    • Aborted 404 for non-admin direct requests to disabled subjects.
    • Added admin toggle in create/edit modal and disabled indicator on subject cards.
  • Leaderboard Timeframe Reset:
    • Adjusted weekly leaderboard window to start Saturday morning at 00:00:00 (Dhaka timezone) immediately after Friday ends.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Administrators can disable subjects and re-enable them. Disabled subjects are hidden from students’ subject lists, while authorized editors can still access them.
    • Bulk image uploads support an optional shared note, which appears on resource pages when available.
    • Contributor and student leaderboards use Dhaka-local week and month boundaries.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Disabled subjects are no longer included in the sitemap.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add subject disablement and visibility rules, support optional shared content in bulk image uploads, and calculate leaderboard date filters using Asia/Dhaka boundaries.

Changes: Disabled subjects

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subject disablement and visibility
database/migrations/*, app/Models/Subject.php, app/Http/Requests/Subject/*, app/Http/Controllers/SubjectController.php, app/Console/Commands/GenerateSitemap.php, resources/js/components/admin/CreateSubjectModal.vue, resources/js/components/admin/SubjectCard.vue, tests/Feature/SubjectManagementTest.php
Subjects now support an is_disabled value. The admin interface can set and display it. Disabled subjects are excluded from subject lists and sitemap entries, and users without edit permission receive a 404 when viewing one.

Bulk-image content

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared content for bulk images
app/Http/Requests/Resource/BulkImageStoreRequest.php, app/Http/Controllers/ResourceController.php, resources/js/components/admin/BulkImageModal.vue, resources/js/pages/Resource.vue, tests/Feature/PublicResourceUploadTest.php
Bulk image uploads accept optional shared content. The controller includes it in resource creation and pending change requests. Resource pages show content for non-note resources. Tests cover both upload paths.

Leaderboard date boundaries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dhaka-based leaderboard filters
app/Http/Controllers/LeaderboardController.php, tests/Feature/LeaderboardTest.php
The controller calculates week and month boundaries in Asia/Dhaka. Student filters use local dates, while contributor filters use UTC datetimes. Tests cover week filtering and a Friday-to-Saturday boundary.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c7543

Disabling a subject hides its main page and home-page listing, but its nested topic pages remain reachable by direct link. The sitemap also continues to list those pages, so the disable feature does not fully hide a subject. Add the same guard to nested pages and filter their sitemap entries before merging. Separately, very large bulk-upload notes can cause uploads to fail.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c7543

Disabling a subject blocks its main page but does not prevent public access to its folders and resources through other URLs. This weakens the new visibility guarantee across disabled subjects. The reviewed changes remain application-scoped, and resource descriptions retain escaped text rendering and existing moderation controls.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The new disabled-subject policy is enforced only by the direct subject reader. Public nested-node and resource-ID readers independently return descendant content without checking the subject state or the edit-subjects exception. Consequently, disabling a subject does not establish the intended non-editor visibility boundary, although these readers were already public before the PR.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — An unauthenticated caller with a valid descendant path or resource identifier can read content associated with a disabled subject. Nested traversal remains scoped to that subject and its parent-child hierarchy, but the same missing state enforcement applies independently across disabled subjects. The observed outcome is application-content disclosure, not administrative privilege or infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained authorization finding is supported by the public nested route dispatching directly to NodeController, bypassing SubjectController's disabled-state gate. NodeController returns children and resources without that check; the independent resource reader likewise returns resource data. Successful homepage filtering and direct-page denial do not mediate these requests. The PR introduces this inconsistent disabled state, while the underlying public readers predate it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Subject mutations remain behind administrative authentication and create/edit permissions. Bulk-image submission requires authentication, checks effective node freeze state, and derives ownership from the authenticated user. Moderation permission selects immediate publication; other users undergo account eligibility and pending-quota checks before pending records are created. Approval and rejection routes separately require moderation permission.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new content field uses the existing bulk database transaction and moderation lifecycle. Rejected payloads retain content until normal pruning, which deletes staged files. File storage remains outside database rollback, and review transitions retain existing concurrency limitations; the inspected comparison does not show these mechanisms changed by the PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define one subject-visibility decision for direct subject, descendant-node, and resource readers, preserving the permission exception and evaluating current authorization independently of cached response data.
  • proposed — Consider an explicit shared-content size budget that accounts for copying one body into as many as 20 records. This is bounded amplification worth constraining, not a verified exhaustion vulnerability; the existing single-resource endpoint also accepts content without an application-level length limit.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude disabled subjects' nodes from the sitemap too.

This filter removes the subject URL, but the separate node query at lines 65-67 still loads its nodes. Lines 71-95 then add their /{subject}/{node} URLs to the sitemap. Filter that query by an enabled subject so sitemap generation excludes the complete disabled-subject path.

Limit bulk-image content to the resource column capacity.

BulkImageStoreRequest accepts any string. The moderator path in storeBulkImages() writes $content to resources.content, which is a nullable text column. Content that exceeds the deployed database's byte capacity can pass validation and fail the transaction. Add a byte-aware maximum that matches resources.content, or widen the column. The change-request path stores content inside a JSON payload, so it is not the smaller direct content column described in the original comment.
