Description

Aggregates consecutive unread profile appreciation notifications into a single in-app notification entry instead of inserting 100 individual notifications.

Changes

  • Updated UserAppreciationNotification with sendTo() to update existing unread notifications in-place and bump created_at to the latest timestamp.
  • Updated notification title formatting:
    • 1 person: "Alice appreciated you!"
    • 2 people: "Bob and 1 other person appreciated you!"
    • 100 people: "Zack and 99 other people appreciated you!"
  • Removed unnecessary email/mail channel code to keep appreciations strictly as lightweight in-app notifications.
  • Integrated UserAppreciationNotification::sendTo() in UserProfileController::toggleAppreciate() and AuthController::completeOnboarding().
  • Added test coverage in UserAppreciationNotificationTest verifying aggregation behavior and reset upon read.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Admins can send announcements by email, in-app notification, or both, with an optional action link and selectable recipient groups.
    • In-app announcements can open in a detail view with their content and optional link.
    • Repeated appreciation, blog reactions, and votes are combined into a single unread notification with an updated count and latest details.
  • Updates
    • Appreciation notifications reset their count when marked read; self-appreciations do not generate alerts.
    • Appreciation, blog reaction, forum answer, and forum status notifications are delivered in-app rather than by email.

📝 Walkthrough

Appreciation, blog reaction, forum vote, and node vote notifications now aggregate repeated activity into unread database notifications. Admin broadcasts support email and in-app delivery. Announcement notifications can display details in a modal.

Changes: Appreciation notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Aggregate unread notifications
app/Notifications/UserAppreciationNotification.php
sendTo ignores self-appreciations. It updates an existing unread notification’s count, title, message, total, and timestamp, or sends a new notification. The notification uses only the database channel, and new notification data starts with a count of one.
Wire callers and verify aggregation
app/Http/Controllers/AuthController.php, app/Http/Controllers/UserProfileController.php, tests/Feature/UserAppreciationNotificationTest.php
Both controllers call sendTo. Tests cover database-only delivery, repeated appreciations, read-state reset, and a 100-appreciation total.

Activity notification aggregation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Aggregate reaction and vote notifications
app/Notifications/BlogReactionNotification.php, app/Notifications/ForumVoteNotification.php, app/Notifications/NodeVoteNotification.php
Blog reaction, forum vote, and node vote notifications skip self-actions and update matching unread notifications, or send new notifications. Notification data includes item identifiers and an initial count.
Connect callers and verify delivery
app/Http/Controllers/BlogController.php, app/Http/Controllers/ForumVoteController.php, app/Http/Controllers/NodeController.php, app/Notifications/ForumAnswerNotification.php, app/Notifications/ForumStatusNotification.php, tests/Feature/BlogNotificationTest.php, tests/Feature/ForumAnswerNotificationTest.php, tests/Feature/ForumNotificationTest.php, tests/Feature/ForumVoteNotificationTest.php, tests/Feature/NodeVoteNotificationTest.php
Controllers use the aggregation methods. Blog tests cover database-only delivery and aggregation; forum answer and status tests expect database-only delivery; vote tests cover aggregation.

Admin broadcasts and announcement display

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure recipients and deliver broadcasts
app/Http/Controllers/Admin/EmailController.php, resources/js/pages/admin/EmailSend.vue, tests/Feature/AdminEmailTest.php
Recipient groups use opt-in status or verification status, according to the selected group. The form and controller support email, in-app delivery, and an optional action URL. Email is queued for unique valid addresses; in-app notifications go to matching users.
Create and display announcement details
app/Notifications/SystemAnnouncementNotification.php, resources/js/components/NotificationDropdown.vue, resources/js/components/navigation/Navigation.tsx
System announcement notifications store a title, snippet, and optional content, image, and URL. The dropdown opens a detail modal for qualifying notifications. Navigation ignores events originating inside buttons.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 203b8

Admin broadcasts can now email users who opted out, and in-app announcements render raw HTML and unchecked links that could run script in recipients' sessions. Notification rollups can also overstate how many people reacted or voted. These should be fixed before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 203b8

Announcements introduce unsafe HTML and link handling inside signed-in users’ sessions, while broader email targeting can include users who opted out. Sender permissions limit access, but a malicious or compromised authorized sender could affect many recipients.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The new announcement path extends send-email authority into recipients’ authenticated application DOM. Sender-controlled HTML is persisted and rendered with v-html, while unrestricted action URLs become clickable links. This creates an active-content injection boundary affecting selected registered users, potentially including administrators. Opening the announcement is required; action URL exploitation additionally requires clicking the link. Actual script execution depends on browser policy and has not been runtime-verified.
  • Medium · security · observed: Platform-generated all, students, and staff recipient lists no longer enforce receive_emails. Those lists feed the same composer, whose email channel defaults to enabled, and dispatch does not recheck consent. This weakens the previous import-time opt-out boundary for bulk email. The subscribers branch remains filtered, and authorized senders could already submit raw addresses at the base; neither prevents the newly broadened import workflow from emailing opted-out users.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A malicious or compromised principal satisfying the administrative broadcast permissions can target matching registered users, up to the full registered population through the all-users import. Recipients encounter content in their own application session; any script execution would inherit that recipient’s browser authority, potentially including administrative authority. Non-user addresses can receive email but cannot receive this database notification.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained unsafe-link finding is supported by the new action_url accepting an arbitrary string, passing through notification storage, and reaching the modal anchor href. The protected sender route is a prerequisite, not an HTTP(S) scheme restriction. This link path did not exist at the PR base.
  • inferred — The deferred HTML candidate has a source-confirmed path from unrestricted broadcast body to full_content, unchanged notification JSON, and v-html. Tag stripping protects only the snippet, not full_content. This newly introduces application-origin HTML rendering for recipients, but deployed CSP and actual active-content execution remain unverified; it is not promoted here to a runtime-verified finding.
  • observed — The retained recipient-policy finding and its test counterpart describe one production regression: opted-out users now enter broader platform recipient imports and can reach email dispatch. Raw-address dispatch already bypassed receive_emails at the base. No evidence establishes that the email preference should also prohibit in-app announcements, so lack of an in-app preference is not treated as a separate violation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Authentication, verification, administrative access, operation-specific permission, and route throttling limit who can initiate broadcasts. Recipient feed isolation prevents direct cross-user record access. Neither changes sender-controlled content before it is rendered for the intended recipient.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The updated recipient test explicitly excludes an opted-out user from subscribers but includes that user in all and students. This encodes the widened targeting policy and can perpetuate drift between the email preference and the shared broadcast recipient list.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the announcement payload as untrusted content: allowlist supported HTML or render plain text, validate action URLs against an explicit scheme policy, and apply a restrictive browser content policy as defense in depth.
  • proposed — Separate audience selection from channel eligibility and enforce the applicable email-consent policy at dispatch. Define any exceptional operational-message authority explicitly rather than inheriting it from an unrestricted shared recipient list.
  • proposed — Consider a durable broadcast identity with idempotent dispatch and targeted revocation so partial delivery or unsafe stored content can be contained without clearing unrelated user notifications.

🌐 Web query:

Laravel 13.15.0 official source Notifiable notifyNow Cache lock block FileStore lock DatabaseStore lock

💡 Result:

For **Laravel Framework `v13.15.0`**, the tagged source establishes:

- **`Notifiable::notifyNow`** is provided by the `RoutesNotifications` trait. It calls the notification dispatcher’s `sendNow($this, $instance, $channels)`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laravel/framework/v13.15.0/src/Illuminate/Notifications/RoutesNotifications.php))
- **`Lock::block($seconds, $callback)`** repeatedly tries to acquire the lock until it succeeds or times out; timeout throws `LockTimeoutException`. If given a callback, it releases the lock in a `finally` block after the callback. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laravel/framework/v13.15.0/src/Illuminate/Cache/Lock.php))
- **`FileStore::lock($name, $seconds, $owner)`** returns a `FileLock`, using the configured lock directory (or the cache directory) and a `file-store-lock:` name prefix. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laravel/framework/v13.15.0/src/Illuminate/Cache/FileStore.php))
- **`DatabaseStore::lock(...)`** returns a `DatabaseLock`, using the configured lock connection or the cache connection, the lock table, and the prefixed lock name. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laravel/framework/v13.15.0/src/Illuminate/Cache/DatabaseStore.php))

These are findings from the **`v13.15.0` source tag**, not an inference from the current `13.x` branch or generated API documentation.

Serialize appreciation rollups per target user.

sendTo() performs an unlocked read-modify-write. Concurrent calls can overwrite each other and persist an incorrect rollup count. When no unread row exists, notify() queues the database insertion, so a lock around the queued call would not prevent duplicate rows. Use a per-target cache lock and call notifyNow() inside that lock.

Opted-out users are imported for bulk email.

Before this change, every import type required receive_emails = true. Now the all, students, and staff types skip that filter. "All Registered Users", "All Students" and "All Staff" therefore load users who unsubscribed into the recipient list. store() then queues BulkAnnouncementMail to each of those addresses. The test at tests/Feature/AdminEmailTest.php Line 67 expects unsub@example.com in this list. The result is marketing-style email to users who opted out, which is a CAN-SPAM/GDPR consent risk.

Two other cases also need fixing:

  • An unknown type value applies no filter and returns every email.

An in-app-only send can report success when it sends nothing.

Assume send_email is false and none of the listed addresses belongs to a registered user. Then $targetUsers is empty, and nothing is sent. The admin still sees "Announcement successfully dispatched." Return an error when the in-app channel is the only channel and no users match.

The rollup counts events, not distinct reactors.

count goes up by one on every sendTo() call. BlogController::toggleReaction() deletes a reaction on the second click and creates a new one on the third click. The third click calls sendTo() again. One user who toggles react → unreact → react produces "Alice and 1 other person loved your blog post", but no second person reacted. Repeated toggling inflates the number without limit. reactor_id also keeps the first reactor's ID, while title names the latest reactor.

ForumVoteNotification::sendTo() and NodeVoteNotification::sendTo() have the same defect. Their controllers treat upvote → remove → upvote as a "first-time upvote", because the vote row is deleted and created again.

Fix: store the IDs of distinct actors in the notification data. Increment only when the actor is new.

Keep rollups synchronous for database notifications.

When an asynchronous queue worker handles BlogReactionNotification, $targetUser->notify(new self(...)) only queues the database insert. A second reaction can therefore find no unread notification and queue a second entry instead of updating the first.

Use synchronous delivery for this database-only rollup. Apply the same correction to ForumVoteNotification and NodeVoteNotification, or write the initial database notification directly from sendTo().

The aggregation test runs with QUEUE_CONNECTION=sync, so it does not cover this queued path.

NodeController::vote() deletes the vote when the same type is sent again. The next upvote counts as $isFirstTimeUpvote and calls sendTo() again. The count and the "N other people" text then grow without a new voter. Store distinct voter IDs in data and increment only for a new voter.

The announcement modal has no Escape close, no focus handling, and no label.

handleKeyDown closes only the dropdown, so Escape does not close this dialog. Focus stays on the closed dropdown item behind the backdrop. The dialog also has no aria-labelledby.

Fix:

  • Close the modal on Escape.
  • Move focus to the Close button when the modal opens.
  • Return focus to the bell when the modal closes.
  • Point aria-labelledby at the <h3>.

Do not render announcement content as raw HTML.

A principal with send email can submit arbitrary body content and enable send_in_app. The controller stores that content unchanged in full_content. The notification API returns the payload unchanged, and the modal inserts it with v-html. A raw payload such as <img src=x onerror=...> can execute when a recipient opens the announcement. The send email permission is separate from the unrestricted admin role.

Sanitize fullContent with a trusted allowlist sanitizer before storing or rendering it. Keep this separate from $body if the email channel requires the original HTML. If formatted HTML is not required, this safe local fallback escapes the content:

Update the announcement content rendering in NotificationDropdown to remove
v-html and display activeAnnouncement.data.full_content or message through Vue’s
escaped text interpolation. Preserve the existing fallback order so announcement
content is rendered as text rather than executable HTML.

type="url" blocks relative paths such as /blogs.

The placeholder offers /blogs as a valid value. The browser checks type="url" fields before the submit event fires, so "Send" is blocked with "Please enter a URL." Use type="text" and validate on the server (see the action_url comment in EmailController.php).

Update the action_url input in the EmailSend form to use a text input with
URL-appropriate inputmode so relative paths such as /blogs can be submitted.
Leave validation to the server as indicated by the action_url handling in
EmailController.
