What this changes

The Homebrew tap update no longer waits on Apple. update-homebrew now runs once create-release succeeds and attach-macos has finished, whatever its result, unless the run was cancelled. Linux checksums always come from the release being published. macOS arrives in one of two complete forms:

Release carries Formula Cask
The Apple silicon tarball and the DMG Rendered for every platform, as before Rendered from the DMG, as before
No macOS assets Linux advances; macOS keeps the version and checksum already in the tap, pinned by a block-level version inside on_macos Left untouched
Only one of the two Job stops before rendering Untouched

The renderer gains a --carry-macos-from <published formula> mode for the second row and refuses any mix of carry mode with macOS checksums.

Why

Apple has held every app notarization for this team "In Progress" since 2026-09-29. The macOS Notary Status workflow lists 12 such submissions, some older than three days. As a result sign-macos failed on v0.6.0 and v0.6.1, and attach-macos was skipped. Because update-homebrew needed attach-macos, the tap was never touched, so Linux Homebrew users are still on 0.5.1 even though the Linux tarballs shipped normally. The renderer's all-or-nothing rule from #285 would have blocked Linux the same way.

The 0.5.0 and 0.5.1 tap updates already carried macOS forward like this. This change restores that behavior as an explicit mode and keeps the guard against a half-published macOS release.

  • Added or updated tests
  • Added or updated docs (README, AGENTS.md, relevant spec, or guide)
  • just verify passes locally (Rust fmt + lint + test)
  • just deny passes (required for dependency or license changes)
  • just ui-test and just ui-build pass (required for crates/hypercolor-ui/)
  • just sdk-lint, just sdk-check, and just sdk-build pass (required for sdk/)
  • just python-verify passes (required for python/)
  • just compat-check passes (required for data/drivers/vendors/*.toml)
  • just docs-build passes (required for docs or README changes)
  • cd docs && zola check passes (required for docs link/content changes)
  • Packaging scripts were syntax-checked (required for scripts/ or packaging/)
  • just e2e-build passes with the normal Servo stack (required for daemon/UI/effect integration changes)
  • just e2e-build-cpu passes when validating the CPU smoke fallback
  • just e2e passes against the Servo stack (required for end-to-end behavior changes; starts daemon/browser)
  • Tested on real hardware, simulator, or e2e harness (describe below)

No Rust, UI, SDK or Python files change. The only docs edit is docs/development/RELEASING.md, which sits outside the Zola site.

  • Workflow tests: the homebrew-formula, macos-release and macos-ci-coverage suites pass 27 of 27 under node --test. One existing macos-release test calls shasum, which this Linux host lacks. That test fails the same way on main, and passes here with a sha256sum shim. The release tests execute the job's real checksum, render and push shell against fake release asset lists. A full release renders formula and cask with the usual commit body. A release with no macOS assets advances Linux, pins macOS, leaves the cask byte-identical, and says so in the commit body. A one-asset release, or a failed download of either macOS asset, stops before rendering. Reinstating the old echo "...=$(fetch ...)" form makes the failed-download test fail.
  • Live tap formula: the renderer reads the tap's current formula as macOS 0.3.2 with checksum fab9e565…, matching what is published. It produced the 0.6.1 formula in chore(hypercolor): update the formula to 0.6.1 on Linux homebrew-tap#4.
  • Workflow lint: actionlint reports no new findings. Its one concurrency.queue complaint also appears on main.

Notes for reviewers

  • The validation gate still holds. The job's !cancelled() is fenced by needs.create-release.result == 'success', so failed validation still cannot publish, and macos-ci-coverage asserts that pairing along with the prerelease guard.
  • Re-runs are safe. A carry-mode attempt uploads the rendered files as an artifact, and a later re-run of sign-macos re-runs this job in the same run, so the upload now sets overwrite: true.
  • macOS itself is still blocked on Apple. Once the queue clears, use "Re-run failed jobs" on the v0.6.1 run. That re-signs from the stored unsigned payload, which is kept for seven days. This job then renders the full formula and the cask again.
  • Known macOS limitation, unchanged here: the formula's macOS service passes --macos-owner homebrew, which the carried 0.3.2 daemon predates (the flag arrived in 0.4.0), so brew services start on macOS fails until a notarized 0.6.x build replaces 0.3.2. The tap has shipped that combination since its 0.5.0 update, and this change leaves the macOS service block as it is.

…build

update-homebrew needed attach-macos to succeed, and the renderer required
every macOS checksum. Apple has held every app notarization since
2026-09-29 In Progress, so sign-macos failed on v0.6.0 and v0.6.1, the
job was skipped, and the tap's Linux formula stayed on 0.5.1 while
nothing about Linux was wrong.

The job now waits for attach-macos to finish rather than succeed. It
keeps always() fenced by create-release so failed validation still
never publishes. Linux checksums are always required. macOS takes one
of two complete forms: the release's own tarball and DMG, which render
the formula and the cask together as before, or no macOS assets at
all, in which case the renderer reads the macOS version and checksum
from the formula already in the tap, pins them with a block-level
version in on_macos, and leaves the cask untouched. A release carrying
only one of the two macOS assets stops the job.

Re-running sign-macos once Apple clears the queue still brings macOS
and the cask up through attach-macos as RELEASING.md describes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Homebrew release workflow now advances the Linux formula when macOS release assets are absent. When both macOS assets are available, it updates the macOS formula stanza and cask. Partial macOS asset sets stop the update.

Changes

Homebrew release publication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Formula carry-forward mode
scripts/homebrew-formula.mjs, scripts/tests/homebrew-formula.test.mjs
The renderer validates and carries forward the published macOS version and checksum while using the current Linux release data. Carry mode writes only the formula. Tests cover valid rendering, invalid metadata, and CLI input rules.
Conditional release workflow
.github/workflows/ci.yml, scripts/tests/macos-ci-coverage.test.mjs, scripts/tests/macos-release.test.mjs, docs/development/RELEASING.md, packaging/homebrew/hypercolor.rb
The workflow checks for both macOS assets after release creation. It updates the formula and cask when both are present, carries forward the macOS stanza and leaves the cask unchanged when neither is present, and fails when only one is present.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3f5f5

The new publication modes preserve paired macOS asset checks, validate carried versions and checksums, and leave the cask unchanged when macOS assets are absent. No introduced security concern was established. Live tap state, credential restrictions, and repository-side protections were not independently verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The sensitive outcome is package distribution through the shared Homebrew tap, affecting consumers of its Hypercolor formula and cask. The configured publisher stages those two package files. The publishing credential's maximum repository or organization authority cannot be determined from this workflow.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The newly consumed tap formula is read as text, not evaluated. Only a validated numeric version and lowercase hexadecimal checksum enter the repository-owned template; published URLs and other Ruby code are not copied. Download URLs remain fixed to the Hypercolor release repository.
  • observed — Publication remains restricted to stable-tag push or manual runs with successful release creation. The job's GitHub token has contents-read permission; tap mutation uses the separate Homebrew credential, whose authentication and target-repository push permission are checked before checkout and publication.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Missing macOS blocks, invalid metadata, multiple macOS checksums, mixed carry/full inputs, and incomplete full-mode options are rejected. These checks prevent malformed carried state from silently becoming published package metadata, although compatibility with the live tap's formatting was not independently verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As separate hardening for the pre-existing publication-order limitation, serialize all tap publishers and reject obsolete release updates before pushing, so delayed runs cannot regress distributed package versions.

Replace the whole stale Homebrew paragraph.

The paragraph still says every run fills the macOS formula stanza and cask from the current release. The workflow carries both forward when no notarized macOS build exists, leaves the cask unchanged, and stops when only one macOS asset is present.

📝 Suggested fix
-The tag lane also updates the Homebrew tap: `update-homebrew` renders

Three gaps in the carry-forward job. The upload step reused one
artifact name per run, so re-running sign-macos after Apple clears the
queue would re-run this job and fail on the name the carry-mode attempt
already uploaded; it now overwrites. The checksum step echoed
$(fetch ...) directly, which discards the download's exit status, so a
failed macOS tarball download fell through to carry mode with an empty
checksum; it now assigns first so the step fails. And the job guarded
with always(), which also fires on cancellation; !cancelled() keeps the
same behaviour for skipped or failed macOS without that.

Tests now pin the prerelease guard, run the push step with a stubbed
git to check the commit body in both modes, and fail a download of
each macOS asset in turn. RELEASING.md drops the older sentence saying
the job needs the macOS checksums.
