Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

The guide documents SSH signing for people and interactive agents, API-based commit creation for apps and workflows, and squash merging. It also states that unsigned commits block merging and that rebase merging is disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~3 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ceb31

Contributors may create a new PR unnecessarily after signing commits for an existing one, duplicating review work and splitting discussion. This is a bounded documentation issue, not a merge blocker.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ceb31

This change adds contributor instructions, not executable controls. No security bypass or increased exposure has been established, but the repository settings underlying the signing and merge guarantees remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The unresolved control question concerns commit acceptance into this repository's default branch. The supplied candidate does not establish downstream compromise, broader authority, or increased exposure caused by this PR.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — No retained Security finding is supplied. The rebase-merge candidate remains deferred because the effective merge setting and ruleset treatment of rebase merging are unavailable; an unsigned-commit acceptance path has not been verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Available verification reports an active signing ruleset, which counters an assumption that signing enforcement is absent. It does not establish the rule's effective scope or rebase setting. The documentation-only diff also does not establish whether external controls changed between base and head.

Confirm the effective allow_rebase_merge setting. The repository exposes an active Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, but allow_rebase_merge remains null and the returned rules contain no details. The guide therefore does not establish that rebase-merge is disabled or blocked.

- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the existing pull request after signing its commits.

For an open pull request, GitHub’s documented remedy is to rewrite and sign the unsigned commits, then force-push the rewritten branch. A new pull request is not required. This instruction creates duplicate review work and separates the fix from the existing discussion. Tell contributors to update the open pull request instead. (docs.github.com)
