Summary

min(100% - var(--some-var), 10px) threw Operation on an invalid type because Less evaluated the Operation before calling min/max, and var() cannot participate in Less math.

Set evalArgs: false on min/max, evaluate each argument lazily, and fall back to emitting the CSS min()/max() call when evaluation fails.

Fixes #3777

Validation

node --input-type=module -e "
import less from './packages/less/lib/less-node/index.js';
const r = await less.render('x{prop:min(100% - var(--v),10px);}',{strictUnits:true});
console.log(r.css);
"

Also extended math-css-vars unit fixtures; existing min(1px,2px) still collapses to 1px.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CSS min() and max() expressions containing CSS variables or other arguments that cannot be evaluated are now preserved in the output instead of being lost.
    • These functions now retain expressions with incompatible argument types as CSS, while other evaluation errors continue to be reported. This improves support for expressions that combine CSS variables with percentages or Less variables.

Evaluating Operation args before min/max caused "Operation on an invalid
type" for calc-like expressions with var(). Evaluate args lazily
(evalArgs: false) and fall back to emitting the CSS min()/max() call
when Less math cannot resolve an argument.

📝 Walkthrough

min and max now evaluate arguments lazily. If minMax finds incompatible argument types, they emit a CSS min() or max() call. Test data covers calls that combine CSS variables with percentages and numeric values.

Changes: CSS min/max with variables

min and max evaluate arguments individually and retry Operation errors with math disabled. When minMax finds incompatible types, the functions emit a CSS function call using the evaluated arguments. The test input and expected CSS cover calls that combine CSS variables with percentages and numeric values.

Using a Less variable that contains a CSS variable as a min() or max() argument can still fail with a recursive-definition error. A failed retry can also leave stale parenthesis state that changes later division output. Both issues should be fixed before merging.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/less/lib/less/functions/number.js: Added minMaxLazy, which evaluates arguments in sequence and falls back to rendering the original arguments as a CSS function if any evaluation fails. It also falls back to that CSS function if minMax throws; otherwise it returns the computed result.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/less/lib/less/functions/number.js: Replaced the inline min and max wrappers, which swallowed errors and returned undefined, with functions that pass context and defer argument evaluation through evalArgs = false. Both use minMaxLazy and are exported under the same object properties.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/test-data/tests-unit/math-css-vars/math-css-vars.css: Added .min-max-css-vars with min() and max() declarations using CSS variables in percentage-subtraction expressions and a 10px bound.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/test-data/tests-unit/math-css-vars/math-css-vars.less: Adds a comment and .min-max-css-vars declarations covering min() and max() with percentage-minus-var() arguments and a 10px second argument.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3777 requires that min() and max() with calc-like arguments containing var() do not throw, and that the arguments are kept as CSS. The reviewed head meets this. In packages/less/lib/less/functions/number.js, min and max set evalArgs = false and call minMaxLazy. minMaxLazy evaluates each argument separately. If an argument raises an Operation error, it is evaluated again with context.mathOn set to false, and the previous value is restored in a finally block. Other errors are rethrown. If minMax then raises incompatible types, the function emits a CSS min() or max() call from the evaluated arguments. Traced cases: min(100% - var(--some-var), 10px) falls back to CSS output because the Operation is not a Dimension. min(@limit + 5px, var(--x)) keeps the evaluated 15px and the var() call. Numeric cases such as min(1px, 2px) still reduce through minMax. The fixture packages/test-data/tests-unit/math-css-vars/math-css-vars.less adds a .min-max-css-vars block for min and max with var() arguments. The expected .css fixture was not read, so its exact output is not verified.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes address issue #3777. The number.js change implements the lazy evaluation and CSS fallback that the issue requests. Non-Argument errors are rethrown, so the change does not hide unrelated failures. The fixture change adds only the .min-max-css-vars block, which covers min() and max() with var() arguments. The existing trig fixtures in the same file are not part of this change, based on the reported +8 line count for the .less file. No unrelated files or product behavior were identified. The whole-PR diff could not be read because changed blobs were missing from the checkout, so the file scope relies on the supplied summary.

[Medium risk] Changes how the Less compiler evaluates min and max functions.

The PR should not merge until fallback preserves resolved values and continues to report genuine Less errors.

Summary

The PR changes min() and max() to evaluate arguments inside the built-ins and defer CSS-variable expressions to the browser, with matching fixture expectations.

  • The fallback can discard resolved Less values and suppress unrelated evaluation errors.

P1 Fallback loses resolved values When a CSS var() forces fallback, this line serializes the original arguments instead of their evaluated values. For @a: 5px; x { width: min(@a, var(--x)); }, the raw @a node emits no CSS value, producing min(, var(--x)) instead of min(5px, var(--x)). Already-computed arithmetic is lost in the same way. The fallback at line 72 has this problem too.

P1 Undefined variables become CSS For x { width: min(@missing, 10px); }, evaluating @missing throws an undefined-variable error. This catch suppresses it and emits the malformed value min(, 10px) instead. Previously, argument evaluation stopped compilation with an error; fallback should be limited to expressions that CSS can resolve.

Render resolved Less values in the CSS fallback.

If a defined Less variable appears in any argument, this branch renders the original Variable node rather than its value. For example, @limit: 10px; a: min(100% - var(--x), @limit); reaches the fallback and emits an empty second argument instead of 10px. The same operation occurs at Line 79. Preserve arguments that could not participate in Less math, but resolve Less variables and other evaluable constructs before rendering either fallback. Variable resolves its value during eval; its inherited genCSS instead writes the node’s unset value. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Restore context.parensStack before retrying evaluation.

When the first evaluation fails inside a parenthesized expression, Expression.eval can leave an entry in context.parensStack. The retry removes only its own entry. A later unparenthesized 10px / 2 can then evaluate as 5px under parens-division.

Clear the variable evaluation flag when evaluation throws.

When a variable's value throws during evaluation, Variable.eval leaves this.evaluating set to true. The flag resets only on the success path. The retry in minMaxLazy then evaluates the same Variable node and fails with "Recursive variable definition". For example, @size: 100% - var(--x); a: min(@size, 10px); still fails, even though the inline form min(100% - var(--x), 10px) takes the retry path.

Reset the flag in a finally block. The recursion check still works during nested evaluation because the flag remains set while the value is evaluated.

CSS min and max function calls that hold CSS variables fail with "Operation on an invalid type"
