Mandate cuprum beta2 in scripting standards (#216) - #241
This branch mandates cuprum v0.2.0-beta2 (cuprum==0.2.0b2) for new and updated scripts and replaces stale command patterns with examples aligned to the tagged users' guide. It corrects execution settings, result handling, and testing guidance so copied examples follow the required release's API.
Closes#216. The observer now filters ExecEvent.phase before reading exit_code; the broader standards update targets beta2 rather than retaining the issue's original 0.1.0 reference.
The following gates passed sequentially for published head e75762fa679b3970d03e9a91979005d09e4cba50, based on origin/main at 9b99027bd9c9de3a85792d271326efb6c9db347f. Local validation ran in a network-isolated worker without host mounts.
make check-fmt PASS (161 files unchanged)
make markdownlint PASS (0 errors)
make lint PASS
make typecheck PASS (syntax check; no static type checker configured)
make test PASS (1,037 passed, 8 skipped; 22 snapshots)
make spelling PASS (no generated configuration diff)
git diff --check PASS
The tests load all 21 executable examples directly from the published Markdown (20 Python and one YAML), exercise the beta2 examples, and assert the tested-example contract across the daisyUI, Femtologging, and scripting-standards documents (93, 14, and 21 examples). Generated concurrency cases check result order, failure mapping, fail-fast compaction, and concurrency limits. The rebase onto origin/main completed without conflicts; git range-diff confirmed that the three feature commits replayed unchanged. The hosted CI run 40382123136 passed for this head; every step in the Makefile gates job succeeded.

Filter observer events by event.phase == "exit" before logging event.exit_code. This addresses linked issue #216.
Add tests that execute the published scripting examples and check their tested-example markers. Extend the contract to all three documented guides.
The PR description reports that make test passed with 1,034 tests passed, 9 skipped and 22 snapshots. It also reports that the final-head hosted Makefile gate passed.
Walkthrough
The scripting standards and developer guidance now describe Cuprum v0.2.0-beta2. The PR updates examples and migration notes, pins the development dependency, and adds tests for the published examples and their contract.
Changes
Cuprum scripting standards
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Catalogue and execution API guidance documentation-library/scripting-standards.md, docs/developers-guide.md, pyproject.toml
Documents the updated catalogue, execution context, command and pipeline results, concurrency, cancellation, and observability APIs. The developer guide states the Cuprum pin and prohibits plumbum and direct subprocess calls. pyproject.toml pins cuprum==0.2.0b2.
Reference examples and migration guidance documentation-library/scripting-standards.md, tests/test_rust_entrypoints.py
Updates reference and cmd-mox examples to use catalogue scoping and ExecutionContext. Migration guidance distinguishes non-zero command results from exceptions that prevent completion. The Rust entrypoint test now scopes with the full catalogue.
Example test coverage and contract tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py, tests/test_tested_example_contract.py, docs/developers-guide.md
Adds syntax, YAML, and execution tests for the published examples. Extends the tested-example contract to include the scripting standards’ 21 examples.
The remaining test-harness changes are bounded and do not show a broken scripting example. They can be addressed before merge or accepted as follow-up.

Accept issue #216. The observer example handles ExecEvent lifecycle events, filters for event.phase == "exit", and logs event.exit_code. The committed observer test runs the registered command and checks the completion log without callback errors. The PR also reports passing the required formatting, lint, and spelling checks. The beta2 update provides the current API target for the example.

Explanation
Keep the changes within the stated PR scope. The standards, developer guide, dependency pin, migration examples, run_bash update, and committed example tests support the beta2 mandate and the issue #216 API correction. The changes do not modify the separate Peregrine import PR or unrelated production behaviour.

Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
Pass. The prior testing gap is addressed. tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py:20-27 loads the shipped Markdown directly. It compiles all Python examples, validates the YAML example, and uses cmd-mox with output and result assertions for catalogue resolution, successful and non-zero results, missing executables, execution context, argv construction, pipelines, concurrency, and the cmd-mox examples (:78-313). The observer test runs the registered command through sh.observe() and requires one Completed with exit code 0 record (:268-284); the changed example filters ExecEvent.phase before reading event.exit_code (documentation-library/scripting-standards.md:373-398). The contract test enforces all 21 shipped examples and the expected 20-Python/1-YAML split (tests/test_tested_example_contract.py:82-95). The assertions require command execution and meaningful outputs, so bypassed or no-op examples do not pass. Prior failure addressed: Added committed source-extracted tests for the published standards, including real observer execution, non-zero and spawn failures, catalogue/context, pipeline, concurrency, and cmd-mox behaviour; the contract now enforces all 21 examples.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
PASS — The check does not apply to this change. The reviewed range changes the developer-facing scripting standards, developer guide, dependency pin, and tests; it does not add or change end-user functionality or runtime behaviour. docs/users-guide.md states that it is for people using the scripts, not people changing them (lines 3–5), and its documentation-library section identifies scripting standards as shared guidance (lines 306–323). The new Cuprum mandate is documented in docs/developers-guide.md (lines 1640–1645) and in documentation-library/scripting-standards.md (lines 152–159), which matches the intended developer audience.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
The previous documentation gap is resolved. The PR adds a Scripting standards section to docs/developers-guide.md (lines 1639-1646). It defines the scope, links the canonical standards and tagged Cuprum guide, requires cuprum==0.2.0b2 in PEP 723 metadata or project dependencies, and prohibits Plumbum and direct subprocess calls. The dependency pin in pyproject.toml and uv.lock is therefore documented. No separate architecture change is introduced. Prior failure addressed: docs/developers-guide.md:1639-1646 now records the Cuprum beta2 mandate, scope, dependency locations, links, and Plumbum/direct subprocess prohibition.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
The standing failure is resolved. The pull request adds tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py, which loads code directly from documentation-library/scripting-standards.md and exercises the command boundary through cmd-mox. Tests cover registered-command execution, captured output, non-zero results, missing-executable exceptions, ExecutionContext cwd/environment/stdin propagation, argument vectors, pipelines, bounded concurrency, and observer filtering with exit-code logging. The observer test runs a registered cargo command and asserts one completion log with exit code 0. tests/test_tested_example_contract.py checks all 21 marked scripting examples and the exact 20-Python/1-YAML language count. The changed Markdown marks each executable fence with a unique tested-example identifier. These are committed behavioural tests, not only tests of private helpers or mocks. Prior failure addressed: Added committed source-extracted and cmd-mox boundary tests in tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py, including observer, result, exception, catalogue, context and argument cases. Marked all 21 executable fences and enforced the contract in tests/test_tested_example_contract.py.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
PASS. The PR adds text and structured examples, but it tests them with focused semantic assertions rather than broad snapshots. tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py checks YAML mappings, command arguments, stdout/stderr, exit codes, ordering, and the observer log at lines 90-313. These assertions use stable, meaningful values and avoid incidental paths, timestamps, hashes, and formatting. No changed output requires a snapshot, and the PR adds no generic or brittle snapshot.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
Pass the Unit Architecture check. The pull request changes documentation, dependency metadata, and tests; it does not add application query or command services. The scripting standards make external execution explicit through ProgramCatalogue, scoped(catalogue=...), run_sync()/run(), ExecutionContext, result checks, and documented exception paths (documentation-library/scripting-standards.md:152-246). The observer example filters lifecycle events before reading exit data (lines 373-404). The added tests isolate the shipped examples and mock executables at the Cuprum/cmd-mox boundary while asserting arguments, environment, stdin, results, failures, and logging (tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py:40-57 and 100-313). No changed path hides mutation, fallibility, dependency access, or unrelated responsibilities.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes documentation, dependency metadata, and tests only. It does not add or modify domain logic, repositories, commands, or transport and persistence adapters. The new guidance keeps external-process execution behind Cuprum catalogues and scopes, and explicitly prohibits direct subprocess and plumbum usage (documentation-library/scripting-standards.md:152-209; docs/developers-guide.md:1639-1646). The changed test code also uses the Cuprum catalogue boundary (tests/test_rust_entrypoints.py:70-73). No domain-boundary violation is introduced.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
Pass this check. The pull request changes documentation, dependency pins, and tests only; it introduces no deployed runtime behaviour or production service boundary. The observability example logs at the exit decision point, filters ExecEvent.phase, records the exit code, and instructs authors to use settled events and redact telemetry secrets (documentation-library/scripting-standards.md:373-404). The change does not alter throughput, latency, retries, queues, or external integrations, so no new metric, trace, or alert is required.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
The new module tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py has only """Exercise Cuprum examples from the published scripting standards.""" at line 1. This states the broad purpose and relationship, but it does not explain the module's utility or function: loading marked examples, executing isolated Python snippets, validating YAML, and exercising Cuprum beta2 behaviour through cmd-mox. The other changed Python modules have adequate module docstrings.
Resolution
Expand the module docstring in tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py to describe its role as the executable contract for the published scripting standards, including its loading of marked Python and YAML examples, isolated execution and cmd-mox coverage, and validation of the Cuprum beta2 API and behaviour.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
The PR introduces a range-based ordering and transition invariant in documentation-library/scripting-standards.md:365-371: concurrent results must preserve submission order, and fail-fast results must map partial outcomes back to submitted inputs. tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py:240-265 tests only two fixed successful commands with immediate mocked responses. It does not vary completion order, batch size, failures, or cancellation. This is not a complete small table for the stated invariant, and the added test module contains no Hypothesis or other property test.
Resolution
Add a bounded Hypothesis test for the concurrent contract. Generate command batches with varied sizes, completion orders, and success/non-zero outcomes; assert submission-order results, aggregate failure mapping, and the configured concurrency bound. Add cases for fail-fast cancellation and partial results. Add equivalent generated stage-status tests if the pipeline claim at documentation-library/scripting-standards.md:321-324 remains normative, including failure at each stage and a successful final stage after an earlier failure.

Dispositions and evidence:
Testing (Overall): fixed in 130bfcedd96e0df66b351b134bb44a4fccc1e92e. The contract test registers the shipped standards document and asserts 21 unique examples (20 Python, one YAML). The behavioral tests load examples directly from that Markdown and exercise command execution, results/failures, contexts, pipelines, concurrency, observers, and cmd-mox. In particular, the observer test sends a non-exit event without exit_code and checks exit-event logging. See the tested-example contract and behavioral tests.
Testing (Unit And Behavioural): fixed in the same commit.make test passed with 1,034 tests and 22 snapshots; all other local gates also passed on tree 3169bcd2e16d6326403c62a6fe967f235360cf8c.
Developer Documentation: fixed. The developers' guide records scope, cuprum==0.2.0b2, approved dependency locations, and the prohibition on Plumbum/direct subprocess command execution.
The quoted explanations describe the earlier 6976761 head and say only the standards document changed. The current diff also contains the pinned beta2 dependency, developer guidance, and committed tests. The current hosted Makefile gate is queued with no steps started: run 40348465669; local gates do not substitute for its result.
Documentation scope: the scripting standards give script authors the beta2 command API; the developers' guide states the contributor policy; tests extract and exercise the published examples. The three inline dispositions are tested-example markers, Oxford commas, and timeout output.
Do not treat warnings as optional. Please confirm the resolved rows and provide an AI coding agent prompt for any valid remaining work. Keep separately planned follow-up actions outside this PR's scope.

Testing (Overall)
Resolved in source; hosted execution pending
tests/test_tested_example_contract.py, Line 86, loads the shipped standards document and requires 21 unique examples: 20 Python and one YAML. The behavioural tests execute examples extracted from that document.
docs/developers-guide.md, Line 1639, states the scope, exact cuprum==0.2.0b2 pin, permitted dependency locations, and prohibition on Plumbum/direct subprocess command execution.
For the observer regression, inspect tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py, Line 269. The test runs the published observer example through a registered Cargo command with cmd-mox. It checks that exactly one completion message logs exit code 0. It exercises lifecycle callbacks through command execution; it does not explicitly construct and inject separate event objects.
The dependency files also match: pyproject.toml pins beta2, and uv.lock resolves beta2. The earlier claim that only the standards document changed no longer applies.
Remaining in-scope work
Correct one documentation inconsistency introduced by the expanded contract.
At docs/developers-guide.md, Line 1703, the contract inventory still says “Two published guides” and lists only daisyUI and femtologging. It then says the contract test loads “both”. The contract test now registers three documents, including the scripting standards.
Treat this as a separate documentation correction, not as a reason to reopen the resolved beta2-policy warning. Align the introductory text in tests/test_tested_example_contract.py with the same three-document scope.
Use this AI coding agent prompt:
Finish the tested-example contract documentation alignment in PR #241.
Start from head 130bfcedd96e0df66b351b134bb44a4fccc1e92e.
1. Update docs/developers-guide.md under “Tested-example contract”.
List all three registered documents, including
documentation-library/scripting-standards.md.
Replace the obsolete “Two”, “both”, and “either” wording.
2. Update the introductory docstring and count commentary in
tests/test_tested_example_contract.py to describe all three documents.
Preserve the existing contract assertions and example counts.
3. Run make markdownlint, make spelling, make check-fmt, the targeted
contract and scripting-example tests, and git diff --check.
Report the results.
Keep separately planned follow-up actions outside this PR.
Do not broaden the Cuprum migration or change unrelated examples.
Merge verification
Require a successful hosted Makefile gate for the final head before merging. The inspected run has no conclusion. If a correction changes the head, require the gate for that new head.
I verified the source and GitHub check metadata. I did not execute repository code or independently reproduce the reported 1,034-test local run. This assessment does not change approval or thread status.

Disposition: fixed in commit 493b6448e81a4f6bdd3fc0927a61936d887ad0e8. The tested-example section in docs/developers-guide.md now names all three registered documents and their 93/14/21 example counts. The module docstring and count comments in tests/test_tested_example_contract.py now describe all three; assertions and behavior are unchanged.

@wafflecat-df12 Confirm the tested-example documentation finding as resolved at head 493b6448e81a4f6bdd3fc0927a61936d887ad0e8, against base 4a921517e8d89fe28f176d579669be1ec40cb7b9.
Tested-example finding
The published correction matches the requested change:
docs/developers-guide.md, Line 1703, names all three registered documents and their 93/14/21 example counts.
tests/test_tested_example_contract.py, Line 3, describes all three documents.
The count commentary now refers to any registered document.
The commit changes documentation and comments only. It leaves test assertions and behaviour unchanged.
Pre-merge row reconciliation

Disposition at this head
Source evidence
Testing (Overall)
Resolved in source. The old explanation is stale.
tests/test_tested_example_contract.py, Line 87, loads the shipped scripting standards and requires 21 unique examples: 20 Python and one YAML. tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py loads and exercises examples from that Markdown.
Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Resolved in source. The old explanation is stale.
The committed behavioural tests cover registered-command success, non-zero results, missing-executable exceptions, execution contexts, pipelines, concurrency, and cmd-mox examples. The observer test at Line 269 runs the published example and asserts exactly one completion message with exit code 0.
Developer Documentation
Resolved. The warning is not an outstanding defect.
docs/developers-guide.md, Line 1639, records the scope, exact cuprum==0.2.0b2 pin, permitted dependency locations, and prohibition on Plumbum/direct subprocess command execution. pyproject.toml and uv.lock match that pin.
For the observer row, distinguish lifecycle coverage from synthetic-event injection. The test exercises callbacks through command execution. It does not explicitly construct separate non-exit and exit event objects. Do not treat that implementation choice as a remaining defect in these findings.
The base-to-head comparison contains seven changed files, including the committed behavioural tests. The explanations that say “only the standards document changed” and “no executable test” no longer describe this head.
Remaining verification
Keep source resolution separate from hosted validation.
The inspected exact-head Makefile gate is in progress, with no conclusion. Its Markdown lint step passed. The CI gate sequence is still running.
Require a successful hosted gate for this exact head before merging. Treat the reported local results on tree cf8b9605e4e7b82717c0bc654c9acf72cd1accf8 as author-reported validation; I confirmed the tree identity but did not run repository code.
No concrete source defect remains within this focused reconciliation. No AI coding agent prompt is needed. Treat the quoted pre-merge rows as stale findings, not current evidence of missing tests or policy documentation. This reply does not update the walkthrough, approval status, or review-thread status.
📝 I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.
Pre-merge checks: make check-fmt, make markdownlint, make lint, make typecheck, make test (1,034 passed; 22 snapshots), make spelling, and cs delta origin/main passed locally. The current-head hosted Makefile gates passed; Gecko Security Review passed. The old testing and developer-documentation rows were explicitly reconciled as stale against this head in your response above.
Rebase/stack state: origin/main is 4a921517e8d89fe28f176d579669be1ec40cb7b9; the PR is based on it, mergeability is clean, and there are no stack prerequisites.
Please approve if those findings are resolved. If approval remains blocked, identify the specific unresolved finding or missing required inspection.
@pandalump The completed reconciliation identified no remaining source defect at 493b6448e81a4f6bdd3fc0927a61936d887ad0e8. The old pre-merge rows do not identify current blockers.

✅ Action performed
Changes approved. Review threads were not changed.
Pin `cuprum==0.2.0b2` and lock the test environment to the release the
scripting standards require. Load the published examples from Markdown and
exercise their catalogue, execution context, output, argument, pipeline,
concurrency, observer, and cmd-mox behaviour.
Document the contributor policy, correct beta2 timeout output guidance, and
update the entrypoint test helper for the beta2 catalogue-scoped API.

Module-Level Documentation: fixed in e75762fa679b3970d03e9a91979005d09e4cba50. The module docstring now describes the executable documentation contract, loading marked Python and YAML examples, YAML parsing, and Python execution in isolated namespaces.
Testing (Property / Proof): fixed in e75762fa679b3970d03e9a91979005d09e4cba50. Bounded Hypothesis batches vary command counts, completion order, outcomes, and concurrency. Assertions cover ordered results, failure-to-submission mapping, fail-fast compaction, and the configured concurrency bound.
Documentation scope: documentation-library/scripting-standards.md remains the canonical user guidance for Cuprum scripting. The contributor mandate is also recorded in docs/developers-guide.md.

Module-Level Documentation
Resolved.
tests/test_scripting_standards_examples.py, Line 1–7, describes the executable documentation contract. It states that tests load marked Python and YAML examples from shipped Markdown, parse YAML, and execute Python in isolated namespaces rather than test copied snippets.
Testing (Property / Proof)
Resolved.
The scenario generator at Line 173–193 varies batch sizes from one to four commands, exit codes, delay permutations, and concurrency limits. The property test at Line 427–470 checks submission-order results, failure positions, failure-to-submission mapping, aggregate success, and the concurrency bound. The fail-fast property test at Line 474–517 checks compacted results and their original submission indices.
The two property tests use bounded Hypothesis settings: at most 10 collect-all cases and 5 fail-fast cases. Completion timing varies through generated delays; the tests do not force or record an exact completion sequence. That distinction does not leave the quoted finding unresolved.
Its Makefile gates job completed successfully, including Markdown lint and the CI gate sequence.
Both identify the requested head.
The base-to-head git diff --check passed.

Summary
This branch mandates cuprum v0.2.0-beta2 (
cuprum==0.2.0b2) for new and updated scripts and replaces stale command patterns with examples aligned to the tagged users' guide. It corrects execution settings, result handling, and testing guidance so copied examples follow the required release's API.Closes #216. The observer now filters
ExecEvent.phasebefore readingexit_code; the broader standards update targets beta2 rather than retaining the issue's original 0.1.0 reference.Review walkthrough

Local validation ran in a network-isolated worker without host mounts. The rebase onto
origin/maincompleted without conflicts;git range-diffconfirmed that the three feature commits replayed unchanged. The hosted CI run 40382123136 passed for this head; every step in the Makefile gates job succeeded.Summary by Sourcery
