code-tidying: tidy has no lane for JavaScript/TypeScript or general source code #4536

Description

@kyle-sexton

Problem

code-tidying:tidy 0.23.2 ships three lanes: shell-tooling, docs-prose, and self-update. Its templates cover dependency roots, host wiring, apps, and polyglot services. None of them fits a small repo whose only code is a few scripts, for example .github/scripts/*.mjs with a node --test suite.

In the melodic-software/.github hygiene sweep (PR melodic-software/.github#153) the JS scripts could only be tidied by running dry-run with no lane and telling the agent to treat .github/scripts/*.mjs as an ad hoc scope, "no lane file". SKILL.md does not describe that path. The run worked: 5 findings, 4 applied, tests stayed 25/25. But it depended on the prompt, not the skill.

Proposed fix

One of:

  • Ship a generic source-code lane (Beck's tidyings plus the Fowler subset) whose scope comes from the language files the repo tracks, with verification taken from the project's test command.
  • Or document a supported ad hoc scope form, for example tidy <glob> when no lane matches: what the lane contract falls back to (watch-for list, verification, commit type), and the fact that no lane file is written.

Evidence

  • Lane list: skills/tidy/lanes/ holds only docs-prose.md, self-update.md, and shell-tooling.md.
  • Sweep step commit: melodic-software/.github@5fc82af (the pr-section-drift.mjs tidyings).
