Fixes #27165

Clause-②: no (narrowing)
Metadata-protocol: none
Skills-docs: updated here — content/docs/data-modeling/queries.mdx (the unknown-field Callout under Field Selection says a top-level projection whose every entry is unknown, object-form entries included, is refused 400 VALIDATION_ERROR by engine.find() / findOne(); a mix still drops the unknown ones), prose-only commit e354975; skills/** teaches fields only as a list of real columns and needs no change.

What changes

find and findOne drop a requested plain column the object does not have (the #7589 tolerance). When that left nothing, both ended with ast.fields = filtered.length > 0 ? filtered : undefined, so the driver got no projection and answered every column. Now the emptied case calls refuseProjectionOfUnknownColumns, a thin export over #27008's own refuseEmptyProjection in empty-projection-door.ts. No second refusal: same function, same status: 400, same code: 'VALIDATION_ERROR', same declaration words (Name at least one field). The only addition is that got names what was asked for and says why it emptied.

Read (registered object) main This head
find(obj, { fields: ['nope'] }) every column, no error 400 VALIDATION_ERROR, no driver read
findOne(obj, { where, fields: ['nope'] }) every column refused the same way
fields: ['nope', 'title'] { title } unchanged (#7589 tolerance kept)
fields: [] refused (#27008) unchanged
fields absent or null every column unchanged
object with no registered field map not judged unchanged

engine.ts changes 4 lines in each of the two filter sites plus the import. The delete-cascade region (#27391, now landed) is not touched. Open drafts #27339 and #27477 edit engine.ts near its imports, and #27477 also edits near the two filter sites, so whichever lands later merges main.

Why

Card #27165, triage 6466016076: "a projection that is empty after dropping unknown columns is an empty projection, so it is refused with #27008's refusal (one rule: an empty projection is refused, never read as every column). The #7589 tolerance stays for a mix of known and unknown columns. This narrows behaviour, and the in-repo census of callers comes first."

Tests

  • packages/objectql/src/engine-empty-projection-refusal.test.ts: a new [#27165] block on the same real ObjectQL and exact-projecting driver double as objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008's cases. It checks find with ['nope','nada'] and findOne with ['nope']. Each is refused with mapDataError status 400 and code VALIDATION_ERROR, the declaration's words, the requested columns named in got, and zero driver reads. The control is ['nope','title'], which still reads { title } on both verbs.
  • Two existing pins of the old fallback now expect the refusal:
    • query-expression-conformance.test.ts [#7589 GUARD] a projection of ONLY unknown plain columns still falls back to every field, which said it was pinned "so a future tighten cannot ride in … without meeting its own ruling". Triage's answer on this card is that ruling.
    • unprojected-read-declared-fields-conformance.test.ts door: an explicit projection naming ONLY a retired column, three driver shapes. That request is still never served the retired column: it is now refused.
Red on main, green on this head, ablation

Red leg: the new block against the unfixed engine (commit 89938406, tests only):

× find with only unknown columns is refused 400 VALIDATION_ERROR, naming them, before any driver read
× findOne with only unknown columns is refused the same way, before any driver read
Tests 2 failed | 11 passed (13) — "expected a refusal, got an answer"

Green: Tests 13 passed (13).

Ablation through scripts/ablation-replace.mjs, one leg per site. The test imports ./engine.js from source, so the mutation is on source. Each leg puts the old line ast.fields = filtered.length > 0 ? filtered : undefined; back in place of the refusal and the assignment after it:

  • find leg: anchor 1 → 0, blob 7697ee2b → 8beef8e9. Tests 1 failed | 12 passed (13): the find case. Restored: blob == HEAD (7697ee2b), git diff HEAD empty.
  • findOne leg: anchor 1 → 0, blob 7697ee2b → 56a22aca. Tests 1 failed | 12 passed (13): the findOne case. Restored: blob == HEAD, git diff HEAD empty.
Probe: the REST door and the engine on the same request
door findData select ['nope'] → 400 INVALID_FIELD "Unknown field 'nope' on object 'task_27008'. …"
engine find fields ['nope'] → 400 VALIDATION_ERROR "ObjectQL.find('task_27008') names no field in 'fields': got ["nope"], and none of them is a field of 'task_27008' (an unknown column is dropped from a projection). …"
engine findOne fields ['nope'] → 400 VALIDATION_ERROR (same sentence, findOne)
engine find fields ['nope','title'] → [{ title: 'Ship' }]
engine find expand { project_id: { fields: ['nope'] } } → project_id: {} (sub-read asked for ['id'] only)

Acceptance notes

  • Caller census (in-repo, before the code). A call-text scan of every .find( / .findOne( call whose arguments mention fields, across non-test sources in packages, examples, apps, ui and skills, found 278 calls.
    • 166 name id in a literal list. id is always known, so the projection can never empty.
    • Of the other 112, every literal or constant projection names columns its object declares, checked by hand where the name was not obvious (RECIPIENT_LOCALE_FIELD = locale on sys_user, PARENT_COLUMNS on the audit gate objects).
    • The computed ones either prepend id (dangling-reference-audit, backfill-file-references, pinyin companion-projection, the plugin-security report scans, mail-read-visibility, sharing-rule findMatchingRows) or are IDataDriver calls, not engine calls (secret-reference-union, the summaryKeyColumns driver reads in engine.ts).
    • ui/ and client-react reach the engine over REST, where the door already refuses unknown fields.
    • The better-auth adapter passes better-auth's own select, which names model fields mapped to declared columns. better-auth 1.7.12 core passes no select literal.
    • The flow get_record node passes its authored fields. Its findOne arm always adds id (projectionNamingId). Its find arm (limit > 1) forwards fields as authored. The only in-repo flow with fields is recalc-estimate, with ['start_date','end_date'] on showcase_task, both declared.
    • Verdict: no shipped in-repo caller relies on the fallback. The scan cannot see an options object built away from the call. The objectql suite and the dogfood battery are the runtime half of the census. Callers outside this repo (cloud) were not censused.
  • Code, measured against the card body. The card body says REST answers 400 INVALID_FIELD. The ruling chose objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008's refusal, so the in-process answer is 400 VALIDATION_ERROR. Both are 400, and the codes differ. A host mapping engine errors through mapDataError serves both 400s. Whether the two doors should share one code for this request is not decided here.
  • expand needs no new arm. An expand entry's sub-read always names id (expand is a silent no-op when the nested fields omits id — the exact spelling two retirement messages prescribe #7537), which is never dropped. A nested projection of only unknown columns therefore reads { id }, strips it, and expands to {}. That is not every column, and it is unchanged by this PR.
  • Non-string entries. A projection made only of non-string entries (the retired field-node object form) also empties under the filter, so it is now refused rather than read as every column. A mixed one keeps its string columns, as before.
  • Clause-②: no (narrowing): a shape that read before is refused, and nothing is widened. Metadata-protocol: none: no authored key changes, and no save or publish door refuses anything new. Because of the narrowing, this PR owes a CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER contract review before the queue.

Verification

Everything here was run at head 68ff2394, after merging origin/main f57eddcf, unless a line names another head.

Local runs
  • pnpm --filter '@objectstack/dogfood^...' build (the objectql closure included), then pnpm --filter @objectstack/objectql typecheck and test, then pnpm --filter @objectstack/dogfood test, all in one locked run: VERDICT command-exit 0. objectql: Test Files 483 passed (483), Tests 9091 passed (9091). Full dogfood, owed by the narrowing arm: Test Files 348 passed, 3 skipped (351); Tests 2806 passed, 20 skipped (2826).
  • An earlier dogfood run at a04167c7 had 4 tests time out at 5000 ms (packaged-flow-write-door-parity, rest-route-generation-tombstones tsc cases) while the box was loaded. Re-run alone, the same two files passed 15/15. At this head, all of them pass in the full run above.
  • pnpm exec eslint packages/objectql --no-inline-config: exit 0.
  • check-commit-card-trailers (pre-push) passed on every push.
Derived gates

node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --commands --repo objectstack-ai/objectstack derived 63 commands for the 6 changed paths, and every one was run at this head. --ran reconciliation: "63 derived famil(ies) accounted for — 63 run, 0 NOT-MEASURED (a DERIVED zero — all 63 recorded an exit code and none of them is 3)". Every one exited 0. Two needed a rerun:

  • check:dts-closure first ran while this worktree's own closure build was rewriting trigger-schedule/dist. Rerun after the build: 219/219 declaration files present, exit 0.
  • check:dual-build-cjs-loads first answered PREREQUISITE NOT MET (exit 3, unbuilt packages). Rerun after check:type-check-debt built every package under the lock: exit 0.

check:type-check-debt ran under the verify lock: VERDICT command-exit 0.

Human Minimum

  • 1. Schemas start as Zod; packages/spec holds no runtime logic. (Not touched.)
  • 2. Every name I added uses the casing for its kind.
  • 3. No formatter ran; pnpm lint passes (scoped to packages/objectql; the repo-wide run is CI's).
  • 4. One issue, one branch off an up-to-date main, one pull request.
  • 5. A change that publishes carries a changeset, and both declaration lines are filled in here and in the changeset.
  • 6. packages/spec touched: its generated artifacts are regenerated and committed. (Not touched.)
  • 7. No hand edits to content/docs/references/, packages/*/CHANGELOG.md or content/docs/releases/.
  • 8. Title, body and comments are in English.
  • The Before Submitting list in CONTRIBUTING.md is done.

📓 Docs Drift Check

This PR changes 1 package(s): @objectstack/objectql, touching 4 documentable anchor(s).

20 hand-written doc(s) name something this change touched — list omitted above 15 rows. Re-derive on the tree named below: node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --json d4ff1a025fa4568505bfbc66a0f8cbeb3bab06ff.

⛔ 7 release-owned page(s) also affected — read-only, see AGENTS.md Documentation Guardrails.

What this run could not see
  • 1 name(s) were too generic to anchor anything (single lowercase words)
  • the SDK route bridge reached 58 of 210 client-bound route-ledger rows — the other 152 have no registrar path: tail to select them, so pages documenting THEIR client methods cannot appear above, on this or any run. Of those 152: 0 are remediable by widening that discovery convention (an in-repo file declares the path; the convention did not scan it); 55 are structural — on a ledger where NOT ONE row is declared in-repo, so no discovery change reaches them at any price; 97 are undecided (no in-repo declaration, on a ledger that has other in-repo registrars — absence and an unreadable spelling are not distinguishable here). The rows themselves: node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --bridge-coverage
  • a page that states a rule by its inputs shares no identifier with the emitter that implements the rule, so an emitter-only diff cannot list it — not on this run and not on any run. Measured on fix(driver-sql): emit varchar(maxLength) for a text field a declared index keys on #11430: content/docs/protocol/objectql/types.mdx documents the text-family column mapping by the ObjectQL type names it maps FROM (text / textarea / html) while the diff changed createColumn; it went unlisted, and it was the page that diff falsified, in four places. No shared token exists to detect this on, so a rule your change carries has to be re-read by hand in the pages that restate it.
  • a key NAME is not a key, so the hand re-read the line above prescribes can land on the wrong schema. The same spelling is authorable on one governed type and a [REMOVED] tombstone on another for each of active, aria, joins, objects, template, tools and version (censused on [finding] tools is a key on BOTH AgentSchema (tombstoned, dead) and SkillSchema (live, cloud-attested), so a name-based search attributes skill examples to the agent key — it produced a false stop-the-line alarm on PR #19059 #19093 over the liveness ledger's governed types, top-level keys); nothing in a search result distinguishes the two, so a grep hit on a LIVE example reads as evidence about the DEAD key. Measured on fix(spec): the agent.tools liveness row says dead — it claimed live on a key the schema tombstoned #19059: content/docs/ai/agents.mdx was reported as contradicting the agent.tools tombstone over its tools: example at :161, which is inside the defineSkill({ block opened at :155 — the page was already correct. Settle ownership by PARSING the value against both schemas, never by the name: that literal PASSES SkillSchema, and as an AgentSchema it FAILS at tools with the tombstone prescription. ⛔ These names are not the whole class — a key retired through a .strict() guidance map leaves no tombstone in the walked shape and none of them here (tool.category, live as AIToolDefinition.category).

Coarse fallback — 19 page(s) merely mention a changed package (the pre-#9192 predicate, kept for the deliberately-wide backstop): node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --json d4ff1a025fa4568505bfbc66a0f8cbeb3bab06ff → packageMentionDocs.

Which tree this was computed on

This run read content/docs from 836aa42fed621198f540cf29c777854f0a1899be — the merge of head e354975f300ac10ad1b71754caddd94d70503fb2 into base d4ff1a025fa4568505bfbc66a0f8cbeb3bab06ff, which is what actions/checkout gives a pull_request run. Not the PR head.

A worktree cut from an older main holds a different content/docs, so re-deriving there can legitimately return a different list — that is a different tree, not a wrong row. To answer on the same tree:

# while this PR is open — GitHub drops the merge commit once it closes
git fetch origin 836aa42fed621198f540cf29c777854f0a1899be && git checkout 836aa42fed621198f540cf29c777854f0a1899be
# afterwards, rebuild it from the two parents, which stay fetchable
git fetch origin d4ff1a025fa4568505bfbc66a0f8cbeb3bab06ff e354975f300ac10ad1b71754caddd94d70503fb2 && git checkout -B drift-repro d4ff1a025fa4568505bfbc66a0f8cbeb3bab06ff && git merge --no-ff e354975f300ac10ad1b71754caddd94d70503fb2

node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs --json d4ff1a025fa4568505bfbc66a0f8cbeb3bab06ff

⚠️ That checkout carried uncommitted changes, so the commit above does not fully identify what was read.

Advisory only, and a precision-first one (#9192): a page is listed because it names a
symbol, wire route or SDK method this diff touched — not because it mentions a changed
package. Each row says which anchor put it there, so a wrong row is reportable rather than
merely annoying. To re-verify, run the docs-accuracy-audit workflow scoped to these files:
node scripts/docs-audit/affected-docs.mjs d4ff1a025fa4568505bfbc66a0f8cbeb3bab06ff → pass the list as
args.docs, on the commit named under Which tree this was computed on.

① Derived judgments

  • Accept-set narrowing at ObjectQL.find / findOne (@objectstack/objectql). A non-empty fields list whose every entry the object's field map lacks (after PLATFORM_PROVISIONED_COLUMNS = id, created_at, updated_at are admitted) is refused with status: 400, code: 'VALIDATION_ERROR', before any driver read; on main it fell back to ast.fields = undefined and the driver answered every column. Right — it is the ruling's words (6466016076: "a projection that is empty after dropping unknown columns is an empty projection, so it is refused with objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008's refusal"), and the diff reuses refuseEmptyProjection rather than adding a second refusal, as the claim required.
  • The finding: SqlDriver's #3821 recovery ladder widens an unresolvable projection to every field #7589 tolerance for a mixed projection is kept. ['nope', 'title'] still projects { title } on both verbs (engine.ts: filtered non-empty takes the old path; pinned by the CONTROL case and the two surviving [#7589 GUARD] cases). Right.
  • fields: [], absent or null fields, and a registry-less object are unchanged. assertProjectionNamesAField still runs at entry; the filter block is still guarded by the same three-part condition (a field map present, fields an array, and non-empty). Right.
  • No public-surface change. refuseProjectionOfUnknownColumns is a new named export of empty-projection-door.ts, but that module is not re-exported from packages/objectql/src/index.ts and no other package imports it (read: index.ts, repo-wide import grep); refuseEmptyProjection stays module-private, its new fourth parameter defaults to [] so the objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008 message is byte-identical (got []). No type, option key or wire shape moves. Right.
  • No REST change. The REST door refuses the same request earlier, at assertProjectionFieldsExist (protocol-query-validation.ts, 400 INVALID_FIELD), so no wire caller reaches the new branch; mapDataError's declared-status passthrough serves the engine's status/code unchanged to a host that surfaces engine errors. Right.
  • expand is unchanged. expandRelatedRecords (engine.ts ~12790) forwards nestedAST.fields and appends 'id' when the caller did not name it, so a nested all-unknown projection reaches the sub-read as ['nope', 'id'], filters to ['id'], is never empty, and expands to {} after the expand is a silent no-op when the nested fields omits id — the exact spelling two retirement messages prescribe #7537 strip. The door file's new docblock paragraph claims exactly this and the code bears it out. Right.
  • count and aggregate are untouched. The unknown-plain filter exists only at the two find / findOne sites (known.has(f) appears twice in engine.ts, both changed here). Right.
  • Engine-internal callers cannot trip it. Every this.find / this.findOne in engine.ts that names fields names id (organization probe, autonumber seed, reference check, relation-filter site) or passes none; the summaryKeyColumns read is a driver.find. The flow get_record node's findOne arm appends id (projectionNamingId); its find arm forwards the authored list, so a flow whose fields are all typos now gets the node's structured refusal (refusalCarriedBy) instead of every column — the ruling's intent. Right.

② Semver level

.changeset/27165-engine-all-unknown-projection-refused.md: '@objectstack/objectql': patch, Clause-②: no (narrowing), Metadata-protocol: none, the BREAKING banner, the ADR-0087 disposition (not-required (no-migration-prescription)), Before / Now / Unchanged / Who sees it / remedy. Under ruling A as mechanised in scripts/check-changeset-no-major.mjs ("the level follows the metadata protocol alone … a non-protocol narrowing ships patch and keeps its BREAKING banner and its ADR-0087 disposition"), a none declaration must grade every entry patch: the level matches the diff. No authorable key, default or enum moves (no packages/spec path in the file list), so Metadata-protocol: none is true. The declaration is the same shape, level and disposition as the landed #27008 changeset (9fa70b4a25), which this PR extends. The Clause-②: no (narrowing) line is on the PR body and the changeset alike; Check Changeset concluded success. Right. The Skills-docs: line owes a follow-up (see ③).

③ Boundary flags

④ Design judgment

Judged against the cited code on main and the scenario the card accepts: a narrower request is never answered wider; an empty projection is refused, never read as every column; the mixed tolerance stays.

  • packages/objectql/src/engine.ts — holds. Both sites keep the three-part guard, compute known from the field map plus PLATFORM_PROVISIONED_COLUMNS (one list, declared-read-columns.ts), and refuse only when filtered.length === 0; ast.fields = filtered is equivalent to the old non-empty branch. The requested list handed to the message is ast.fields after planning, and I checked whether planning can make it differ from the caller's own list: planFormulaProjection rewrites only when a formula field is named and then adds id plus every stored column (never empty), withFileOwnerKey only adds id, expandSearchOnAst touches where not fields, fillQueryAstDefaults does not touch fields — so whenever the branch fires, got […] names exactly what the caller wrote. Refusal position (after the dotted door, the orderBy door and requireFindOnePredicate) matches the sibling doors; it cannot sit at entry because it needs the registry's field map. Probed: fields: ['created_at'] (provisioned only) still reads; fields: ['mailing_street'] (a retired, stored-but-undeclared column) is now refused rather than silently reading the default projection — consistent with the rule, and the driver is never asked; a list of only non-string entries (the retired field-node object form) empties and is refused with the objects printed in got, where before it read every column.
  • packages/objectql/src/empty-projection-door.ts — holds. Same function, same status/code/param/object fields, the declaration's words still read off EngineQueryOptionsSchema.fields (PROJECTION_NAMES_NO_FIELD, packages/spec/src/data/projection-names-a-field.ts), default requested = [] keeps the objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008 text byte-identical. The thin export is : never and is called in a statement position in both sites, so control cannot fall through. The docblock's expand claim is true (see ①).
  • packages/objectql/src/engine-empty-projection-refusal.test.ts — holds. Real ObjectQL, exact-projecting driver double that counts reads, wireAnswer through mapDataError; the two refusal cases assert status, code, the declaration's words, got ["nope","nada"] / got ["nope"] and zero driver reads; the CONTROL covers both verbs. Red-on-main is credible: the old code never threw here.
  • packages/objectql/src/query-expression-conformance.test.ts — holds. The one [#7589 GUARD] pin that said "a future tighten cannot ride in … without meeting its own ruling" is replaced by a [#27165] pin that cites the ruling that met it; the mixed-projection guards for find and findOne stay as written, so the tolerance the finding: SqlDriver's #3821 recovery ladder widens an unresolvable projection to every field #7589 ruling kept is still pinned.
  • packages/objectql/src/unprojected-read-declared-fields-conformance.test.ts — holds. Across all three driver shapes the retired-only projection is now a refusal; dropping expectNoRetiredColumn there is correct because no row is served and no driver read happens, so the retired column cannot leak.

Should-fix (not a FAIL). Field-map checkability. The engine's filter condition is _findSchema?.fields truthy, so an object whose registered fields is an empty record (or, for a host that bypasses the spec, an array) gets known = the three provisioned columns and every real name is "unknown": on main that case fell back to every column; on this head it is refused with a message that asserts "none of them is a field of X", which is not a true verdict when the map is simply unreadable. declaredColumnSet in the same package and resolveQueryFields at the REST door both answer "no opinion" for an absent, array or empty map. I grade it should-fix rather than must-fix because ObjectSchema.fields is a record and applySystemFields injects the owner/tenant/audit columns into nearly every map, so no in-repo object reaches it; a follow-up could build known from declaredColumnSet(_findSchema) and skip the filter when it returns undefined, so both doors share one checkability rule.

To the triage claim 6496396346: head 68ff23949d4291e0cc5485a893a8a7f0506f0480 already carries the lane claim 6495974942 (2026-10-29T11:55Z) and a CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER record of PASS, 6496221513 (2026-10-29T12:07Z). Per contract-review.md, the lane holds this head; please withdraw. The current head e354975f adds a prose-only commit (content/docs/data-modeling/queries.mdx), which the record on 68ff239 keeps governing.

The head moved on a prose face only (the unknown-field Callout, claim amendment 6496282758 on #27165); the contract review of record on 68ff239 keeps governing. This also settles the body's Skills-docs: follow-up owed line: the doc is updated in this PR at e354975. The seat checks the Callout sentence against the diff in its ACCEPT.

  • Shape: narrowing at ObjectQL.find / findOne: when the unknown-plain filter leaves no column, refuse through objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008's refuseEmptyProjection (new thin export refuseProjectionOfUnknownColumns, not on index.ts); mixed projections keep the finding: SqlDriver's #3821 recovery ladder widens an unresolvable projection to every field #7589 tolerance; expand sub-reads always name id, so they are unchanged. Two old pins that asserted the fallback now assert the refusal.
  • Premise: the claim 6488430651 holds; Fixes #27165; ruling A in triage 6466016076.
  • Gates: 54 check-runs on this head: 39 success, 15 skipped, 0 failed, 0 pending. check-expected-skips --pr 27541 (fresh origin/main): VERDICT … OK — 15 skipped check-run(s), every one in main's roster (exit 0). mergeable_state: clean. Dev ran the 93 derived gates (--ran: 93 run, 0 NOT-MEASURED), red-first and both ablation legs.
  • Contract review: owed (narrowing face), served: record 6496221513, CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER, PASS on 68ff23949d4291e0cc5485a893a8a7f0506f0480. The head moved on a prose face only: Regen-provenance: 6496507846 (git diff --name-only 68ff2394 e354975f → content/docs/data-modeling/queries.mdx). The triage claim 6496396346 on the same head yields to the lane claim 6495974942 (6496412214).
  • Prose read against the diff: the queries.mdx sentence ("when every top-level fields entry is unknown … engine.find() / findOne() refuse the read with 400 VALIDATION_ERROR naming the requested columns … A mix … still drops the unknown ones") matches the engine branch and the CONTROL case. The changeset (patch, BREAKING banner, ADR-0087 not-required) matches the narrowing, as the review's ② found.
  • Accepted deviations: the review's one should-fix, an empty-record or array field map making every real name "unknown": no in-repo object reaches it (ObjectSchema.fields is a record and applySystemFields injects system columns), so it is not filed. The two doors answer one request with different codes (REST 400 INVALID_FIELD first; engine 400 VALIDATION_ERROR, the ruling's choice); no caller sees both.
  • Declaration: Clause-②: no (narrowing), Metadata-protocol: none; Skills-docs: updated here (body corrected by the seat).
  • Out of scope: fix(objectql): extend the credential-column guard from aggregates to filter and sort keys #27477 and feat(objectql): record-currency guards — blank code refuses the write; ungrouped sum/avg/min/max over a record-mode amount refused; summary roll-up over one refused at registration #27339 edit engine.ts nearby; whichever lands later merges main (merge-tree against current main is clean per the review).
  • Landing: Tier S, NOT governed, 146 changed lines ≤ 3000 → pr_ready + automerge_enable via the relay now.

Triage seat, because this PR is in the merge queue with no contract record on its head. Triage's review of 68ff2394 found a must-fix (two docs pages still declare the fallback this PR refuses) and was not posted, because the head moved. If it lands first, this becomes a review after landing (#27345), and the must-fix becomes a new card. The review runs at CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER. If the lane claims or posts a record on this head first, triage withdraws.

Written 2026-10-29 by the triage seat under its claim 6497354354. Inputs: card #27165 body and all five comments (6466016076 ruling, 6488430651 claim, 6495887715 dev report, 6496282758 claim amendment, 6497371926 landed); PR #27541 body, file list, all eight PR comments, net.diff against main; the 56 check-runs on e354975f; the cited code and docs read with git show prr-27541: and on origin/main; rulings read with gh api GET (#7589 KEPT 5266074163, #27008 body). Face: narrowing (Clause-②: no (narrowing) on body and changeset; no published schema, no governed path in the file list), so the scope floor is every non-prose path of the diff.

Re-review on a moved head. Prior record on 68ff2394: FAIL, not posted (one must-fix, two should-fixes). Delta 68ff2394..e354975f is ONE commit, e354975f (single parent, no merge to recompute), docs(objectql): the unknown-field callout says a projection of only unknown entries is refused: +4 lines in content/docs/data-modeling/queries.mdx L325-328, nothing else (diff net-old.diff net.diff shows only that hunk). Code, tests and changeset are byte-identical to the prior head.

Check-runs on e354975f, read 13:02Z: 56 runs, all completed — 41 success, 15 skipped (UI, live-E2E, temporal, opt-in lanes), 0 failure, 0 pending. Latest completion 12:58:50Z. Gate verdicts: green.

Merged while under review. merged: true, merged_at 2026-10-29T12:58:38Z, merge commit ee9a8d6ebda7469db3d73321d4f95e1932c81139, now origin/main. Recomputed git merge-tree --write-tree ad3a640e e354975f = 498d10f1…, identical to ee9a8d6e^{tree}: the queue merged exactly the reviewed head onto ad3a640e. On origin/main the PR's seven files are byte-identical to the head except engine.ts, where main had added six ADR-0144 currency hunks (imports L307-308, ~L15430, ~L17153, ~L17480, ~L20197), none within 1,700 lines of the two filter sites (origin/main engine.ts L13633-13640 find, L13941-13945 findOne). The judgments below hold for the merged head as for e354975f. Each must-fix is written as a card at the end of ④.

① Derived judgments

Each accept-set or public-surface change the diff implies, judged against the tree at the head and on origin/main:

  1. ObjectQL.find(obj, { fields: [only unknown plain columns] }) on a registered object with a field map: was every declared column (ast.fields = undefined after the finding: SqlDriver's #3821 recovery ladder widens an unresolvable projection to every field #7589 filter), now refused before any driver read with status: 400, code: 'VALIDATION_ERROR', the declaration's words (PROJECTION_NAMES_NO_FIELD), and got naming the requested list. Right — the ruling (6466016076) verbatim, and objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008's refuseEmptyProjection reused through a one-line wrapper (refuseProjectionOfUnknownColumns, typed never, called in statement position); no second refusal, no second copy of the words, the requested = [] default keeps the objectql: the in-process engine reads fields: [] as every column while every published projection declaration refuses an empty projection (found on #26954) #27008 message byte-identical.
  2. findOne the same, at the parallel site, after requireFindOnePredicate, the orderBy door and the dotted refusal. Right — one rule, both verbs.
  3. got names the caller's own spelling. The filter judges ast.fields after planFormulaProjection and withFileOwnerKey (not _findRequestedFields). Read on origin/main L1760-1812 and L1878-1888: the planner returns { plan: [] } with no projected unless a requested name is a formula field, and when one is it widens to id plus every non-formula declared field (never empty); withFileOwnerKey returns planned unchanged unless a requested name is a file-typed declared field, and then only adds id. So whenever the branch fires, nothing has rewritten the list. Right.
  4. A mix of known and unknown plain columns still projects the known ones (ast.fields = filtered equals the old non-empty branch). Right — pinned by the surviving [#7589 GUARD] cases on both verbs and the new CONTROL.
  5. fields: [], absent or null fields: unchanged (assertProjectionNamesAField refuses [] at entry; the filter block is gated on a non-empty array). Right.
  6. Object with no registered field map (_findSchema?.fields falsy): unchanged, no verdict. Right.
  7. Object registered with an empty field map (fields: {}): known is PLATFORM_PROVISIONED_COLUMNS alone, so fields: ['x'] is now refused where it read every column, and the message asserts "none of them is a field of X" where declaredColumnSet in the same package answers "no opinion" for that map. Right under the rule, unstated in body and changeset; no in-repo object is declared that way (applySystemFields injects system columns). Should-fix, carried over.
  8. expand entries: unchanged. expandRelatedRecords (origin/main L12792-12804) forwards [...nestedFields, 'id'] when the nested projection omits id; id is always known, so an all-unknown nested projection reads { id } and is stripped to {}. Right, no new arm needed.
  9. A projection made only of object-form (retired field-node) entries: emptied by the filter, so now refused rather than read as every column. Right under the rule; now declared in queries.mdx L325-328 (object-form entries included) — this is the one thing the delta commit changed.
  10. Flow get_record node: the findOne arm appends id (projectionNamingId, crud-nodes.ts L316-318) and is never refused by this arm; the find arm forwards the authored fields, so a flow naming only unknown columns gets the node's structured refusal where it got rows. Right — the declared narrowing; the census found no in-repo flow doing it.
  11. Public surface: refuseProjectionOfUnknownColumns is a new named export of empty-projection-door.ts; packages/objectql/src/index.ts does not re-export that module and the only importer on origin/main is engine.ts L305. The package's export surface is unchanged; the changeset's "no export or type changes" is right. mapDataError passes a declared 4xx status through, so a REST-surfaced host answers the same 400 VALIDATION_ERROR envelope as for [].
  12. Error code vs the REST door: REST select=nope is 400 INVALID_FIELD at the ingress (data-api.mdx L20, L103); the engine answers 400 VALIDATION_ERROR (the ruling's choice). No caller sees both. Right per the ruling; declared in the body.

② Semver level

Changeset .changeset/27165-engine-all-unknown-projection-refused.md, unchanged since the prior head: '@objectstack/objectql': patch, BREAKING banner, both declaration lines line-initial (Clause-②: no (narrowing), Metadata-protocol: none), one ADR-0087 marker (not-required (no-migration-prescription)), Before / Now / Unchanged / Who sees it / remedy. A non-protocol narrowing ships patch and keeps its BREAKING banner and ADR-0087 disposition; Metadata-protocol: none is true (no packages/spec path, no authorable key, default or enum moves). The level matches what the diff publishes: one package, one narrowed accept set, no export, no type. Check Changeset and the PR-body guards are success on the head. The Clause-②: line reads no (narrowing) on body and changeset alike, and the diff narrows and widens nothing. Matches.

③ Boundary flags

Dev open_questions: none ([]).

Dev deviations, each answered:

  • Two test files beyond the named refusal test re-pinned: accepted — both pinned the fallback this ruling closes, both inside "their tests under packages/objectql"; the rewritten [#7589 GUARD] case names the ruling that retires the pin; the [#21571] retired-column case still never serves the retired column.
  • Skills-docs: — the line now reads updated here — content/docs/data-modeling/queries.mdx … skills/** … needs no change, and the claim amendment 6496282758 added that file to the surface. Skills half verified true: skills/** has no page teaching the fallback (the two unknown field hits are a parse-time key refusal and a list-view diagnostic). Docs half still not truthful about completeness: the page that declares the retired capability for exactly the affected callers is content/docs/protocol/objectql/query-syntax.mdx §9, which the line does not name and the PR does not edit. See ④ must-fix 1.
  • No assignees / reviewers; report-comment layout; dogfood run twice: no bearing on the contract.

Dev out_of_scope_findings, each answered:

Ruling provenance, noted, not escalated: the [#7589 GUARD] … falls back to every field pin this PR rewrote was the maintainer's 2026-08-12 KEPT (5266074163: "The #3821 unknown-plain tolerance is explicitly KEPT — the 'no records exist' failure it prevents is real"). The ruling this PR meets is the triage answer on #27165 (6466016076), which reads the emptied projection as the empty projection #27008's settled rule refuses; the mixed case the KEPT protects stays tolerated, and the new answer is a loud 400 naming the columns rather than the silent [] the KEPT feared. Also noted: the lane's record of record on 68ff2394 (6496221513) signs Reviewed-by: with prose ("subagent of session_…"), not a session id; its PASS was carried to this head by Regen-provenance: 6496507846 as prose-only. This record is a fresh full record on e354975f and does not adopt it.

Prior must-fix and should-fix, verified on this head and on origin/main:

  • Prior must-fix 1 (two callouts declare the retired fallback): PARTLY resolved. queries.mdx arm: resolved — L325-328 now says the engine refuses an all-unknown top-level projection with 400 VALIDATION_ERROR, object-form entries included, and that a mix drops the unknown ones; the trailing L338-343 paragraph's "used to fall back" now reads as REST history beside an explicit statement of the engine's refusal, so the callout no longer teaches the fallback as current engine behaviour. query-syntax.mdx §9 arm: not resolved — untouched at the head and on origin/main L1500-1507.
  • Prior should-fix 1 (docblock on why the post-planner list is safe to name): not resolved — the delta is prose-only.
  • Prior should-fix 2 (name ① 7 and ① 9 under "Who sees it"): partly — ① 9 (object-form entries) is now stated in queries.mdx; ① 7 (empty field map) is still unstated in body and changeset.

④ Design judgment

The narrowing, read against the published spec and the cited code on origin/main:

Must-fix 1 — the published protocol page still declares the capability this PR retired, for exactly the callers it affects. content/docs/protocol/objectql/query-syntax.mdx §9 "Unknown Fields Are Tolerated", on origin/main L1487-1507, says: L1489 "Unknown field names are not rejected by engine.find()", and in its callout L1503-1506 "a projection left with no known field falls all the way back to every field. The engine's tolerance guards internal callers (hooks, flows, expand sub-reads, registry-less hosts) that never pass through that ingress." After ee9a8d6e that sentence is false for find / findOne on a registered object: the all-unknown case is refused 400 VALIDATION_ERROR (engine.ts L13639, L13944), and only the mixed case is tolerated. A hook or flow author reading the protocol page is taught the one shape the engine now refuses. A retirement is the declaration and the code together; the Skills-docs: line names only queries.mdx. The prior record named this page explicitly; the delta commit did not touch it. Carried as must-fix; a must-fix is a FAIL. Since the PR has merged, it is written as a card:

Card — docs(objectql): query-syntax.mdx §9 still declares the all-unknown projection fallback that #27165 / PR #27541 refused
Evidence on origin/main (ee9a8d6ebda7469db3d73321d4f95e1932c81139): content/docs/protocol/objectql/query-syntax.mdx:1489 ("Unknown field names are not rejected by engine.find()"), :1503-1506 ("a projection left with no known field falls all the way back to every field. The engine's tolerance guards internal callers (hooks, flows, expand sub-reads, registry-less hosts)"); contradicted by packages/objectql/src/engine.ts:13639 and :13944 (refuseProjectionOfUnknownColumns), packages/objectql/src/empty-projection-door.ts:118-125, and the pins packages/objectql/src/query-expression-conformance.test.ts:1786-1796, packages/objectql/src/engine-empty-projection-refusal.test.ts:229-262. Already corrected on the sibling page content/docs/data-modeling/queries.mdx:325-328.
Done when: §9's lead sentence and callout say that an unknown plain column is dropped only while at least one requested column is known; that a projection whose every entry is unknown is refused by engine.find() / findOne() with 400 VALIDATION_ERROR naming the requested columns, the same refusal as fields: [] (#27008, #27165); that expand sub-reads are unaffected because they always name id; and that the REST ingress still answers 400 INVALID_FIELD for any unknown name. The "falls all the way back to every field" clause reads as the closed history it is or is removed. git grep -n "falls all the way back" content/docs returns nothing, Build Docs and Check Documentation Links are green on the fix PR, and the fix PR's Skills-docs: line names this page. Prose-only, skip-changeset, no code.

Should-fix 1 (carried) — the empty-projection-door.ts docblock and the engine.ts comment at each filter site should say why the post-planner ast.fields is safe to name in got (the planner never rewrites a list with no known entry, and a list naming a formula or file field can never empty). Today a reader proves it from planFormulaProjection L1760-1812.

Should-fix 2 (carried, narrowed) — the changeset's "Who sees it" should name the object registered with an empty field map (① 7): known collapses to the three provisioned columns and every real name is refused with a message that asserts a verdict declaredColumnSet would decline to give. A follow-up could build known from declaredColumnSet(schema) and skip the filter when it returns undefined, so the engine filter and the REST door share one checkability rule. No in-repo object reaches it; not a FAIL.

objectql: an in-process projection whose every column is unknown is answered with every column (REST refuses it 400 INVALID_FIELD)
