feat(tracing): turn + generation input/output, Langfuse sessions, and ACP coder spans - #3587
Conversation
The project board dispatches coders from a background loop, outside any turn, so no coder run ever reached Langfuse. AcpClient.prompt, the seam every coder run crosses (same reason the #3015 telemetry row lives there), now opens an acp:<name> agent span with the run's outcome, and each finished coder tool call lands as an explicit child: the reader task that sees tool events does not carry the span's context. PR #3587 adds Langfuse tracing spans to AcpClient.prompt() with explicit tool-call parenting. No findings were raised by any of the five review angles (correctness, removed-behavior, cross-file, conventions, protoPatch structural), so there was nothing to verify. The empty verify pass is not a gap. No action needed.
No findings — the review came back clean.

PR #3587 adds ACP agent-span tracing (a trace_span wrapper around prompt(), explicit tool-call parenting via a new parent param, and an update_span helper). The diff is purely additive on the tracing side; the one latent bug it touches (unbound state/tool_calls on the lock-timeout path) is actually fixed by the new initialization. No findings were raised, so there was nothing to verify. The two open threads (rawOutput gap at line 1028, Langfuse SDK as_type version pin at line 1318) are already being discussed in existing PR review threads.
No findings — the review came back clean.

[]…fuse sessions Traces showed blank input/output everywhere. trace_session never set IO, and generations left it to the LiteLLM gateway's callback, which an agent on a native OAuth provider (protoEngineer) never reaches, so its prompts and replies were logged nowhere. The session id sat in metadata only. - trace_session takes input= (the user's message) and propagates session_id + agent tag as real trace attributes. - TraceContextMiddleware sends each call's messages and reply (capped per message at MAX_IO_CHARS) and records a tool-call-free reply as the turn's output via set_session_output, which ignores subagent/coder spans. The PR is clean across all four LLM review angles — no correctness, removed-behavior, cross-file, or convention defects. The sole panel finding is a minor test-gap: the middleware directory lacks tests for steering and enforcement (the "tool fencing" gate), and the PR only adds tests for trace_context.py. Verification confirmed the substance but corrected the file references: "tool_fencing.py" is actually enforcement.py, and no "turn_yielding.py" exists at head. No panel disagreement; no coverage gaps. Nothing blocking.

…ut, langfuse>=3.3.1 Review follow-ups (CodeRabbit): - ACP lets a tool_call arrive already completed/failed, and the follow-up tool_call_update is only recommended, so emit the end event there too. Otherwise its card never ends and its span is never recorded. - _tool_output_preview falls back to rawOutput when there are no content blocks. - Raise the langfuse floor to 3.3.1, where the agent/tool observation types (as_type) arrived. …all IO budget Adversarial review of #3587: - Incognito turns (ADR 0069 D3b) sent their full content to Langfuse. Prompt capture and trace export already skip them. trace_session(incognito=) now suppresses all content for the scope (io_allowed()), the middleware also reads request.state, the ACP client captures it at turn start for its reader task, and the message_preview metadata is dropped for incognito. - Generation and coder tool IO skipped redact(), unlike AuditMiddleware's tool spans. Now redacted, with tool-call args as a dict before stringifying. - The per-message cap still let one call ship ~800KB (the whole history rides every call). Added a per-call budget: system prompt plus the newest messages, with older ones counted in a marker. - A terminal-on-arrival tool call followed by the recommended update ended twice, producing a phantom tool:tool span and a duplicate UI end. Ended ids are now tracked per turn. - Dropped the deprecated set_trace_io. Langfuse shows the root span's IO as the trace's (verified live). Low-risk tracing enhancement (IO on generation observations, ACP tool-call span tracing, session output tracking). The one thing to fix before merge is the F841 lint violation in tests/test_acp_trace_span.py:118 (_fake → _), which will fail CI. Verification refuted the duplicate end-event finding in _trace_tool — the tool_call_update handler guards with tool_id not in self._turn_ended_tool_ids, so the second end is suppressed. No panel disagreement; the verifier simply corrected the evidence gap. No coverage gaps: the verifier annotated both findings (n=2).

Low-risk PR: three LLM finders (correctness, removed-behavior, cross-file) raised zero defects, and the protoPatch engine's four findings all target pre-existing code outside the diff's scope, so they were dropped. The single surviving finding is a minor CI-blocking lint issue (_fake unused variable in the new test file) that the verifier confirmed against head SHA. No panel disagreement. Verification changed nothing — the one finding was confirmed as-is. No gaps: the verifier annotated all 1 findings it was given.

Why
After tracing was turned on across the fleet, two problems showed up in Langfuse:
trace_sessionnever set IO. Generations deliberately carried only model, usage and cost (detail_in: gateway_project) and relied on the LiteLLM gateway's callback for the text. An agent on a native OAuth provider, like protoEngineer, never goes through the gateway, so its prompts and replies were logged nowhere. The session id was only in metadata, so the Sessions view didn't group anything.AcpAdapternordispatch_tappedopened a span. What
Turn and generation IO
trace_session(..., input=message)sets the input on the span and the trace. It also setssession_idand the agent tag throughlangfuse.propagate_attributes, so traces now have a realsessionId. Both chat drivers pass the message.TraceContextMiddlewarenow attaches each call's messages to its generation as input: the system prompt, then the conversation, with tool calls and tool results. The reply goes on as output. Each message is capped attracing.MAX_IO_CHARS(8k). The lead system prompt is about 50k tokens and is resent on every call; the full copy is still in prompt capture.tracing.set_session_outputrecords it as the turn's output. Last write wins. It ignores anything inside atrace_spanboundary (subagent, a2a or acp spans), using a new depth contextvar, so a subagent's closing line is never taken as the turn's answer.ACP coder spans
AcpClient.promptis the one seam every coder run crosses, which is also why the CLI coding-agent runs are invisible to telemetry — the board dispatches coders outside any turn, so the expensive half of the work records nothing #3015 telemetry row lives there. It now opens anacp:<name>agent span and records the run's outcome on it: output, state, stop_reason, tool_calls, the ACP session andERRORlevel on failure.tool:<title>child. They're parented explicitly (newtrace_tool_call(parent=)), because the reader task that sees tool events doesn't carry the span's context.Privacy and size (from an adversarial review round)
trace_session(incognito=)setsio_allowed()for the scope. The middleware also readsrequest.state["incognito"]. The ACP client captures the flag at turn start for its reader task.message_previewis dropped for incognito turns; that was an older leak.redact(), the same as AuditMiddleware's tool spans. Tool-call args are redacted as a dict, so key-based rules still apply. ACP coder tool spans and the coder's reply are redacted too.MAX_IO_CALL_CHARS(32k). The system prompt plus the newest messages that fit; older ones become an[N earlier messages omitted]marker. The per-message cap alone still let one call reach ~800 KB.tool:toolspan.set_trace_io.
