Replaces #8. Bumps @bufbuild/protobuf 2.12 → 2.16, @bufbuild/protovalidate 1.2 → 1.3 and @bufbuild/protoc-gen-es → 2.16 (src/gen is regenerated; only the header version stamps change). It also fixes the bugs that protovalidate 1.3 exposed.

These bugs already affect anyone installing 0.0.6, because the ^1.1.1 range resolves to protovalidate 1.3.

Fixes

  • Well-known event props are type-checked before validation. Protovalidate never checked types, and 1.3 no longer errors on ruled int32s either. A wrong-typed prop used to ship with that field silently dropped. Now the event is dropped, and the log names the bad field.
  • int64 fields:
    • A JS number is sent as an int. Before, it was dropped with an "unsupported scalar type INT64" warning.
    • A string is rejected instead of being parsed by BigInt(), which would turn " " into 0.
    • A number past 2^53 is rejected, because it may already be rounded.
  • Lone surrogates: a string containing one no longer drops the event. It goes out as U+FFFD, the same as for custom properties.
  • Durations:
    • They're sent as "90.5s", per the wire contract in options.proto. Seconds and nanos are added together first, so out-of-range or mixed-sign nanos still format correctly.
    • seconds: 0 works. A Duration's fields have implicit presence, so a numeric zero used to stay a number, and protovalidate threw on it, dropping every event under a second.
    • A Date, a number, or an object with unknown keys is rejected instead of going out as "0s".
    • Unset Duration fields no longer log a warning on every event.
  • identify() rejects traits that aren't plain objects, including arrays, Dates and Maps. Protovalidate 1.3 would send them as {} without logging anything.
  • Logs:
    • formatValidationError prints readable field paths instead of custom_properties,[object Object],….
    • A type error inside a Duration names its field (toPosition: seconds: …).
    • Unexpected errors keep their stack.
  • README: the feature_used example now uses that event's real fields.

Testing

  • 26 new tests, 79 in total. All pass with lint, build and make check-codegen, including on the oldest versions the ranges allow (protobuf 2.12.0, protovalidate 1.1.1).
  • 24 of the new tests fail against main. The other two check that valid input still goes through: a lone surrogate, and object traits reaching the RPC.
  • Before the review fixes, the built SDK ran end to end on Node 18.20.8 and 20.19.5. The fixes add no dependencies and no newer APIs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid identify() traits now produce a clear error without causing the call to throw.
    • Event tracking now checks property types and reports field-specific errors for invalid values. It also handles duration values and integer conversions more consistently.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the Quick start example to use featureId when tracking the feature_used event.

Also bumps protoc-gen-es to 2.16.0 and regenerates src/gen, which only changes the version stamp in each header.
Neither create() nor protovalidate checks value types, and protovalidate 1.3 no longer errors on a ruled int32 in CEL either, so a wrong-typed prop was silently dropped from the event. A checked reflect set now drops the event, and the log names the field. Strings bypass it: a lone surrogate is kept as for any other property, and an int64 string is rejected rather than parsed by BigInt().

Durations are sent as "90.5s" per options.proto instead of being dropped, and an unset one no longer warns on every event. formatValidationError prints readable field paths.
protovalidate 1.3 no longer walks a Struct that has no rules, so a string or array was sent as empty traits with no log.

Walkthrough

The SDK now rejects invalid identify() traits and checks well-known event field types before validation. Event conversion handles Duration values, and the Quick start example uses featureId for feature_used.

Changes

Identify traits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate identify traits
src/pug.ts, src/pug.test.ts
identify() logs an error and returns when non-null traits are not an object or are an array. A test checks string-valued traits and the logged error.

Well-known event conversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Check reflected field types
src/track.ts, src/track.test.ts
Well-known event fields are checked through protobuf reflection before validation. Invalid values drop the event, and errors identify the field when available. Tests cover invalid field values and int64 conversion.
Map known event properties
src/track.ts, src/track.test.ts, README.md
Set Duration fields are formatted as strings; other message fields are skipped. Tests cover Duration formatting, unset Duration, and lone-surrogate strings. The Quick start example uses featureId.

official @bufbuild/protobuf v2.16 create google.protobuf.Struct JsonObject plain object behavior

💡 Result:

In **`@bufbuild/protobuf` v2.16.0**, `create()` accepts a plain JavaScript object for a `google.protobuf.Struct` field and leaves it as-is; it does **not** convert that object into a `Struct` message. The implementation explicitly skips message conversion for `google.protobuf.Struct` fields (except when nested inside `google.protobuf.Value`). ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bufbuild/protobuf-es/v2.16.0/packages/protobuf/src/create.ts))

```ts
const msg = create(MyMessageSchema, {
  struct: { text: "abc", number: 123 },
});
```

This is the intended representation: generated fields of type `google.protobuf.Struct` use `JsonObject`, and Buf documents assigning plain values directly. ([protobufes.com](https://protobufes.com/reference/well-known-types/?utm_source=openai))

If you mean creating a **top-level `Struct` message** with `create(StructSchema, ...)`, the cited implementation doesn’t establish that passing the raw object as the initializer is supported. The documented plain-object behavior is for a `Struct` **field**.

Reject non-plain object traits before building the request.

Date, Map, and class instances pass the current guard. create(IdentifyRequestSchema, ...) accepts the value for the google.protobuf.Struct field without enforcing a plain-object prototype. Reject these values before constructing the request.

Comment thread src/track.ts
A Date, Map or class instance got past the array check and went out as empty traits, like the string the guard was added for. A test now also checks that object traits reach the RPC.
A Duration's fields have implicit presence, so isSet() treated a numeric `seconds: 0` as unset and never converted it to a bigint. protovalidate then threw on it, dropping every event with a position under a second. checkTypes now checks implicit-presence fields whether or not isSet() reports them.

formatDuration adds seconds and nanos together first, so out-of-range or mixed-sign nanos no longer produce "2.-5s" or "0.15s". create() turned a Date, or an object with unknown keys, in a Duration field into "0s"; those values are now rejected. A type error inside a Duration names its field, and unexpected errors are logged with their stack again.
A number that large may already be rounded, and the checked set would send the rounded value as an exact bigint.

Ship the protovalidate 1.3 fixes from #16 and the proto sync from #17. 0.0.6's
`^1.1.1` range already resolves to protovalidate 1.3, which silently drops
wrong-typed well-known props and sends non-object identify() traits as `{}`.

A wrong-typed well-known prop now drops the whole event with a log naming the
field, and track() drops a distinctId with the reserved `cookieless-` prefix.
#17 also adds `activity.profileSessions`, `includeBots` on reads, and map
insights.
