I was able to reproduce the duplicated formatter entries on Windows 11 with VS Code 1.135.0 and Language Support for Java 1.55.0, while the Java project was still being opened.
With the same Java extension version on VS Code 1.136.1, I could no longer reproduce the issue. Could you please update VS Code to the latest version and confirm whether the duplicated entries still appear?
something like that was happening to me, duplicated error / warning reports, duplicated suggestions and two duplicate processes called "Open JDK Plantaform Binary" on task manager. Try going back to version 1.55 of the extension, it worked for me
Could you please update VS Code to the latest version and confirm whether the duplicated entries still appear?
I usually have latest versions. My current env is:
VSCode version: 1.136.1 (user setup)
Java extension version: 1.56.0 (updated last week)
I no longer see the error (it only happened to me the day I reported it). However, I'm not sure if its a VSCode (regression) issue, or something intermittent (race condition/timeout issue). In my case, I usually work with multi-root workspaces (the one with java have 14 projects).
PS: I was also migrating from java 21 to java 25. At that time, I had projects running both (not sure if this is relevant). I currently have everything migrated to Java 25
Given that I no longer see the issue (not able to replicate), if you want I can close the issue.
No duplicate (that I remember). However, after pressing "increase Memory" and update vscode (pressing the update button), the duplicate formatters are still present.
I just restarted Windows, updated + restarted VSCode and Clean Java Language Sserver workspace (just in case), and I'm having the same issue (duplicate formatters registred. The logs ar similar as yesterday.
Is it OK to see 2 registrations during VSCode startup?
Is it expected to see ResponseErrorException: Unhandled method workspace/executeClientCommand?
That OOM notification was showing up for me too, check if there are no duplicated error / warning reports
After playing with it fow a while, I think I now understand your comment. Formatters are not the only thing duplicated. Everything seems to be duplicated after an OOM; followed by a "self-healing" (autorestart) of the extension. When this happens, everything that is registered by the extension during startup is being registered again or executed twice.
Examples:
Parameter name:
Autocomplete options:
Formatters:
Should I create a new issue? Root cause might be related to #4505, but the reported issue is different there.

Interestingly enough, I got the same behaviour today.
A few things I noticed:
There seems to be a new VSCode update (I got the update button on the top (title bar)
I'm seeing an OOM notification
This happened when trying to format a .java code before taking any action on the OOM notification
Maybe it tried to load/recover again without realizing that there were already some things configured?

I currently see the following in the logs:
Language support for Java
Language support for Java (syntax)

yeah i suggest you to not click that button to increase memory, if you want to, you can configure the memory limit in .vscode/setting.json
