Change

Images now open up to the GPU's own texture limit (maxTextureDimension2D, usually 16,384 pixels per side on desktop GPUs) instead of WebGPU's default 8,192. That limit cut off common 45–61 MP cameras by a few hundred pixels: Nikon D850, Z7 II, Sony A7R IV, A1, Canon 5DS, and Fujifilm GFX 50S. A larger image fails with "This device opens images up to 16,384 pixels per side; this one is 23,296 × 17,472."

  • The device requests the adapter's maxTextureDimension2D. Reading it from device.limits costs nothing at load time.
  • PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, HEIC, and TIFF are checked from their header with image-size (MIT, an 11 KB lazy chunk) before decoding. SVG, and any header that couldn't be read, are checked once decoded, before upload.
  • RAW is left to raw-webgpu, which rejects a sensor larger than the device limit before uploading it.

Verification

  • bun run check, bun run build, bun run test, and bun run test:browser tests/loaders.e2e.ts pass. The e2e test reads the adapter's limit and opens a PNG and an SVG one pixel over it.
  • On an Apple M4 Pro (limit 16,384), these opened and rendered correctly with load times of 0.7–7.4 s: Nikon D850, Canon 5DS, Fujifilm GFX 50S, Sony A7R IV, Sony A1, Leica Q2, Sigma fp L, Sony RX1R III, and Fujifilm GFX100 II (11,662 × 8,746, 4.5 s).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Oversized images now fail to open with an error that reports the GPU’s per-side size limit and the image dimensions. Most image formats are checked before decoding.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that the minimum supported texture dimension is 8,192 pixels per side, with a typical limit of 16,384.

Browser formats, HEIC, and TIFF are checked from their header before
decoding; SVG at its raster size; RAW once LibRaw has decoded it. The
device now takes the adapter's texture limit, so an oversized RAW reaches
OpenLight's check instead of failing on WebGPU's default limit.

🔴 GPU adapter failures blank the page

When requestAdapter() rejects, gpuOptions() prevents React from mounting. GpuBoundary never renders, so users see a blank page instead of the WebGPU error.

Learn more

The root render is suspended on a promise before React has mounted. The GPU fallback exists inside GpuBoundary, so it cannot catch an adapter request that rejects outside the component tree. A failed adapter initialization can therefore leave both the editor and its fallback absent.

Example: On a browser where navigator.gpu.requestAdapter() rejects because GPU initialization fails, await gpuOptions() rejects and createRoot(root).render(...) is never called. The previous tree mounted and could show the GPU failure screen.

Recommended fix: Move adapter acquisition into the provider or a component covered by GpuBoundary, and handle rejected adapter requests there. Keep the error fallback mounted even when preparing device limits fails.

🔴 Large images exhaust memory before rejection

For a large file, declaredSize() copies every byte before checking its dimensions. The copy can exhaust browser memory before an oversized image receives its size error.

Learn more

The size check runs before decoding, but file.arrayBuffer() still materializes the entire encoded image in memory. Browsers already hold the File, and large uncompressed images can consume hundreds of megabytes before any pixel decoding. This preflight can fail from memory pressure before the code reads the small header that declares an oversized image.

Example: An illustrative uncompressed 10,000 × 10,000 RGBA TIFF is roughly 400 MB. Checking its dimensions first copies roughly 400 MB into a buffer, even though its TIFF directory can identify its dimensions without loading the full image; the tab can fail before reporting 10,000 × 10,000.

Recommended fix: Parse dimensions from bounded file.slice(...).arrayBuffer() reads, expanding the range only for formats whose header needs more bytes. Avoid allocating a complete second copy solely for dimension validation.

17-25: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Avoid a second full-file allocation during header checks.

sized calls checkHeader(file) before decoding. For HEIC, decodeHeic then calls file.arrayBuffer() again, so the header check and decoder each materialize the complete file. Use a format-aware metadata read that avoids this duplicate allocation. Do not use a fixed-size slice unless the fallback preserves formats whose metadata occurs later in the file.

The device already takes the adapter's maxTextureDimension2D, usually
16,384 pixels, so the check now reads it from the device rather than a
constant. Headers are still checked before decoding; SVG and unreadable
headers are checked once decoded. RAW is left to raw-webgpu, which
rejects a sensor beyond the device limit before uploading it.

Devin Review found 3 new potential issues.

🐛 2 issues in files not directly in the diff

🐛 Oversized SVGs rasterize before rejection

For an oversized SVG, decodeSvg creates and draws its full canvas before the size check. Large images can exhaust memory or fail during rasterization instead of reporting their dimensions.

⚠️ Oversized RAW files lose dimension errors

When a RAW source exceeds the GPU limit, decodeRaw passes its size directly to target. Texture creation fails without the image dimensions, so the open error cannot identify the offending size.

🟡 Rejected bitmaps remain open after decoding

When checkSize rejects a decoded SVG bitmap, pixelFormat skips uploadDecoded, which closes decoded bitmaps. Repeated failed opens retain large bitmap resources until garbage collection.

Learn more

pixelFormat handles both ImageBitmap outputs from SVG/native decoders and video frames from HEIC. It checks dimensions after decoding but before uploadDecoded, which normally closes those resources. When the dimension check throws, no code closes the bitmap or frames. Repeated oversized SVG opens thus leave their decoded bitmap resources pending garbage collection.

Example: Opening an SVG that rasterizes to 16,385 × 10 pixels on a 16,384-pixel GPU transfers it to an ImageBitmap, then rejects it without calling ImageBitmap.close().

Recommended fix: Ensure the dimension check runs before decoding where possible; for paths checked after decoding, close an ImageBitmap or all VideoFrame tiles on any validation failure.

🟡 Minor · Pass the sampled adapter to GpuProvider. · main.tsx:48-56

Pass the sampled adapter to GpuProvider.

gpuOptions() reads the limit from one adapter but returns only requiredLimits. GpuProvider forwards these options to vgpu.init(), which requests another adapter when adapter is absent. If that adapter has a lower limit, device creation can fail. InitOptions.adapter already accepts the sampled adapter, so this is a localized fix.
