Change

Browser tests now check what a person checks: the image changes the right way, undo restores it, export matches. They no longer compare exact bytes, golden constants, screenshot buffers, or SVG strings. They pass on any GPU, and tests that only differed by a mode or shared a setup run together.

  • expectNear/expectPixels compare colors with a tolerance. Image content is read from the export; the preview is read only for overlays, compare, clipping, and the view.
  • Healing and Remove are judged by outcome (the spot is gone, the edge stays, HDR and alpha survive) instead of matching a fresh solve.
  • The tone ramp checks direction, clipping, smoothness, and the linear midpoint instead of an exact step bound.
  • Loader, RAW, TIFF, and sample-photo tests become formats.e2e.ts. The sample JPEG is now checked by pixels.
  • Merged tests: range picker 8→2, inpaint 8→3, paint 12→7, and others.
  • Steps already covered by Bun tests were dropped; each is cited in its commit.
  • The 1.5 s sleep in gpu-stats is gone.
  • AGENTS.md asks browser tests to pass on any GPU.

  • Coverage: V8 JS coverage of src/ over the suite is 23,521 lines before and 23,498 after.
    • The 23-line difference is draft recovery and a hidden heal layer. Coverage can't see code that runs after a reload, but draft.e2e.ts still fails when recovery breaks (checked by breaking it). heal.test.ts:240 covers the hidden heal layer.
  • The remaining L4 failures all read the on-screen canvas. On Modal the WebGPU canvas never reaches the screenshot (always the background color), while exports are correct. That's Modal's gVisor, not the app. The infra failure is requestAdapter() returned null.
  • Not run: HEIC skips on Linux (no HEVC decoder in Playwright's Chromium), and nothing was run on macOS.
  • bun run check, bun run build, and bun run test pass.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates browser-test guidance and comparison helpers, revises image assertions to tolerate rendering differences, and adds, consolidates, or removes end-to-end and GPU test coverage across editing, retouching, image formats, and tool interactions.

Changes: Browser test suite

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared comparison helpers and rendering assertions
AGENTS.md, tests/fixtures.ts, tests/images.ts, tests/clarity.e2e.ts, tests/color-mixer.e2e.ts, tests/fill.e2e.ts, tests/heic.e2e.ts, tests/grain.e2e.ts, tests/rendering.e2e.ts, tests/vignette.e2e.ts, tests/draft.e2e.ts, tests/scene-file.e2e.ts
Guidance and shared helpers support tolerant pixel checks. Rendering tests revise image comparisons, histogram checks, and GPU-deviation measurements.
Canvas and image-editing workflows
tests/brush*.e2e.ts, tests/crop.e2e.ts, tests/editing.e2e.ts
Brush, crop, and editing tests update gesture, navigation, undo, and export assertions. Several checks use tone categories or tolerant pixel comparisons.
Layers, masks, paint, and LUT workflows
tests/layers.e2e.ts, tests/paint.e2e.ts, tests/mask-range.e2e.ts, tests/lut.e2e.ts
Tests revise image comparisons and update coverage for mask composition, paint settling, and LUT undo, redo, and reload behavior.
Retouch and GPU rendering checks
tests/gpu-stats.e2e.ts, tests/heal*.e2e.ts, tests/inpaint*.e2e.ts, tests/perspective-gpu.ts
Retouch tests consolidate GPU cases and update image-error measurements. Other assertions cover allocation counts, pixel samples, and interaction state.
Image loading and format coverage
tests/assistant.e2e.ts, tests/auto-white-balance.e2e.ts, tests/formats.e2e.ts, tests/loaders.e2e.ts, tests/raw.e2e.ts, tests/start.e2e.ts, tests/tiff.e2e.ts
Format tests cover blank canvases, JPEG, TIFF, RAW, and SVG/XMP. They also cover failed opens and exports while another image opens. Several separate loader and format test files are removed.
Picker and keyboard interactions
tests/range-picker.e2e.ts, tests/tool-shortcuts.e2e.ts
Picker tests cover delayed reads, selection changes, failed reads, and history state. Shortcut tests combine brush, tool-switching, and retouch behavior.

Only browser tests change, so the product is unaffected. A few assertions can now miss regressions they used to catch, and one exact pixel check may still fail on some GPUs. These are small follow-ups.

Use the shared expectPixels helper instead of expectSamples.

expectSamples does the same thing as expectPixels in tests/fixtures.ts:35-44. Both check the array length, then call expectNear on each pixel. Import expectPixels and pass tolerance 1, or 3 at Line 53.

Restore a brightness check for the gray patch.

The new assertion accepts any uniform shade, including black. The removed near-79 check would reject that incorrect export. Keep the channel-similarity check, and compare the RGB values with the expected brightness using a GPU-tolerant range.

Wait for the histogram update after hiding the mask.

The visibility change notifies the renderer, but the histogram updates its SVG points only after an asynchronous GPU read. The assertion can therefore read the previous brighter values and pass before the post-click read completes. Wait for the post-click render/read cycle before comparing the histogram.

Make the masked check after undo tolerant too.

Line 185 still compares exported samples to masked with toEqual. The lines around it now use tolerance 1. Exported pixels are equal on one GPU only because they come from the same renderer. Undo can also re-render through a different path, so a rounding difference of 1 can fail this check on another GPU. That conflicts with the "pass on any GPU" goal. Use expectPixels(await samples(), masked, 1).

Based on learnings: "Check pixels as a person would, with expectNear... rather than exact bytes."
