Count label clicks once in inline events - #133
Conversation
A click on a label makes the browser dispatch a second click on the labelled control. Both bubbled to the inline event listener, so one click on a label inside a data-simple-event element sent the event twice. After a label click sends an inline event, remember the label's control and skip the next click whose composed path contains it. The label is the first label in event.composedPath(), so labels in open shadow roots, slotted label text and shadow-DOM components inside labels are handled too. The control is not remembered when the click was on or inside it, because browsers don't forward those clicks. A zero-delay timeout clears it for label clicks the browser doesn't forward, such as cancelled ones. Submit events are never skipped, and independent clicks are counted as before. When the label and its control resolve to different tagged elements, the tag of the clicked label wins, matching the nearest-tag rule for other clicks. Untagged labels still send the control's event. If a label listener calls

this is way to overenginered. if it can be fixed by a simple check, do it. otherwise. don't make this important.

Simplified to one check in 9647503: no state, timer or composed-path search anymore. A label click is ignored when its control is inside the same tagged element, since the browser clicks the control right after. latest.js went from +107 B to +64 B gzip. One test, passing (57 total), and Chrome, Firefox and WebKit send one event per label click.

Replaced the label check in c15f335 with a generic rule: a tagged element sends at most one click event per task (one variable and a zero-delay timeout, +29 B gzip). No element types are listed. Label clicks, shadow DOM and custom controls send one event, and separate visitor clicks still count.

Done in 9647503. The inline event change is now 4 lines and one test.
Drop the remembered control, timer and composed path search. Ignore a label click when its control is inside the same tagged element: the browser clicks the control right after, and that click is counted. The closest() call matches interactive elements first, so clicks on the control itself or on a link or button inside the label still count. A tagged label whose control sits outside the label but inside another tagged ancestor still sends two events for one click: with <div><label for="y">Y</label><input id="y" type="checkbox"></div> the label click sends lbl (control not contained in the label) and the forwarded control click then sends outer. Comparing the control's own nearest tagged ancestor with element instead of using element.contains would cover it, otherwise it is worth adding to the limitations list in the description next to the shadow-root case.

Confirmed. This happens when the label click resolves to a tagged element that doesn't contain the control, but the control is inside another tagged element. Covering it needs a second walk from the control to its tagged ancestor. The goal for this PR is the smallest fix for the common case, so I left it out and listed it under the limitations in the description.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Suppress label clicks when the control uses a different nested tag.
For <div data-simple-event="outer"><label><span data-simple-event="caption">Text</span><input data-simple-event="control"></label></div>, clicking the span selects caption as element. The input is outside that span, so this guard sends caption; label activation then clicks the input and sends control. One interaction still produces two events. Check whether the control click will reach a tagged ancestor before sending the label click, and add this nested-tag case to the test. The HTML Standard describes label activation of an associated control. (html.spec.whatwg.org)

@simpleanalytics-agent Thanks for the guidance. I accept this as a documented limitation of the minimal fix in #133. No further change is needed for this PR.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for the nested-tag case?

Learning: In simpleanalytics/scripts PR #133, the author intentionally limits label-click deduplication in src/default.js to the common case where the tracked element contains the associated control, to minimize script size. Duplicate events from separate nested tags are an accepted, documented limitation of this PR, not a required scope extension.

Replace the label and element-type check with a simpler rule: a tagged element sends at most one click event per task. The browser dispatches a label's forwarded control click in the same task as the label click, so it is skipped, while separate visitor clicks run in separate tasks and still count. This also covers labels in shadow DOM and custom controls, and cancelled or disabled labels still send their event. Form submissions are not affected.
