Summary

Fixes #57

Time on page is now sent reliably on mobile and after back/forward cache restores, with a small script size increase. Research and device results are in #57 (comment).

Merge order: simpleanalytics/queue#104 must be deployed first. This script can send a page view's duration more than once, and the current queue keeps whichever update it processes last.

Changes in src/default.js:

  • Only visible time counts. One accumulator pauses while the page is hidden. Values are rounded down.
  • The cumulative value is sent on every visibilitychange → hidden (listener on document). Leaving, reloading and entering the back/forward cache all make the page hidden too, so there's no pagehide listener and only one append per leave.
  • Every page view (SPA, hash, manual sa_pageview) closes the previous page view and starts its own counters.
  • Appends without values are no longer sent (the queue drops them).
  • The beacon try/catch is removed. A beacon that can't be sent wouldn't arrive any other way.
  • New opt-in data-pings="5,60" / sa_settings.pings = [5, 60] sends the same cumulative value when visible time passes each threshold. There is no default.

Deliberately not covered, to keep the script small:

  • Old browsers that don't fire visibilitychange on navigation (Safari before 14.1) lose those durations.
  • No GIF fallback when sendBeacon returns false (only happens when 64 KB of beacons are already in flight).

Before/after for existing installations:

Situation Before After
Mobile home, app switch or screen lock, then the browser is killed nothing sent visible time at the hide (0/11 → 11/11 on real iOS/Android devices)
Back/forward cache restore, then leave second value is an increment that overwrites the first (6 → 4 s) cumulative (5 → 9 s)
Firefox tab close first pagehide listener is cut off, 1/12 delivered we don't use pagehide; the hidden send runs normally
Page closed while hidden hidden time counted (8 s for 3 s visible) 3 s
Page opened in a background tab null / NaN visible time
SPA page view after scrolling inherits previous scroll (100) own scroll (35)
Manual sa_pageview page views only the last one gets a duration (the sum) each gets its own
Rounding Math.round Math.floor (stored values are about 0.5 s lower on average)
Leave with 0 s and no scroll, and light.js on every page view empty append request no request

Expected effect on the dashboard: duration coverage on mobile goes up. The desktop long tail shrinks because hidden time is no longer counted. Medians can shift.

Size compared with v12 (same build, gzip -9, brotli 11):

File Minified Gzip Brotli
latest.js +177 B +69 B +67 B
light.js −209 B −104 B −92 B

dist/ is not included.

Security implications

No security impact

Testing

  • pnpm run test:unit: 56 passing. The beacon test now hides the page instead of firing pagehide, the test for the removed throw fallback is gone, and one new test covers hide → return → hide (sends 3 s, then 5 s).
  • Local Chrome 155 scenario runs of this branch: close, hide then kill, hide then close, hide/show/close, bfcache, SPA, SPA after hidden, hidden at load, scroll per SPA page, manual page views, reload, prerender, repeated app switches then kill, long hide then kill, and data-pings="60,5". Every scenario stores the expected values with one append per leave. On v12, kills send nothing, bfcache sends 2 then 3 instead of 5, and a page opened in a background tab sends null/NaN.
  • An earlier version of the same logic (sending on hide) was tested on BrowserStack real devices: iOS 18, 26 and 27 Safari, Chrome on iOS 27, Pixel and Galaxy Chrome, Samsung Internet. Every device fired the hide on home, screen lock, navigation and back/forward cache.
  • The full BrowserStack matrix is left to CI.

Count only visible time and send the cumulative value on every hide and
on pagehide, so durations survive mobile app switches, screen locks and
browser kills, back/forward cache restores no longer send increments, and
Firefox tab closes are no longer lost. Every page view, including manual
ones, closes the previous one. Optional data-pings sends the same value
at visible-time thresholds.

Writing position() back into scrolled makes a bad reading permanent: when height is 0 (zero-height document/iframe) position() returns NaN, and Math.max(0, NaN, validValue) stays NaN for the rest of the page view, so every later append reports null instead of the real depth. Verified against this build — hide at a zero-height layout then hide again at a measurable 40% layout gives [{dur:3,scrolled:null},{dur:8,scrolled:null}], where the second should be 40. Since the load/scroll listener already keeps the max, dropping the write-back is enough; alternatively make position() never return NaN:

Suggested change
append.scrolled = scrolled = Math.max(0, scrolled, position());
append.scrolled = Math.max(0, scrolled, position());

Fixed in 1cd12c6: position() is no longer written back into scrolled. Verified with the jsdom build: hide at a zero-height layout, then hide again at 40 % now sends [{duration: 3, scrolled: null}, {duration: 8, scrolled: 40}] (was null twice). Chrome spa-scroll, bfcache, hide-show-close and spa scenarios still send the same values, and pnpm run test:unit passes (57).

The || push branch is dead: the only push caller is sendOnLeave("" + payload.page_id, trueVar) in sendPageView, and the very next statement there is sentDuration = sentScrolled = 0, so these assignments can never be observed. Dropping it saves bytes and removes a comment that describes behaviour that does not happen.

Agreed, removed in 1cd12c6: sendPageView resets both values right after the push send, so only a queued beacon sets the watermark now. Unit tests pass (57).

Normally we send the _time on page_ once, when a visitor leaves the page. Some browsers never get the chance to send it. On iOS, closing a tab from the tab switcher fires no event at all, and on mobile the operating system can kill the browser while the page is in the background. In those cases we have no duration for that page view.

With `pings` you can send the time on page earlier, at moments you pick yourself. Each ping sends the visible time so far, so even if the page is killed later, you keep a lower bound instead of nothing.

This is an opt-in setting. Without it, nothing changes for your installation.

## `pings`

The value is a list of thresholds in **seconds of visible time**. A ping fires when a visitor has had the page visible for that many seconds:

```html
<script
  data-pings="5"
  src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"
></script>
Comma separated
You can give multiple thresholds, separated by a comma:
<script
  data-pings="5,60"
  src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"
></script>
With 5,60 we send the time on page after 5 seconds of visible time, again after 60 seconds, and once more when the visitor leaves. 5,60 works well for sites with long articles.
Via script settings
You can also set it with script settings, as a string or an array:
<script>
  window.sa_settings = { pings: [5, 60] };
</script>
<script src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"></script>
Good to know
  • Only visible time counts. Time while the tab is in the background, while the screen is locked, or while the page sits in the back/forward cache does not move a visitor towards the next threshold.
  • Thresholds are per page view. In a single-page app, every page view starts counting from zero again.
  • Each threshold fires at most once per page view, so data-pings="5,60" adds at most two extra requests per page view.
  • Every ping sends the running total, not the time since the previous ping. We never lower a stored duration, so a later value simply replaces an earlier one.
  • We recommend starting at 5. The dashboard excludes durations under 5 seconds from the time on page metric, so a lower threshold does not add anything to that number. See time on page explained.
### What we count
We only count the time a page is actually visible. The timer pauses when:
- the visitor switches to another tab or another app
- the device screen is locked
- the page is stored in the browser's back/forward cache (and resumes when the visitor comes back to it)
We round the result down to whole seconds, so a stored _time on page_ is always a lower bound of the real visible time.
We send the time on page whenever the page becomes hidden, not only when it is closed. That is the only moment many mobile browsers give us before the operating system kills them. Because we send the running total every time, a later value can only raise a stored duration, never lower it.
Some page views still end without any event. Closing a tab from the iOS tab switcher is the clearest example. If you want a duration for those as well, you can enable [pings](/pings) to send the running total at thresholds you choose.
SDLC label: change: needs review because The tracker now sends multiple cumulative duration and scroll updates per page view, and the deployed queue overwrites duration_seconds with whichever update it processes last, so stored customer durations can be lowered until simpleanalytics/queue#104 is deployed first; this also roughly doubles append traffic into the queue and Elasticsearch update path and changes stored time-on-page values for all existing installations.
Don't write position() back into the scroll maximum, so a NaN reading on a
zero-height layout can't stick for the rest of the page view, and drop the
unobservable push branch of the sent watermark.
The invalid reading is out of scrolled but not out of the watermark: a zero-height layout still makes position() return NaN, so the first append latches sentScrolled = NaN and every later append.scrolled > sentScrolled is false, silently dropping scroll-only appends for the rest of the page view (duration-triggered ones still carry the right depth, which is why the fix looked complete).
Suggested change
sentScrolled = append.scrolled;
sentScrolled = append.scrolled || 0;
Verified on the jsdom build with the clock frozen so only scrolled changes: hide at a zero-height layout, then make the layout measurable and scroll to 100 % — current head sends [{duration: 3, scrolled: null}], with this line it sends [{duration: 3, scrolled: null}, {duration: 3, scrolled: 100}]. pnpm run test:unit stays at 57 passing. Coercing at line 707 instead (position() || 0) would also keep "scrolled": null out of the payload.
Resolved by 74ad260, which removed the sentDuration/sentScrolled watermark entirely. Leaving a page also makes it hidden, so we only send on visibilitychange and there is no second event to skip.
📝 Walkthrough
Page duration now counts visible time. Configured pings schedule append requests while a page exists and the document is visible. Visibility changes and new page views update duration and scroll progress. Append requests use sendBeacon or image sending based on request type and browser support.
Changes: Page duration tracking
Layer / File(s) Summary
Visible-time accounting and append requests
src/default.js
Duration tracking accumulates visible time and schedules configured pings. Append requests are skipped when duration and scroll progress are both zero or absent. Push requests and browsers without sendBeacon use image sending; other requests call sendBeacon directly.
Page-view transitions and validation
src/default.js, test/unit/pageview.test.js
Each new page view finishes the preceding view and resets per-page duration and scroll progress. Tests cover visible-time accumulation and page-view events. The sendBeacon-failure fallback test was removed.
Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 36bec
The change is bounded to analytics collection and delivery. Page-view identities and metric controls remain in place. The main design risk is deployment compatibility: repeated duration updates require a compatible downstream consumer, whose implementation and deployment state were not verified.
Retained concerns
  • Medium · architecture · inferred: Repeated cumulative appends introduce an order-sensitive producer/consumer contract. If the deployed consumer retains the last processed value without protecting against older updates, reordered delivery can replace a newer page total with an older one. The declared queue#104 prerequisite is relevant counterevidence, but its implementation, deployment, and rollback compatibility remain unverified. This is a conditional rollout and persisted-data consistency concern, not a demonstrated security exploit.
Explanation
Issue #57 is open and directly linked, but it provides no specific coding acceptance criteria. The PR implements beacon-related behavior in src/default.js: it sends visible duration on visibilitychange, removes the pagehide dependency and beacon exception fallback, skips empty appends, resets counters per page view, and supports opt-in ping thresholds. The PR evidence also reports unit coverage for cumulative duration across hide and return. No concrete unmet coding requirement is established.
Leaving a page also makes it hidden, so the pagehide listener, the
duplicate-send guard, the back/forward cache fallback and the beacon
try/catch are no longer needed. Old browsers that don't fire
visibilitychange on navigation lose those durations; this keeps the
script small. Appends without values are not sent.
Add the two-page-view counter-reset test.
The [2] expectation is correct. appends(dom) collects only beacon durations. sa_pageview("/second") finishes the first view through the push/image path, so that append is not included. The later hidden event records only the second view after its counters reset.
Dropping the upper bound makes an out-of-range ping value flood the API instead of being ignored: a delay above 2^31−1 ms overflows setTimeout and fires immediately, so sendOnLeave() → schedulePing() re-arms instantly for the rest of the page view. Verified on this build with data-pings="3600000" (a plausible seconds/ms mix-up): 1122 append beacons in 2.2 s and still climbing; with the bound restored it sends none and data-pings="1" keeps working (56 unit tests pass).
Without the !pages guard, a hide before any page view was sent still queues an append for a page view that never existed, and now that happens on every hide instead of only on leave. Verified on this build: with data-ignore-pages="/" a hide after 7 s sends {"type":"append","original_id":"<unused uuid>","duration":7,...}, same with data-auto-collect="false" before the first sa_pageview; restoring the guard sends nothing there and keeps the 56 unit tests passing.
Agreed, restored in 36bec96. Verified on the jsdom build: a hide on a page excluded with ignorePages: ["/"] now sends 0 beacons. pnpm run test:unit: 56 passing.
A ping value too large for setTimeout fired immediately and rescheduled
itself in a loop, and ignored pages or manual mode sent an append for a
page view that was never sent on every hide.
