Signature verification. HomeCloud releases from v0.5.0 on publish checksums.txt.sigstore.json, a Sigstore bundle made by keyless signing in the release workflow. The action now verifies it before trusting checksums.txt:

cosign verify-blob checksums.txt --bundle checksums.txt.sigstore.json \
  --certificate-identity https://github.com/solinode/homecloud/.github/workflows/release.yml@refs/tags/<tag> \
  --certificate-oidc-issuer https://token.actions.githubusercontent.com
  • latest is resolved to its tag first (from the /releases/latest redirect), so the identity is exact and every file comes from the same release.
  • A v0.5.0+ release without a bundle fails the step. Releases before v0.5.0 are unsigned and keep the checksum-only check, as before.
  • cosign: the runner's own if it is on PATH (e.g. from sigstore/cosign-installer), otherwise cosign v3.1.3 is downloaded from its GitHub release and checked against SHA-256s pinned in setup.sh. This is a JavaScript action (for the post step), so it cannot call sigstore/cosign-installer itself.
  • New input verify-signature (default true); false checks the checksum only, e.g. on runners that cannot reach Sigstore.
  • HC_INSTALL_ONLY=1 stops setup.sh after the install, for tests. test.yml gets an install matrix: latest and v0.5.0 (signed), v0.4.1 (unsigned), v0.5.0 with the check off. test/inputs.sh covers the new input.

README. The Terraform example set skip_credentials_validation and skip_requesting_account_id, which are not needed (HomeCloud implements STS); it now sets only s3_use_path_style, matching the mirror in solinode/homecloud integrations/github-action. The inputs table and the intro list cover the signature check, and a new Release verification section explains it.

Tested locally (macOS arm64): v0.5.0 verifies with the downloaded cosign; v0.4.1 installs with the checksum only; latest with verify-signature=false skips the check; a tampered checksums.txt fails cosign verify-blob; bash test/inputs.sh passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Installations now verify release signatures by default before trusting checksums. Signature verification can be disabled to use checksum-only verification.
    • Older unsigned releases continue to use checksum verification.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Release downloads now use the resolved version-specific release, including when latest is selected.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance for release verification and HomeCloud’s Terraform credential validation support.

Releases from v0.5.0 on publish checksums.txt.sigstore.json. When it exists,
the action verifies it with cosign against the release workflow's identity at
the release tag before trusting checksums.txt, and fails if a v0.5.0+ release
has no bundle. Releases before v0.5.0 keep the checksum-only check. cosign is
taken from PATH, or v3.1.3 is downloaded and checked against a pinned SHA-256
(a JavaScript action cannot call sigstore/cosign-installer). "latest" is
resolved to its tag so the identity names the exact release. New input
verify-signature (default true) turns the check off.

The Terraform example no longer sets skip_credentials_validation and
skip_requesting_account_id: HomeCloud implements STS.

📝 Walkthrough

The action adds optional Sigstore verification for release checksums, with verification enabled by default. The installer resolves release tags, verifies signed releases, and checks archive checksums. The workflow tests installation cases. The README also updates Terraform provider guidance.

Changes: Release Verification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Verification input and validation
action.yml, main.js, setup.sh, test/inputs.sh, README.md
The action adds verify-signature, defaults it to true, and passes it to setup.sh. The script accepts case-insensitive true or false. Tests cover accepted and rejected values, and the README documents the input.
Release resolution and signature checks
setup.sh, README.md
The installer resolves latest to a release tag and uses version-specific release URLs. For signed releases, it verifies the Sigstore bundle with cosign before checking the archive against checksums.txt. The README describes the release verification behavior.
Install-only verification matrix
setup.sh, .github/workflows/test.yml
The installer can exit after installation and version reporting. The workflow exercises signed and unsigned versions with verification enabled and disabled, then checks the expected status message and checksum result.

Terraform Provider Guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Terraform provider configuration
README.md
The README states that HomeCloud implements STS and removes the provider settings that skipped credential validation and account-ID requests. It retains s3_use_path_style = true.

The only open item is a small CI hardening fix: disable credential persistence on the new install job's checkout step. It does not affect the action's runtime behavior.
