# Microsoft Whiteboard retirement evidence

The site and the launch campaign state that Microsoft retires its standalone Whiteboard
app on **September 14, 2026**, citing
[Migration of Whiteboards from Azure to OneDrive](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/whiteboard/migration-of-whiteboards-from-azure-to-onedrive).
Microsoft edits that page as the wind-down proceeds, and the date has already been moved
out of the page's headline sections. This folder preserves the evidence behind the claim
so it stays citable regardless of future edits.
app on **October 16, 2026**, citing
[Retirement of the standalone Microsoft Whiteboard apps](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/whiteboard/retirement-standalone-microsoft-whiteboard-apps).
Microsoft has repeatedly edited its published schedule, so this folder preserves the
evidence behind the claim — each revision as it stood — so it stays citable regardless
of future edits.

- [Microsoft Whiteboard shutdown (original date).png](<Microsoft Whiteboard shutdown (original date).png>) —
the "Final migration and retirement schedule" table as originally published, with
September 14, 2026 as its closing row: "The standalone Whiteboard apps for Windows,
iOS, and Android retire. Whiteboard remains available through Microsoft Teams and the
web."
- [Archived copy of that revision](https://web.archive.org/web/20260818052606/https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/whiteboard/migration-of-whiteboards-from-azure-to-onedrive)
(Wayback Machine, August 18, 2026), where the September 14 date is clearly visible in
the schedule table.
## Timeline of Microsoft's published schedule

As of August 23, 2026 the live page still carries the sentence "The standalone Windows,
iOS, and Android apps retire on September 14, 2026", but only in passing under
"Migration trigger and eligible tenants". The schedule table now opens with the migration
deadlines instead, which Microsoft slipped by roughly a month (migration end
August 22 → September 25; permanent deletion September 5 → October 16; service shutdown
November 30 added) while the app retirement date held.
**As originally published** (see
[Microsoft Whiteboard shutdown (original date).png](<Microsoft Whiteboard shutdown (original date).png>)
and the [Wayback snapshot of August 18, 2026](https://web.archive.org/web/20260818052606/https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/whiteboard/migration-of-whiteboards-from-azure-to-onedrive)):
migration ended August 22, remaining Azure boards were deleted September 5, and the
standalone apps retired **September 14, 2026** — the closing row of the schedule table.

When citing the retirement publicly:
**Late August 2026:** the migration page slipped the migration deadlines by roughly a
month (migration end August 22 → September 25; deletion September 5 → October 16;
service shutdown November 30 added) while September 14 held, demoted to a passing
sentence under "Migration trigger and eligible tenants".

**August 28, 2026:** a dedicated retirement page appeared at the URL above, postponing
the app retirement itself: "The standalone Microsoft Whiteboard apps for Windows, iOS,
and Android retire on **October 16, 2026**." It also states that after that date,
"already-installed apps display a retirement experience instead of opening the
Whiteboard gallery". October 16 is also the date remaining Azure-based boards are
permanently deleted.

## Citing the retirement publicly

- Say the app **"retires"** — Microsoft's own verb. Do not claim the app *stops working*
on September 14; installed copies may run for some time after.
- Always scope the claim to the standalone **app**: Whiteboard itself remains available
in Teams and on the web.
- Quote the sentence verbatim, and prefer the archived copy or the bitmap over the live
page, which can change again.
- Say the app **"retires"** on October 16 — and, quoting Microsoft, that installed apps
then display "a retirement experience instead of opening". Both are verbatim claims;
do not paraphrase beyond them.
- Quote with a screenshot, and prefer an archived copy or the bitmap over the live
pages: the schedule changed three times in the ten days around our launch, and may
change again. Snapshot each revision to the Wayback Machine when it changes.
