🔌 Plugin overview

  • Plugin name: Octopus Deploy
  • Purpose / problem solved: Shows what is deployed where, deployment and runbook history, the task queue, deployments waiting on a manual intervention, deployment freezes, deployment target and worker health (including Tentacle and Calamari versions), certificate expiry, license expiry and usage, and the audit log. Works with Octopus Cloud and self-hosted Octopus Server, and replaces the hand-written PowerShell scripts customers currently run on a relay agent to get this data.
  • Primary audience (e.g. platform teams, SREs, product teams): Platform and release engineering teams, SREs, and anyone who owns a deployment pipeline
  • Authentication method(s) (e.g. OAuth, Username/Password, API Key): API key (X-Octopus-ApiKey header); the README recommends a read-only service account

🧪 Test plan

Tested against a live Octopus Cloud instance through a deployed, authenticated data source:

  • Authentication: config validation probe (/api/users/me) returns 200; the spaces check passes.
  • Import: spaces, projects, environments, deployment targets, tenants, runbooks, worker pools and workers all import (dependent steps per space), including on a fresh data source's first import.
  • Data streams: every stream tested with squaredup test against real data, scoped to a space and to individual objects, with differing results per object to prove the filters narrow correctly:
    • Deployment Status, Deployments (from the deployment report), Release Progression and Tasks, including multi-project filtering and timeframe "None" returning only active tasks
    • Deployment Targets and Workers, including health, Tentacle and Calamari agent status, and environment and worker pool filters
    • Runbook Status (two runbooks, including environments never run)
    • Pending Interventions (a real manual intervention left waiting), Certificates (a certificate expiring in 20 days), Deployment Freezes (an active freeze scoped to one project and environment) and License (7 limits)
    • Audit Events, scoped to space, project and environment, with the category filter
  • Dashboards: all nine installed on a fresh data source and rendered with live data, with the perspectives checked by switching objects (tiles follow the variable). SmartViz specs checked with the SquaredUp visualization validator.

⚠️ Known limitations

  • New data sources may import in two passes. Projects, environments, targets, tenants, runbooks and workers are imported per space after spaces; on a new data source's first import they can be skipped, and appear on the next import.
  • Deployments only covers completed deployments. Queued and running deployments appear in Tasks and Deployment Status. Its timeframe is limited to the last quarter, because the deployment report isn't paged.
  • Tasks history is limited to the last 7 days to stay within response size limits on busy servers.
  • Deployment freezes and the license are server-wide. Octopus doesn't record a space against either, so they are shown against the default space.
  • Dynamic worker pools list no workers. Octopus Cloud's hosted pools are managed by Octopus and don't expose their workers.
  • Release Progression times are UTC.
  • License access with a read-only account is untested. The license status endpoint worked with a full-rights key; if a restricted account is refused, only the license tiles are affected.
  • No correlation rules yet. Rules linking targets to environments, workers to pools and runbooks to projects were tried, but couldn't be verified (rules only reach a data source when it's created, and imported ID lists don't match single IDs), so they're left for a follow-up.
  • Read-only. The plugin never changes anything in Octopus Deploy.

Octopus Deploy is a common release orchestration tool, and teams want
to see what is deployed where, how deployments are trending and
whether deployment targets are healthy alongside their other
SquaredUp data. The plugin works with Octopus Cloud and self-hosted
Octopus Server using a server URL and an API key.

Spaces are imported first, and projects, environments, deployment
targets and tenants are imported per space as dependent steps.
Octopus IDs are unique across a server, so the raw IDs are used as
source IDs, with the space ID kept as a property. Every data stream
accepts a whole space or a single project, environment, tenant or
target as its scope, and derives the space from the object. An
earlier design scoped tiles to spaces and filtered through a bound
object parameter, but on perspective dashboards that either narrowed
the space scope to nothing or ignored the selected object.

Deployment history uses the Octopus deployment report rather than the
task list, because deployment tasks carry no environment, tenant or
release fields. The report has no warnings flag, so successful
deployments with warnings are shown as successful everywhere, which
also matches how Octopus presents them. The task list's environment
filter accepts a single ID only, which per-object scoping satisfies.
A timeframe of None on Tasks returns only active tasks, and the
history timeframes are capped because neither endpoint is cheap on a
busy server.

The dashboards use SmartViz, with classic visualisations as a
fallback. Release Progression is built on the endpoint behind the
Octopus project dashboard so it can show where each release is
deployed and where it is ready to go next.

Also adds the plugin to CODEOWNERS.

The first version covered deployments, tasks and deployment targets.
This adds the parts of Octopus that tell a team what needs attention
rather than what happened: deployments waiting on a manual
intervention, active and scheduled deployment freezes, certificates
nearing expiry, Tentacle and Calamari agents that need upgrading, and
worker health. It also adds runbooks, with each runbook's latest run
per environment taken from the same progression endpoint the Octopus
runbook overview uses, and the audit log.

Runbooks, worker pools and workers are imported as new object types,
with Runbook and Worker Pool perspectives, plus top-level
Infrastructure and Audit dashboards. Every new stream follows the
existing scoping model, so it accepts a space or a single object.

Deployment freezes are server-wide and carry no space, so a space
scope only returns them for the default space; otherwise a multi-space
tile would repeat every freeze. The worker pool import stream is named
workerPoolList because an import step using a stream named
workerPools failed every time with "Failed to get data stream", while
the identical stream under another name worked.

Correlation rules were tried and left out for now. Plugin rules only
reach a data source when it is created, list-valued join keys are
imported as JSON text that never equals a single id, and rule edits
did not take effect on an existing data source, so the
target-to-environment rules could not be verified.

Octopus blocks new work when a license or Cloud subscription expires or
an installation reaches a licensed limit, so the overview now shows days
to expiry and usage against each limit (spaces, projects, targets,
tasks, tenants, users and workers). A customer's existing PowerShell
integration already tracks license expiry, which is the one thing that
integration covered and this plugin did not.

The license status endpoint is server-wide and works on both Octopus
Cloud and self-hosted servers. Like deployment freezes it carries no
space, so it is returned only for the default space and isn't repeated
across a multi-space tile.

Also adds dashboard screenshots to the plugin metadata.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 54947

The plugin has localized dashboard accuracy issues affecting success-rate colors and agent-update counts, plus an unresolved task-chart rendering contract. These do not indicate an outage or data mutation, but should be corrected or accepted before relying on the dashboards.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 54947

The integration is read-only in its configured operations, but it accepts unencrypted server URLs while sending a reusable API key. An intercepted key could expose everything its account can access. HTTPS examples and read-only account guidance reduce risk but do not enforce those protections. Recovery and access-revocation behavior for indexed data remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new Server URL validation accepts plain HTTP, and the shared connection attaches the reusable API key without upgrading the scheme. If an operator configures HTTP and the host honors that URL, an on-path observer can capture and replay the key with the account's effective permissions, potentially across multiple Spaces. HTTPS examples and read-only account recommendations do not enforce encrypted transport or restrict the supplied key. Runtime-level HTTP rejection was unavailable for verification.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A captured connection key would expose the resources permitted to its account, not merely the currently selected dashboard object. Setup guidance grants access per monitored Space. Documentation also identifies license and deployment-freeze data as server-wide despite displaying them against the default Space, so display scoping must not be mistaken for an authorization boundary.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained concern is a conditional network interception path: operator-configured HTTP leads to credential-bearing requests, allowing an on-path attacker to obtain the API key if the runtime permits that transport. No attacker control over setup, default use of HTTP, or successful interception was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Authentication is centralized in the connection configuration, and the API-key input is password-type. Audit transformation carries identity and network metadata into the stream but does not select the API key. This is an intentional sensitive-data flow, not evidence of unauthorized disclosure; downstream viewer authorization was not available for assessment.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Stable upstream IDs, Space properties, and explicit dependencies support normal ownership tracing. However, the declarations and documented two-pass import do not establish atomic refresh, idempotent concurrent recovery, or retraction of indexed data after permission loss or removal. Those host-runtime guarantees remain coverage gaps rather than demonstrated defects.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require authenticated HTTPS before sending the API key, preserve certificate verification, and document installing the appropriate trust chain for private certificate authorities rather than relying on certificate-validation bypass.

The optional "Check data access" step passed on an empty spaces list,
reporting "Spaces are accessible" to a user whose key can see nothing.
It now fails with its existing message, while staying optional.

Also from review: freeze hours are left unrounded for the column's
decimal formatting to handle, the classic fallback of the duration
and wait chart plots both measures like its SmartViz chart does, and
the README presents ignoring certificate errors as a fallback that
turns off certificate validation.
