📋 Summary

This PR fixes the EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert plugin failing to sign in and failing to import on large sites, and makes its data useful on those sites by reading sensor readings on demand. It also adds dashboards for UPS, rack PDU and environmental monitor devices. These came out of testing against a customer's live DCE server (559 devices, about 31,000 sensors).

Sign-in and setup

DCE rejected the placeholder OAuth client ID the plugin sent with the password grant (invalid_client). When no client ID is set, the plugin now sends no client at all. The server URL is also more forgiving: anything pasted after /isxg (such as the API docs page) is ignored. The setup checks now say which step failed and link to a new Troubleshooting section in the README.

Large installations

Reading every sensor takes DCE 17 to 31 seconds and returns about 7 MB on this site, longer than SquaredUp allows. So the sensors import step is now optional and behind a new Import sensors setting, off by default. Device dashboards read their own sensors instead, which takes DCE about 0.1 seconds per device. Two new streams, Environmental History and Device Sensor History, chart a device's sensors in two quick calls without needing Sensor objects.

Alarm History across all devices is now capped at the last 24 hours, because a week of resolved alarms on this site is far more than one response can hold. A single device's history uses its own endpoint and covers any timeframe.

Dashboards

I rebuilt the dashboards with SmartViz:

  • Data Center Overview: KPIs, health and alarm category charts, and environmental alarms.
  • Device: gauges for temperature and humidity against ASHRAE ranges, plus temperature history.
  • UPS, Rack PDU and Environmental: new tabs that appear on matching devices by device type. UPS shows battery capacity, runtime, load and voltage. Rack PDU shows power, current by phase and bank, and outlet states. Environmental covers NetBotz and other environmental monitors.
  • Device Group: now includes the group's active alarms.

Status badges and blocks use DCE's own wording and severity colours. The plugin never overrides DCE's severity.

Smaller fixes

  • Device group and device names in alarm tables are now clickable links.
  • Sensor names are plain text when Sensor objects aren't imported, instead of links to missing objects.
  • Gauges show "No data" for unplugged probes instead of 0.
  • Every request asks DCE for English with US units (locale=en_US). The dashboards depend on this: they match some sensors by name, and the temperature bands assume °F.

🖼️ Screenshots

These are from the customer's live data source. I replaced device names, locations, addresses, serial numbers and group names with made-up values, so the counts and charts are real but the names aren't. They're also in the plugin's new screenshots folder, which metadata.json now lists.

🧪 Testing

I tested against a customer's on-premises DCE server through a SquaredUp relay agent, with the customer checking each dashboard in their SquaredUp organization. Setup passes, and the import completes with devices and device groups (sensors off). The Overview, Device, Device Group, UPS, Rack PDU and Environmental dashboards all load with live data.

I also ran individual streams against their data source with squaredup test. That's how I checked the timings above, the 24-hour alarm cap, and that group alarms match the Alarm Summary counts. It's also how I checked that the UPS and PDU tiles find their sensors across the models they have: Smart-UPS 1000, 1500, 3000 XL and SRT 5000; PDUs AP7900B, AP7968B, AP7863, AP8965 and AP8841.

squaredup validate passes, and the SmartViz chart specs pass the platform's visualization validator.

The Sensor dashboard and the Import sensors path weren't tested against live data. This customer has too many sensors for an import, so it stays off for them.

⚠️ Breaking changes

Does this PR introduce any breaking changes?

  • No
  • Yes (please describe):

No one is using this plugin yet, so nothing in use breaks. For the record, three behaviours changed since 1.0.1:

  • Sensors are no longer imported unless Import sensors is turned on.
  • The sensorName column is gone from Active Alarms and Alarm History, because it failed whenever a sensor wasn't imported.
  • Readings always come back in English with US units, so a DCE server set to metric shows °F.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4e7a9

Credential exposure remains possible during troubleshooting, and existing v1 consumers may break after this update. Resolve both risks before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4e7a9

The revised sign-in path is documented as placing the DCE password in request URLs and diagnostic logs. This creates a credential-exposure concern despite HTTPS and cleanup instructions. Device-scoped monitoring limits dependency on sensor imports, but upgrade and cleanup behavior for existing Sensor objects remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The revised no-client sign-in path is documented as sending the DCE username and password in URL parameters, exposing reusable credentials to relay Debug logs and potentially DCE access logs. The PR also adds troubleshooting instructions that deliberately enable this logging. A reader of an affected log could authenticate with the configured account's authority. Cleanup and redaction instructions reduce subsequent exposure but do not prevent initial persistence. The exposure is inferred from the configuration change and explicit documentation; runtime transport and baseline logging behavior were not independently verified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Credential recovery from an affected log could expose the configured DCE account and every device group or operation that account is authorized to access. A view-only account limits consequences; use of a more privileged account could increase them. No cross-tenant compromise or downstream credential reuse is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported attack path is credential-bearing token URL to relay Debug log, followed by access to that log or an unredacted copy and reuse of the password against reachable DCE authentication. DCE access-log persistence is also documented as possible. This requires log access rather than an unauthenticated remote read; actual log access controls and retention are unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The documentation identifies HTTPS protection in transit and instructs users to disable Debug, delete affected logs, remove token-URL lines before sharing, and rotate the password after copying or sharing a log. These are post-exposure controls; disabling Debug alone does not remove persisted credentials.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate omission of OAuth client credentials from password transport so no-client authentication can retain form-body username/password delivery where supported. Redact credentials before token requests reach diagnostic logging, and validate this behavior in the shared transport rather than relying on manual log cleanup.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the two main themes of the changeset: the sign-in and large-site import fixes, and the new UPS, PDU and environmental dashboards. The raw summary confirms both themes appear across the files: configValidation, metadata.json, sensor import changes, and new dashboard JSON files. The title is long at 99 characters and 15 words, but it is specific and accurate. It omits the new history streams and the 24-hour alarm cap, which is acceptable because the title does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the author's own template structure. It includes Summary, Plugin details, Testing, Breaking changes, Documentation, and Checklist sections. It gives a detailed account of the sign-in fix, the large-installation changes, the new dashboards, smaller fixes, and test results. It also lists breaking behaviour changes for 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 and includes screenshots. The repository's template index points to three PR templates, and the description covers the 'Change to an existing plugin' structure. The description is largely complete. Minor gaps remain: the Related issue links to #136 while the PR is #157, and the Testing section states the Sensor dashboard and Import sensors path were not tested.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 4 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Add five plugin screenshots and register them in the metadata.
Document that DCE returns complete arrays without response paging, so pagingContext handles the stream's only next page.
Use `statusText_uniqueValues` for the donut chart labels instead of the unrelated severity column.

Preserve the v1 contract or move this change to an approved v2.

Existing configurations do not set importSensors. sensorImport treats any value other than "true" as the no-sensor path, so existing users can stop importing Sensor objects. The PR also removes sensorName from the alarms and alarmHistory stream metadata and from the v1 default alarm-table columns.

No complete stream is removed or renamed, but these changes still alter the existing v1 import and stream schema. Preserve the v1 behavior and metadata, or ask for approval before placing this contract in a new v2 folder. A 1.0.2 bump alone does not preserve the old v1 contract.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on metadata.json (v1 contract): v1 was only published recently and has no users yet. The one test data source never had Sensor objects, because its sensor import timed out on that site, which is why sensor import is now off by default. sensorName was removed because it failed whenever sensors weren’t imported. With no existing configurations, keeping the old v1 behavior or starting a v2 folder wouldn’t protect anyone. I’ve noted this under Breaking changes in the description. Leaving the final call to the reviewers.

@shawn149 Thanks for the context. Given your report that v1 has no users or existing configurations, a v2 folder would not provide a migration benefit here. Your explanation also clarifies why sensorName was removed.

I checked REVIEW.md and plugins/EcoStruxureIT-DCE/v1/metadata.json, following the supplied versioning guidance. The repository rule still requires a new major folder for breaking changes and states no exception for an unused release.

I’ll leave the exception decision to the human reviewers, as you requested. They should explicitly accept the documented v1 contract change before merge. I’m not requesting another code change in this reply.

## File-specific guidelines

### Metadata (metadata.json)

- version - The version number MUST be increased for any change to the plugin. It can never decrease. If a breaking change is made, the major version number of the plugin should be increased - for example, when deleting a data stream or significantly modifying the UI parameters.

## Versioning

Versions are compared against `main`, because merging is the only point at which a version matters. A PR that modifies an existing plugin must leave `metadata.json` with a `version` higher than the one on `main`. If it doesn't, assume the task is unfinished and prompt to add one.

## Versioning

- **The major version must match the folder.** A plugin in `v1/` is `1.x.y`, a plugin in `v2/` is `2.x.y`. A new major version folder therefore starts at `<N>.0.0`, not `1.0.0`.

## Versioning

**Breaking (MAJOR) changes — do not create a new major version without asking the user first.** It is often possible to avoid the break entirely. If a major version is genuinely needed:
- Mark the removed/changed stream `deprecated` in one release, then remove it in a follow-up major bump
