TypedPython kernels: position against JAX, delegate to torch only where it matches JAX #189

Closed

Description

What

Record the JAX comparison in docs/design/typedpython.md §5 and docs/investigations/typedpython-vs-jax.md:

  • Positioning: where JAX does not go (mobile Vulkan/Metal, embedded CPython, Python semantics kept, build-time type gate), not "better than JAX".
  • Delegation rule (maintainer, 2026-10-04): a capability is left to torch only where torch performs as well as JAX; every capability where that is not shown is listed for a separate decision.
  • No numpy: the CPU reference of tile ops is pure Python; the first slice proves a kernel runs on CPython without JAX, torch or numpy.
  • IREE/StableHLO as a model-deployment alternative in §5.4; kernel bundles carry IR and emitter versions; fusion stays a known weakness.

Done when

§5 and §6 and §8 updated, investigation recorded, no em-dash. Docs only.
