Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved consistency of account-lock checks and failed-login tracking for password and TOTP sign-ins.
    • Login-attempt records now expire according to the configured timeout, helping prevent outdated attempts from affecting later sign-ins.
  • Updates
    • Login rate limiting is active only when both the retry limit and timeout are configured with positive values.

📝 Walkthrough

Login, TOTP, and basic-auth flows now perform account-lock checks and login-attempt updates within a shared cache-lock callback. Login-attempt entries expire after the configured timeout.

Changes: Login attempt handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Login-attempt cache operations
internal/service/auth_service.go
IsAccountLocked and RecordLoginAttempt use caller-provided cache actions. WithLoginAttempt runs callbacks under the login-cache lock. Attempt entries expire after LoginTimeout seconds, and rate limiting requires positive retry and timeout settings. The whitelist empty-filter check now uses errors.Is.
Login and TOTP authentication
internal/controller/user_controller.go
Login and TOTP handlers run lock checks and attempt recording inside WithLoginAttempt callbacks. Failure branches preserve their existing responses and audit or log actions, and the handlers exit when the wrapper returns an error.
Basic authentication
internal/middleware/context_middleware.go
basicAuth runs lock checks, password validation, and attempt recording inside WithLoginAttempt. Locked accounts retain the existing lock headers.

The race fix makes every login, TOTP and basic-auth check across all users run one at a time. This can sharply slow authentication under load. A slow directory lookup could also stall all sign-ins. Scope the lock per user before merging.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Replace the global login-cache lock with a lock per identifier.

WithLoginAttempt holds the single CacheStore mutex (pkg/cache/cache_store.go:39-49) for the whole callback. Every caller runs bcrypt, LDAP or database I/O inside that callback. All login, TOTP and basic-auth requests for all users therefore run one at a time.

Throughput gets a hard cap at roughly one bcrypt comparison at a time. Invalid-credential traffic from one client delays everyone else. A stalled LDAP call stops all authentication.

Check-then-record atomicity only needs serialization for each identifier.

  • internal/service/auth_service.go#L331-L336: make WithLoginAttempt take an identifier. Lock a mutex for that identifier (for example, from a sync.Map). Pass actions that use the cache's own short-lived Get/Set.
  • internal/controller/user_controller.go#L78-L126: pass req.Username to WithLoginAttempt. Keep SearchUser and the password checks inside the lock for that username only.
  • internal/controller/user_controller.go#L336-L389: pass context.GetUsername(). Move DeleteSession after the callback, because it does not touch login-attempt state.
  • internal/middleware/context_middleware.go#L262-L292: pass username so each basic-auth request locks only its own identifier.
