Summary

Bind pending replies to the captured unique responder, and atomically reject named calls if their alias owner changes before dispatch.

A broker-stamped peer C could previously complete requester S's pending call to responder B with a matching reply_serial. The broker correctly overwrote the claimed sender, but the requester consumed the reply without checking that identity.

Changes

  • Capture the expected unique responder in the pending entry. Ignore other peers' success/error replies without consuming the genuine waiter's slot.
  • Preserve genuine broker routing errors, legacy control replies and sanitized responder errors. Confidential successful replies must remain confidential.
  • Add optional expected_responder method-call header and ResolveCallTarget negotiation. Named SDK calls capture the broker's unique owner; routing compares that guard, resolves the target and checks confidential recipient admission under one router lock.
  • Preserve ModuleUnavailable lifecycle errors during owner negotiation and allocate the call serial after its lookup.
  • Pin stream writers to the accepted Open responder, so Write/Close/Abort cannot re-resolve into a replacement owner or incur one broker lookup per chunk. Unstamped raw replies retain their original address.
  • Keep legacy clients routable when they omit the header. New named clients fail explicitly with the broker's UnknownMethod on brokers lacking guard negotiation; silently falling back would leave alias calls forgeable.
  • Document protected broker transport as the trust premise. Raw attach without handshake retains unverified direct compatibility, including unstamped replies; arbitrary raw headers do not authenticate peers.

Verification

Deterministic MemoryBus regression was RED before the fix: requester returned forged instead of genuine. An ordered signal barrier proves the forger's response was processed before B was allowed to reply. No sleeps or external services.

Additional tests cover named/unique targets, forged success/error/private flags, confidential attested calls, ordinary/confidential alias takeover refusal before dispatch, preserved genuine error names, system control sender rejection, legacy wire frames/clients, old-broker refusal, malformed owner negotiation and serial ordering.

  • Final full all-feature suite: 510 unit tests and 3 doc tests passed; 18 existing unit/doc skips.
  • Final LLVM all-feature workspace suite after stream-pinning follow-up: 512 unit tests passed; 16 existing unit skips.
  • Strict locked all-target/all-feature Clippy, slim no-default-feature check, formatting and diff checks pass.
  • LLVM overall line coverage: 86.75%; changed executable production lines: 152/154 (98.70%).

This preserves every granular checkpoint commit and integrates latest canonical main 8a4d8ca. No host changes, upper gitlink updates or independent artifact-stream contracts are included.

Method calls can now carry an expected responder, and the broker resolves
the destination and verifies that unique owner under a single routing lock
before delivery. Clients capture the reply identity before sending and
reject replies from any other sender, so a well-known name that changes
hands mid-call can no longer redirect the answer.

Update the reply tests to take a plain transport reference instead of an
Arc, and construct InterfaceName and MemberName via their constructors
rather than From<&str>, which is not implemented. The captured test log
is refreshed to reflect the remaining compile error.

Expand the reply tests to exercise forged replies across named, confidential, and error cases, and add unit coverage for the pending-reply acceptance rules and the conditional owner header. The captured-alias test now compares against the wire name of the actual error variant, and the log records a clean compile.

Record the successful cargo test run for the tinybus reply_tests suite, showing all 11 tests passing, so the captured output is available alongside the existing log.

Refactor the alias takeover test into a shared helper so it can run both
with and without the modules feature, and add a confidential variant that
attests the original owner before the call. Also add tests for native wire
names on genuine broker errors and for round-tripping frames that omit the
optional expected_responder header, and document the conditional routing
and ResolveCallTarget negotiation in the protocol spec.

Pending replies now record whether the connection has no unique name, and
reply authority accepts a sender-less reply in that case as long as the
delivery was not brokered. This restores raw direct transport
compatibility for peers that cannot be authenticated, while still
rejecting proven broker deliveries that lack a sender.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

ResolveCallTarget is now handled ahead of the main dispatch path so the
router lock is not held while consulting the module lifecycle owner. The
method also reports module-state errors for names with no live owner,
matching the specificity of ordinary routing failures.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The expected-responder validation previously short-circuited when the field was absent, so the uniqueness and message-kind checks were skipped in some cases. The condition now evaluates the responder through is_some_and, ensuring the protocol error is raised whenever a present responder is non-unique or accompanies a non-call message.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The outbound serial was allocated before validation and owner negotiation, so a guarded call could consume a serial ahead of the alias negotiation it depends on. The serial is now assigned only once the message is ready to go on the wire, and tests cover the ordering and the rejection of a non-unique responder.

Calls to named destinations now capture the destination’s current unique owner. The broker checks that owner during routing, and connections validate replies against the pending call’s responder and confidentiality requirements.

Changes

Conditional Call Routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expected responder contract
crates/tinybus/src/message/mod.rs, docs/protocol.md
Messages add an optional expected_responder field. Validation restricts it to unique names on method calls. The protocol describes its use.
Guarded broker routing
crates/tinybus/src/router.rs, crates/tinybus/src/broker.rs, docs/protocol.md
The bus resolves a named destination’s owner. The broker checks the expected owner during routing and returns NameHasNoOwner when it does not match.
Client negotiation and reply authorization
crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs, crates/tinybus/src/connection_reply_tests.rs, docs/protocol.md
Connections resolve named destinations within the call timeout and record reply constraints. Reply dispatch checks sender identity, broker provenance, and confidentiality. Tests cover guarded calls, reply authorization, and compatibility paths.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7298f

Named calls are now pinned to the destination's current owner, and replies from other peers are ignored. One cost remains: large stream uploads to a named destination make an extra broker round trip for every chunk. That is worth fixing, but it does not affect correctness, so the change is mergeable.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7298f

The change strengthens reply identity checks and prevents calls from being redirected after alias ownership changes. No introduced security defect was established. Remaining risk concerns mixed-version operation, the requirement for a protected broker connection, and incomplete coverage of external clients and deployments.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant attack scope is outstanding calls among peers sharing a broker. A peer able to address the requester and predict a reply serial previously could substitute a result; updated brokered clients additionally require the captured responder. No new privilege or cross-broker authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The regression-test source orders a forged reply before the genuine response and asserts that the genuine response wins. Alias-takeover tests assert refusal before replacement-peer delivery. These support the intended controls without constituting an executed-test result in this review.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Broker ingress overwrites peer-supplied sender identity. Broker-stamped routing errors may substitute for the expected responder, but routing failures are returned directly over the initiating peer's transport. Control replies retain the legacy unstamped exception; forwarded peer replies are stamped with unique identities.
  • observed — Raw attachment without handshake retains unverified direct compatibility, including acceptance of unstamped replies. This predates the PR's stronger brokered checks. Header values alone do not authenticate peers; protected broker transport remains an explicit trust premise.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Dropping a call future after pending insertion has no cancellation cleanup in either base or head. An entry can remain until an accepted reply or disconnect. Owner negotiation adds another instance of this existing lifecycle weakness; a materially worse security exposure was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give pending entries cancellation-safe ownership and add interruption tests during owner negotiation and ordinary reply waiting, improving resource containment on long-lived connections.

Pin stream operations to the responder from Open.

StreamWriter stores the original well-known destination. Each Write, Close, and Abort sends a new call through call_raw, which resolves that destination with ResolveCallTarget again. A large upload therefore adds one broker round trip per chunk.

Capture the authenticated unique sender from the Open reply and use it as the writer destination. Keep the original destination when the reply has no sender, for unbrokered direct transports.

Add a regression test asserting that stream chunks and close stay with the peer that answered the open, even after the name is released and re-requested by another connection.

Stream writers now capture the unique sender from the Open reply and reuse
it for every later Write, Close, and Abort, so a stream is not redirected
when a well-known name moves to a new owner mid-transfer. Direct raw
transports without a stamped sender keep their original destination, and
the protocol docs and reply tests were updated to cover the abort path.

Addressed the stream-pinning note from the CodeRabbit review body in c6438a8.

The deterministic MemoryBus test was RED before the fix: after alias takeover, Write failed UnknownStream at the replacement rather than reaching the original receiver. Open now retains the accepted responder header and initializes StreamWriter with that unique destination. Every Write, Close and Abort stays with that peer. Unstamped raw direct replies keep the original destination for compatibility.

Both chunk/close and abort takeover regressions pass, together with the existing direct stream compatibility tests. Final LLVM workspace all-feature run passed 512 tests; strict all-target/all-feature Clippy, slim check and formatting passed. No review thread exists for this body-only note, so this reply records the fix on the PR.

What changed

Reply identity is now captured before a call is sent rather than inferred from the reply body: pending waiters record an expected unique responder, whether the call targets bus control, whether it is confidential, and whether it is an unverified direct call, and a reply is delivered only if it is accepted by that record. For named destinations, the SDK first calls broker method `ResolveCallTarget` and stamps `expected_responder` with the returned unique owner; the broker compares that guard against the current owner and selects the recipient under the same routing lock, so a changed owner yields NameHasNoOwner without dispatch, while the already-selected peer remains the only accepted responder. A new optional `expected_responder` header is validated to be unique and to accompany only a method call, and is omitted from the wire when absent so legacy frames round-trip. Outbound serial assignment moved after alias negotiation so the negotiation precedes the call on the wire and in the serial sequence, and the timeout budget accounts for negotiation time. Stream writers now retain the unique responder that answered Open for later Write, Close and Abort instead of re-resolving the alias. Docs/protocol.md documents the header, the reply-matching rules, the negotiation flow, and the limits of these guarantees on raw attach transports. The critique lane could not review any of the changed files, so none of this behavior was independently critiqued.

Features

  • Added — Broker ResolveCallTarget method: The broker exposes the caller-facing owner lookup used for negotiation, returning the current owner or NameHasNoOwner, and consulting module lifecycle state for a more specific unavailability answer without holding the router lock during that consultation. (crates/tinybus/src/broker.rs#impl Broker {)
  • Modified — Reply-sender authorization for pending waiters: Reply delivery is conditioned on the captured identity: a reply must come from the expected unique responder, or be a broker-stamped error, or (for legacy bus control) be unstamped or broker-stamped, and confidential calls require a confidential successful reply while sanitized errors stay unflagged; unverified direct transports keep a compatibility path that a proven broker delivery cannot use. (crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs#struct Inner {, crates/tinybus/src/connection.rs#async fn dispatch(inner: &Inner, header: &Header, body: Value, brokered: bool) -, docs/protocol.md#the error name, which travels in `error_name`.)
  • Added — Protocol documentation of reply binding and its limits: Documents the new header, the reply-matching and confidential-reply rules, the negotiation-before-send flow, legacy-client and old-broker behavior, stream pinning, and the explicit statement that these guarantees depend on a real broker overwriting ingress senders rather than a raw attach link. (docs/protocol.md#interface `ai.tinyhumans.tinybus.Bus`., docs/protocol.md#omitted field and a `null` field identically., docs/protocol.md#the error name, which travels in `error_name`.)

  • Positive: Invariants stated in the new comments are each pinned by a named test in the added reply test module.
  • Lane summary: The change adds a conditional `expected_responder` header, an SDK-side `ResolveCallTarget` negotiation, reply-sender validation in the dispatch loop, and a new `connection_reply_tests.rs` with 17 tests that exercise the forgery, alias-takeover, legacy, and stream-pinning paths over the in-memory transport. The tests assert on real observable outcomes (which reply wins, which error name comes back, which peer receives chunks), so they are not decorative, and the invariants in the new comments are each pinned by a named test. The one gap I found is an unhandled panic path in the new error formatting on `ResolveCallTarget`.
