TinySecurity needs to call host-provided audit, prompt and secret-storage callbacks confidentially. TinyBus currently restricts confidential recipients to admitted modules, so an ordinary host cannot serve these callbacks.

Adds an SDK-owned local connection and an exact-instance callback binding for a verified loaded module. Private bounded scopes bind the module peer, destination, interface, path and members. The outgoing client exposes typed calls without exposing the underlying connection. Callback admission waits for initialization, rolls back on failure and revokes on shutdown; drain accounting follows the actual user future through cancellation.

Regression tests cover connection encapsulation, rollback before initialization and READY followed by a fault. Linux tests execute hashed native callback modules, including eager initialization, failure, reinitialization, timeout and revocation. The actual native callback fixtures also pass in hosted macOS and Windows CI.

Validation: all thirteen hosted checks pass at 0abd44f, whose exact source tree matches local integration 7e38ff4. Native module tests pass on Linux, macOS and Windows. Fresh local Linux native execution passes 540 tests, and Windows test compilation passes. Independent archived replay from both SDK and OpenHuman directories passes 540 tests on the prior fb9e926 revision; the sole subsequent difference fixes a Windows-only test helper path. That prior revision's fresh configured per-file 90% and unrestricted 80% coverage pass: current-main changed lines 608/638 (95.30%), total 8741/9681 (90.29%). Source, retained native binaries, profiles and JSON/LCOV summaries were independently verified. Canonical CI, guarded activation and module-controller admission changes are preserved through normal merges.

Review fixes replace long-lived plaintext callback configuration with a private fingerprint of initialization bytes, preserving tested JSON equality semantics including signed zero and key order. Reinitialization reuses one confidential serialized buffer; the fingerprint is not exposed. A genuine native regression failed on the old retained configuration and passes after the fix. Callback attestation guidance and test-module placement are corrected.

Follow-up to merged PR #46. Needed for tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328.

The context module example now exposes a ConfidentialCallback method that
dispatches through call_confidential, and a new ignored host test verifies
that a verified cdylib can deliver a confidential callback to a native
client.

Modules can now register scoped callbacks that the router resolves for
confidential calls to unique names, with the callback configuration fixed
at admission time. Callback capabilities are revoked when their owning
peer disconnects or the binding is removed.

Adds a close_outbound helper on the memory transport and the Arc import
needed by the router so module host callbacks can shut down outbound
delivery.

The callback connection is now created with Connection::attach and the handshake is performed as a separate step, matching the updated connection API. This keeps the host callback path working after the connection setup was split.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Callback registrations are now tracked as in-flight until the connection
call succeeds, so a failed registration no longer leaves a stale entry in
the served list and concurrent duplicates are rejected. The host also
detaches the unique name and records the transport for rollback when a
module is refused, preventing leaked bus names after a failed start.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Module initialization could previously proceed before host callback
admission was decided, letting a module run with callbacks that were
about to be rejected. Initialization is now paused until the router
accepts the callbacks, and rollback revokes callbacks for the peer
resolved from the loaded module list when the binding has no peer yet.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The loader now re-verifies the artifact hash after dependency checks so a
file swapped mid-load is refused instead of admitted. Initialization also
waits for the module to report ready, with a five second timeout, before
treating the load as successful.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Move the eager callback fixture's completion check out of the example and
into an ignored host test that loads the built cdylib, verifying the
callback peer is bound before READY, that a failing setup rolls back the
module and its guard, and that reinitialization re-invokes the callback.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Host callback admission now checks that the incoming call was routed
confidentially, so a module cannot reach a scoped callback endpoint through
an ordinary call or a forged sender. Call contexts carry the confidential
flag, and callback bindings detach their unique name from the router on
revoke or rollback so failed setup leaves no stale route behind.

The router now rejects a host callback scope that is already registered, matching on either the same state or the same module peer, instead of only enforcing the 128-entry limit. The test was updated to register distinct scopes so it exercises the limit and the new duplicate check separately, and the example setup was simplified to return the async block directly.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add an ignored host test that drives a blocking native callback through a
caller timeout and a binding revoke, asserting the worker admission charge
stays held until the callback actually finishes and that a revoked callback
never publishes its result.

Extend the host callback revocation test to also assert that both call and call_with_context return errors once the guard has been revoked, covering the direct dispatch paths that were previously left unchecked.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Callback bindings now record a weak reference to the host that created
them, and loading a module checks that the binding's owner matches the
calling host. Previously only the broker router was compared, so two
hosts sharing a broker could accept each other's bindings.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Callback dispatch previously stayed authorized until the peer detached, so a faulted module could still receive calls. The callback state now holds a weak reference to the module transport and checks that it is neither dropped nor faulted before matching or authorizing a call.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

Add tests for rejected initialization releasing waiters without claiming
the initializing state, stopping before initialization terminating all
waiters, and a ready-then-faulted transport not reporting successful
readiness. Also document that the outgoing proxy handle cannot expose the
owned callback connection.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

…utdown

Module transports now enter a terminal faulted state when admission is
refused or the transport is stopped, so observers waiting on
initialization or readiness are released instead of hanging. Readiness
and load completion also re-check the callback lifetime and transport
state, and host callbacks expose a restricted proxy handle that omits
raw connection and service registration access.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The initialization gate wait now also selects on the context's init
notification, and the host fault handler notifies those waiters. Without
this, a transport blocked waiting for admission could hang forever when
the host faulted before the gate was resolved.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test asserting that a restricted outgoing proxy preserves its
destination, path and interface, and that typed, streaming and signal
calls still work while confidential and sensitive calls are rejected.
It also checks that attestation is absent, availability holds and the
debug representation names the host callback proxy.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The restricted outgoing handle test now builds its proxy from the crate's
BUS_NAME and BUS_PATH constants instead of repeating the literals, and the
availability check asserts the handle is unavailable, matching the restricted
handle's actual behaviour.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test that drops a load rollback after attaching a transport and
verifies the actual initialization observer is released, the host list
is empty, and the transport is dropped once no strong references remain.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The rollback test now obtains its admitted module through host.validate
instead of the provisional_info helper, so the fixture goes through the
same validation path as production code.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The load completion path now takes the module snapshot before checking
liveness and also rejects the load when the module is no longer in the
Ready state, so a fault racing the commit point can no longer turn a
successful snapshot into Faulted or Stopped.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds an SDK-created local callback capability for confidential calls from verified loaded modules. It adds endpoint binding, routing and lifecycle controls, test coverage, native module fixtures, and documentation.

Changes

Scoped host callbacks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Carry and resolve confidential callback calls
AGENTS.md, crates/tinybus/src/{attest.rs,broker.rs,connection.rs,message/mod.rs,proxy.rs,router.rs,service/mod.rs,service/mod_tests.rs}
Call contexts now retain the confidential flag. The router matches registered callback capabilities for confidential calls and revokes matching capabilities on detach. Documentation describes the callback exception and its scope.
Declare and serve guarded endpoints
crates/tinybus/src/{module/host_callbacks.rs,module/mod.rs,router.rs,transport/memory.rs,module/host_callbacks_tests.rs}
The new callback API validates endpoint declarations, creates a private memory connection, and provides a restricted proxy and guarded dispatch. Tests cover authorization, revocation, endpoint validation, and proxy behavior.
Bind callbacks during verified module loading
crates/tinybus/src/module/{host.rs,host_callbacks.rs,host_callbacks_tests.rs,host_tests.rs,transport.rs,transport_tests.rs}
Callback-aware loading verifies the artifact, binds the callback route before initialization, and waits for readiness. Transport initialization gates and cleanup paths handle denial, faults, revocation, and failed loads. Tests cover configuration fingerprints, cleanup, and in-flight callbacks.
Add callback fixtures and document the scope
crates/tinybus/examples/*, crates/tinybus/Cargo.toml, docs/modules/attest/README.md, scripts/{check-coverage.sh,test-e2e.ps1,test-e2e.sh}
Examples and native module fixtures exercise regular and confidential calls. Test scripts build and supply the fixture. Documentation describes callback limits, loading, and revocation.

Merge Risk | 🔵 Low · up to 7e38f

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7e38f

The scoped callback feature looks ready to merge. One narrow lifecycle issue remains: if a module's ordinary shutdown exceeds its deadline, it can be reported as faulted, and retrying the stop may be refused. Fixing this is a small, localized follow-up. The earlier documentation and plaintext-configuration concerns are resolved.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7e38f

The new callback authority is restricted by exact identity, endpoint and lifecycle checks within the existing host trust boundary. No security bypass was identified in the inspected paths. Already-started provider work is not automatically undone, and authorization for actual audit, prompt or secret-storage operations remains integration-specific.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new routing permission is confined to declared host methods for one verified loaded peer and one local recipient. It does not isolate malicious native code: an admitted module already shares the host address space and can access host memory independently of the bus. That wider process-level exposure predates this PR; tenant and data-store exposure depends on the hosting integration.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The exception requires a unique destination, preserves expected-owner checks and matches the broker-stamped sender against the bound module peer. Aliases do not select callback capabilities. Ordinary unauthenticated interface dispatch is rejected, and contextual dispatch repeats authorization after routing.
  • observed — For calls to the unique callback destination, the pending reply captures that destination as the expected responder. Brokered replies from other peers are not accepted; successful confidential replies must retain confidentiality. Broker-originated errors are an explicit exception. These reply checks are unchanged by the PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Callback reinitialization rejects changed configuration and requires the existing module to be Ready or Serving. A transport fault makes callback liveness and readiness false; a later READY notification does not clear the fault. Recovery cannot transfer the old binding to a replacement module instance.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — When integrating state-changing providers, combine domain authorization and post-await liveness checks with provider-side transaction or completion fences where late writes matter. Use idempotent operations and explicit recovery for uncertain writes rather than treating callback revocation as transactional rollback.

Extend the eager native setup callback test to assert that the live
retained callback config does not keep secret-bearing JSON after
initialization, and that reinitialization compares configs by value so
numerically equivalent JSON is accepted while a genuinely different
config is rejected.

Callback configuration is now hashed to a SHA-256 fingerprint at admission
and reinitialization, so the host no longer retains secret-bearing JSON and
immutability checks compare fingerprints. The transport reinitialize path
takes the already-serialized secret bytes, and the proxy docs clarify how
scoped host callbacks obtain authority without artifact attestation.

The staged_module helper is no longer Unix-only: on Windows it repairs the
staging directory's ACL through the release-cache path so the loader's real
admission gate still applies, and the call sites drop their cfg(unix) guards.
Each fixture now gets its own directory because the SDK installs a global
tracing subscriber, so reusing a DLL path would share state across hosts.

The Windows-only call in the staged module test helper now uses the crate-relative path to secure_release_cache, matching how the function is reached elsewhere and keeping the test compiling under cfg(windows).

🟡 Minor · Do not mark an ordinary stop as a module fault. · transport.rs:519-521

crates/tinybus/src/module/transport.rs:519-521
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not mark an ordinary stop as a module fault.

stop_sync calls terminate_waiters() before shutdown_sync(), and terminate_waiters() stores faulted = true. If shutdown exceeds its deadline, stop_inner returns StopError::Started without setting ModuleState::Stopped. The module can then be reported as Faulted, and later lifecycle operations can return ModuleUnavailable, which prevents retrying the stop.

Only terminate waiters when initialization never started. Preserve the module state when an ordinary shutdown fails.
