Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328 (phase 7, audit).

Review of v0.6.0 confirmed existing coverage for: single ordered AuditKind2 stream (policy/approval/judge/shell/execution/sandbox), 0600 + fd-relative opens on Unix, restricted DACL on Windows, pre-commit rotation failure denying before journal append (windows_rename_denied_before_commit_then_same_retry_commits_once), required audit denying pre-execution and optional audit degraded without a fabricated receipt (audit_native_contract example).

This PR adds the missing spec section documenting Audit vs Audit2 and a test pinning that legacy Audit is not served while AuditKind2 keeps every legacy kind's wire name.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified audit event ordering, receipt requirements, file protections, and failure handling.
    • Documented how required and optional audit modes handle failures and degraded health.
  • Tests
    • Added checks for audit method availability and consistent serialization of legacy audit kinds and their newer counterparts.

… unserved

critique

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: incomplete; unanswered: docs/specs/security-module.md
  • Lane summary: The change adds a pure test asserting the legacy `Audit` method is absent from the advertised METHODS list and that each legacy `AuditKind` variant serializes identically to its `AuditKind2` counterpart; the reviewed definitions (`names::METHODS` and the snake_case-renamed `AuditKind`/`AuditKind2` enums) match the test's assumptions, and the change touches no production code. 1 file could not be reviewed: docs/specs/security-module.md. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `a2986edf8dd6`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

security

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The added test only asserts released-name and serde-encoding facts about `AuditKind`/`AuditKind2` against existing definitions in `future.rs`, `audit.rs` and `names.rs`; it introduces no runtime, input-handling or dependency changes, and the assertions match the definitions I read. No security or correctness defect found in this file. 1 file was not security-reviewed: docs/specs/security-module.md (prose or tabular data). _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `a2986edf8dd6`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The PR adds a unit test in audit_tests.rs plus a documentation section in docs/specs/security-module.md; no production code changed, so there is no behaviour that could regress. The test asserts real invariants (AUDIT is absent from METHODS, AUDIT2 present, and each legacy AuditKind serializes identically to its AuditKind2 counterpart, with Shell as the added category) — these assertions can genuinely fail if the wire vocabulary drifts. I verified the symbols the test relies on (crate::names::METHODS, names::methods::AUDIT/AUDIT2, AuditKind, AuditKind2) — they are the names the test exercises, not lookups needed for the verdict: the assertions compare serialized output, so a wrong rename or serde rename would fail the assertion itself. I did not fetch the definition of names::METHODS, so I cannot confirm AUDIT truly is absent from the served list today; but if it were present the new assertion would fail, which is the point. No defect found. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `a2986edf8dd6`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds a docs section contrasting the reserved legacy `Audit` member with the served `Audit2` member, plus a test asserting `Audit` is absent from `METHODS`, `Audit2` is present, every legacy `AuditKind` variant serializes identically under `AuditKind2`, and `Shell` serializes as "shell". The assertions match what I read in `names.rs` (`AUDIT` is defined but not listed in `METHODS`; `AUDIT2` is listed) and in `audit.rs`/`future.rs` (the five shared variants under `rename_all = "snake_case"`, plus `Shell`), so the change is accurate and safe to merge. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `a2986edf8dd6`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

📝 Walkthrough

The security-module specification now defines the Audit2 contract, including event ordering, receipts, storage protections, and failure handling. A test checks the audit method list and serialization for legacy and version-two audit kinds.

Changes: Audit2 Contract

Layer / File(s) Summary
Audit2 contract and compatibility checks
docs/specs/security-module.md, crates/tinysecurity-bus/src/audit_tests.rs
The specification describes Audit2 behavior, receipts, storage protections, and failure handling. The test checks the method list and audit-kind serialization.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 36b87

The specification omits NativeRoutine, and the compatibility tests leave gaps in its wire-name coverage and in checking that legacy Audit is not served. These are bounded documentation and test-assurance issues; the current runtime exports Audit2, so the PR is mergeable with follow-up.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/tinysecurity-bus/src/audit_tests.rs: Adds a test checking the audit method list, serialization equivalence for the five legacy audit kinds, and the "shell" serialization of the additional version-two kind.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/specs/security-module.md: Adds the Audit versus Audit2 contract: only Audit2/AuditSink2 is served; legacy audit names and boolean receipts are reserved. Defines ordered event batches and exact receipts, audited pre-execution and separate terminal events, platform-specific local-file protections, rotation failure behavior, and required versus optional audit failure outcomes.

P2 Badge Document both new AuditKind2 categories

AuditKind2 also adds NativeRoutine, which is absent from legacy AuditKind and serializes as native_routine; the preceding sentence even includes native-routine in the stream vocabulary. Calling shell the sole addition therefore misstates the accepted wire contract and can lead consumers comparing the two versions to assume native_routine cannot occur. Update this specification and the matching test comment to identify both added categories.

Test the served interface, not only names::METHODS.

names::METHODS covers capability enumeration. serve_policy registers PolicyService without that list, and the module export list is separate. Therefore this test can pass if Audit is added to the runtime interface or export metadata. Add a direct runtime assertion that the served proxy does not expose names::methods::AUDIT. The assertion must distinguish an unavailable member from a callable member that rejects its payload.
