Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328.

A trusted multi-tenant host needs to remove each tenant's own provider key (for example a Composio key) from that tenant's tool output. The only exact-credential registry is init-only, so adding a key means a process-wide Reinit, which serializes tenants and puts one tenant's keys in another's calls.

RedactWith is a confidential member taking a RedactRequest plus secrets for this call only. They supplement the initialization registry, are bounded like it (128 literals, 4..=4096 bytes, 16384 total, no marker collision) and are never echoed. Compiled registries are cached (32, FIFO) by a digest of the literals, so repeated calls do not recompile the rule set; an evicted entry is rebuilt on demand. Additive: contract 1.16; a 1.16 host refuses a 1.15 module.

Tests: redact crate unit tests (every text mode, supplement not replace, no leakage across calls, cache reuse and bound, base fingerprint, out-of-bounds literals, oversized text, poisoned cache), bus wire test, in-process confidentiality refusal, and the attested native module answer in the audit_native_contract example (run locally against the built module). fmt, clippy 1.99 -D warnings and workspace tests green locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added per-call credential redaction. Supplied credentials supplement the initialized registry for that request only and are not reused by later calls.
    • Added contract version 1.16 support for RedactWith.
  • Documentation

    • Documented credential limits, confidentiality, and compatibility between contract versions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Invalid credential inputs are rejected without exposing the supplied values.

A trusted multi-tenant host redacts each tenant's own provider key from that tenant's output without a process-wide Reinit. The literals extend the initialization registry for one call, are bounded like it, and compiled registries are cached by a digest of the literals.

📝 Walkthrough

Contract 1.16 adds RedactWith for redaction with per-call secrets. The redaction crate adds a bounded cache for extended redactors, and the module exposes the new confidential method.

Changes: Per-call redaction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contract 1.16 request and wire format
crates/tinysecurity-bus/src/redact.rs, crates/tinysecurity-bus/src/names.rs, crates/tinysecurity-bus/src/lib.rs, crates/tinysecurity-bus/tests/*, MODULE.md, README.md
Adds RedactWithRequest and registers RedactWith. The contract version advances to 1.16. Documentation describes per-call secret limits, confidentiality, and version compatibility. Wire tests cover serialization, debug redaction, and compatibility.
Extended redactor registry
crates/tinysecurity-redact/src/*, crates/tinysecurity/src/lib.rs
Adds ExtendedRedactors, which combines initialization secrets with per-call secrets and caches compiled redactors in a 32-entry digest-keyed cache. Tests cover redaction modes, secret isolation, validation, cache behavior, and cache-lock failure.
Module method and call behavior
crates/tinysecurity-module/src/adapter.rs, crates/tinysecurity-module/src/adapter_tests.rs, crates/tinysecurity-module/examples/audit_native_contract.rs
Adds confidential RedactWith handling to the module and shares an extended-redactor registry across services. Tests and the example check per-call redaction, call isolation, and errors that do not echo secrets.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e2a7

Concurrent per-call redaction requests can queue behind one another while a new secret set is compiled, which adds latency under multi-tenant load. Results stay correct, so this can be addressed in a follow-up or before merge at low cost.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0e2a7

The new request preserves call-to-call separation, but invalid input can consume resources shared by other tenants before rejection. Exploitation requires access to the confidential channel or a host that forwards attacker-controlled requests.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new per-call path enforces bounds after resource-consuming work. It clones text and hashes all supplied literals before validation, then clones the literal list under the shared cache mutex before checking registry limits. With valid new literals, oversized text also causes compilation and cache insertion before rejection. Repeated invalid requests can therefore consume shared redaction capacity and displace other tenants' entries. Confidential admission limits reachability, but the 32-entry cap bounds retained entries rather than request work.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The shared-cache contention scope includes nonempty-literal RedactWith calls served by the same module process, potentially spanning tenants of one host. Empty-literal calls bypass this mutex. Broader process resource effects depend on deployment and concurrency limits that were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to submit confidential RedactWith requests can send oversized literal lists to induce hashing and cloning beyond the declared registry budget, or combine oversized text with distinct valid literals to compile and replace cache entries before rejection. Repetition can impair other callers' redaction availability. No credential disclosure or fail-open response was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — RedactWith is marked confidential. The inspected test expects an unattested public call to be refused without echoing its literal, and the native example uses confidential calls. The request contract assigns per-tenant credential selection to a trusted host; it does not introduce a tenant identity or privileged credential lookup.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Base and call literals both participate in cache identity, preventing ordinary reuse of a registry built for a different initialization configuration. Tests cover supplementation, cross-call separation and base separation. These controls address behavioral isolation, not resource fairness or credential erasure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate text size and literal budgets before cloning, fingerprinting or acquiring the shared cache mutex. Explicitly document the distinction between call-scoped application and cached credential retention, including any required cleanup policy.

P1 Badge Correct Secret's initialization-only transport documentation

At this new field, crate::Secret becomes an RPC argument, but its public rustdoc in policy.rs still says it is initialization-only and that no bus invocation contains it; crates/tinysecurity-redact/README.md likewise says exact credentials live only in RedactorConfig and omits RedactWith from the host invocation surface. This leaves security-sensitive transport guidance directly false, so update the type and module documentation with the confidential per-call semantics in this commit.

P2 Badge Validate per-call limits before combining registries

When the initialization registry already contains literals, appending the request literals and rerunning Redactor::new applies the 128-literal and 16,384-byte ceilings to the combined vector rather than to RedactWithRequest.secrets. For example, a valid base registry with 128 literals rejects every nonempty request—even one valid four-byte per-call secret—despite the contract documenting those bounds for the extra literals that supplement the base. Validate the request collection separately and compile the union without charging existing base entries against the per-call quota.

The member is confidential, so in-process dispatch cannot call it; the changed-line coverage gate needs the body exercised in a unit test.

P1 Badge Add the required spec and implementation plan

This introduces contract 1.16 and its security-sensitive per-call credential semantics directly in implementation/module documentation, but a repository-wide search finds no RedactWith behavior in docs/specs/ or docs/plans/. Add the accepted behavior and constraints to a spec, then link an implementation-ordered plan, so this contract change follows the repository's required design sequence and has a durable source for its confidentiality, isolation, and limit invariants.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Release the cache lock before you build a new Redactor.

entries stays locked from Line 53 to Line 66. Redactor::new runs inside that span. It validates the literals and compiles every pattern plus the Scanner.

  • Effect: While one call builds a registry, every other RedactWith call waits on the lock. Calls that would hit the cache also wait. The spawn_blocking threads are blocked the whole time.
  • When it happens: A multi-tenant host with more than 32 distinct key sets keeps evicting entries, so builds are frequent. Each tenant's call then waits for builds started by other tenants.

Do the lookup under the lock, then drop the lock. Build without the lock. Take the lock again to insert, and re-check for the key first. Two parallel misses for the same key can both build. That costs extra time but is still correct, because the registries are immutable.
