SDK consumers could not inspect runtime omission and budget receipts through the public read types, and unformatted SDK reads charged CLI JSON whitespace to their context budgets. Expose shared receipt metadata while retaining precise first-page fields, sparse producer pages and explicit whole-result omission branches. Use compact complete envelopes for SDK packing and session debits unless a renderer is explicitly selected.

Regression evidence includes failing-before TypeScript and accounting controls, packed declarations, real Node/Bun consumers, both continuation layers, explicit JSON/TOON accounting and infeasible budgets. Strengthen the shared recurrence family, document the contract, close both items with structured validation, and generate the changelog through pm-changelog 2026.10.21. New reports and operational observations are tracked through pm with unrelated work unclaimed.

Tracking: pm-gh1551, pm-gh1552.

Fixes #1551
Fixes #1552

Validation: linked packed Node/Bun acceptance, SDK accounting/transport tests, typecheck, terminal defect evidence, history/governance and package-owned changelog checks pass. Reviewed source head ba04605 passed all 26 required contexts and exact 100/100/100/100 hosted coverage, including native/packed and performance gates. Original local full-run timing failures and a qualified CLI floor overrun remain documented; affected cases passed sequentially. Sourcery quota and Greptile trial limits remain unavailable coverage. The one CodeRabbit documentation-link finding was resolved with the explicit packaged-docs policy and actual package-content proof.

Summary by Sourcery

Expose SDK read receipts and make default SDK budget accounting use compact complete envelopes unless an output renderer is selected.

New Features:

  • Expose shared omission and budget receipt metadata through public SDK read result types and entrypoints.

Bug Fixes:

  • Charge unformatted SDK reads and session usage against compact envelopes instead of whitespace-expanded CLI JSON output.

Enhancements:

  • Preserve precise first-page receipt fields, continuation references, and explicit whole-result budget omission distinctions across read contracts.

Documentation:

  • Document SDK receipt typing and compact-versus-rendered output accounting behavior.

Tests:

  • Add SDK accounting, receipt, packed declaration, and continuation coverage across Node and Bun consumers and output formats.

Chores:

  • Generate the changelog entries and update project tracking records for the two fixes.

Expose shared omission, budget, session and truncation receipt metadata on
raw list/context/search/get results and guarantee omission metadata on
finalized first pages. Preserve precise fields, budget omission branches,
session reference rows and sparse producer continuations across every
published SDK entrypoint.

Stop forcing the CLI JSON renderer at the structured SDK boundary. Use
compact UTF-8 envelopes for unformatted estimates, packing and session
debits while retaining explicit JSON/TOON renderer accounting.

Add failing-before declaration and accounting regressions, compile packed
consumer fixtures in one TypeScript invocation, and exercise actual Node
and Bun artifacts with both continuation layers and infeasible budgets.
Strengthen the shared recurrence policy and document the public contract.

Record live GitHub issue lineage, dependency/security/release/observability
evidence and original local admission failures through pm. Keep unrelated
follow-ups unclaimed and require exact-head hosted coverage and performance
admission before merge.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • SDK results for list, context, search, and get now include omission receipts, with optional output, session, and budget-truncation details. These types are available through the SDK’s public entry points.
  • Improvements
    • SDK budget estimates and session usage now reflect the selected output format, including JSON and TOON.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the read-output contracts to describe receipt availability and output-budget accounting.

The SDK now exposes read-output receipts in its read-result types. Structured read accounting uses the selected output representation. The pull request also updates SDK tests, documentation, recurrence checks, and PM tracking records.

Changes: SDK read-output contracts and accounting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Receipt metadata and public result types
src/sdk/read-output-contracts.ts, src/sdk/query/*, src/sdk/core.ts, src/sdk/query.ts, src/sdk/runtime.ts, tests/types/*, docs/READ_OUTPUT_CONTRACTS.md
The new PmReadOutputMetadata type groups the required omission receipt with optional accounting receipts. Query results and SDK entrypoint return types expose this metadata, with type tests and documentation covering the contracts.
Selected output format and read accounting
src/sdk/runtime.ts, tests/fixtures/read-output/*, tests/integration/read-output/*, tests/integration/sdk/*, docs/READ_OUTPUT_CONTRACTS.md
The dispatcher no longer forces non-attestation actions to JSON before attaching read-output contracts and finalizing context usage. Tests check estimates and session spending across output formats.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(sdk): expose read receipts and honor compact context budgets" matches the main changes: receipt metadata is exposed on SDK read result types (ListResultBase, ContextResult, GetResult, SearchResultBase, PmReadOutputMetadata), and SDK accounting now uses compact JSON unless a renderer is explicitly selected (dispatchAction no longer forces json). The title is concise, specific, and follows conventional commit style.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1551] Typed receipt exposure: src/sdk/read-output-contracts.ts adds PmReadOutputMetadata with a required omission_receipt and optional read_output, read_session, and output_budget_truncation. ListResultBase, ContextResult, SearchResultBase, and GetResult extend Partial<PmReadOutputMetadata> for raw query results. Public list, context, search, and get methods and standalone functions in src/sdk/runtime.ts return ListResult/ContextResult/SearchResult/GetResult & PmReadOutputMetadata, so finalized first pages type omission_receipt as required. The budget-exceeded variant (PmReadOutputBudgetExceeded) keeps its own shape, so whole-result budget omissions stay distinct. Runtime receipt contents are unchanged. tests/types/read-output-contracts.test-d.ts adds compile-time checks for these properties, and tests/types/producer-continuation.test-d.ts expects continuation pages to reject omission_receipt access. Not independently verified: the ReadPromise conditional mapping for the budget-exceeded branch, and the type-test results (reported in the PR, not re-run).

[#1552] Compact accounting: src/sdk/runtime.ts dispatchAction no longer forces options.resolvedOutputFormat = "json" for non-attestation actions. Structured SDK reads therefore no longer charge pretty JSON. tests/integration/sdk/sdk-consumer-receipts.integration.spec.ts runs list with default, json, and toon rendering at outputBudget 10000 and 1. For each case it asserts read_output.estimated_tokens equals ceil(UTF-8 bytes of the rendering / 4). For the default case the rendering is JSON.stringify(page), which is the compact envelope. For budget 10000 it also asserts read_session.spent_this_call_tokens and next_state.spent_tokens equal that estimate. The budget-1 case covers the infeasible path. tests/fixtures/read-output/packed-continuation-consumer.mjs checks the same byte-based estimate across packed continuation. docs/READ_OUTPUT_CONTRACTS.md states that SDK estimates, packing, and session debits use the selected representation. Not independently verified: the test runs, the packing decision at other budgets, and the hosted timing gates. The PR reports a qualified CLI transport timing result (365 ms against 362 ms). That result concerns performance admission, not a linked-issue requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Code and test changes map to the two linked issues. src/sdk/runtime.ts and src/sdk/read-output-contracts.ts implement the typed receipts and the compact-default accounting. src/sdk/core.ts, src/sdk/query.ts, src/sdk/query/*.ts, and src/sdk/query/search/types.ts only re-export or extend the shared metadata type. docs/READ_OUTPUT_CONTRACTS.md documents the contracts. The fixture and integration test updates cover the new accounting and the explicit renderer. The tests/integration/sdk-context-integrity change from --json to --output-format json and the tests/integration/read-output composed-continuation change keep explicit renderer selection in line with the new default. config/defect-recurrence-policy.json strengthens the output-budget recurrence family, as the PR description states.

The .agents/pm changes are tracker records and comment history: issue and history files for #1551, #1552, #1553, pm-session-reference-recovery, pm-wb25c1, pm-prrlce, pm-0trehk, pm-bj7rq0, and a timestamp in .managed-extensions.json. They change no product code. The PR description discloses them as pm-recorded follow-ups and observations. The unrelated items (#1553, pm-session-reference-recovery, dependency cooldown, release status, reliability comments) do not change runtime behavior. They are tracking metadata, so they do not demonstrate unrelated product changes.

Reviewer's Guide

The SDK now exposes receipt metadata consistently across raw and finalized read contracts, while the native dispatcher preserves compact default JSON versus explicitly selected renderers for accurate budget packing and session accounting; expanded type, packed-consumer, continuation, and accounting tests cover the public surface and edge cases.
