fix(sdk): explicit history ordering and lossless context compaction - #1619
History consumers could not select chronological replay, and adding a limit silently changed display direction. Add order: "oldest_first" | "newest_first" to the SDK, CLI and MCP. Selection still takes the latest N entries; display order then applies consistently to projected rows and value diffs. Compact/provenance default to newest-first with or without a limit; full reads retain oldest-first. Chronological compact replay should now request --order oldest_first explicitly.
Context tables now declare compact string-list and shared-null metadata and choose the smallest lossless TOON rendering. The public decoder restores absent keys, nulls, empty arrays and escaped values; SDK query results and JSON retain their original data. Native deadline/reminder/calendar fixtures and arbitrary-JSON round trips cover the change.
Validation: 48 linked history tests and 98 linked context/output tests pass after review fixes. A separate 36-test run covers the top-level runtime order, all native agenda event kinds, packed Node/Bun continuations, and the scale benchmark. Typecheck, packed npx/bunx smoke (9 packages), pinned semantic negative controls, terminal defect evidence, tracker integrity, and all 47 tracker context assertions pass. The latest pm-changelog package generated and verified both entries in CHANGELOG.md; both implementation items are closed and released.
The full local coverage rerun passes: 879 test files, 11,522 executed tests, and exactly 100% statements/branches/functions/lines with zero uncovered counts. Exposing the host npm module through NODE_PATH resolved the first broad run's module-resolution failure, and the scale benchmark passes with its original timeout. Graph/record integrity and governed mutation checks also pass. Local static validation still fails the unchanged transport-floor limit; untouched main also fails that limit on the same qualified Node 26 host. Exact-head hosted static validation passed before merge and on merged main.
The requested operational audit is included as PM evidence: no open GitHub security alerts, advisory checks cover 567 locked packages, and dependency updates remain governed by the seven-day cooldown and existing major-upgrade owners. Published 2026.10.28 npm/npx/Bun/bunx verification passes separately from this unreleased change. Post-merge Sentry and telemetry delivery are verified: a fresh context trace, a matched successful start/finish pair within 0.54 seconds, and an empty remote queue. The fresh required observability gate passes with zero blocking Sentry issues, 5.98% telemetry error rate under the unchanged 6% limit, and zero missing error-code rows. Earlier failing aggregate samples remain in the PM audit trail; historical pairing retains its separate owner. The post-merge Release Reliability monitor remains red for dispatch_window (the native scheduled run arrived 380.45 minutes late) and rolling nightly recurrence; the independent daily dispatcher published successfully and the same-day guard prevented another release. These operational failures remain tracked under their existing owners. New ranking report #1618 is documented in pm-gh1618, open and unclaimed. Sourcery approved the revised delivery after an initial quota refusal. Greptile is unavailable because its trial ended, and Cubic reached its monthly free review limit; neither unavailable response is approval. CodeRabbit confirmed all six fixes and completed its final full review with no actionable findings at 93843b5. All required checks and exact-commit CodeFactor/DeepScan evidence passed before merge. Main f8ca152 has the identical reviewed tree and passes analyzer readiness. Post-merge CI 40744841097 completed successfully, as did Security and Script Quality, CodeQL, Docs, OSSF Scorecard and CodSpeed; the separate Release Reliability monitor remains red as described above.
…osslessly
Expose oldest_first and newest_first through SDK, CLI and MCP history contracts. Apply direction to every projection and value diff independently of the latest-entry window, retaining full-history defaults and documenting compact-window compatibility.
Extend the table codec with optional string-list and shared-null declarations. Select the smallest lossless TOON representation while preserving exact SDK and JSON facts, reserved keys, sparse cells and delimiter fallbacks.
Add persistent regression and native context fixtures, update generated contracts, and record live release, dependency and observability evidence through the canonical PM items. Full quality admission and reviewed closure follow on this branch.
…budget
Register the explicit history direction in canonical CLI flag metadata and generated invocation contracts. Account for exactly one added flag and shorten duplicated help prose instead of expanding the help token ceiling.
Record passing linked tests, pinned semantic negative controls, public release verification, fresh Sentry trace details and separate telemetry and historical reliability limitations in the PM records.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
History results can be ordered oldest-first or newest-first across compact, provenance, and full views. Limited results select the latest matching entries before ordering. Compact and provenance views default to newest-first; full history defaults to oldest-first.
Eligible nested table output can use compact encodings for string lists and all-null columns, reducing output size while preserving values when decoded. JSON output is unchanged.
Documentation
Updated CLI and SDK guidance to describe history ordering and compact table output.
The pull request adds explicit history display ordering across CLI, SDK, and MCP interfaces. It also adds compact table-row encoding for eligible string arrays and all-null columns, with restoration metadata. Operational records include registry, telemetry, validation, and release updates.
Changes: History display ordering
Layer / File(s)
Summary
History ordering option and query behavior src/sdk/query/history.ts, src/cli/register-list-query.ts, src/sdk/cli-contracts/*, src/sdk/runtime-input.ts, tests/fixtures/contracts/full.json, sdk/public-surface.json, .agents/pm/history/pm-gh1617.jsonl, .agents/pm/issues/pm-gh1617.toon
The history interfaces add order with oldest_first and newest_first values. The query validates the option and applies projection-specific defaults after selecting the latest matching entries.
History ordering documentation and validation docs/COMMANDS.md, docs/SDK.md, src/cli/help-content.ts, tests/unit/sdk/query/history-recency.spec.ts, CHANGELOG.md
The documentation and tests cover order defaults, latest-entry selection, and explicit ordering across projections and interfaces. Value diffs retain full-chain replay behavior.
Compact table output
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Compact table-row encoding and decoding src/sdk/output/table-rows.ts, sdk/public-surface.json
The codec adds list-delimiter, all-null-column, and column-order metadata. Compact mode joins eligible string arrays and omits columns that are explicitly null in every row.
Renderer selection and round-trip coverage src/core/output/output.ts, docs/OUTPUT_PROJECTION_CONTRACTS.md, tests/unit/sdk/output/table-rows.spec.ts, .agents/pm/history/pm-gh1603.jsonl, .agents/pm/issues/pm-gh1603.toon
The renderer compares compact and standard table encodings with expanded output and selects the shortest candidate by byte length. Tests cover restoration, JSON preservation, and encoding edge cases.

Explanation
[#1617] The PR adds order: "oldest_first" | "newest_first" to the SDK, CLI, and MCP history surfaces. It selects the latest N entries before display ordering and applies the order to compact, diff, provenance, and full projections. It documents defaults and tests explicit and default order with and without limits. [#1603] The PR adds list and shared-null metadata, uses lossless compact TOON encoding, and restores absent keys, nulls, empty arrays, and escaped values. Tests cover brief, standard, and full context output, native agenda kinds, JSON preservation, arbitrary-JSON round trips, and compact fallback behavior. The excluded generated flag document is not required to establish either objective.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The implementation, tests, documentation, changelog, and validation record pm-bj7rq0 support [#1617] or [#1603]. The PR also changes unrelated operational or tracking records: .agents/pm/chores/pm-ogzvx6.toon, .agents/pm/history/pm-ogzvx6.jsonl, .agents/pm/extensions/.managed-extensions.json, .agents/pm/issues/pm-xq09zu.toon, .agents/pm/history/pm-xq09zu.jsonl, .agents/pm/issues/pm-7zs0.toon, .agents/pm/reminders/pm-7zs0.toon, .agents/pm/history/pm-7zs0.jsonl, .agents/pm/issues/pm-gh1618.toon, and .agents/pm/history/pm-gh1618.jsonl. These records concern dependency alerts, telemetry limitations, release reliability, extension timestamps, and a separate ranking issue. They do not implement either linked issue.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated operational and tracking records from this PR, or move them to separate changes recorded outside this delivery. Keep the [#1617] and [#1603] implementation, documentation, tests, changelog, and directly relevant validation evidence.

Compact agenda entries by omitting repeated null event-only fields from brief and standard context output while preserving lossless decoding and keeping JSON/full data intact.
Provide an explicit oldest-first/newest-first option in the SDK and CLI, applied consistently across history projections and value diffs, whether or not a limit is used.

Review comments at @docs/OUTPUT_PROJECTION_CONTRACTS.md:
- Line 482: Update the earlier toon_encoding description to state that nested
and heterogeneous arrays may be rendered as a smaller encoded table when
selected by the renderer, rather than always remaining expanded; keep it
consistent with the declared encoding metadata consumers must honor.
Review comments at @src/sdk/cli-contracts/tool-parameter-tables.ts:
- Line 770: Add history-specific metadata for the history tool’s order parameter
in the tool parameter tables: provide a description and examples that match the
oldest_first and newest_first enum values. Regenerate the contract fixture so
the generated history schema reflects this metadata.
Review comments at @src/sdk/cli-contracts/tool-schema.ts:
- Line 768: Update optionsWithAuthor for history to hoist the schema’s top-level
order into the options read by the history handler, preserving the existing
nested-options behavior. Add or update a test to send order: "oldest_first" at
the top level and verify history uses that ordering.
Review comments at @src/sdk/output/table-rows.ts:
- Line 75: Update the table-row encoding that builds nullColumns and
null_columns to preserve each omitted null column’s original position in the
row, and use that position when restoring null columns so decoded objects retain
their original key order.
Review comments at @tests/unit/sdk/output/table-rows.spec.ts:
- Line 171: Update the native context test using runContext to set a limit of at
least 30 so scheduled events are included in result.agenda.events, then assert
that deadlines, reminders, and scheduled events are all present before the
restoration and token-count checks.
