feat(api-websockets-standalone): ping every websocket from the server every 30 seconds - #6136
Proxies and load balancers close a websocket that carries no traffic for a while: 60 seconds by default on nginx and AWS ALB. The admin app's own ping comes every 5 minutes. So behind either of them, every idle admin tab lost its websocket about once a minute and reconnected. Messages sent in that gap were lost, and every reconnect wrote and deleted a row in the connection registry.
The standalone server now pings every open websocket itself.
What changed
NodeWsAdapter (the class that wraps the ws library in api-websockets-standalone):
Every 30 seconds it sends a WebSocket ping frame on every open socket. A ping frame is part of the WebSocket protocol, not an application message. Browsers answer it with a pong by themselves.
That traffic keeps any 60-second idle timeout from closing the connection.
A socket that has not answered by the next ping is cut. That catches connections that died without closing, such as a laptop that went to sleep or a dropped network, within a minute. Before, they stayed until the heartbeat's stale cleanup, after 15 minutes. Cutting the socket runs its normal close handler, which removes the connection from the registry.
stop() clears the timer.
The interval is 30 seconds. Tests get a shorter one from NodeWsAdapterImpl.withPingInterval(); the constructor takes nothing, because DI builds the adapter with no dependencies.
What did not change
The admin's own ping (WEBSOCKETS_HEARTBEAT_INTERVAL, every 5 minutes). That constant is shared with AWS, where API Gateway's idle timeout is 10 minutes and messages are billed.
The registry. Pong frames are not application messages, so they do not update lastSeen and add no database writes.
AWS. This is in the standalone adapter only.
Tests
api-websockets-standalone, 58 passing, 2 new in NodeWsAdapter.test.ts, with a real ws client and a 50 ms interval:
A client that answers gets at least 3 pings in 5 intervals and stays open.
A paused client, which reads nothing and so never answers, is closed on the server side.
Not run yet: behind a real nginx or ALB with an idle tab.
… every 30 seconds
Proxies and load balancers close a connection that carries nothing for
a while: 60 seconds by default on nginx and AWS ALB. The admin's own
ping comes every 5 minutes, so behind either one every idle tab lost
its socket about once a minute and reconnected, and messages sent in
the gap were lost.
NodeWsAdapter now sends a WebSocket ping frame on every open socket
every 30 seconds. Browsers answer ping frames by themselves, so no
client code changes, the AWS side is untouched, and nothing extra is
written to the registry. A socket that has not answered by the next
ping is cut, so a connection that died without closing is noticed
within a minute instead of after the heartbeat's 15.

NodeWsAdapterImpl now sends periodic WebSocket pings, tracks pong responses, and terminates sockets that do not respond. The interval is configurable. Tests cover responsive and paused clients.

The adapter schedules periodic pings, tracks connection and pong responses, pings responsive open sockets, and terminates sockets without a recorded response. It clears the timer during stop(). Tests cover responsive and paused clients.

…for DI
The ping interval was an optional constructor parameter. NodeWsAdapter
is registered through DI with no dependencies, and the DI types count
every constructor parameter, so the build failed with TS2322. The
interval is now a private field, 30 seconds, and tests get a shorter one
from NodeWsAdapterImpl.withPingInterval().

…pings in the test
A second start() replaced the WebSocketServer and the ping timer without
stopping the first, and stop() could only reach the newest. It now
returns when the adapter is already started.
The ping test waited a fixed 250 ms for three pings at a 50 ms interval;
a slow runner could deliver only two. It now waits until the third ping
arrives, up to 5 seconds.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The test only requires three pings within 5000 ms. A regression from 50 ms to 1500 ms per ping would still pass because the third ping arrives within the timeout. Set the timeout to PING_INTERVAL * 5 so the test detects a substantially slower cadence.
Suggested fix
- // Waits for the third ping, not a fixed time, so a slow runner cannot cut the count short.- await vi.waitFor(() => expect(pings).toBeGreaterThanOrEqual(3), { timeout: 5000 });+ // Require the third ping within five configured intervals.+ await vi.waitFor(() => expect(pings).toBeGreaterThanOrEqual(3), {+ timeout: PING_INTERVAL * 5+ });

Update the ping-count wait in the test to use `PING_INTERVAL * 5` as its timeout
instead of a fixed 5000 ms, so the third ping must arrive within five configured
