Summary

  • In a Wayland session the pin did nothing: only the compositor may keep a window on top, and winit's set_window_level is a no-op there. Clicking the pin now restarts QuickPlay under XWayland, where it works (GNOME, KDE) and the playlist docks again, with the same queue, track, position and play or pause. Unpinning restarts it under Wayland. Windows, macOS and X11 sessions are unchanged.
  • How (src/restart.rs): the state goes to a private file ($XDG_RUNTIME_DIR when private, else the temp dir; mode 0600, random name); a new copy starts with --restart-state <file> --after-pid <pid>, waits for the old one to exit, builds its event loop with with_x11() and resumes. XWayland is probed (XInitThreads, XOpenDisplay) at a pinned start and on the click only, since in GNOME the first X client starts XWayland. If the window still cannot be made under XWayland, the process relaunches itself on Wayland with --no-xwayland (winit allows one event loop per process).
  • The pin's tooltip says what a click will do; a session without XWayland says why it cannot pin. New strings in all eight languages.
  • Reviewed with open-code-review and CodeRabbit before opening; their five findings are fixed in the second commit.

Breaking: none. Three internal command-line options (--restart-state, --after-pid, --no-xwayland) that a user has no reason to pass; --restart-state only reads (and deletes) a QuickPlay state file of this user's.

How I tested

On Fedora 44, GNOME 50 Wayland, with a separate config directory:

  • Pin while playing: the new window is an X11 window with _NET_WM_STATE_ABOVE; playback resumes at the same position (1760 ms) and keeps playing. Unpin: back on Wayland (no X11 window), position kept again (3445 ms).
  • XWayland unreachable (no XAUTHORITY): the click shows the status line and does not restart; a start with the pin already on runs on Wayland.
  • Simulated X11 window failure (a test-only patch, not in this PR), on a click and on a pinned start: QuickPlay comes back on Wayland with the same queue and position, or the same file.
  • cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings and cargo test on Windows 11, Fedora 44 and macOS 26.

Not covered: the visual difference between XWayland and Wayland at fractional scaling (the test display is at 100 %, where both look the same, and GNOME does not allow screenshots from a script). On that box from ssh, ALSA takes about 6 s to open and 3 s to close (aplay -d 1 takes 6 s; QuickPlay 1.0 does too), so the restart looks slow there; it was not measured in a desktop session.

Screenshots / clips

None (see above).

Summary by CodeRabbit

A Wayland compositor alone decides which window stays on top: winit's
set_window_level is a no-op there, so the pin did nothing. Pinned in a
Wayland session, QuickPlay now runs under XWayland, where the pin works
(GNOME, KDE) and the playlist docks again.

A click on the pin writes the queue, the current row, the position and
play or pause to a private file ($XDG_RUNTIME_DIR, mode 0600, random
name), starts a new copy with --restart-state and --after-pid, stops the
audio and closes. The new copy waits for the old one to exit (socket and
device), builds its event loop with with_x11() since the pin is on, and
picks up from the file; unpinning goes back to Wayland the same way.
XWayland is checked with XOpenDisplay before it is chosen, at start-up
when pinned and on the click only: winit builds one event loop per
process, so a failed X11 start cannot fall back, and in GNOME the first
X client starts XWayland. A session without it shows why it cannot pin.

The pin's tooltip says what a click will do, in the eight languages.
Tested on Fedora 44, GNOME 50 Wayland: pinned window carries
_NET_WM_STATE_ABOVE, playback resumes at the same position both ways, an
unreachable XWayland neither restarts nor stops QuickPlay from starting.
- The XWayland probe calls XInitThreads before XOpenDisplay, as winit
does: Xlib wants it first in a threaded program, and libX11 before 1.8
(Ubuntu 22.04 ships 1.7.5) does not make it by itself.
- When the window cannot be made under XWayland although the display
answered (window or OpenGL context), the process starts a copy of
itself on Wayland with --no-xwayland and the same state or files: winit
builds one event loop per process, and the previous QuickPlay has
already closed, so the queue was lost and nothing played.
- A restart whose predecessor is slow to exit keeps trying the
single-instance socket for ten more seconds; it used to run without one
for good, and a later launch then opened a second player.
- A paused track being restored is Loading too: pinning again before it
opened restarted it as playing. The pending load's autoplay is kept.
- ARCHITECTURE.md says where the state file goes when $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is
missing or not private, and describes the fallbacks.

Checked on Fedora 44 GNOME 50 with a simulated X11 window failure, on a
pin click and on a pinned start: QuickPlay comes back on Wayland with the
same queue and position.

Walkthrough

Layer / File(s) Summary
État et primitives de redémarrage
src/restart.rs, src/ipc.rs
src/main.rs, Cargo.toml, docs/ARCHITECTURE.md
src/app.rs, src/ui/widgets.rs, README.md

Merge Risk: Low · up to c333f

Unusual restart failures can lose playback continuity or permit a second window. These bounded risks need an owner decision before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to c333f

Switching to XWayland can expose the player’s windows to other clients authorized on the same X server. Existing pin preferences also select this behavior automatically. Restart-state protections limit filesystem exposure, but a failed ownership handoff can leave the replacement player running separately from the instance receiving subsequent launches.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: For launches previously using native Wayland, a saved pin preference now automatically selects the session’s X server. On a shared XWayland server permitting ordinary inter-client access, another authorized X11 client can observe or inject input into QuickPlay’s windows. This changes window isolation without changing process UID. The default-off preference and requirement for access to that X server limit exposure.
  • Low · reliability · observed: A resumed replacement skips normal IPC handoff and continues with no IPC server if socket takeover fails, including after both ten-second waits expire. The old process can remain the IPC owner while the replacement restores its own queue, splitting ownership of the visible player and subsequent launches. Normal waiting and the parent’s Stop command mitigate this path; simultaneous playback is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is the current user’s player state, displayed media information and player UI on the selected X server. No privilege elevation or new remote application endpoint is established. The X11 concern requires another client authorized on that server; it does not imply access to native Wayland windows or other users’ files.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The introduced display path is: saved pin preference or local pin action, session DISPLAY probe, forced X11 event loop, then player windows on that X server. Where inter-client access is allowed, a malicious authorized X11 client gains opportunities to observe or manipulate those windows. Same-user execution and an unchanged IPC protocol do not eliminate this display-level trust change.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The restart-state pathname can come directly from command-line arguments; internally generated launches supply the parent-created path. State validation occurs before reading and deletion. A supplied PID only controls bounded waiting, not process termination or a credential transition.
  • observed — The runtime-directory branch checks owner and permissions, but the fallback accepts std::env::temp_dir without equivalent directory validation. File ownership is checked using symlink_metadata, followed by separate pathname reads and deletion. These operations do not themselves bind validation to the opened object; cross-user replacement depends on directory protections not supplied here.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal execution waits for the parent and retries socket acquisition, while the parent requests immediate audio stop. However, replacement startup is not conditional on obtaining the single-instance socket. This is an ownership and failure-containment gap, not evidence of privilege escalation or guaranteed duplicate playback.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the X11 isolation tradeoff an explicit choice, including for previously saved pin preferences, rather than treating a window-level preference alone as consent to change display trust.
  • proposed — Require successful state acceptance and single-instance ownership before treating replacement startup as complete, with an explicit recovery outcome when either fails.
  • proposed — Use a verified private per-user handoff directory and validate and read through one non-symlink file handle, reducing dependence on temporary-directory mutation policy and pathname race assumptions.

In GNOME the first X client waits for XWayland to start, and the probe
ran on the UI thread, so the window could freeze for that long. It now
runs on a thread of its own; its answer is picked up in `logic`, and
pin clicks wait for it meanwhile.

Also tests the restart options of the command line: their values are
taken, the files after them kept, and a bad pid takes only its own
value.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
