Summary

A web radio or a podcast episode now plays through the play bar, and keeps playing when the listener leaves the page that started it.

Until now radio-page.tsx and podcasts-page.tsx each owned a private new Audio() and paused it on unmount, on purpose: the page held the only stop button, and the play bar had no way to show something with no position and no next track. This PR gives the play bar what it needs.

  • PlayerState gains an aside: aside (a station or an episode, or null), asidePlaying, asideError, and playLive(station), playEpisode(episode), toggleAside(), seekAside(seconds) and stopAside(only?). The existing members keep meaning the queue, so every current caller works as before.
  • Radio: the bar shows the station name and a localised "Live" badge, a stop/play button, a close button and the volume. There is no progress line, no seek, no next or previous, and no shuffle or repeat. Stopping a station drops its source, and starting it again rejoins the broadcast live instead of playing what was buffered.
  • Episode: the bar shows the title and the channel, with progress and seek. Its position goes through the same bookmark route the page used: every 15 s while it plays, on pause, on seek, and when it is closed. The bookmark is deleted when the episode ends. When it ends it stops, and it does not roll into the queue. The podcasts page reads the channel again after a save, so "resumes at" stays current.
  • One audible source: starting a station or an episode pauses the queue without clearing it. Playing a track (play, next, previous, or toggle from the playing screen) drops the aside. The queue element's play event drops it too, so this holds however playback starts.
  • The pages stop owning audio. Their buttons call the player, and their "now playing" and error states read from it. Deleting the station or episode that is playing stops it, by id, read from the player when the delete answers.
  • Media Session: shows the station or the episode as metadata. Play and pause drive the aside, next and previous are cleared, and seek is offered only for an episode.
  • Sign-out stops a station or an episode as well, as fix(webapp): stop playback on sign-out whatever the replaygain mode #329 and fix(webapp): release the next track's preload on sign-out #330 made it stop the music.
  • Strings in English and French. Also a stop icon, and a fix to the desktop bar's grid: a cover that is not inside a link — a track without an album, and now a station or an episode — was auto-placed into a third row.

Decisions

  • A separate element, never routed through the ReplayGain graph. The graph (RFC-022) claims the queue's element with createMediaElementSource. A cross-origin station without CORS headers routed through it would play as silence, and stations are arbitrary external addresses. Episodes are same-origin and could go through it, but they carry no ReplayGain tags, so there is nothing for the graph to do. They share the station's plain element. Detaching the graph was not an option: an element cannot be released from its source node.
  • The aside's clock is separate (useAsideProgress). The playing screen (lyrics, its scrubber) keeps following the track's position, never an episode's.
  • The queue API keeps its meaning. playing, toggle and seek stay the queue's, instead of meaning "whatever is in the bar". The playing screen shows the paused track, and its play button takes over from the radio.
  • A close button in the aside bar takes the station or episode out and leaves the queue's track there, paused where it was. Without it, the only way back to the music was to start a track from another page.
  • An episode resumes through the element's start position (currentTime set right after src, before metadata). A pause in that window keeps the bookmark the episode resumed from, rather than writing zero.
  • No server change.

Test plan

  • bun --cwd=webapp install
  • bun --cwd=webapp run build
  • bun --cwd=webapp run lint: 10 warnings, the same ones as on main, no new diagnostics
  • bun --cwd=webapp run test: 271 passed (new src/lib/aside.test.ts; the reportsPlaybackFailure cases moved there with the function)
  • Full Playwright suite on a fresh build, desktop and mobile: 344 passed, 20 skipped (project-specific skips), 0 failed
  • Checked by eye in the dark and light themes, desktop and phone widths

New Playwright tests:

  • carries a live station in the bar across pages, off the ReplayGain graph: ReplayGain on, and a track builds the graph. Then a station starts on /radio and the listener navigates in the client. The bar shows the station as Live with no seek, next, previous or shuffle. The station's element plays its own address, is not paused and was never claimed by the graph. The queue's element is paused and still claimed. Stop from the bar pauses the station.
  • pauses the queue under a station, keeps it, and gives it back to a track: the queue page still lists the three tracks with the same one current. Playing Cocoon from it takes the bar and the speakers, and the station's element is paused.
  • keeps a live station readable in the light, and closes back to the queue: axe in the light theme, then the close button brings back the saved queue's track, paused.
  • stops a live station when the listener signs out
  • plays an episode in the bar, across pages, and resumes it from its bookmark: progress and seek in the bar after leaving /podcasts. A seek moves the episode, a pause from the bar writes a new bookmark of at least 12 s, and replaying from the page resumes there. The mock now keeps written bookmarks.
  • keeps an episode playing when another channel is opened replaces stops an episode, keeping its place, when another channel is opened, which asserted the old behaviour.

Inversions

Each behaviour was reverted in the source, rebuilt, and run against its test (desktop project), then restored from git. The sources were then compared byte for byte with backups taken beforehand.

Inversion Failing test Where it failed
The station's element connected into the ReplayGain graph carries a live station… claimed: true where false was expected
The radio and podcasts pages stop the aside on unmount (the old behaviour) carries a live station…, plays an episode…, keeps an episode playing… the bar no longer shows the station or episode after navigation
No bookmark write on pause plays an episode… no write after the pause
A track does not drop the aside (stopAside removed from play() and the queue's play event) pauses the queue… the bar shows "Radio Nova" where "Cocoon" was expected
Starting a station does not pause the queue carries a live station…, pauses the queue… queue element paused: false
Starting a station clears the queue pauses the queue…, closes back to the queue 0 rows where 3 were expected; the bar does not return to "Hidden Place"
Sign-out leaves the station's element playing stops a live station when the listener signs out station paused: false

Two of these inversions first showed weak tests, and both are fixed in this PR:

  • Routing the station through the queue's element failed, but for the wrong reason: that element's play event cleared the aside. The inversion that counts connects the station's own element to the graph, and it fails on the claim.
  • Removing the save on pause first left the new episode test green, because the seek's write satisfied it. The test now waits for the seek's write and requires a new one after the pause. It fails without the save and passes with it.

A defect the first run caught, also fixed: load() drops the element's queued pause event. After stopping a station, the bar kept offering to stop it. silenceSide now sets the state itself.

Summary by CodeRabbit

The radio and podcasts pages each owned a private audio element and paused it on unmount, so a station or an episode stopped as soon as the listener left the page, and the play bar never showed it. The player now plays them aside from the queue, from an element of its own that the ReplayGain graph never claims: the bar shows a station as live with stop and volume, and an episode with its channel, progress and seek. Starting either pauses the queue without clearing it; playing a track takes over again. Episode positions are written through the bookmark route as before, and signing out stops both.

The seek writes the episode's place too, so a pause that wrote nothing still satisfied the assertion. Measured by removing the save on pause: the test passed. It now waits for the seek's write and requires a new one after the pause.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to b561e

Episode playback cannot restart from a delayed ticket after sign-out, and system controls handle a failed station consistently. No outstanding issue identified here prevents merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to b561e

The shared playback design contains audio cleanup and source-switching controls, but pending podcast bookmark operations can outlive sign-out and run under the next account on a shared browser. This creates a timing-dependent risk of changing that account’s listening progress.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new serialized bookmark queue is not bound to its originating account. If account A queues multiple updates behind a slow request, then signs out before account B signs in, a subsequent callback can create a fresh bookmark PUT or DELETE using B’s token. Audio teardown does not cancel those callbacks. Unlike the base implementation’s immediate requests, the deferred operations can acquire authority from a later session, potentially overwriting or deleting B’s bookmark for an accessible episode.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified exposure is limited to queued episode bookmark operations and a subsequent account using the same application document. It requires no administrator privilege, but does require an account transition while earlier work remains unresolved. The traced path concerns bookmark integrity and misplaced listening progress; it does not establish arbitrary cross-account reads or server-wide compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An ordinary listener can enqueue progress updates through seeking, pausing, or periodic playback saves. If one request remains pending across sign-out and another account’s sign-in, a later queued callback reads the new account’s credentials at dispatch and can change that account’s bookmark. The base implementation dispatched bookmark requests immediately rather than waiting behind prior responses, so this deferred authority acquisition is introduced by the PR.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The request client binds an already-started request to a generation for 401 renewal decisions. This prevents stale authentication replay, but a bookmark callback that starts later is treated as new work and takes the then-current session token.
  • observed — Station URLs already reached browser audio directly before this PR. The change extends playback across navigation but does not move station fetching into the server or add application bearer headers to that media assignment. Episode playback still uses the existing ticket exchange.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Sign-out clears session state and leaves the authenticated shell. Provider cleanup removes media listeners, invalidates pending playback attempts, pauses audio, and removes its source. These controls contain playback after teardown, but do not invalidate bookmark operations already queued.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind queued bookmark operations to their originating session generation and invalidate undispatched work on session change or provider teardown. Preserve serialization within that ownership boundary, without allowing obsolete operations to acquire a later account’s credentials.

…gn-out, retry a failed station

Episode bookmark writes are chained, so a slow PUT can no longer land after the DELETE of an episode heard to the end. The player's cleanup moves the attempt counter, so an episode whose ticket is still on its way does not start after sign-out. A failed source leaves paused false; playLive and toggleAside no longer take a failed station for a playing one, so Listen and the bar's Play try it again.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Les commandes Media Session sont inversées pour une station en échec.

setDirectionalMediaSessionHandlers lit seulement element.paused.

  • Pause système : l'action "pause" appelle toggleAside. Comme element.error est défini, toggleAside relance la station : la commande Pause démarre la lecture.

Le correctif consiste à appliquer aux gestionnaires de l'aside la même règle que dans toggleAside.

A failed source keeps paused false, so the Media Session handlers of the aside ignored the system's Play and let its Pause start the station again. They now ask whether the aside is sounding, the rule toggleAside and playLive already used, now shared as sounding(). The queue element's handlers are unchanged.

Re the outside-diff comment in review 5646083107 (player.tsx, Media Session handlers for a failed station): confirmed and fixed in b561e52.

A failed source keeps paused === false. The aside's Media Session handlers read element.paused, so for a failed station the system's Play was ignored, and its Pause called toggleAside, which retried the station. The rule toggleAside and playLive already applied is now one pure function, sounding(element) (!paused && !error, in webapp/src/lib/aside.ts). The aside's handlers now go through it, via a new setAsideMediaSessionHandlers. The queue element keeps setDirectionalMediaSessionHandlers unchanged.

Tests:

  • webapp/src/player/player.test.ts, "Media Session actions for a station or an episode": with a source whose paused is false and whose error is set, Pause must not call the toggle and Play must call it once. A second case checks that a sounding source pauses on Pause and ignores Play.
  • webapp/src/lib/aside.test.ts, "whether the aside sounds".

Inversions:

  • Handlers reading element.paused directly: the failed-source test fails ("expected to not be called at all, but actually been called 1 times").
  • sounding reduced to !paused: both new tests fail.

Restored, then ran the webapp gates on a fresh build: lint shows the same 10 warnings as before, vitest 274 passed, and the full Playwright suite on port 4811 gives 373 passed and 0 failed.
