A legacy plan update rebuilt the ramp schedule from the request, so it
could move a managed plan's dates, services or allocation back under the
interval formula, and a bare PUT rename silently dropped dates_managed
and allocation_mode. UpdatePurchasePlanTx now locks the plan row and
refuses changes to editor-owned fields of a managed plan, or adoption of
the managed marker, with ErrEditorReconciliationRequired. Name, enabled,
disarming and the step commitment stay editable. preserveRampProgress
keeps both markers so a rename no longer strips them.

The guard is dormant until the editor Save path marks a plan managed;
the API maps the sentinel to 409 in a follow-up.

Refs #631

Part 1 of 5 of the #631 legacy-writer guards; Base is main.

Review verdict and evidence

Original review, copied from the per-commit evidence record. Commit 97d585f4 was reviewed before the rebase onto origin/main; the rebased commit is 4a51fe0.

  • Reviewed tree 124e9215887666b05a698c138241f6f9014331ef (local commit ae8935ee; rebased as 97d585f4, range-diff =). +254/-2.
  • Pass 1: no actionable findings (one low: known_issues entry format, fixed). Pass 2: clean.
  • Evidence: CI-pinned golangci-lint v2.10.1 0 issues; go test -race ./internal/config/... ./internal/api/... 3921 pass; integration -p 1 (guard + rename + CompletePlanStep/UpdatePlan/PatchPlan) 52 pass, 0 fail, 0 skip.
  • Mutation probes (8, all failed a named test): invert managed check; sameDate always true; UpdatePurchasePlanTx skips guard; allow marker adoption; drop arming row; services compared by key count; drop marker copy in preserveRampProgress; judge caller's stale copy instead of locked row.
  • Regression proof for the rename bug (known_issues/resolved/34): TestUpdatePlanRenameKeepsManagedMarkers fails with the marker copy removed.
  • Dormant on main: only plans with ramp_schedule.dates_managed=true are refused, and only the (unpublished) editor Save sets it.

Rebase: the five commits were rebased onto origin/main 0ed85aa (27 commits ahead of the old base). git range-diff of the old 5 commits against the rebased 5 shows all five as = (identical patches), so the verdict carries over per the owner's rule. New head SHA of this PR: 4a51fe0. No migration is added by any of the five commits.

Review gate

CodeRabbit is not used on this stack (quota; owner decision): the gate is the independent adversarial review above plus the local verification below.

Local verification

Local verification of the rebased stack tip (macOS, Docker Postgres via testcontainers; Linux via CI):

  • go build ./... and go vet ./...: pass
  • CI-pinned golangci-lint v2.10.1: 0 issues
  • go test -race -count=1 ./internal/config/ ./internal/api/ ./internal/purchase/...: config ok, purchase ok, api has one failure, TestAuthPublicRoutes_EveryRouteIsCSRFGuardedOrExempt (route POST /api/purchases/approve/*/details unclassified). It fails identically on a clean origin/main 0ed85aa and is not touched by this stack.
  • Integration (-tags integration -p 1 -count=1) on the same packages: 5838 pass, 1 fail (the same test), 14 skip (the known pre-existing skips: 11 TestPostgresStoreDB_* in config; TestGetFederationIaC_TfvarsAutoLoadedByTerraform/aws-cross-account, TestRevokePurchase_FourEyesApproval, TestRevoke_4EyesMode_TODO in api).

Status on main

The change is dormant on main until the editor Save route ships: only plans marked managed (ramp_schedule.dates_managed) are affected, and only that route sets the marker.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Renaming a plan now preserves its managed schedule settings and progress.
    • Changes to editor-managed schedule details through legacy update paths are now blocked when they require reconciliation, helping prevent unintended changes to managed plans.
    • Managed plans can still be renamed and updated in other supported ways without losing their schedule settings.

📝 Walkthrough

Legacy plan renames now preserve managed ramp markers when the schedule shape is unchanged. PostgreSQL update paths lock and check plans before applying changes, and return a reconciliation error for specified changes to editor-managed fields. Integration tests cover preservation, rejected changes, and allowed updates.

Changes: Editor-managed plan updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve managed ramp markers
internal/api/handler_plans.go, internal/api/handler_plans_managed_rename_integration_test.go, known_issues/resolved/*
When a legacy update keeps the ramp schedule shape unchanged, it retains DatesManaged and AllocationMode. An integration test checks that a rename preserves the stored schedule state and markers. The resolved-issue note records the behavior and fix.
Guard PostgreSQL plan updates
internal/config/errors.go, internal/config/store_postgres.go, internal/config/store_postgres_managed_guard.go
Adds ErrEditorReconciliationRequired and checks managed-plan changes to ramp schedule, services, execution date, notification settings, and arming state. The update paths lock and read the existing plan before applying the guarded update.
Validate guarded update behavior
internal/config/store_postgres_managed_guard_integration_test.go, internal/config/store_postgres_complete_step_test.go
Integration tests cover rejected changes, allowed updates, stale plan copies, and direct transaction callers. Existing transaction tests expect the additional locked plan read.

Before managed plans are enabled, map rejected legacy edits to HTTP 409 so users receive a conflict response rather than a server error. This is a bounded prerequisite, not a demonstrated failure of the current rename path.

Rebased onto main 0a5f790 (picks up #1003, which fixed the CSRF classification test that failed on the old base); git range-diff vs the previous head is empty, so the review verdict in the description carries. New head SHA: 4a51fe0.

Map ErrEditorReconciliationRequired to HTTP 409 before enabling managed plans.

When a managed plan rejects a legacy update, updatePlan and patchPlan pass the wrapped error to mapCreatePlanStorageError. That mapper sends unrecognized errors to HTTP 500. Add a conflict branch before a code path can set dates_managed.

Suggested mapping
 	if errors.Is(err, config.ErrPurchasePlanConflict) {

Independent review of a8c0812: no actionable findings

Scope note: this review covers the pre-rebase SHA. The merge driver will record the range-diff to the new head (4a51fe0); I ran git range-diff on the PR's own commit and it shows =.

Findings: none blocking. NON-BLOCKING: openapi.yaml is untouched here; the 409 body code lands in the next PR (see #1011/#1012 notes).

What I attacked:

  • Callers of the guarded stores (all non-test): UpdatePurchasePlan via handler_plans.go:328 (PUT), :811 (PATCH), handler_purchases.go:672 (disablePlan); UpdatePurchasePlanTx via handler_plans.go:726 (planned purchases) and store_postgres.go:745 (persistRampPosition, unmanaged only; managed plans go through persistManagedRampPosition, which jsonb_sets current_step and is the editor/scheduler path). No other writer of purchase_plans besides last_notification_sent, ramp_baseline and DELETE, which touch no editor-owned field.
  • Atomicity: the guard judges the row re-locked FOR UPDATE inside the same tx as the UPDATE (store_postgres.go:782-786, LockPurchasePlanTx :690), not the caller's pre-read copy. A writer that waited behind the editor sees the committed marker.
  • False refusals: an unmanaged-to-unmanaged write returns nil at the first condition; name, enabled, disarming and cap stay editable on managed plans (disablePlan test).
  • Mutation probes (3, reverted): guard body returns nil -> TestManagedPlanUpdateGuard, TestUnmanagedPlanUpdateGuard, TestUpdatePurchasePlanTxGuardsDirectCallers fail; drop the DatesManaged copy in preserveRampProgress -> TestUpdatePlanRenameKeepsManagedMarkers fails; allow auto_purchase arming -> TestManagedPlanUpdateGuard fails.
  • Tests on real Postgres (testcontainers, -tags integration, -p 1): config guard + CompletePlanStep/UpdatePlan/PatchPlan and api Update/Patch/Managed/Rename subsets pass.

Gate: CI on this SHA: pre-commit success; CI - Build & Test still running when I checked (Unit and E2E pass, Integration Tests and Docker build pending). Labels match the issue set (priority/p1, severity/high, urgency/this-sprint, impact/many, effort/xl, type/feat, triaged). CodeRabbit: no unresolved threads. TestAuthPublicRoutes_EveryRouteIsCSRFGuardedOrExempt passes on current origin/main 0a5f790 (#1003 merged); it fails on this pre-rebase tree only because of the old base. Additions are 254 lines, under the 400 additions-only cap.

The independent review above covers a8c0812. claude-cc-631-driver rebased the stack onto main 0a5f790 (includes #1003).
Pure rebase: git range-diff 0ed85aa3..a8c08123 0a5f7903..4a51fe02:

1: a8c08123 = 1: 4a51fe02 fix(config): refuse legacy writes to editor-managed plans

The PR's own commits are unchanged, so the verdict carries to 4a51fe0 (owner #631 rule).
