Durable scout-side reasoning control. Replaces the ephemeral SCOUT_REPLAY_REASONING container patch.

What changes

  • CandidateReplayPlan.reasoning: bool | None. None leaves the provider default; True/False is pinned on every candidate request by a new ReasoningControlClient wrapper (src/scout/reasoning_control.py), which sets CompletionParams.reasoning. Jig translates it per adapter (Ollama think, OpenRouter reasoning.enabled) or refuses before any request.
  • Inputs: --reasoning on|off on scout feedback replay and batch-replay (plain batch), or reasoning: true|false on a replay-sweep v1 variant (either axis) or at the sweep top level as the shared default. Contract updated, still v1: the field is optional and every existing document stays valid.
  • Recorded in: the v2 candidate config (reasoning), the batch parent's candidate config (reasoning_override), the canonical plan's variant entries and worker configuration, so plan_sha256 moves with it. Batch retry reads it back from the parent.
  • An explicit switch is never a no-op (the baseline ran on a provider default the plan cannot see). Two sweep variants that differ only in their effective switch are distinct; same model and same effective switch is still rejected.
  • Grid: each model's reasoning is written into its generated sweep variant. The "one reasoning value per backend" rule is gone, since it is no longer an environment property.
  • Web: strict zod schemas and TS types accept the optional field on candidate configs and the worker configuration.
  • PAA reference evidence and golden fixture re-rendered.

Not in this PR

  • B1 per-case repeats. Needs a storage column and web aggregation changes; next PR off main after this merges. Both change the plan hash, so one deploy and one re-snapshot cover both.
  • The evidence study grid still carries the SCOUT_REPLAY_REASONING env line as a record of how those runs were made. A rerun should use reasoning: false on the frink models instead.

Deploy note

Deploying this changes the plan hash for every configuration, so both relevance snapshots need re-snapshotting afterwards. The next willie deploy also drops the container's jig backport and env patch; with the pin bump in #19 and this PR neither is needed.

Verified locally: full Python suite (2467 passed), ruff, mypy, web tests (820), tsc.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added optional reasoning controls for single replays, batch replays, and sweep variants.
    • Users can enable or disable reasoning with --reasoning on|off; omission preserves provider defaults.
    • Sweep configurations support shared reasoning settings and per-variant overrides.
    • Replay previews and generated variants display and retain effective reasoning settings.
    • Explicit reasoning choices persist across requests, retries, planning, and replay metadata.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Providers unable to honor an explicit reasoning setting now fail before requests are sent.
    • Different reasoning modes can now coexist within the same backend sweep.

…request

The only way to run a local model with thinking off was an ephemeral
patch in the willie container that read SCOUT_REPLAY_REASONING; nothing
recorded it, and a thinking-on and a thinking-off run of the same
configuration hashed to the same plan.

A candidate plan now carries `reasoning: bool | None` (None leaves the
provider default). It flows from `--reasoning on|off` on replay and
batch-replay, or from a sweep variant's / sweep-level `reasoning` field
(replay-sweep v1 gains the optional boolean on both axes), into
BatchVariant.reasoning_override, the v2 candidate config, the batch
parent's candidate config (`reasoning_override`), the canonical plan's
variant entries and worker configuration (so it moves plan_sha256), and
retry reads it back from the parent. At execution the candidate LLM is
wrapped in ReasoningControlClient, which pins CompletionParams.reasoning
on every request; jig's adapters translate it (Ollama `think`,
OpenRouter `reasoning.enabled`) or refuse before any request. An
explicit switch is never a no-op, since the baseline ran on a provider
default the plan cannot observe. Two sweep variants that differ only in
their effective switch are distinct.

The grid writes each model's `reasoning` into its generated sweep variant
instead of requiring one value per backend, so one Ollama backend can
serve think and nothink variants in the same sweep.

Web: the strict candidate config and worker configuration schemas accept
the optional field. PAA reference evidence and golden fixture re-rendered
(the worker configuration is part of the plan hash).
