Add wally shannon, deepsec and vvah: three hosted security harnesses - #219
The single 0.8.14 release of the hosted security-audit harnesses. Folds in #223 (deepsec + vvah) on top of shannon.
Three harnesses, one pattern: each resolves the model from the signed-in account (or WALLY_CLOUD_KEY), writes the tool's own config pointed at <console>/v1, sets the key in the child's environment only, and otherwise passes the tool's own arguments through.
Command
Tool
Wiring
wally shannon
Keygraph Shannon 3.4.0 (npx/Docker)
Pi models.json, SHANNON_AI_MODEL=runanywhere:<id>, SHANNON_AI_API_KEY
wally deepsec
DeepSec 2.3.10 (npx)
Pi models.json, --ai-provider runanywhere --ai-base-url <base> --ai-api-key-env WALLY_DEEPSEC_API_KEY
End-to-end test (dev, signed in as a granted account)
Unit: 614 lib tests pass, 53 of them harness-specific (shannon/deepsec/vvah).
deepsec handoff: resolves deepseek-v4.1-flash-1017-uncensored through .../api-dev/v1, writes the Pi models.json (openai-completions), passes the custom-route flags and WALLY_DEEPSEC_API_KEY.
vvah handoff: writes config.local.yaml mapping every role to the model {via: openai}, sets OPENAI_BASE_URL=.../api-dev/v1 and OPENAI_API_KEY.
shannon: a real Shannon scan launched through Wally reached Recon, calling the model.
Model call: the endpoint all three point at serves the model with the account's bearer (200, real completion).
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This release adds Wally launchers for Shannon, DeepSec, and VVAH. The launchers handle command routing, hosted credentials, model selection, and tool-specific setup. The change also updates CLI help, golden tests, usage documentation, and release metadata to version 0.8.14.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 5efe2
Two open issues should be fixed before merge. VVAH may stage its config in a shared, predictable temp directory without ownership checks when the scan target contains the profile directory, which on multi-user machines could expose the account token to an attacker-controlled config. DeepSec accepts user-supplied model and provider flags that can override the injected hosted route, which could break routed runs.

wally shannon runs the pinned Shannon release (installed, or via npx)
against the models on a RunAnywhere account. For start it writes a Pi
models.json (owner-only), sets SHANNON_AI_MODEL and SHANNON_AI_API_KEY for
the child only, and removes variables that would override the key. Other
Shannon commands pass through untouched. Native Windows is refused with a
pointer to WSL2.
A hosted model missing from the account list now says to request access in
the console instead of implying a login problem.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Releases the skill note and the new command. Also keeps WALLY_CLOUD_KEY out
of Shannon's environment, retries a busy script once, and takes the shared
environment lock before a test resolves the temp directory.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Shannon fills a missing SHANNON_AI_BASE_URL from its saved settings, so
removing the variable could still send the key to another host. Set it to
the Wally endpoint instead. SHANNON_USE_PI_AUTH=1 makes Shannon use a
local Pi login and ignore the key it is given, so force it to 0 for start.
The child-environment test now sets both strays and checks the child sees
the Wally endpoint and Pi login reuse off.

Add wally shannon: run Shannon against Wally models
Add wally shannon, deepsec and vvah: three hosted security harnesses
Oct 26, 2026
CodeRabbit asked for five doc fixes; this applies them and brings the
deepsec and vvah docs level with shannon's.
- EDITORS.md Shannon environment: wally sets SHANNON_AI_BASE_URL to its
own endpoint (it does not drop it); it removes OPENAI_API_KEY,
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, XAI_API_KEY and WALLY_CLOUD_KEY from the child only.
- EDITORS.md manual Shannon example: quoted shell-safe Cloud key
placeholder instead of an angle-bracket one.
- EDITORS.md model fields: map max_input_tokens to contextWindow,
max_output_tokens to maxTokens and input_modalities to input.
- README.md: Node 18+ is needed only when Shannon 3.4.0 is not on PATH.
- SKILL.md: quoted $APP_URL / $REPO_PATH in the shannon command, same
conditional Node requirement.
- DeepSec 2.3.10 and VVAH 1.5.1 pinned versions, the PATH-or-npx / pip
venv install route, account-or-WALLY_CLOUD_KEY model source and the
child-only environment override are now stated in EDITORS.md, README.md
and SKILL.md.
Skipped: removing authHeader from the manual Shannon models.json example.
Wally's own generated models.json (src/harness/shannon.rs) writes it, and
the Pi 3.4.0 client behaviour was not verified here, so the example keeps
matching what wally ships.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
scripts/ci/check-retired-model-ids.py scans src/ and is wired into
ci.yml; it flagged `zai/glm-5.2` in deepsec.rs:650. The test only proves
`pi_model_id` leaves an already-slashed `provider/model` pair unchanged, so
the id is incidental -- it now uses `acme/custom-model`, a non-retired pair.
Checker after: "no retired model ids in 140 user-facing files". The test
still passes (pi_model_id_prefixes_runanywhere_when_bare ... ok) and the
crate builds.

account::load() already supplies default_console_url() when the credentials file is missing, so the empty-URL path does not occur in that case. However, hosted_access loads credentials before checking WALLY_CLOUD_KEY. When no profile directory is available, the cloud key cannot be used.
Read the environment key first. If it is set, use account::default_console_url() when credential loading fails.

Major · Security & Privacy · Quick win
Do not stage the VVAH config in a shared, predictable temp directory.
The fallback directory is std::env::temp_dir().join("wally-vvah"). On Unix this is /tmp/wally-vvah, which any local user can create first. Neither stage_vvah_config nor write_private_file checks who owns an existing directory or what its mode is. write_private_file sets mode 0700 only when it creates the parent itself. std::fs::copy writes config.yaml into that directory and follows a symlink placed there.
The fallback runs when the scan target contains the profile directory. One example is wally vvah -- scan --repo ~. In that case, the directory owner can replace config.yaml or config.local.yaml before VVAH reads them. VVAH then runs with an attacker-controlled config while it holds OPENAI_API_KEY, which is the account token. Use a per-user directory that only the current user can access and that has a unique name. For example, create a directory with mode 0700 and a random suffix. Alternatively, use $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. If you keep a fixed path, check that the directory is owned by the current user and has mode 0700, and refuse it otherwise.

@sanchitmonga22 Understood: flagged, not fixed. The security concern remains unresolved pending the author’s decision. Documenting it does not mitigate the shared-temp-directory risk.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for follow-up?
The distribution job's `cargo fmt --check` failed on deepsec.rs:777: a
multi-line `select_runner(...)` call in a test was not rustfmt-formatted.
Mechanical `cargo fmt`; only that block changed, and `cargo fmt --check`
is clean after.

Not changed in this PR: this is a product/security decision, so it is flagged to the author (item 8 in #219 (comment)) with a recommendation, and documented in comments/PR_219_comments.md. Status: flagged, not fixed.
Docs: add SHANNON_AI_BASE_URL to the shannon env row, note VVAH strips the
ANTHROPIC_*/WALLY_CLOUD_KEY variables, drop -m from the VVAH report example,
qualify the 0600 claim on Windows and document the temp-dir config fallback,
cover the python>3.14 message, fix the nested-backtick install prompt, name
the exact DeepSec 2.3.10 PATH rule, soften the "needs approval" wording,
describe routing as tool-specific, harden the manual Shannon recipe, fix the
mod.rs module doc.
Golden: update the invocation and added-line counts in the README, add the
Security tools section (and shannon/deepsec/vvah passthrough) to the capture
script, and reword the bare `wally vvah` footer example to say it remediates.
Code: refuse every flag wally deepsec injects, not just three; honour
USERPROFILE when HOME is unset for the home-directory guard; quote the model
id as a YAML scalar in the VVAH config; quote paths in the printed VVAH
install command; find the nearest existing ancestor when checking config
containment; choose the model from the account's own list so an unavailable
-m is refused (it was silently inserted); skip the price request after a
failed model list; say "using <model>" rather than "default model" when the
default was unavailable; make the shannon env test restore prior values.
Design and security items are documented in comments/PR_219_comments.md and
flagged to the author; no behavior changes were made for them.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Single source of truth for all 66 comments: what was fixed in b7c5c5d, and the
design and security decisions flagged to the author with recommendations.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
@sanchitmonga22 review-comment triage for this PR. 32 comments were fixed in b7c5c5d (replied on each thread) and the ten items below change product or security behavior, so I left the behavior alone and am flagging them for you. No issues were opened. Full detail, with the original comments: comments/PR_219_comments.md on this branch (commit ad52e9d).
Decisions for you (recommendation in each)
Home-directory guard only fires with no args (vvah.rs, deepsec.rs). wally deepsec init or wally vvah scan --remediate from $HOME still target home, and for VVAH that can edit files there. Recommend: refuse when the routed command would run in a cwd that is home and no explicit --repo was given, not on args.is_empty(). (The USERPROFILE fallback is already fixed.)
VVAH enables remediation on every routed scan (step_remediate: enabled: true is always written). wally vvah -- scan --repo X can edit files without --remediate. Recommend: write it from the arguments (true only with --remediate or the remediate command); keep or change bare wally vvah as you prefer.
DeepSec runs <cwd>/.deepsec/node_modules/.bin/deepsec from the scanned repo before any trust check; it gets the full environment for the version probe and WALLY_DEEPSEC_API_KEY for the real run. A repo under audit can ship that file. Recommend: drop the workspace candidate (PATH or pinned npx only).
VVAH uses any vvaharness on PATH with no version check, yet it receives the bearer as OPENAI_API_KEY. Recommend: probe for exactly 1.5.1, else offer the venv install.
VVAH install pins the mutable tag @v1.5.1 (and PINNED_VERSION can drift from SOURCE). Recommend: pin to the full commit SHA of that tag and derive both from one constant. I did not do it because the SHA has to come from upstream.
VVAH config staged in /tmp/wally-vvah follows a pre-planted symlink (the fs::copy of default.yaml). Only when the profile dir is inside the scan target. Recommend: a fresh 0700 per-run temp dir, or verify owner/mode/not-a-symlink and write without following.
WALLY_CLOUD_KEY is blocked when account::load() fails (hosted.rs and shannon.rs). Recommend: read the key first and fall back to the validated default console URL on a load failure. Left because load() also fails deliberately for an insecure profile dir or a bad WALLY_CONSOLE_URL, so which failures may be ignored is your call.
Shannon duplicates the shared hosted helpers (hosted_access, choose_model, not_available_message). Recommend reusing hosted.rs; sequence it with item 7.
Shannon sits under "Coding tools" while deepsec and vvah are under "Security tools". Recommend moving it and re-capturing the ~49 golden files that print the command list; cosmetic, your call.
Slash-containing model ids produce a Pi --model that models.json does not register. -m ids with / are already rejected, so this is probably unreachable; confirm whether account ids can contain /.
Also in the fix commit and worth a glance since it is a small behavior change: deepsec and vvah now pick the model from the account's own list, so an unavailable -m is refused (it was being silently inserted into the list). Test results: fmt, clippy -D warnings, 618 lib tests (serial), the golden replay (379 cases) and the three CI scripts all pass.

DeepSec 2.3.10 `init` takes `[workspace] [target-root]` as positionals and has
no `--repo` option; `deepsec init --repo ./my-repo` fails with "unknown option
'--repo'". The README, docs/EDITORS.md, the runanywhere skill, the `wally
deepsec` help footer and both golden help files all showed that form. They now
show `wally deepsec -- init . ./my-repo` (workspace `.`, target-root the repo).
The status and process examples were checked against the real `--help` and are
valid. The unit tests that pass `--repo` through are unchanged: they treat it as
an opaque argument.
